Movie Review: A Straightforward Horror Film, “Other Mommy” Shines Through the Performances of Jessica Chastain and Arabella Olivia Clark

From the very first ten minutes of Other Mommy, we are immediately thrust into the terror. It’s a straightforward horror film that spends no time establishing the first act. Right from the get-go, we meet the titular Other Mommy, and the thrills and frights begin. It’s a really novel way to start a scary movie, wasting no time and going straight into the action. Director Rob Savage and screenwriter Nathan Elston (adapting Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House) get everything moving right away and it’s a wildly entertaining ride.

The story centers on seven-year-old Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), who can tell something is not right with her mom and dad, Ursula (Jessica Chastain) and Russell (Jay Duplass). Ursula seems to be the more career-oriented parent, while Russell is the carefree, fun-loving stay-at-home dad. Luckily, or perhaps unfortunately, for Bela, she has a friend: a supernatural entity she calls Other Mommy. Other Mommy wants something from Bela; she wants permission to “be in her heart.” Within the first ten minutes of the film, the entity commits her first violent act and from then on, forcing Ursula and Russell to do whatever it takes to protect their daughter while guarding a dark secret of their own.

This film cuts away from many traditional narrative beats seen in movies involving hauntings and children. Ursula and Russell immediately believe Bela. They never question what it is that they see, nor is there a plotline where the parents refuse to believe Bela or what they see. In fact, they remain quite level-headed about it considering they just experienced a paranormal event. It feels deeply refreshing to watch a horror film where the main characters make practical, sensible decisions.

But how do you stop an entity that can shape-shift and move matter at will?

Savage, alongside cinematographer Lowell A. Meyer and editor John Cutler, manipulates the mise-en-scene and mise-en-shot so that every camera movement and every jump cut becomes a potentially frightening moment. The film is not afraid to use jump scares, but they never feel cheap or unwarranted. Other Mommy is a playful demon. Surprise is part of its strategy. For the audience, though, it keeps you firmly on the edge of your seat.

    Other Mommy
Jessica Chastain (Ursula) in ‘Other Mommy’. (Courtesy of Universal Pictures)

While Chastain gets top billing – playing both Ursula and the primary form of Other Mommy – she earns every bit of it. She keeps the two characters distinctly separate, but when the music turns up and you realize you are looking at Other Mommy rather than Ursula, Chastain uses her entire physicality to embody the strain required for the entity to assume this human form. As Bela says early in the film, “she’s still new” at this. Chastain uses this raw physical tension to fully show this and it is remarkable to watch.

    Other Mommy

But this film ultimately belongs to Clark. The young actress carries the movie with her delicate portrayal of childhood innocence and being overwhelmed by all that is happening. When she observes her surroundings, she knows exactly the full context of what she is seeing. We understand the entire story through her eyes. It’s an incredible performance from such a young actor and it helps ground the film and gives the audience someone truly worth rooting for.

My only issue is the usual classic American approach to horror. The protagonists feel compelled to fight back, and American exceptionalism comes into play, and it undercuts the fear that is established. It is such an American response that if something is in your way, you have to get rid of it – kill it, even – regardless of what it is. Having watched plenty of Asian horror, where characters simply focus on surviving, Americans have to fight back, and it comes off as arrogant. At the same time, as good as the CGI can be, the overuse of it takes us away from the fear. Fortunately, Cutler is good at keeping the visuals very brief, cutting away quickly before the audience can linger on the CGI effects. Still, by the second half, some of the initial magic established at the beginning is gone.

There is a lot to enjoy in Other Mommy, and it will get the crowd screaming in fright. While it grows a little bit corny by the end, the film delivers enough suspense and thrills to make it well worth the price of the ticket.

    My Rating: 4 Stars

Run for your life: Experience “The End of Oak Street” in 4DX and A-Giant at Ayala Malls Cinemas!

This blockbuster season, Ayala Malls Cinemas elevates the movie-watching experience with their specialty cinemas, such as 4DX and A-Giant, offering more fun ways to enjoy movies. After braving strong currents in “The Odyssey” and swinging from skyscrapers in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” movie audiences can now flee from and chase dinosaurs in “The End of Oak Street,” a family action adventure film best enjoyed on a giant screen like A-Giant, or in a multi-sensory cinema like 4DX, where movie audiences get to be as close as they can get to all the roaring action.

    image 1

In “The End of Oak Street,” starring Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella (“My Old Ass”) and Christian Convery (who won a Children’s and Family Emmy for his lead role in “Sweet Tooth”), the Platt family seems like a regular 1980s suburban family, playing potato sack races with the community, joking around the table while having dinner, even having disagreements with the neighbor – and with each other – every once in a while. But all that changes when one day, a mysterious cosmic event rips their neighborhood from suburbia and transports Oak Street to someplace unknown, a place where dinosaurs roam the streets.

Co-producer J.J. Abrams (Star Wars and Star Trek franchises) is excited for audiences to see “the movie on the big screen. “‘The End of Oak Street” is a total thrill ride,” he says. “I’ve seen it with audiences. They scream and laugh and cry and cheer. It’s the sort of film that reminds you why you go to the movies.”

    image 2

In 4DX, the dinosaur chases are more exciting because every time someone starts to run, the seat will first thrust forward and then continue heaving, swaying or tilting, according to the action happening onscreen. When a character gets hit by one of the invading creatures, the audience will feel it too. When a dinosaur roars, there will be a rush of air. If anyone (dinosaur or human) sneezes or if water gets splashed, the audience will get a little wet too. And on A-Giant, featuring a screen that is four times bigger than the standard movie screen, the dinosaurs seem all the more larger than life.

Of course, what’s an Ayala Malls Cinemas experience without the premium features they’re known for, including top-notch Dolby Audio and Dolby Atmos technologies that produce rich, multi-dimensional sound, making every pounding footstep, creaking door, ear-splitting scream and deafening roar feel more vivid and immersive; cutting-edge laser projections that deliver sharper images; and plush seating with generous legroom that provide comfort amidst all the tension and heart-pounding action on the big screen.

For moviegoers who prefer the convenience of booking tickets online, Ayala Malls Cinemas has you covered with www.ayalaallaccess.com, where you can easily secure tickets, select preferred seats, and even pre-order your favorite snacks before your movie date. The Movie Snackbar offers refreshing drinks and delicious movie snacks, such as burgers, hotdog sandwiches, nachos, chips, fries and, of course, popcorn. Popcorn flavors include Blazing Cheddar, Texan BBQ, Sour Cream & Chives and Farmhouse Cheddar. Greenbelt 3 Cinemas also offers gourmet flavors, namely Truffle Parmesan, Smoked Gouda and Salted Caramel.

Watch the Platt family try to survive dinosaurs with your own family and friends. As a gift for those watching with a group, for every two (2) 4DX tickets presented at the 4DX/Cinema 5 door on the film’s opening day, August 12, patrons will get a limited-edition “The End of Oak Street” key chain.

Dinosaurs will move into Oak Street when “The End of Oak Street” opens only in cinemas August 12. Don’t miss out and watch all the action and adventure in Ayala Malls Cinemas, including on 4DX and A-Giant!

  • MOVIE REVIEW: A Hero’s Burden: A Review of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

MOVIE REVIEW: A Hero’s Burden: A Review of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Taking off right after the events of the previous film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, the latest installment, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in a world that has forgotten him. Spider-Man is now a tortured hero, who spends all of his time fighting crime as his masked vigilante. He’s no longer juggling school or work. In his spare time, he watches the posts, videos, and live feeds of his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) and the love of his life, MJ (Zendaya), who are living their college life at MIT without him. Free from the burden of putting anyone in danger for knowing his secret identity, he is better equipped to fight crime, yet deeply trapped by the choices of his own heroism.

Holland was born to play Peter Parker, it seems. He manages to capture the innocence, the pathos, and the vibrancy of the character, as well as the sheer physicality required for the role. In the past Spider-Man films, there were so many scenes where he was forced to take off his mask, mostly because producers and whatnot worried that audiences couldn’t connect with a masked hero. But not this film. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a huge chunk of the story has Spider-Man completely masked. Whether or not it’s really Tom Holland underneath the suit at all times is up for grabs, but his unmistakable voice and body language create that connection. It is such a vital part of the story: he is living behind the mask because it’s the only way he knows how to exist in this chapter of his life. The pain and loss of the previous film carry right over into this one.

The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, has an amazing sense of pacing and narrative flow. They quickly speed through time, yet we never feel lost. We see his life in large fragments, coming to understand just how lonely Peter Parker’s world has become by choosing to cut himself off. And all this ties wonderfully to the main villain propelling the story forward: a powerful telepath that can jump into other minds and possess their bodies. Only Spider-Man’s enhanced awareness and senses can detect when the villain jumps from one host to the next, giving him a natural immunity to having his mind controlled.

How does Spider-Man fight someone he cannot see and cannot touch?

As I said before, the pacing is so good because this isn’t just a character study of Peter Parker living with his choices, it’s also a full-scale superhero movie with a whole roster of heroes and villains turning up to complete the story.

There are the ones from the trailers, like The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Scorpion (Michael Mando), and The Hand; and then there are the surprise cameos that hadthe audience clapping and screaming when they showed up.

It’s packed with a lot of action and superheroics to ensure it never gets boring. But in a way, it’s also a coming-of-age story. Peter Parker must grow up all over again because the weight of his choices are bearing down on him. And as the trailer suggests, he is entering a whole new stage in his life; and a new stage in his mutation.

    Spider-Man: Brand New Day

In a way, this is a story about evolution and adaptation. One needs to change to survive, and while the choices Peter has made make him feel safe, they are also destroying him in the process. This is mirrored and contrasted by the choices of Bruce Banner and, in a beautiful and very enjoyable way, by The Punisher. And it is also reflected upon that of the villain.

Holland has this character down to a tee. He makes no false moves as Peter Parker. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon keep the film grounded in its emotional core, giving Peter something to miss. Bernthal is also such a joy to watch. This is still the Frank Castle we know, but he somehow manages to still fit into a PG film without breaking character. There’s a lightness to him that fits the movie’s tone while still retaining all the darkness of The Punisher.

And Sadie Sink? I’m not saying a word. But I thought she portrayed her character in the most effective way possible. She appears one hour into the film and completely shifts its course with her arrival and character reveal. She can express so much while staying completely still, letting her eyes do all the heavy lifting. It’s a wonderful performance that will be talked about for days to come.

I have yet to see a Tom Holland Spider-Man movie that I didn’t like. I hope he’ll want to play this character until he physically can’t do so anymore. I’m no longer a big fan of comic book movies, but this one I’ll still be showing up for an opening day.

    My Rating: 5 Stars
