    MOVIE REVIEW: Rental Family

It’s a strange feeling to be watching a film and be so absolutely charmed by it and then as the movie is moving towards its third act, your feelings take a full 180-degree turn and it undermines all the great things you felt in the film’s first two acts. That sums up my experience watching Hikari’s Rental Family.

It is an exquisitely crafted film – gorgeous direction, cinematography, performances, and even music by Jónsi (of Sigur Rós) and Alex Somers. All the elements work so wonderfully together, and the tone is so well balanced between comedy and a generous heaping of sadness. My issue stems in how the film treats its subject matter and how it shifts into favouring a Western framework while being situated in an Asian country.

The issue here is one of political and cultural representation.

‘Rental Family’ is the story of Philip Vanderploeg (Brendan Fraser), an American actor living and working in Japan. Philip has done a Japanese commercial seven years ago and has stayed on ever since doing odd jobs playing a “token white guy” in ads and TV spots. He’s presented as a person who is isolated and alone.

Philip then comes across a company that reenacts realistic fantasies – actors portraying a client’s family, boss, or even the guest at a wake, and other such scenarios – for a decent fee. He is hired to play a token white man, but often with a deeper connection to the client. He gets hired by a woman to play a journalist who is interviewing her father, who is an aging actor played by Akiro Emoto. He’s also hired to be buddies with a Japanese guy who likes to play video games. In another case, a young woman asks him to pose as her Canadian groom so she can give her parents the wedding they want for her and finally be free.

Naturally, Philip has a hard time with this. His boss, Shinji (Takehiro Hira), along with co-workers Aiko (Mari Yamamoto) and Kota (Kimura Bun), try to explain to him that what they are doing is capturing emotions and feelings; it isn’t exactly a lie, and that it’s something he may never fully understand as an American.

The most precarious of roles Philip has to play is that of the estranged father of a young half-Japanese girl, Mia (Shannon Mahina Gorman). Her mother, Hitomi (Shino Shinozaki), is applying at a prestigious school for Mia, and having both parents involved would help the application process a lot. But Hitomi doesn’t want Mia to know that Philip is an actor, so he has to fully commit to the role and truly pretend.

At a certain point, Philip begins to find his way, forging real connections with his regular clients, but most especially with Mia, who becomes a way for him to reconnect with his own estranged father. Things get complicated midway through, as Philip cannot help but invest himself fully in these relationships and pushes the boundaries of what is permissible and what is not in his job.

Hikari’s style is visually stunning and manages to visually capture the interconnectedness of Asian societies; and somehow isolate Philip from all of this, being an outsider. Fraser is magnificent, really embodying the everyman and then showing us how he transforms for every client. He is a very solid actor, anchoring the piece around his character. He is never flashy or overdoing it. Everything is just right. All the Japanese actors are equally fantastic, with Akira Emoto and Mari Yamamoto standing out in their roles.

Throughout the film, though, we see the importance and value of human connection; how these feelings hold weight and are even worth being paid for. It reminds me of the social media reels about certain Asian countries offering “rent-a-boyfriend for a day” services (for non-sexual dates and companionship). Apparently, it really is a thing. And at the start the film shows how important the social fabric is to Asian culture.

But halfway through the film, as Philip begins to get himself completely involved, he questions the company and what they are doing and goes beyond what is allowed by their rules of engagement. At this point, the film takes on an almost white saviour tone, suggesting that it is Philip who puts all these Japanese characters “in their place,” and because that things change because of him. This bothered me so much. I was absolutely charmed by this movie, by the direction, the performances, the cinematography, and the music, but when the white saviour moment happens, my experience with the film changed completely.

Instead of a story about a white man learning something new while living in Asia, it’s the Asian characters who learn something from the white man and this really didn’t sit well with me.

By all means, the film is well made, but I immediately understood that this movie was made for Western audiences. It was not fair in how it structured the narrative to pass judgement on the Japanese characters and position the white man as the hero of this story. It’s so beautifully made but I felt it was not made for me. It’s a story that amplifies American superiority and comes across as inauthentic and untrue when you consider the real-world conditions that we live now.

    My Rating: 2.5 Stars

Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy Brings the Hit Webtoon to the Big Screen

What if the world of your favorite story suddenly came to life and you were the only one who knew how it ends? That’s the thrilling setup for Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy, the big-screen adaptation of the hit webtoon Omniscient Reader by singNsong. Since debuting in 2018, the story has racked up over 200 million views worldwide, and now it’s showing in cinemas with a star-studded cast and jaw-dropping visuals. Directed by Kim Byung-woo, the film brings together an exciting mix of fantasy, action, and heart, as one ordinary man races to rewrite the story’s ending and save the world.

ORIGINAL OMNISCIENT READER 1920X1080p HORIZONTAL POSTER

    When Fiction Becomes Reality

Kim Dokja (Ahn Hyo-seop), an office worker in his 20s, has been following a web novel called Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse for over a decade. He’s the only reader of the obscure novel, and when its final chapter is published, he is less than impressed by its ending, where the heroic character Yu Junghyeok (Lee Min-ho) survives alone.

    Ominscient Reader Character Still 02Dokja

After writing an angry letter to the author, the world of the novel suddenly becomes real, and the hero, Yu Junghyeok, appears in front of Dokja.

Ominscient Reader Character Still 04Junghyeok re

Now, Dokja, armed with his knowledge of the novel’s plot, must work with Yu Junghyeok and his companions to rewrite the ending and save humanity from the apocalypse.

    Omniscient Reader The Prophecy 6

Director Kim Byung-woo explains the essence of the film: “It’s a story about meeting your colleagues and working together with them in a changed world. It’s a story about ordinary people joining forces to overcome the difficulties.”

A Star-Powered Cast Bringing the Story to Life

    Ominscient Reader Character Still 01Dokja

One of the most notable parts of Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy is its star-studded cast, led by Ahn Hyo-seop as Kim Dokja. Known for his roles in A Time Called You, Doctor Romantic, and Business Proposal, Ahn makes his big-screen debut in this film. He wanted to portray Dokja as a relatable, everyday character: “I wanted him to be the most common and ordinary. I wanted to portray him with the banality that everyone could relate to.”

    Ominscient Reader Character Still 03Junghyeok

Alongside Ahn, Lee Min-ho portrays Yu Junghyeok, the novel’s heroic protagonist who is forced to confront the apocalyptic reality. Lee, known for Pachinko and The King: Eternal Monarch, put a lot of thought into his character, saying, “I thought a lot about how to express the solitude of a person who keeps living immortality and lone survival… I put extra care in every detail of his actions, looks, and expressions to make him feel real.”

    Ominscient Reader Character Still 06Sangah

Chae Soo-bin, who has captivated audiences in Sweet & Sour and The Fabulous, plays Yu Sangah, Dokja’s work colleague and moral compass. She says she was drawn to the film’s thrilling pace, saying, “I was really into the speedy and thrilling script… I wanted to make her the most realistic one in the film.”

Shin Seung-ho, NANA, JISOO, and Kwon Eun-seong round out the talented ensemble, each bringing their unique flair to their roles and adding depth to the story’s journey.

    Visually Stunning and Action-Packed

The film’s captivating world is brought to life through the work of Korea’s top filmmakers. Cinematographer Jeon Hye-jin, known for Pachinko, and action choreographer Jung Yoon-hyun, who worked on The Age of Shadows, have crafted stunning visuals and high-energy action sequences that enhance the thrilling narrative. As director Kim Byung-woo explains, the goal was to create a film that blends both the real and the fantastic in a way that feels grounded and immersive.

    Ominscient Reader Official Still 02

The film also boasts cutting-edge visual effects that bring the merged world of fiction and reality to life, with the help of VFX experts like Jung Sung-jin, whose past works include Along with the Gods and Noryang: Deadly Sea. VFX supervisor Kim Woo-cheol shared his excitement: “The theme of a novel merged into reality was interesting. It was a project that provoked me to dare with the thought ‘how should I express it visually?’”

    Ominscient Reader Character Still 14Gilyeong

Art director Lee Mok-won also says, “After ALONG WITH THE GODS, I have always wanted to do another film of fantasy genre if an opportunity presents itself. So when director Kim Byung-woo offered me this project, I said yes without a thought,” describing how quickly he got immersed into the project. He adds, “I put a lot of thoughts on making spaces in the film feel as realistic as possible. As much as it’s a fantasy film filled with unrealistic events, the audience would feel them feasible only when the spaces in the film feel realistic, that’s what I thought” giving room for imagination about a well-balanced spectacle between fantasy and reality.

A Must-Watch for Fans and Newcomers Alike

With its mix of heart-pounding action, emotional depth, and stunning visuals, Omniscient Reader is more than just another webtoon adaptation.

  • Movie Review: Struggling With Two Genres, ‘The Amateur’ Is a Movie Without a Solid Identity

Movie Review: Struggling With Two Genres, ‘The Amateur’ Is a Movie Without a Solid Identity

There’s something about the trailer of ‘The Amateur’ that leads us to expect something that’s thrilling and action-packed; like a glossier cousin of the Bourne franchise. The premise of a genius CIA cryptographer who goes rogue to find the killers of his wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan), on a quest for vengeance gives us ‘John Wick’ vibes but with gadgets and technology. So, it’s kind of jarring to sit in the theater and watch as the film takes an interesting approach by focusing the drama on whether protagonist Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) can bring it upon himself to kill. All the exciting gadget-centered traps seen in the trailer are not really what’s on the spotlight but whether a brilliant and rational computer geek can become a cold-blooded killer.

At the start, the film takes pains to show us how much Charlie is rather insulated from the world. He lives in a beautiful, lavish cottage filled with lush greenery, which tells us he doesn’t live in the city but away from it. His wife, Sarah, travels a lot and is always inviting him to come along but he doesn’t. Always finds an excuse, work-related mostly, it seems. As a CIA codebreaker, Charlie is sent some top-secret files from an anonymous informant that implicates his boss in something politically disastrous but this is pushed aside when he is told that his wife has been killed in a violent event that led to her being taken hostage and then killed.

    amateur dtrl1 uhd r709f stills 241108 28003417

Consumed by her loss, Charlie uses the secret files to blackmail his bosses to give him field training so that he can chase after his wife’s killers and take vengeance. But his bosses at the CIA are not happy that he has the files and that they are being blackmailed and are also attempting to take him out of the equation.

    amateur dtrl1 uhd r709f stills 241108 3f10dbd4

So, Charlie must get what he needs from the CIA before they take him out while chasing after some cold-blooded killers who are way more experienced than he is.

On paper, it sounds exciting. I bet the book that it’s based on, the 1981 novel by Robert Littell with the same name, is probably exciting. The book being released in 1981, it’s probably a lot more low-fi than this version which uses hi-tech traps for Charlie to exact his vengeance, as guns are not his specialty. As his trainer (Laurence Fishburne) tells him at some point, he uses these elaborate set-ups because he’s afraid to get his hands dirty, which makes an interesting thesis.

    amateur dtrl1 uhd r709f stills 241108 a69d52be

Rather than focusing on how Charlie sets up and pulls off his traps, the film takes several digressions to show visions of Sarah intruding into his daily life and memories of her. The film spends a whole hour preparing Charlie to go after his wife’s killers. Throughout this first half, it shows us how brilliant Charlie is but also how pulling a trigger is harder than it looks. Then the next half has his trying to execute his plans and him dealing with the repercussions of his actions. Director James Hawes and screenwriter Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli give Charlie as much time to unfurl at a club after he makes his first kill.

It’s these scenes, which paints Charlie as a complex person growing into his new vigilante persona, that slows down the whole film. The dramatic, character-driven parts are not in synch with the aspects of the film that falls under the spy action-thriller tone. It’s not as cohesive as, let’s say, ‘Collateral’ or the dense and cerebral film ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.’

    The Amateur
Image Source: 20th Century Studios PH FB Page

Malek is a ball of nerves as Charlie. He has the same affectations as his character in ‘Mr. Robot’ but he’s allowed to be human here as Charlie is not a sociopath (or is his character in Mr. Robot on the spectrum?). He handles the dramatic parts well and how his character subtly builds his confidence after every strike. The changes are subtle but clear. The ones who steal the show though are Laurence Fishburne’s Henderson and Jon Bernthal’s small role as a spy in the CIA who Charlie has admiration for. As Henderson, Fishburne exudes an “I’ve-seen-it-all” attitude and carries himself with such an air of confidence that it makes Henderson so scary while he’s being warm and nurturing to Charlie. It’s an interesting role that Fishburne knows exactly how to elevate. Bernthal, on the other hand, has two or three scenes but he has a screen presence that fits his role so well and creates a wonderful counterpoint for Charlie. His appearance on the latter half of the film leaves such a great impact as we see Charlie facing off with the person, he admires the most.

While polished and well-crafted, ‘The Amateur’ is a different movie than what it appears to be. As a spy thriller, it short-cuts the things we want to see. As a character-study of a man who is reconciling turning into a vigilante, it does not go deep enough to have anything clear to say about the moral quandary of taking justice into your own hands. It has the makings of a sequel and hopefully, they’ll fine tune the general tone and figure out its identity.

    My Rating:

    stars 2 5

  • MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is way over the top and we like it that way

The first twenty minutes of ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘ was a struggle for me. The movie – set later in the future after the events of ‘Godzilla versus Kong’ and explores the lore that was established by the Apple TV series ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ – departs from the previously established characteristics of both monsters and works to humanize King Kong even further. He is now living in the Hallow Earth but will go back to our world as he is suffering from something as mundane as an infected tooth. This large-scale sequence of King Kong having his tooth removed by the humans is big, outrageous, and so silly that it was jarring for me at the start. This was all necessary set up to let us know the full shift in tone of this film.

Once I was able to finally align myself with the movie did I start to enjoy how unserious it was about everything. This iteration of the world manages to create futuristic technology despite having huge monsters destroy cities in mere minutes. Monster attacks are commonplace, and Godzilla always comes to fight them. But the world is in shambles, but it also isn’t? Okay. All the power and majesty that both King Kong and Godzilla possessed in previous films have all gone as the humanization of them has just turned them into loveable spectacles of power. When they fight, it gets crazy enough that there are some wrestling moves that get sneaked in and they come from the weirdest characters to boot. When one monsters manages to do a suplex, it’s so left of center that the whole cinema I was watching in went insane (and so did I) and I just knew that I had to throw everything out the window. This movie, directed by Adam Wingard and written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater, were going for the spills and thrills.

After all, after the first two movies and we were faced with Mechagodzilla, where else can you go? How serious can you get?

So all the human stuff – played by Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, Bryan Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle – is just context to help us understand why the big fight scenes are coming. They attempt to create a mother-daughter story between Hall’s Dr. Ilene Andrews and Hottle’s Jia, the last survivor of the Iwi tribe of Skull Island, but it never really flies because it has no real connection between the upcoming battle between King Kong and the film’s main antagonist, Skar King.

    Godzilla x Kong ORG 20221013 17947

To heighten the film’s over-the-top nature, the fight scenes between King Kong and Skar King almost look like clips of a Tekken match. It’s fast paced and brutal. It’s acrobatic. They use sophisticated weapons. And there’s one scene that manages to defy gravity (literally) and on the big screen, it’s a blast.

Godzilla x Kong ORG TRL 016

In a way, all the human stuff is dispensable. It’s just needed for us to be able to follow through with the story, to have people explain things out loud what we are seeing – thankfully, King Kong, Godzilla, Skar King, and a younger ape don’t talk because that would be too much – so that we can properly contextualize all the big fight scenes that we’re waiting for and so that we can see how King Kong ends up with a mechanical arm (as seen on the trailer).

Godzilla x Kong ORG TRL 025

The fight scenes are cinematic. They are loud and big and brutal. It’s bloody and gruesome and it’s what you come to the cinema to see. It leans into the silliness of the exercise so that it can utilize all possibilities for large-scale monster fighting that we have come to expect in a movie like this.

After all, we’ve seen Godzilla fight monsters on different cities already in the first installments and we’ve even seen Godzilla and King Kong duke it out against each other and then Mechagodzilla in the last one. Where else can they go? They went silly and we are all the happier for it.

  • Beautiful Animation, A Timeless Adventure and More Reasons Why “Migration” is a Must-Watch

In “Migration,” the Mallard family is led by dad Mack (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani), who is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, and mom Pam (Elizabeth Banks), who prefers to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax (Caspar Jennings) and duckling daughter Gwen (Tresi Gazal)—the whole wide world. When a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam seizes the opportunity and persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.

Find out what some reviewers are saying about the movie!

Says Deadline, “It is the kind of animated entertainment that all ages will find something to like, and in terms of the creative talent involved it is a breath of fresh air in the genre.”

“Benjamin Renner’s new comedy ‘Migration’ offers a winning combination of a charming narrative and distinctive animation style,” says The Hollywood Reporter.

“It’s breezy and lighthearted but manages to hit a bullseye when it comes to the type of stories we need this season,” Collider shares.

Of the film’s animation, the Los Angeles Times says, “Where many animated productions sport a plastic sheen, ‘Migration’s’ textured look conveys a less-manufactured touch. There are lovely vistas taken in from the air. The hue palette is more muted than the usual candy-colored explosions. The light feels gentler with mellower shadows. We’re often in the magic hours of dusk or dawn. In the distance, the haze blurs to an almost watercolor effect.”

“Illumination soars to creative new heights with a hilarious CGI adventure that’s beautifully animated. Migration delivers a feast for the eyes that tickles your funny bone with wonderful character dynamics,” says MovieWeb.

  • Patrick Wilson “furthers The Further” in his directorial debut for “Insidious: The Red Door”

In the film, the horror franchise’s original cast, including Wilson, Ty Simpkins and Rose Byrne, returns. To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.

“It’s exciting to play an ordinary character in an extraordinary situation,” says Wilson. “A very normal family – and all of a sudden, they have this crazy trauma! He travels into another dimension and has to fight a demon! It can go as crazy as you want it to, if you start from a place of real emotion. I like pushing myself, whether it’s physically, or emotionally, or creating tension, or finding humor in the dark moments, or darkness in the light moments.”

That idea – balancing light and dark – became the central theme of his directorial debut, according to Wilson. “Dealing with trauma, dealing with light and dark and the balance, and the art of the story – all of these seeds that were sown in the first film that now come to fruition,” he says. “Some blossom, some ripen, and some spoil.”

Wilson knew that directing his first film would be a learning experience – as it should be. Referring to all the different directors he’s worked with he says, “They’re so different in the way they approach it, and there’s no one way. That’s what I love about this business, and what I love about directors. There are so many ways to get your film made. So my goal was to capitalize on my strengths, what excites me, what interests me, what I’m passionate about. I don’t quite know my style – I think I’m still finding my own style. I’m not so bold to think I’ve figured it out. I’m learning – I’m in a constant state of learning.”

“Patrick had a very strong vision for the film, and knew the direction of where he wanted to take this Lambert family saga,” says producer James Wan, who was also Wilson’s director in the first two Insidious films, as well as in Conjuring and Aquaman. “That made me really excited, since he’d be returning to play the character he played in the first two films. He’s building on the world we had created together whilst adding his own take to it. We talked and discussed about a wide range of things – story, characters, tone, scares, new villain, furthering the Further.”
