Ahead of its official Philippine release, DreamWorks Animation’s “Forgotten Island” will hold nationwide sneak screenings on September 19 and 20, giving audiences a first look at the fantasy adventure before it opens in cinemas on September 23.

Making the occasion even more special, the Philippines will be the first country to release the film theatrically.

    2 5

Inspired by Filipino culture, mythology, music, and family traditions, “Forgotten Island” brings together a remarkable lineup of Filipino and Filipino-American talent both in front of the microphone and on its soundtrack.

    Filipino Talent Takes Center Stage

Leading the voice cast are Liza Soberano and Grammy and Academy Award winner H.E.R., who play lifelong best friends Raissa and Jo.

They are joined by a powerhouse supporting cast that includes Manny Jacinto, Lea Salonga, Dolly de Leon, and Jo Koy, along with Jenny Slate, Dave Franco, and Ronny Chieng.

The Filipino representation continues through the film’s music.

Its soundtrack features artists including SB19, BINI, KATSEYE’s Sophia Laforteza, Ruby Ibarra, and Carl Angelo, while cast members Lea Salonga, H.E.R., and Liza Soberano also contribute songs to the film.

It is a lineup that gives “Forgotten Island” a distinctly Filipino heartbeat, pairing a big-screen DreamWorks adventure with voices and sounds familiar to audiences at home.

    Watch the trailer here:

A Friendship Put to the Ultimate Test

At the center of “Forgotten Island” is the bond between Jo and Raissa.

Best friends since grade school, the two are about to leave high school behind and begin separate chapters in their lives. Before going their different ways, they spend one final night together.

    Then everything changes.

Jo and Raissa stumble upon a mysterious portal that transports them to Nakali, a fantastical island filled with creatures drawn from the stories they grew up hearing from their Filipino families.

    SneakScreeningsFI

Some of those creatures are helpful. Others are frightening. And waiting somewhere on the island is a danger far bigger than either of them expected.

As they search for a way home, Jo and Raissa discover the devastating cost of escaping Nakali: the memories of their friendship are slowly disappearing.

The longer they remain on the island, the more they risk forgetting each other completely.

    Welcome to Nakali

Helping Jo and Raissa through their strange new surroundings is Raww, a well-meaning but hapless weredog voiced by Dave Franco, along with a small but fearless group of companions.

But Nakali is also home to one of its most terrifying figures, The Dreaded Manananggal, voiced by Tony Award winner Lea Salonga.

With their memories fading and time running out, Jo and Raissa must find a way to leave the island while holding on to the friendship that brought them this far.

It is a colorful fantasy adventure, but beneath the magical creatures and larger-than-life world is something deeply relatable: the fear that comes with growing apart from someone who has been part of your life for years.

From the Team Behind “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”

“Forgotten Island” comes from DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind films such as “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Shrek,” and “The Wild Robot.”

  • Get to Know the Characters of ‘Lisa Frankenstein’: Your Pre-Valentine’s Treat in Cinemas Feb 7

Zelda Williams, the visionary behind “Lisa Frankenstein,” lights up when discussing the genius of Diablo Cody’s scriptwriting. With a nod to Cody’s uncanny ability to sculpt vivid characters, Williams delves into the heart of a tale that blends romance, comedy, and a touch of the macabre. It’s 1989, and our protagonist, Lisa Swallows, portrayed with depth by Kathryn Newton, finds herself in a tale of rebirth and romance that is anything but ordinary.

“The thing I enjoy most about her writing is the personality infused into all of it,” says Williams, who had auditioned for Juno (also written by Cody, for which she won the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award) very early in her acting career. “It’s clear immediately who these characters are, whether they’re for you or not. That sort of strong flavor choice will always be my cup of tea.”

In Lisa Frankenstein, it’s 1989 and Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), an awkward 17-year-old, is trying to adjust to a new school and a new life after her mother’s death and her father’s hasty remarriage. Despite the unwavering support offered by her plucky cheerleader step sister Taffy (Liza Soberano), Lisa only finds solace in the abandoned cemetery near her house, where she tends to the grave of a young man who died in 1837 – and whose corpse she unwittingly reanimates (Cole Sprouse). Feeling obligated to help the poor soul regain his humanity, Lisa embarks on a quest to breathe new life into her long-dead new companion. All she needs to succeed are some freshly harvested body parts and Taffy’s broken tanning bed.

    Kathryn Newton

Lisa Swallows (played by Kathryn Newton)

Lisa is a 17-year-old misfit, too self-conscious and withdrawn to fit in with either the popular crowd or even the other outsiders at school, the punks, Goths, and stoners. In the wake of her mother’s murder, she barely speaks. “Lisa Swallows is this girl who isn’t heard, who doesn’t speak up,” Newton says. “She doesn’t think she matters very much. She’s been through a lot of trauma, and she is so hurt and shy she would rather not bring any attention to herself.”

Cole Sprouse as the Creature Kathryn Newton as Lisa Swallows

    The Creature (Cole Sprouse)

The Creature is the corpse that Lisa unintentionally brings back to life. A professional pianist who took his own life after being rejected by a woman he adored, the Creature was a hopeless romantic, a gentleman well versed in 19th century manners and etiquette, qualities he retains in death, or rather, undeath. He feels immense gratitude toward Lisa that soon blossoms into genuine adoration. “Over time, I think the Creature realizes he’s deeply in love with Lisa,” Sprouse says. “He wants to be her protector, trying to make her feel heard and understood.”

    Liza Soberano Lisa Frankenstein 2

    Taffy (Liza Soberano)

Taffy is the kind, if somewhat clueless, stepsister of Lisa. Empathetic, earnest and wildly popular, naturally perfect Taffy is the antithesis of the stereotypical “mean girl” – she welcomes Lisa into her family with open arms and does everything she can to help her fit in. “Taffy is my favorite character,” says Cody.

    Carla Gugino

    Janet (Carla Gugino)

Janet is Taffy’s narcissistic mom who dotes on her own daughter, but is endlessly disapproving of Lisa. “Janet lives in Janet’s world for sure – she is definitely the hero of her own story,” says Gugino. “Janet has created and curated a perfect world and a perfect family in her mind, and she cannot imagine how Lisa would not want to be a part of it.”

    Dale (Joe Chrest)

Lisa’s own father, Dale, does little to intervene on his child’s behalf, leaving Janet to exert her domineering influence at every turn. “Dale is such a checked-out dad,” producer Mason Novick says. “Diablo writes a lot of dad characters who are just oblivious to what’s going on. I don’t want to say men in Diablo’s scripts are knuckleheads, but the focus of the conversations are on women. The father is around, and he’s really funny, but he’s not the one moving the story forward. He is very much the passive husband.”

    Michael Trent (Henry Eikenberry)

Michael is Lisa’s crush whom she describes as an “intellectual punk dreamboat.” Although he initially seems to display an odd kind of fascination with Lisa, he doesn’t necessarily harbor romantic feelings toward her. “He’s so clueless,” says Eikenberry of his character.

Don’t miss out on this heartwarming, funny, and slightly gory undead romance. Follow Universal Pictures Ph on Facebook and @universalpicturesph on Instagram for the latest updates. The Challenge of Casting Taffy

In this eagerly awaited film, Liza shines as Taffy, the cheerleader stepsister to the central character, Lisa Swallows, played by Kathryn Newton. Director Zelda Williams, cherishing the legacy of her father Robin Williams, meticulously searched for an actress who could subtly yet powerfully deliver the movie’s most candid and challenging lines. Liza emerged as the perfect fit, bringing depth and charm to Taffy’s character. According to Williams, in an interview with ANC, Taffy is “most people’s favorite part of the movie.”

Taffy: A Role of Depth and Delight

Acclaimed screenwriter Diablo Cody voices her admiration for Taffy, “Taffy is my favorite character. She’s a beacon of positivity, and even when she’s unwittingly condescending or tone-deaf, her intentions are always kind. She’s more protective of Lisa than anyone else in the film, other than the Creature.”

  • Oscar Winner Diablo Cody Unveils ‘Lisa Frankenstein’: A Unique Coming-of-Age Horror Starring Liza Soberano, Kathryn Newton, and Cole Sprouse

“Lisa Frankenstein,” penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody, is all set to breathe new life into cinemas this February. This unique blend of teen horror-comedy and coming-of-age romance, starring Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, and Liza Soberano, offers a fresh and sardonic twist on Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic, tells the story of Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), an awkward 17-year-old trying to adjust to a new school and a new life after her mother’s death and her father’s hasty remarriage. Despite the unwavering support offered by her plucky cheerleader step-sister Taffy (Liza Soberano), Lisa only finds solace in the abandoned cemetery near her house, where she tends to the grave of a young man who died in 1837 – and whose corpse she unwittingly reanimates (Cole Sprouse). Feeling obligated to help the poor soul regain his humanity, Lisa embarks on a quest to breathe new life into her long-dead new companion. All she needs to succeed are some freshly harvested body parts and Taffy’s broken tanning bed.

“I have always toyed with themes of transformation and reinvention,” says screenwriter Diablo Cody, who catapulted onto the Hollywood stage with 2007’s “Juno,” for which she won the Academy Award, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice Award for best original screenplay.

    Diablo Cody’s Visionary Storytelling

Cody’s unique take on the Frankenstein narrative is infused with her signature wit and insight. “In everything I write, someone is going through a dramatic change, whether it’s becoming possessed by a demon or dealing with a new stage of life,” continues Cody, who is also known for penning the acclaimed film “Young Adult,” starring Charlize Theron, and the Megan Fox-led cult-classic “Jennifer’s Body.” “The question I’m always asking is: are we the same person after a profound change? How many parts can we swap or replace before we’re a totally new entity? This movie is a pretty literal interpretation of that!” Cody muses, exploring themes of identity and transformation in her darkly comedic style.

    A Nod to the Classics

Inspiration for “Lisa Frankenstein” partly stems from John Hughes’ “Weird Science,” with Cody aiming to create a female-centered narrative within a similar framework. The 1980s setting adds an extra layer of nostalgic charm to the film. “The idea of using a tanning bed as the power source [to bring the dead back to life] was hilarious to me,” Cody says. Inspired by another off-beat spin on Frankenstein mythology, the 1985 John Hughes film “Weird Science,” Cody set her own take on the story in the 1980s. “In that film, two teenage boys literally design their dream woman, animate her with electricity and watch in awe as she improves their lives,” she says. “I always thought it would be fun to see a female-centered take on that story.”

Playing the all-important role of Lisa Swallows is Kathryn Newton (“Pokémon: Detective Pikachu,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”), who shares that one of the biggest influences for her portrayal was Gene Wilder’s performance in “Young Frankenstein” (1974). “Gene Wilder was an incredible actor who was able to master that in-between of playing a character that’s so over-the-top, but still grounded and pulling the audience in,” Newton says.

    Cole Sprouse Kathryn Newton resized

For Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”), playing the creature reanimated by Lisa was the role of a lifetime, even though it meant having to act beneath layers of prosthetic makeup that had to be applied for hours each day and portraying the character primarily through moans, grunts and gestures. “His inability to speak was what really excited me, just technically, and I knew it would be a heavy physical role,” Sprouse says. “For me, it was an attempt to reach some more universal physical language about how we perceive emotions through gesture, through movement, which was fun.”

    Beyond the Stereotypical

Liza Soberano joins the cast as Taffy, Lisa’s step-sister, bringing depth and complexity to what could have been a standard “mean popular girl” role. Cody ensures that each character, including Taffy, is multifaceted and dynamic, moving beyond clichés. “Taffy is my favorite character,” shares Cody. “She’s a beacon of positivity, and even when she’s unwittingly condescending or tone deaf, her intentions are always kind. She’s more protective of Lisa than anyone else in the film, other than the Creature. Lisa resents Taffy because she’s effortlessly beautiful and popular, but Lisa eventually comes to realize that her ire is misdirected. I felt that having Taffy be a standard ‘mean popular girl’ would be uninteresting. Most of the queen bees I’ve known were more complex than that.”

    Liza Soberano Kathryn Newton resized

“I had an instant connection with her,” says Filipina actress Liza Soberano (“My Ex and Whys,” “Alone/Together,” “Trese”) of Taffy, her first Hollywood film role. “She’s such a fun character to play.”

A Unique Blend of Horror, Comedy, and Romance

Directed by Zelda Williams and distributed by Universal Pictures International, “Lisa Frankenstein” is set to be the quirkiest undead horror romance of the year. Mark your calendars for February 7 and prepare for a Valentine’s Day filled with laughter, gore, and unexpected twists in this unique cinematic experience.

“Lisa Frankenstein” promises to be a delightful departure from the typical Valentine’s Day fare, offering audiences a blend of horror, comedy, and romance.
