  • Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers” Brings Wild Beaver Comedy — Now Showing in Cinemas

Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers” Brings Wild Beaver Comedy — Now Showing in Cinemas

What happens when a passionate teenager takes on a powerful mayor—and ends up living inside a robotic beaver? In Disney and Pixar’s new animated comedy adventure “Hoppers,” the answer is a wildly unpredictable ride packed with laugh-out-loud moments, heartfelt themes, and chaotic animal antics.

A scene from Disney and Pixar s HOPPERS

Now playing in cinemas nationwide, Hoppers introduces audiences to an imaginative world where humans and animals collide in the most hilarious way possible.

A Teen’s Unusual Plan to Save the Forest

At the center of the story is Mabel, a determined animal lover voiced by Piper Curda. When she discovers that the natural habitat of countless animals is under threat, Mabel refuses to stay silent.

    Mabel in Pixar s HOPPERS

Armed with experimental technology, she makes an unusual decision—transferring her consciousness into a life-like robotic beaver. The plan allows her to communicate directly with animals and understand their world from the inside.

What begins as a bold experiment soon turns into a thrilling mission.

As tensions grow between humans and animals, Mabel must navigate both sides of the conflict while trying to prevent disaster for everyone involved.

    Comedy That Drives the Adventure

For director Daniel Chong, best known for the hit animated series We Bare Bears, comedy served as the creative heartbeat of the film.

“The thing that always guided us was the comedy and the characters,” says director Daniel Chong (“We Bare Bears”). “That was what we chased the hardest. We knew it was our team’s strong suit, and we made sure early on to establish a unique comedic tone with fun characters to build everything on.”

That approach gives Hoppers its energetic personality, blending quick-witted humor with absurd situations and memorable characters.

A Story Packed with Action and Emotion

While laughter takes center stage, the film also balances its humor with heartfelt storytelling and exciting action sequences.

Producer Nicole Paradis Grindle (Incredibles 2) explains that the film evolves beyond comedy as the story unfolds.

King George from Disney and Pixar s HOPPERS

“A story like this, with characters arguing constantly, has to be funny,” adds producer Nicole Paradis Grindle (“Incredibles 2”). “We wanted it to have emotion and feature a ton of action, too. It’s even a thriller when you get to the final scenes. But the humor was the initial key, since it brings people in. It’s an amazing story to tell in animation, this idea that we can see into that animal world and enjoy animals, as animals.”

Through Mabel’s unexpected journey as a robotic beaver, audiences experience the animal kingdom in a fresh and imaginative way—filled with quirky personalities, surprising alliances, and escalating stakes.

  • Film Facts: 5 Things to Know About Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’

    “To infinity and beyond!”

For years we’ve seen Buzz Lightyear as half of Toy Story‘s leading duo, alongside the cowboy Woody. But Disney and Pixar are set to change our view of the iconic character in the upcoming Toy Story spinoff film, Lightyear.

The new film is set to explore the story that inspired the toy. It will follow the legendary Space Ranger, as he travels through space and time to find a way back home after getting stuck on a hostile planet. But it’s not that easy, especially with the evil emperor Zurg trying to thwart the mission.

    Watch the trailer below:

Before you see this exciting spinoff film on the big screen, we’ve rounded up some fun facts about Lightyear that you might find interesting!

    1. Chris Evans is the new voice of Buzz

In the Toy Story franchise, Buzz has been consistently voiced by Tim Allen, but for this film, Chris Evans is lending his voice to the character. In an interview with IGN, producer Galyn Susman answers why they decided to cast a different actor for the “meta” film: “There was so much initial confusion about our pitch, that it became really clear that we needed to have some clear delineators. We needed a different voice. And our Buzz had to have hair. We needed some things that made it clear that this is not the Toy Story Buzz.”

    2. Zurg’s previous appearances

In case you forgot, Zurg has also been a recurring character in the Toy Story franchise, being Buzz’s archenemy even as a toy. In Toy Story 2, Zurg is also oblivious about himself being a toy and tries to stop Buzz in his mission to save Woody from the toy dealer Al McWhiggin. At the end of Toy Story 3, Zurg is also seen being added to the toys at Sunnyside Daycare. But in Lightyear, we can expect a more menacing Zurg as the trailer teased.

Another fun fact about this new Zurg: he will be voiced by James Brolin, the father of Josh Brolin. So in a way, we’ll see Captain America fight Thanos’ dad.

    3. A cute robot cat joins Buzz in his mission

Joining Buzz on his mission is a robot cat named SOX. The adorable character can talk and accompanies the Space Ranger throughout his journey across time and space. If the voice sounds familiar, he is voiced by Peter Sohn, a Korean-American animator and director who has voiced the likes of Emile in Ratatouille, Forrest Woodbush in The Good Dinosaur (which he also directed), and Ciccio in Luca. Sohn is also directing the upcoming Disney film Elemental.

    4. The sets and ships took inspiration from NASA

In an interview with Variety, set art director Greg Peltz shared how NASA’s real ships and structures inspired the ships and sets in Lightyear. “We looked at the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA, that huge structure where they build the giant space rockets,” Peltz says. “Take the car crawler, it’s a rail vehicle and it has these giant clamps that grasp it and lock it into place. When you’re ready to launch, the steam comes off it, and you see these moving parts.”

    5. NASA took Buzz Lightyear to space once

We know that Buzz Lightyear’s name was inspired by Apollo 11’s Buzz Aldrin. But did you know that Buzz the toy also had his time in space in real life? Back in 2008, a Buzz Lightyear toy was taken by NASA to the International Space Station with the crew of the STS-124 space shuttle mission. The toy returned to Earth 15 months later.

Lightyear opens in cinemas nationwide this Wednesday, June 15, 2022.  Book your seats in advance and buy your tickets here.

  • ‘Turning Red’ Revels in the Ordinary of the Extraordinary

Set in Toronto in 2002, ‘Turning Red’ is an unapologetic, no-holds-barred exploration into the world of a Chinese Canadian 13-year-old named Mei Lee. The narrative leans into the familiar characteristics of her demographic: Mei has a tiger mom, who only wants the best for her, and so Mei is an overachiever with the best grades and full of extra-curricular activities. But she’s also 13, so she and her friends – Miriam, Priya, and Abby – are also infatuated with the boyband 4*Town. At the onset, it looks like every other coming-of-age story of four teens who may be outsiders of the school hierarchy (but not as severe as this is Canada and not America) and have to navigate this awkward part of life. But the story interweaves Asian mysticism and spirituality into the mix for incredible results.

Because Mei’s family, through her mother’s line, has a mystical gift (or curse) that transforms the women of the family into giant red pandas when feeling strong emotions. This becomes the source of all the character growth and comedy for the story.

The story, written and directed by Domee Shi and co-written Julia Cho and Sarah Streicher, is not even coy about how this supernatural transformation is a metaphor for puberty that is centered on the female experience. The mood swings, the rebelliousness, and even the color red are indicators of this apparent symbolism.

And so as Mei has to deal with this transformation happening in her body, she’s beginning to explore the facets of her personality that she didn’t know were there.

In the process, the film explores the Chinese cultural bonds of family that can be very familiar to a lot of the Asian audiences — the expectations and high demands, the controlling, the conservatism – and the vast generational gap of first and second (and even third) generation immigrants to Western countries.

    Turning Red Review

So while ‘Turning Red’ is a supernatural story with Mei Lee transforming into a giant red panda at the funniest moments (and also sometimes at very serious events), the film is grounded by very serious issues about family ties and the generational trauma caused by the gap in morals and values between generations.

And as heavy as these topics might be, ‘Turning Red’ manages to do so in hilarious ways. The four friends’ love of the boyband 4*Town is exactly alike to Generation X’s love for the Backstreet Boys and N*Sync or the new generation’s love for Kpop idols and boy groups. The language and verbal quips of the four friends are masterfully written with some hilarious lines while the tonal shifts of the older members of Mei’s family are clearly different. It’s quite amazing.

And the way with which it captures the frenetic energy of the teenage years and the things they obsess over and think about (that seems so trivial to us now that we are older) is so on point. Director Domee Shi is also quite gifted in being able to shift focus, playing around with the images for wonderful visual comedy, highlighting the film’s verbal wit, and giving moments to really define each character and make them unique.

Each friend is marked by an individual personality, but you can see why this group are friends.

    Turning Red Review

So as much fun as it is to watch Mei navigate the rigors of high school as she has to stop herself from getting triggered from transforming into a giant red panda, what we have in this film is a deep exploration of a vivid world of teenage girls at the brink of change.  And the ironic thing is that as precise as this film feels in presenting a world set in 2002, a lot of the issues are still prevalent today.

‘Turning Red’ is funny and charming and relatable and surprising at every turn. It makes really good use of excellent storytelling and lavish visuals to tell a really moving story about generational gaps and coming to terms with your identity.

    Pixar does it again.
