  • MOVIE REVIEW: Reverent in Its Love for the Original, ‘Masters of the Universe’ Embraces Its Irreverence and Gives Nicholas Galitzine a Chance to Have Fun

MOVIE REVIEW: Reverent in Its Love for the Original, ‘Masters of the Universe’ Embraces Its Irreverence and Gives Nicholas Galitzine a Chance to Have Fun

The very name of the character in his godlike form, “He-Man,” was already distracting when I was a kid, and even more so as an adult. It’s why I entered the cinema for Masters of the Universe with very low expectations. Unless the filmmakers were going to lean into how silly it all really is, there was no way I could imagine this narrative taking itself seriously. Luckily for me, director Travis Knight along with screenwriters Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and David Callaham knows how to have a good time. Masters of the Universe is a 141-minutes of self-referential comedy that tries to stay true to the show’s spirit while poking fun at itself.

In Masters of the Universe, the story begins with a narration by Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), as he reflects on growing up on the world of Eternia. As a prince, he is a bit of a clown who doesn’t take his role very seriously. This upsets his father, King Randor (James Purefoy), who wants him to grow up stronger and take his role more seriously.

    Masters of the Universe
(l-r): Roboto (Kristen Wiig), Man At Arms (Idris Elba), Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), Teela (Camila Mendes) and Cringer in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

However, their family friction is cut short when the mystical warlord Skeletor (Jared Leto) launches a surprise attack on the kingdom. Because Randor’s bloodline comes from a long line of champions who can wield the Sword of Power, the Sorceress (Morena Baccarin), the guardian of that power sends Adam to his mother’s home planet, Earth, to keep the blade out of Skeletor’s hands. But Adam, still a child, loses the sword and finds himself standed on Earth for over 15 years.

Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), Teela (Camila Mendes) and Cringer in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

Now an adult, Adam is isolated and unhappy in his corporate HR job while trying constantly searching for the sword that can bring him home. When he finally locates the blade, he enlists the help of Teela (Camila Mendes) to make his way back to Eternia. Upon arrival, he discovers that Skeletor has completely destroyed his homeland, forcing him to wield the power within to become the champion of his homeworld.

Jared Leto stars as ‘Skeletor’ in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

What is hilarious is just how silly the creators of this movie think the whole premise is. Adam’s extended stay on Earth serves as a clever a way to acknowledge the property’s inherent campiness; that way, when the narrative finally shifts to the science fiction and fantasy, they can go completely all out and have as much fun as they want. There is very little story involved here, though Adam does experience a lovely reckoning regarding his relationship with his father, but character’s depth remains secondary to a barrage of fight scenes and there’s even a chase scene on a space ship.

    Masters of the Universe
Nicholas Galitzine stars as He-Man in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

Knight and his crew deliver a lot of fan service here while acknowledging at the source material’s questionable names and abilities in the first film – like Fisto (played by Johannes Haukur Johannesson), who seems very much aware of the joke as well. Ultimately, everyone, including Galitzine and Leto, are not afraid to amp up the homoeroticism in the imagery of the classic 80s cartoon.

Masters of the Universe Idris Nick Photo Credit Columbia Pictures

Galitzine attacks the role with such childlike wonder. He is clearly having a blast playing a kid who never really grew up but now finds himself inside the body of a muscle-bound god. There’s a levity and whimsical nature to his performance that really makes Masters of the Universe an absolute joy to watch. He is entirely in on the joke without ever overplaying it.

Sam C Wilson stars as Trap Jaw in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

The rest of the cast is having an equally fantastic time, from Idris Elba (who brings a wonderful gravity to Teela’s father, Man-at-Arms) to Mendes, and even Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, who gets to play the evil henchwoman to the absolute hilt.

Alison Brie stars as ‘Evil-Lyn’ in MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

It’s incredibly refreshing to encounter a movie that proudly decides to have fun and brings the audience along for the ride. There is immense reverence and love for the original 80s cartoon here, but the affection is so secure that the filmmakers can openly poke fun at the property’s inherent absurdities. They masterfully weave in various nostalgic references, even reaching outside of He-Man universe like playing songs and soundtracks of from other iconic fantasy franchises. Because the plot is secondary from the very get-go, we are directed to just what happens and enjoy the journey.

For a film that looks so glossy and expensive, it’s great that the filmmakers were cool enough to embrace irreverence rather than attempt to be serious. This was absolutely the right creative direction to take and make sure you stick around, because you will definitely want to watch all the post-credit scenes.

    My Rating: 4 Stars

    stars 4 0

Masters of the Universe trades self-serious fantasy for glorious, unapologetic 80s camp. It is an absolute blast that gives Nicholas Galitzine plenty of room to shine. Don’t miss out on the fun, check showtimes here, and make sure to stay through the credits!

Meet Skeletor and His Ruthless Allies in New “Masters of the Universe” Featurette

Eternia has fallen under the grip of Skeletor’s dark reign in Masters of the Universe, and the fate of the kingdom now rests in the hands of He-Man. Returning from his exile on Earth, Adam must embrace his destiny once more and lead the fight against the forces threatening his home. While heroes rally behind him, Skeletor commands a fearsome army of villains determined to keep Eternia under their control.

The newly released “Forces of Evil” featurette shines a spotlight on the skull-faced tyrant and the dangerous allies who stand at his side.

Watch the “Forces of Evil” Featurette:

    Skeletor’s Relentless Pursuit of Power

At the center of Eternia’s darkness is Skeletor, voiced by Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto. According to producer Jason Blumenthal, the villain’s hunger for power stems from something much deeper.

“Skeletor, on his surface, seems like he just wants power and he’s willing to do whatever it takes, but it’s what’s lacking in him that makes him want that power,” says producer Jason Blumenthal. “And what’s lacking in him is what’s inside of Adam. I’d call it a moral compass. You either have one or you don’t. And if you don’t, you are evil.”

    MOTU Skeletor
Jared Leto stars as Skeletor in Masters of the Universe

A longtime fan of He-Man, Leto brings both familiarity and fresh energy to the iconic character. His performance balances menace with unexpected humor, creating a memorable interpretation of the classic villain.

“We were shooting a scene and I was laughing so hard that he brought me to tears,” director Travis Knight says of Leto. “He will make these choices that you don’t see coming and that really does help to make Skeletor distinctive. He’s just an extraordinarily memorable villain.”

Evil-Lyn Brings Magic, Ambition, and Chaos

Standing closest to Skeletor is Evil-Lyn, portrayed by Alison Brie. As a powerful enchantress and trusted lieutenant, she plays a crucial role in advancing Skeletor’s plans. Yet beneath her loyalty lies a thirst for power of her own.

Brie was drawn to the film’s ability to balance action, humor, and self-awareness.

    MOTU EvilLyn
Alison Brie plays Evil-Lyn in Masters of the Universe

“I think the most exciting thing to me about this iteration of He-Man is the sense of humor,” Brie says. “Skeletor and Evil-Lyn had a really funny rapport in the original series. Some of the iterations since then have been more serious, and I like that this movie has a meta quality. It’s able to laugh at itself, but also deliver for the fans and take itself seriously when it needs to.”

The complicated dynamic between Evil-Lyn and Skeletor remains one of the story’s most intriguing elements.

“She vacillates between sort of loving Skeletor, and idolizing him, and being very excited for him to get the power, but secretly she wants to have all the power,” Brie says. “She knows how to press his buttons, but she’s also there to build him up. She notoriously has no loyalty to Skeletor. She likes to pretend that she does, but we all know the power dynamic between Evil-Lyn and Skeletor is super volatile.”

Trap Jaw Joins the Villainous Army

Another formidable member of Skeletor’s ranks is Trap Jaw, the fearsome cyborg warrior brought to life by Sam C. Wilson. With extensive prosthetics and an intimidating appearance, the character presents a unique challenge for the actor.

    MOTU TrapJaw
Sam C. Wilson plays Trap Jaw in Masters of the Universe

The way that I play him, he’s a really gruesome kind of guy,” Wilson says. “His jaw hurts his head, so he’s got a headache and none of it is very comfortable. With the amazing work that the prosthetics team has done, I can make this guy feel eerie and strange.”

The result is a villain who looks as unsettling as he is dangerous.

    Goat Man Charges Into Battle

Adding even more muscle to Skeletor’s army is Goat Man, portrayed by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, the 2018 World’s Strongest Man. The towering strongman, known worldwide for his imposing presence, credits He-Man as one of his early inspirations.

Playing the horned and demonic warrior was a full-circle moment for Björnsson.

“All of us were at some point influenced by these characters, which were so popular back in the day,” Björnsson says. “I grew up with the generation that had He-Man, and being able to be a part of this was just an honor for me.”

The Battle for Eternia Begins June 3

With Skeletor’s forces stronger than ever, He-Man and his allies face their greatest challenge yet. Packed with action, humor, and beloved characters from the iconic franchise, Masters of the Universe promises an epic showdown between good and evil.

Masters of the Universe opens in Philippine cinemas on June 3. Distributed locally by Columbia Pictures PH.

Meet the Warriors Fighting Beside He-Man in “Masters of the Universe”

Far from the kingdom he was born to protect, Prince Adam has spent most of his life on Earth, unaware of the destiny waiting for him. In Masters of the Universe, Nicholas Galitzine stars as the young royal who is called back to Eternia to embrace his true identity as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.

But He-Man’s journey is not one he faces alone.

As the threat of Skeletor, played by Jared Leto, grows stronger, a team of loyal warriors rises to stand beside Eternia’s greatest hero. From fierce fighters to battle-tested protectors, these legendary allies are ready to defend their world at all costs.

Watch the “Heroes of Eternia” vignette here:

Teela Steps Forward as a Fearless Warrior

Camila Mendes takes on the role of Teela, a skilled warrior with a deep understanding of the secrets surrounding Grayskull. Strong-willed and fiercely independent, Teela has spent years surviving under Skeletor’s oppressive rule while helping protect Eternia alongside her father, Man-At-Arms.

Mendes describes Teela as someone shaped by hardship and responsibility.

“Teela is independent and self-sufficient. She had to grow up fast after her father sort of gave up on life a little bit,” Mendes says. “She had to toughen up and look after herself, in addition to looking after her father. I think she’s been hardened by that experience. But deep down, she has this inner sensitivity and really deep empathy.”

Despite her hardened exterior, Teela still carries compassion and empathy that make her one of Eternia’s strongest heroes.

    MOTU ManAtArms

Idris Elba Brings Man-At-Arms to Life

Idris Elba portrays Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms, one of Eternia’s most respected warriors and a trusted ally of King Randor. As the battle against Skeletor intensifies, he continues to lead the resistance while helping guide Prince Adam toward his destiny.

For Elba, joining Masters of the Universe was both exciting and nostalgic.

“Everyone wanted to be He-Man,” he recalls. “It’s a massive slice of nostalgia and just being a part of it as an actor feels like an honor. I’ve got my son who’s young and into it as well. So passing that on, and being in a film that he might want to see feels good.”

The actor also shared how meaningful it is to introduce the franchise to a younger generation, especially his own son.

    MOTU Teela

    Ram Man Charges Into Battle

Played by Jon Xue Zhang, Ram Man delivers power and pure force on the battlefield. Famous for using his head, literally, to solve problems, the character is known for his spring-powered legs and unstoppable attacks.

“Ram Man is often described as the human battering ram,” Zhang says. “He’s got springs for legs. He’s very strong and he has a propensity for using his head to resolve problems. It may not be in the most intelligent way, but it’s certainly the most direct way.”

Direct, fearless, and always ready for action, Ram Man brings explosive energy to the fight for Eternia.

    Mekaneck Turns Pain Into Purpose

James Wilkinson stars as Mekaneck, a towering warrior whose extendable neck gives him a unique advantage in battle. After surviving a devastating neck injury, Mekaneck received life-changing enhancements from Man-At-Arms and transformed his tragedy into strength.

“He had this crazy-bad injury with his neck,” Wilkinson explains. “Man-At-Arms did a bunch of work on him and he then got this superpower of an extendable neck. Now he uses it to protect other people. So he had this tragic accident and then decided to help people.”

His resilience and loyalty make him one of He-Man’s most dependable allies.

    MOTU 5

Fisto Fights with Strength and Honor

Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson plays Fisto, a fierce warrior known for his powerful iron hand. According to the actor, the character earned his nickname after sacrificing his arm to save Man-At-Arms during battle.

“Fisto and Man-At-Arms, they’re brothers. And my character saved his life in battle, but lost an arm in the process. So, Man-At-Arms builds him this fist,” explains Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, who plays Fisto.

Bound by loyalty and brotherhood, Fisto and Man-At-Arms continue to fight side by side against the forces threatening Eternia.
