Movie Review: The Relentless ‘One Battle After Another’ Utilizes Great Filmmaking to Distract From Its Political Commentary

Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’ is a satirical action thriller that never takes a moment to breathe. It reminds me of his earlier work, one of my favourite films, ‘Magnolia,’ where throughout the film’s 188-minute runtime we witness a multi-character drama that never ends and never lets up. For 188-minutes, ‘Magnolia’ gives us scene-after-scene of high drama, characters at their lowest point, one after the other that leaves you breathless. ‘One Battle After Another’ feels exactly like this but instead of drama, it is danger, it is action, it is comic, and it is relentless.

The story revolves around Pat Calhoun (Leonardo DiCaprio), an explosives expert who is part of a revolutionary group called French 75. Alongside his partner Parfidia Beverly Hills (Teyanna Taylor), they commit robberies, armed breakouts of illegal detained immigrants, shut down power grids, and the like all in the name of toppling the capitalist overlords of America. Pat and Parfidia fall in love and become a couple but Parfidia is also the obsession of Steven Lockjaw (Sean Penn), a high-ranking soldier whom she humiliates during one of their revolutionary attacks. When one of their missions go astray, Parfidia is taken into custody and Pat changes his name to Bob and he takes their daughter, now called Willa (Chase Infiniti) and escapes into a sanctuary town. But Lockjaw is not done, he goes after Willa and Pat/Bob must rescue his daughter as the world continues the fight he has left behind when he went into hiding.

‘One Battle After Another’ is a dark, cynical look at today’s world, written by Anderson, who was inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel ‘Vineland’. The world he creates in this movie satirizes both revolutionary movements as well as the conservative people in power as the film tangentially tackles racism, immigration, and different forms of oppression. I say tangentially, because the film takes the point-of-view of Pat/Bob, who we get the impression is a middling revolutionary at best. When he moves to the sanctuary town, he becomes addicted to weed and is a drunk and has left that whole world behind. When his daughter gets taken, he must return to the movement, but the movement has continued on without him. As Lockjaw practically invades the sanctuary town and its primarily Latin American population, the people of the town are ready to fight back but all of this goes over Pat/Bob’s head. He only has one thing in mind: getting Willa back.

What’s incredible about Anderson’s direction and writing is how he put together a feisty film criticizing American politics while distracting us from it with humor, fast-paced suspense and action, and an incredible filmmaking style that has us at the edge of our seat throughout the entire film. Shot magnificently in IMAX by cinematographer Michael Bauman. He shifts from a handheld to wonderfully cinematic long shots that truly capture the scope of Anderson’s vision. The film is also scored by the incredible Jonny Greenwood, who uses a jazz score to constantly keep us from ever feeling settled. The syncopated, discordant notes are always keeping us on our toes, never allowing us to breathe.

Everyone in the film is incredible. Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn remind us why they are Oscar winners by completely inhabiting their characters and are playing it to the hilt and allowing for both the seriousness and the silliness of their characters to its full measure. Teyana Taylor is a force of nature as Perfidia. She’s commanding. Her permanent scowl evokes a fierceness that she brings with her to every scene.

Chase Infiniti never gets swallowed by the sheer talent that surrounds her, standing on her own two feet, and shows off a powerful screen presence. Benicio Del Toro is such a wonderful presence as Pat/Bob’s only friend and the de facto leader of the Latin American community in the sanctuary town.

The film is equal parts funny and thrilling, there’s very little to not enjoy in this movie. But what I love most about it is the way Anderson centers the film on two white people in a predominantly Hispanic and black and female, where one (Lockjaw) is the epitome of the conservative American white supremacist and the other (Pat/Bob), who is completely disconnected from the greater battle that surrounds the film as he only cares for his own personal mission to save his daughter. The way the film represents the current racial crisis in America is so obvious to me despite it not being in the front and center of the narrative. There’s no preaching or moralizing here. The film takes a whole hour to set up the backstory of Pat, Perfidia, and Lockjaw and then the next hour to have Willa taken and Pat-now-Bob chase after her. It’s clever and well-hidden in a flurry of great filmmaking. There’s no question this will to be a front-runner come awards season and it’s definitely one of my favourite cinematic experiences this year.

    A Story Forged in Collaboration

For writer, director, and producer Paul Thomas Anderson, the heartbeat of any film lies in the people behind it. His latest work, One Battle After Another, currently boasting a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is a testament to this philosophy.

“The collaboration is the best part of making a movie,” says Paul Thomas Anderson, writer/director/producer of “One Battle After Another,” The camaraderie that you feel with the people that you’re collaborating with, the trust that you put in them, the way you admire and hold each other up when you’re tired or need support. It’s a team sport for sure, and I’m surrounded by people who I just love, that is a family. It’s the foundation of everything.”

    A Radical Past and a High-Stakes Present

One Battle After Another follows a once-feared revolutionary, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who now lives in a haze of paranoia and marijuana smoke with his fiercely independent daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti). Off-grid and emotionally unmoored, his world shatters when his long-lost nemesis (Sean Penn) resurfaces, and Willa disappears. What follows is a tense, emotional search that forces father and daughter to confront the wreckage of the past.

Meet the Cast: A Collection of Cinematic Powerhouses

The film’s ensemble includes a blend of A-list legends and fresh talent—Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and newcomer Chase Infiniti—all of whom are being praised for their performances.

Leonardo DiCaprio Brings Raw Humor and Humanity

According to producer Sara Murphy, DiCaprio embraced a character unlike any he’s played before.

“I think the comedy in Leo’s character comes from him having to sort of step outside of himself,” says Murphy. “He is a little bit settled in his ways and a little bit slower than his feet need him to be, in a way that he’s going to have to shake off in order to actually proceed. Also, his interactions along the way take him on an odyssey of sorts, in terms of how people are going to help him and influence him, so Leo had an opportunity for incredible physical comedy in this.”

Sean Penn Delivers a “Bonkers” Performance

As Lockjaw, the villainous force that haunts the film, Sean Penn is both unhinged and heartbreakingly human.

“I think this character, Lockjaw, is particularly bonkers, and Sean does not hold back,” Murphy shares. “I think it’s one of the greatest characters I’ve ever seen him play, and I’m the biggest Sean Penn fan of all time. He just really goes for it, but also delivers deep humanity at the same time as being an incredible villain.”

Benicio Del Toro: The Calm Within the Storm

Benicio Del Toro plays Bob, Willa’s enigmatic Sensei. He and Anderson collaborated on the character’s development during filming.

“Benicio is always the coolest guy in the room,” Murphy notes. “He brings that magnetic calmness to Bob. There’s history between him and Paul, and it shows in the depth of his role.”

Teyana Taylor and Regina Hall Steal Scenes with Strength and Subtlety

Regina Hall plays Deandra, a stabilizing force throughout the story.

“Regina Hall’s character, Deandra, is sort of the rock for everyone throughout the film,” says Murphy. “She is loyal, she’s steady, she’s dependable. She’s right all of the time. And Regina Hall is an incredible actor. We’ve mostly seen her do comedic roles, but I think she brings stability to the movie as Deandra. I love seeing her in a more dramatic role because she can really carry it, and she carries a lot in this particular movie.”

Regina Hall herself praises the world Anderson has created.

“I always love the worlds that Paul creates, I love the characters, I love how stories converge,” says Hall, whose portrayal of Deandra in the film has become an early Oscar favorite. “And I love his storytelling through the way he uses the camera. His filmmaking is equally a part of the storytelling. So I was just really excited to be a part of anything that he worked on, and with such an incredible cast.”

As for Teyana Taylor’s role as Perfidia Beverly Hills, Hall describes her as a vibrant contrast to Deandra.

“Perfidia Beverly Hills is played by Teyana Taylor very deliciously,” says Hall. “[My character] Deandra and Perfidia are close, and Perfidia lives in the moment. She’s complex and impassioned and is the strength and the rebellion of the French 75.”

A New Star Emerges: Chase Infiniti as Willa

While the cast is packed with heavyweights, newcomer Chase Infiniti is quickly becoming the breakout name to watch.

“I’m so excited for everyone to get to see Chase Infiniti’s performance, she’s every bit delightful,” Hall shares about newcomer Infiniti. “She really showed up from day one, and it wasn’t easy. She has some rough scenes, some rough days, some rough shooting. But she was always just going with the flow and amazing. I can’t imagine my first film – my first movie ever – being with Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and I just show up. That’s impressive.”

A Knockout Hit Before It Even Opens

With a title like One Battle After Another, you’d expect chaos—and that’s exactly what award-winning director Paul Thomas Anderson delivers, in the best possible way. The film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and breakout talent Chase Infiniti, has critics buzzing ahead of its theatrical release.

Already holding a 97% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Anderson’s latest is being hailed as an instant classic, a genre-defying marvel, and one of the boldest cinematic rides of 2025.

Critics Are Calling It “Mindbending Brilliance”

In their ecstatic review, Empire called the movie “a blast from start to finish (and there are many blasts within),” while boldly declaring it a “stone-cold, instant classic.”

RogerEbert.com praised Anderson’s screenplay as “phenomenal” and “timeless,” adding:

“Anderson’s phenomenal screenplay is a timeless story of resistance, one that playfully weaves together influences as broad-reaching as the true story of Weather Underground and cinematic depictions of rebellion, but it’s also a remarkably propulsive, fun, and eventually moving piece of work about the human beings caught up in the chaotic machine. It’s a live wire that drops in the first scene, setting off sparks for the next 162 minutes.”

    A Father. A Daughter. A Vanishing. A Reckoning.

    So, what’s it all about?

DiCaprio plays Bob, a burned-out revolutionary living off the grid in a haze of paranoia, raising his fiercely capable daughter Willa (Infiniti). But when his old nemesis (Sean Penn) resurfaces after 16 years—and Willa disappears—Bob is thrust back into a world he tried to escape.

As he races to find her, the film unpacks the weight of the past, the unpredictability of the present, and the deep bond between a broken father and his fearless child.

20 Years in the Making — And Worth Every Second

This film wasn’t rushed. Producer Sara Murphy revealed that Anderson began developing One Battle After Another two decades ago. The screenplay evolved, the themes sharpened, and the vision deepened. Now, that patience has paid off.

    According to Deadline,

“The trailer really didn’t give us much of an idea of what the impact of this movie really is,” wrote Deadline Hollywood. “But it seems to me that, 20 years gestation or not, this is an extraordinary crackerjack hell of a film that has met its time. Some of it is so absurdly funny it looks like real life and art have somehow merged into the most pertinent of ways for 2025. Mindbending brilliance doesn’t begin to describe it.”

    A Genre-Bending Triumph

Collider called the film a “generation-defining masterpiece,” applauding its tonal tightrope walk between action, satire, and personal drama.

“generation-defining masterpiece.” “In just under three hours, Anderson creates a captivating action film, an incredibly timely look at how people in power can utilize their position for manipulation and personal gain, an extremely funny comedy, and maybe his most personal exploration of a father and daughter relationship – all in one of the most beautifully shot and well-acted films of the year.”

Variety echoed the sentiment, spotlighting its powerful ensemble, including Benicio del Toro in a mysterious turn as “Sensei.” The publication also praised the movie’s unpredictable nature:

“‘One Battle After Another’ has the kind of twists and turns that feed the audience, giving us the childlike sensation that we have no idea what’s coming next, and that that’s the happiest way there is to watch a movie.”

A Battle Twenty Years in the Making

It’s been two decades in the making — and it shows. Legendary filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson returns with One Battle After Another, a genre-blending action-thriller that’s equal parts emotionally raw and unapologetically absurd. The film storms into Philippine theaters and IMAX® screens this September 24.

    Twisted, Timely, and Totally Unpredictable

Originally conceived 20 years ago, the script for One Battle After Another has morphed across different versions — but its core remains rock-solid.

Written, directed, and produced by Anderson, the story follows Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio), a once-infamous revolutionary now living in paranoid isolation with his fiercely independent daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). Their off-grid world is shattered when Bob’s old enemy (Sean Penn) reemerges after 16 years… and Willa vanishes without a trace.

What follows is a chaotic, heartfelt journey as Bob sets out to rescue his daughter, all while confronting the consequences of his own radical past.

A Cast That Packs a Punch

DiCaprio is joined by an eclectic, powerhouse ensemble that includes:

Together, they inhabit a world that’s grimy, surreal, and bursting with energy — exactly the kind of chaotic sandbox Anderson knows how to shape.

The Serious Business of Being Funny

While it’s not technically a comedy, One Battle After Another isn’t afraid to lean into its stranger side. Humor in the film, as Anderson puts it, comes not from punchlines — but from truth.

“The things I think are funny are the things I think are funny, it’s kind of that simple. When you’re on set and you are collaborating with actors, if they are trying to be funny, it’s not going to be funny. Generally, humor can come out of sincerity, or a dedication to something.”

And he’s not alone in seeing the humor shine through. Legendary director Steven Spielberg, who recently hosted a Q&A with Anderson at the Directors Guild of America, had this to say:

“had a great time laughing all the way”

Building a World, Breaking the Rules

Murphy highlights Anderson’s bold approach to world-building — crafting an exaggerated yet oddly believable version of reality. Factions, foes, friends, and freaks appear throughout Bob and Willa’s journey, each adding new tension and flavor to the mix.

“Paul’s done some incredible world-building, introducing heightened versions of various factions that introduce a myriad of villains and foes and friends along the way. Through all that, it’s a really fun, action-packed thriller from start to finish, with a lot of laughs. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the end of the day is a truly emotional journey of this father and daughter.”
