Infused with the rich and comforting flavors of this festive dessert, the Bibingka Latte has quickly become a favorite for coffee lovers and foodies alike. Imagine the warmth of coconut, the subtle sweetness of rice, and a hint of butter—now imagine those flavors blended into a creamy, frothy latte.

But what makes this drink extra special is the touch of technology involved in its creation. Gemini, Google’s AI, helped refine the flavors and presentation, merging innovation with Filipino culinary heritage.

  • Finding Your Voice & Building Your Tribe: How Google spotlights LGBTQIA+ YouTube Creators Are Shaping a Safe Space in the Philippines

Finding Your Voice & Building Your Tribe: How Google spotlights LGBTQIA+ YouTube Creators Are Shaping a Safe Space in the Philippines

Every LGBTQIA+ person’s journey of self-discovery is unique, filled with vibrant moments and sometimes, tough challenges. In celebration of Pride Month, Google Philippines hosted an insightful discussion featuring inspiring LGBTQIA+ YouTube creators Roanne Carreon, Joshua Cruz, Jan Angelo Ong, and Yani Villarosa.

    1 Google Pride Conversations

The event, hosted by the multi-faceted creative and comedian Baus Rufo, highlighted the inspiring importance of self-discovery, building safe spaces, and finding your voice online of LGBTQIA+ YouTube creators Roanne Carreon, Joshua Cruz, Jan Angelo Ong, and Yani Villarosa.

“Finding your queer identity is a never-ending process. Even if you’re out and seem like you have it all figured out, you’re still building that equation for your truth, and your authenticity. That’s why communities and representation matter because you need them to constantly be shown that these are the many possibilities that you have access to [as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community],” Baus Rufo said.

Finding Your Truth: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Building Safe Spaces

Coming out and embracing your sexual orientation and gender identity can be a rollercoaster ride for many LGBTQIA+ individuals. It’s a personal process, and there’s no pressure to have it all figured out right away. With the rise of platforms like YouTube, it’s now easier to find content that showcases different facets of LGBTQIA+ lives and their experiences in discovering their identity offering valuable insights and a sense of belonging.

2 Baus Rufo Icoy Rapadas Roanne Carreon

“No one is pressuring you to come out, only do it when you’re ready. If you’re still figuring things out, you can Google resources to educate yourself and also find YouTube creators that resonate with your queer journey,” Joshua Cruz said. The lifestyle creator also admitted that they didn’t need to come out because of their supportive family. Joshua is paying it forward by being supportive of their viewers’ LGBTQIA+ journey, encouraging them to express themselves freely.

Yani Villarosa said it’s also important for influential creators like herself to remind her social media followers to slow down. “Social media can be so fast-paced that people feel the need to broadcast everything. When they see others coming out, they might feel that they have to match their pace. It’s really important to tell them to slow down, especially if they look up to you.”

Despite the belief that the Philippines welcomes LGBTQIA+ members , many queer Filipinos struggle to express their true selves out of fear of discrimination and prejudice from loved ones. The lack of support could also make it hard to explore their sexuality and gender identity, which is why they turn to LGBTQIA+ creators and communities where they can meet like-minded people with similar experiences.

3 Josh Cruz and Jan Angelo Ong

For Roanne Carreon, who is one-half of YouTube channel Roanne and Tina and co-founder of Queer Safe Spaces (QSS), it’s about providing support and representation, especially to young LGBTQIA+ members. “Growing up, we didn’t have role models, representation, and resources to educate people about LGBTQIA+ members. That’s why we do what we do: We wanted to create a community that can become a support system for members, especially if they’re still navigating their sexuality. It started out small, and now, we’re over 17,000 strong and we formalized QSS as a nonprofit organization,” she said.

Roanne added that being authentic and vulnerable is crucial to build relatability with their audience. This is why she and her partner Tina Boado showcase the good and ugly of their relationship in order to normalize what a regular day looks like for a WLW (women-loving-women) couple. “Our channel is a mix of fun things we do as a couple and educational content. We also talk about our mental health struggles in our videos.”

    4 Yani Villarosa

Yani is also candid about showing the “messy” sides of being a bisexual woman, who initially wasn’t accepted by her family when she came out in senior high school. “I created a safe space, not only for myself, but also for my listeners by being vulnerable about my experiences as a queer woman. I’ve shown that you’re allowed to be confused and messy, and people realize that it’s all normal. They managed to find a community that helped them realize that they’re not alone in their struggle.”

This goes to show YouTube’s impact in helping LGBTQIA+ people in navigating their self-discovery, and also show them that they can achieve so much if they live their most authentic selves. “YouTube is that vehicle that allows for a safe space to let people dream,” Jan Angelo Ong said.

Allyship and kindness go a long way for LGBTQIA+

Rec•Create founder Allison Barretto, who is one of Jan’s closest allies, believes that being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ isn’t a difficult task. “It’s so easy to love people from the community and accept them as human. You just have to be a decent human being,” she said. “Start small, recognize your privilege, step up and show up for your LGBTQIA+ friends.”

    5 Google Pride Conversations

Icoy Rapadas, who is Roanne and Tina’s ally, echoed the sentiment of being kind to others. He also acknowledged the privilege of being a cisgender heterosexual man, admitting that he had to unlearn many things and educated himself to become a good ally. “I want to make sure that LGBTQIA+ people are comfortable around me, and to inform my straight friends that it’s not okay to say certain things about LGBTQIA+ people,” he said.

The LGBTQIA+ community needs allies who will celebrate their identity and lend a helping hand, even in the smallest ways, when they’re struggling. Whether they’re family, friends, or a colleague, they are the people who can help LGBTQIA+ people live happily and confidently.

“You don’t have to go the extra mile to help LGBTQIA+ members, but it wouldn’t kill anyone to be informed,” said Bryan Larosa, Joshua’s best friend and ally. “Learn how to respect each and every one regardless of their gender and preference. I think that’s the most you can do.”

Google ends the year once again by releasing the Year In Search 2023, its annual compilation of the top trending keywords and terms that Filipinos search for.

These top 10 lists serve as a record of the many events and issues that people have gotten caught up in over the year. After years of being cooped up in our homes, many of us have been and continue to be bitten by the travel bug. We’ve come across social media posts of beautiful destinations waiting to be explored—but the question is, how are we going to have a memorable or unique experience?

    Google Bard

Well, you’ve got one less problem with Bard, Google’s AI bot and your new travel buddy. From drafting a simple message to answering complex questions, Bard’s got you and your important travel tasks covered. Its availability in more than 40 languages and over 230 countries make it the perfect travel companion.

Bard can definitely help you spark unique ideas for your next trip. Let’s start by asking Bard, “Hi, Bard! Can you help me create an off-the-beaten path travel itinerary?” Here is Bard’s response:

    Do your research

The first step is to do your research on your chosen destination. Look for information on smaller towns, cultural festivals, villages, and natural attractions that are often overlooked by tourists. You can find this information in travel blogs, guidebooks, and social media groups.

    Talk to locals

Once you have a few ideas of places to visit, talk to locals to get their recommendations. They can tell you about hidden gems that are not well-known to tourists. You can find locals to talk to at your hotel, at restaurants, and on the street.

    Take a cooking class

Food is a mirror of a country’s culture. Get to know the place’s culture in a more personal way by learning how to cook or trying out their unique dishes.

    Be flexible

When traveling off the beaten path, it is important to be flexible with your itinerary. Things may not always go according to plan, and that is part of the adventure. Be prepared to change your plans if necessary, and enjoy the unexpected.

If you haven’t tried it out yet, now’s the best time to use Bard in your educational journey, personal adventures, and everything in between. Check it out for yourself here.

  • Google Doodle honors pioneer Filipina writer Paz Marquez-Benitez on her 129th birthday

On March 3, Google celebrates legendary Filipina writer Paz Marquez-Benitez on her 129th birthday with her very own Google Doodle, in honor of her pioneering work in literature.

    Paz Marquez Benitez Google Doodle

Marquez-Benitez, a renowned Filipino author, is famous for her work Dead Stars, the first-ever modern short story in English from the Philippines. The Doodle features an illustration of Marquez-Benitez set against a field of shining stars, calling back to the title of the short story.

Framed as a somber and melancholic love story of the engaged lawyer Alfredo Salazar and the young and charming Julia Salas, Dead Stars is a deeper allegory critical of the American occupation and its effect on local culture and social norms.

Marquez-Benitez would go on to become a popular writing professor at the University of the Philippines until her retirement in 1951. Her work and tutelage at UP encouraged and inspired many other highly regarded writers over the decades. On top of this, she also founded what is now the Philippine Women’s University, advancing the cause of women’s education in the country.

“Google Philippines is proud to honor an important figure in Philippine literature, Paz Marquez-Benitez. Our rich literary heritage would definitely not be the same today without Marquez-Benitez’s impactful contributions, not only with her creations, but also with her valuable mentorship of a long line of writers in the country,” said Mervin Wenke, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Google Philippines.

You can view the Doodle on March 3 by visiting google.com, as well as http://www.google.com/doodles/paz-marquez-benitezs-129th-birthday.

  • Keeping children safer online with Google

Most of the world is now online, even children. While access to the internet is beneficial for a child’s growth and development, it is not without risks–bad actors prey on the internet and children may unwittingly access age-inappropriate content.

Google, in its mission to promote digital responsibility and internet safety, has a slew of simple tools and solutions that provide parents an easy way to protect their children online. Here are some of these:

Keeping children safer online with Google
Be Internet Awesome. Google and PLDT Home launched a partnership to teach more kids in the Philippines how to be safer and more responsible online.

    Family Link

Family Link is a parental controls app that allows parents to manage their child’s account and data settings. By linking the devices the children are using, parents can set screen timeouts, keep track of their digital activity, help change or reset their passwords if they forget it, guide them towards age-appropriate content, edit their personal information, or even delete their account if they feel it necessary.

    Be Internet Awesome

Be Internet Awesome is a program and a portal that teaches children the importance of digital responsibility. Through its interactive games, downloadable modules, and an online show, parents, educators, and kids learn how to be smart, alert, brave, kind, and strong online.

Lessons include sharing responsibly, being kind online, recognizing red flags and scams, securing personal information and privacy, and communicating their online concerns with a trusted adult.

    YouTube Kids

As its name suggests, YouTube Kids, is the kid-friendly version of the video sharing platform. It uses a mix of automated filters built by YouTube’s engineering teams, human reviews, and feedback from parents so only age-appropriate content will be available for viewing.

    Supervised Experience on YouTube

For families with teens and tweens, YouTube Kids may be too young for their growing minds. This is why YouTube introduced the supervised experience. The feature allows young viewers to watch content from the regular app–YouTube and YouTube Music–but under parental supervision and control.

With a supervised account, parents select a content setting that limits the videos and music children under 13 can find and play. Supervised accounts also change the features they can use, the default account settings, and the ads they see.

    Google Play Kids

The Google Play Store is host to millions and millions of apps from around the world and it can be hard to find apps that are not only fun but also educational for growing children. This is why the Play Store introduced the Kids category that presents a curated selection of teacher-approved apps for various age groups.

Here, children can learn a new language, early math skills, and play games that are appropriate for their age.

    SafeSearch

SafeSearch is a setting you can toggle on and off using your Google account. It helps you filter explicit content from your Google Search results. Explicit results include sexually explicit content like pornography, violence, and gore.

This is helpful for parents who want to keep their children’s searches safe while allowing them to explore the breadth of content available online.

Go to safety.google to know more on how you can be safer and more secure online.

  • Google celebrates Regatta de Zamboanga and its colorful vintas with a special Doodle

Every October, thousands of people gather along the kilometer-long stretch of R.T. Lim Boulevard in Zamboanga City to watch hundreds of vintas and their colorful sails race across the coastline. The event is the highlight of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival honoring its patron saint, the La Virgen Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza.

1 Regatta de Zamboanga Final Doodle Large

The racers are mostly Bajau fishermen who come from coastal villages like Sinunuc, Maasin, Labuan, Mariki, and the island of Santa Cruz.  Each boat carries two people paddling towards victory.

Also known as lepa-lepa or sakayan, the vintas are traditional outrigger boats with vibrant, rectangular sails. The intricate patterns on the canvas—designed by the racers themselves—symbolize the identities, customs and aspirations of the region’s diverse ethnic groups.

Although the regatta is a friendly competition in celebration of the fishermen’s maritime skills, everyone is motivated to be one of the winning teams to take home a prize.

  • Google celebrates how tech is making a difference for the LGBTQ+ community

In the third edition of the annual Pride Conversations event, Google powered a live social media discussion on how tech is making a difference in the lives of the LGBTQ+ community by celebrating their inspiring stories, promoting allyship, and building safe spaces.

Tech as a catalyst for cultural change

Among the panelists is Cebuana trans pinay beauty queen and model Maki Gingoyon, co-founder of MyTransgenderDate.com, a dating site for transgender women. According to Maki, creating a safe dating space for trans women is what inspired her to bring the dating site to life.

    Pride Conversations 2022
(L-R, from first row) Google’s Jolly Estaris, First Circle’s Cristina del Rosario, PageUp’s Mark Lacsamana, Ticket2Me’s Darwin Mariano, MyTransgenderDate.com’s Maki Gingoyon, XSplit’s Samantha Rose Cruz, and Miss Trans Global 2020 Mela Habijan gather and share inspiring stories for the third installment of Google’s Pride Conversations.

“Trans women venture on online dating sites hoping to find a partner who could accept us for who we are, who could love us for who we are. However, the sad reality of transgender dating sites back then was very, very discouraging–transwomen were presented as merely sexual objects,” she said.

Maki also believes that through this platform, she and her co-founder can stop the stigma on transgender relationships and promote accepting love in all its forms.

In the same light, telling stories with hopeful endings is what Darwin Mariano brings to the table as a producer and founder of ticket solutions platform Ticket2Me. Together with director Jade Castro and writer Danice Mae Sison, they created the popular Boys Love series, Boys Lockdown(2020), a story about two boys who connect while living under strict lockdowns due to the pandemic.

“Many of the LGBTQ+ stories told during my time were dark–they died of AIDS, heartbroken, or abused. That’s why we created Boys Lockdown–we want to make stories where young [LGBTQ+] people can see that they can have their own kilig love stories,” Darwin said.

Darwin also saw how platforms like YouTube are invaluable in telling those stories to the world.

“As producers, we really want to tell these stories but the challenge is monetizing and supporting these content with a business model that keeps you producing. This is where a platform like Google’s YouTube is important–it allows us to extend the life of the content when we upload it to our YouTube channel,” he added.

    Building safe spaces in tech

There may be safe spaces in tech but the reality is that it took–and takes–a lot of effort to get there.

For Jolly Estaris, Video and Media Sales Lead at Google Philippines, creating safe spaces within their companies is important to give more visibility to the LGBTQ+ community in tech–this is why in 2018 he set up a group called Pride@Tech that includes Pride members & allies from the local tech community. He is also proud of how Google celebrates LGBTQ+ at the workplace through its long-term programs, policies, and benefits.

“Within Google, there are a number of helpful resources and SOGIE101 training that help educate Googlers about the LGBTQ+ community and allyship,” shared Jolly. “We are also empowered to set our preferred pronouns in our work profiles which is important to foster respect among each other. Small things like that really help in creating a more inclusive work environment.”

Similarly, Samantha Rose Cruz agrees that It’s in simple things like respecting one’s preferred pronouns and gender identity that we can move towards LGBTQ+ equality, and this is something that she is working on as a product designer for live streaming platform XSplit.

“Being part of the community has helped me develop empathy and see my work through other people’s eyes and address the diverse needs of our users and build a product for everyone,” she said.

Some of the ways she is doing that is by designing forms that do away with referring to other gender orientations as “others”. Instead, she consciously puts a text box where people can write their gender identity.

Being people who have often been discriminated against, this has led the community to be more emphatic and understanding not only in addressing the needs of their members but also people from all walks of life.

“For the LGBTQ+ people who are working in tech, we are actually the ones sitting there and understanding what can be dangerous for people because that’s the reality we have to face: which of the things we make can create great things and which ones can cause harm. We’re searchlights, we can see in the dark, that’s our superpower,” Mark Lacsamana, UI Design Lead at PageUp, an enterprise talent management platform.

The same is true for Cristina del Rosario, Head of Design at the fintech company First Circle, who ensures that all of her designs are universal and usable for other communities often overlooked in tech and design.

“How can I design a product that works wonderfully? For everybody, including people who might be colorblind or people with low literacy or people who have never used a smartphone before? And so being part of the LGBTQ+ community, helps me understand other communities and pushes me to design better products,” she explained.

Miss Mela Habijan, the first ever Miss Trans Global 2020 and now a beacon of light for LGBTQ+, also shared how tech has helped find her space and voice when the world once told her that she is “not enough” just because she was born biologically male.

“Sabi ng mundo, kapag LGBTQIA+ ka, wala kang karapatan mangarap. Kaya akala ko, wala akong puwang sa mundo para lumago, maging buo, lalong higit maging ako. Little did I know, I would meet three fairy godmothers along the way: social media, digital world, and tech,” shared Mela.

“Ninang tech became my space of freedom and empowerment, while Ninang digital world was an open-minded platform which did not judge me as different. Instead, Ninang digital world saw my being trans and my being LGBTQIA+ as a leverage of potential. And finally, Ninang social media–she is a democratic arena that allowed me to seize opportunities for me to believe in myself: that I can be my best, that I can be talented.”

  • Inspiring Filipina content creators share how they break the bias online and beyond on Women’s Month

As a concluding celebration for Women’s Month, YouTube will be holding a virtual gathering of inspiring Filipina content creators to celebrate their stories of breaking the bias online and beyond. The free public event will be streamed live on March 30, 2022, 8:00 PM via Google’s YouTube and Facebook pages, hosted by artist and television host Nikki Gil-Albert.

Inspiring Filipina content creators share how they break the bias online and beyond this Women's Month

Explaining the wisdom behind the event’s local theme #AskHerFirst, Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario shares: “We believe that in order for us #BreakTheBias, one of the steps we have to take is to #AskHerFirst. Through this, we emphasize the value of asking women first–as a sign of respect and acknowledgment and to stop assumptions and preconceived notions. The simple habit of asking, rather than assuming, can lead more women to realizing their full potential and succeeding in what they choose to do.”

Staying true to its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, YouTube gathers a range of Filipina content creators from across walks of life who will tackle the different struggles women experience because of gender-based biases. They will also share how the recognition of women’s abilities and capabilities can help them succeed and make a difference in the community.

Joining the discussion are Maranao-Muslim digital creator and filmmaker Egypa Balindong; beauty vlogger and body positivity champion Helen On Fleek; entrepreneur, mentor, and PWD advocate Jozelle Tech; and work-from-home businesswoman and momfluencer Rookie Mommy PH.
