MOVIE REVIEW: The Rome of ‘Gladiator II’ is just an allegory for America in crisis

24 years after the first film, ‘Gladiator II’ follows the story of the son of the protagonist of the first film played by Russell Crowe, who was sent away to save his life from those who wish to kill him as he is sole heir to the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius after Marcus Aurelius has passed on. Sixteen years after the death of the emperor, twin brothers have taken rule, Geta and Caracalla, and they do so with debauchery, violence, and corruption. Hidden away in the African city of Numidia, Lucius Verus Aurelius, now called Hanno, lives a peaceful life with his wife. But the emperor twins have spread Rome’s influence and they have sent their general Acacius to take Numidia. During the siege, Hanno loses his wife and is taken as a slave where he is bought by the gladiator stable owner Macrinus. Macrinus sees Hanno’s potential due to his rage and uses him as a weapon against Rome while all Hanno wants is revenge against Acacius. What Hanno doesn’t know is that his mother, Lucilla is now married to Acacius and is secretly plotting to overthrow the emperor twins and return Rome to its former glory.

It’s a huge complicated plot with so many moving parts and yet, none of it feels terribly important. The whole film’s story runs through in less than a week and most of the big ideas about Rome and righteousness are left as lines of dialogue and never really given their due. Instead, the camera is focused on the brutality of this era of Rome and the debauchery of its rulers and the complacency of its senate. It speaks of ideals that never really takes a concrete form in any scene. They are all just stories the characters tell each other before they have to fight again in the arena.

Paul Mescal plays Lucius and Pedro Pascal plays Marcus Acacius in Gladiator II from Paramount Pictures.

It’s the fight scenes that director Ridley Scott really takes his time to put together. The siege of Numidia has a rhythm and an imagery that’s just enjoyable to watch on the big screen. It’s the epic, historical war scenes that can ignite the imaginations of those who love these big spectacles of violence. And then he pares it down in the arena but since he’s already done that in the first movie, he spices things up this time with a gladiator riding a rhinoceros and a naval battle, which is recorded fact. Yes, they used to fill the Coliseum with water and reenact naval battles for entertainment. Of course, Scott had to put it here.

Funnily enough, I found no lasting joy in any of it. This is a world that is suffering from imperial forces the way Numidia suffered at the start of ‘Gladiator II.’ This a world that is rife with war and people dying for some stupid notion of other governments and to see it on screen in this manner, regardless of any sort of historical authenticity felt very strange to me, a person living in a developing country whose nation is constantly in the crossfires of larger countries own ambitions. The film talks about the “dream of Rome” that is supposed to be a beacon of civility and a way forward but not at all cognizant that this is the same rhetoric that the United States have used to attack Middle Eastern states in the name of world order. The emperor twins became an obvious symbolism of the decadent reign of that countries former president, who is returning to the seat of power and the film is a call to bring him down. It’s hard to find empathy with the big concepts the film tries to juggle, especially when it seems more inclined to find joy in the brutality of the film’s title.

Denzel Washington plays Macrinus, Pedro Pascal plays General Acacius and Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla in Gladiator II from Paramount Pictures.

It doesn’t help that Hanno is not the most interesting of characters. Even with Paul Mescal at the helm, Hanno is written without any warmth or charm. After his wife dies, he embraces any chance at death (so he can be with her) but also revels in the violence to come because he’s promised by Macrinus that he’ll get a chance to go toe-to-toe with Acacius if he does well. That’s all there is to his character and it’s kind of hard to latch on to, especially when Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Acacius (Pedro Pascal) are talking about reinvigorating Rome’s classical ideals. When the film does try to redeem him by the third act, the script of David Scarpa has spent no time in preparing him for that shift. He has one moment with Acacius and then he dramatically becomes Lucius just like that.

    Gladiator II GL2 FF 023R
Denzel Washington plays Macrinus in Gladiator II from Paramount Pictures.

The only character that’s actually fun to watch is Denzel Washington’s Macrinus and Denzel obviously was having a lot of fun with him too. Washington plays the full range of Macrinus’ character, manipulating senators and even the emperor twins, luring Hanno into a partnership, and reveling in the character’s bisexuality; every move Washington does is fun to watch. And when he talks about why he wants Rome to fall, it actually makes more sense than any of the sanctimonious allegories the film makes with America’s own ideas of itself.

Sure, there are big fight scenes (not all of the same consistency) but some of the CGI effects are distracting (especially the sharks) while any attempt at making a rallying cry for “courage and honour” feels shallow or empty. This film feels like it came out ten years too late.

  • Ridley Scott Praises Paul Mescal as a Sympathetic Actor in “Gladiator II” – In Cinemas December 4!

Ridley Scott Praises Paul Mescal as a Sympathetic Actor in “Gladiator II” – In Cinemas December 4!

Visionary director Ridley Scott has long been known for his ability to cast actors who leave indelible marks on audiences. For Gladiator II, the stakes were higher than ever. How do you follow up the Oscar-winning original? Enter Paul Mescal, the breakout star from Normal People, who Scott describes as “a very sound, solid, sympathetic actor.”

    Gladiator II Paul Mescal 2

Scott first noticed Mescal for his quiet intensity and likened him to acting greats like Richard Harris and Albert Finney. “He seemed a very sound, solid, and sympathetic actor. As this story in the script started to evolve, I kept thinking about him. I knew that he was a very good theater actor, which to me is a plus. Theater actors keep me honest. I tend to be very visual and move like lightning. They like to know about the story and the characters between each take.”

    A Star in the Making

Playing Lucius, the son of Maximus (Russell Crowe’s iconic character from the original), Mescal had to balance emotional depth with physical ferocity. Producer Douglas Wick says the decision to cast him was a “leap of faith.” Mescal’s transformation from the sensitive lead of Normal People to a commanding gladiator wasn’t an obvious choice. But as Wick notes, “That meant we either had to find a new star or make one. It was an incredible risk on a big movie to choose an actor who’s never carried one. And our protagonist also had to be credible as an action hero. Ridley, the producers and the studio all held hands with Mescal and jumped off a cliff. We would soon discover that Paul is one of those once-in-a-generation talents who always lands on his feet.”

    From Rugby to Rome

Mescal’s athletic background was another asset. Producer Lucy Fisher recalls how they asked Mescal if he had any sports experience. His answer? Irish rugby, a sport demanding grit and resilience. “were all wowed by Paul’s talent.” But they first had to check one very important thing: if Mescal played any physical sport that could help him with his journey of becoming a gladiator for the film. “We had to sheepishly ask if he had ever played any sports, hoping to see a sign that he could play a gladiator,” Fisher recalls. “When he replied ‘Irish rugby,’ which we know demands toughness and more than a little lunacy, we knew we had our man. Some might say it was a gamble, but Paul has such wisdom and depth as an actor and such clarity as a human being that it never felt like a risk. Plus, the camera loves him, as did everyone who worked with him.”

    Rigorous Preparation

Transforming into Lucius wasn’t just about looking the part. Mescal dove into intensive training with Tim Blakeley of Media Physiques, perfecting swordsmanship and enduring grueling workouts. Mescal describes the preparation as pivotal: “There were all kinds of practical elements,” he says. “I was going to the gym, weight training, running, eating a certain way, all of these things. The training was something I could grab onto with both hands during prep. Ridley’s only interest is the talent for which he hired us. You’ve got to just step into it.”

    Gladiator II Paul Mescal

    A Career-Defining Role

At just 28, Mescal’s resume is already dazzling: an Olivier Award for A Streetcar Named Desire and an Oscar nomination for Aftersun. But starring in a Ridley Scott epic? “pinch-me moment.” “Ridley Scott’s a king in cinema and especially this genre,” the actor says. “When Ridley comes knocking, you just say yes. It’s definitely been a career highlight for me to watch the way the master’s brain works. And he was incredibly generous about sharing his knowledge and talent with me.”

As Mescal reflects on the legacy of Gladiator, he acknowledges the gravity of the role: “It holds a huge amount of weight for a vast number of people across the world. And the scale of it is huge. It’s not like any other role I’ve played. Going from independent features to a blockbuster studio picture was intimidating until I realized that acting is acting is acting, regardless of the context.”

  • Building Rome Again: Ridley Scott and Team Recreate Ancient Splendor in “Gladiator II”

Building Rome Again: Ridley Scott and Team Recreate Ancient Splendor in “Gladiator II”

Legendary director Ridley Scott is bringing audiences back to the heart of ancient Rome with Gladiator II, his most ambitious project yet. Collaborating with long-time production designer Arthur Max, this sequel promises a cinematic experience of epic proportions. The dynamic duo, who previously partnered on Gladiator, The Martian, American Gangster, and Napoleon, have outdone themselves, crafting a spectacle that redefines scale and authenticity.

    Gladiator II Colosseum

    “Gladiator on Steroids”

“Everything is much bigger and more elaborate than anything we’ve done before,” says Max, who oversaw the design and build of ancient Rome for the movie. “It’s Gladiator on steroids. Ridley’s approach to making a film is always immersive. He’s involved in every phase, every department. It can be a challenge working with him, because he expects so much. And I love a challenge.”

The sequel’s massive scope took production across Morocco, Malta, and Shepperton Studios in London. Producer Lucy Fisher describes the enormity:

“The scope was overwhelming. In Morocco, there were over 80-something huge tents dedicated just for the extras’ hair and makeup, and to house countless props and costumes. In Malta, we assembled the Arena, the palace and whole blocks of ancient Rome. There was a life size statue of Pedro Pascal on his horse. In a world of green screen and AI, this might be the last great build in movies. And we all felt privileged as we walked the streets of this lost world.”

    A Set to Rival History

Spanning nearly eight kilometers, the recreated ancient city is brimming with meticulous details. Max’s designs combine traditional craftsmanship with advanced technology, creating a visually stunning Rome. From an enlarged replica of the Colosseum to a grand city entry arch adorned with Romulus and Remus motifs, the artistry behind the sets rivals that of historical Rome itself.

One jaw-dropping element is the Colosseum set. Built at one-third the height and spanning about a quarter of the original structure, its foundation was elevated to allow for scenes involving water. “We knew we had to fill it with water,” says Max. “So we raised the foundation up about five feet so we could still see what we wanted above the water line when we flooded it digitally. We also enlarged the entry arch, so we could bring the ships in through the gates. We gave it a little bit of a boost from the bottom up, but you will recognize it when you watch the film.”

    Gladiator II

    The Magic of Multitudes

Bringing Rome to life meant assembling over 500 extras to crowd the Colosseum—a number augmented digitally for the amphitheater’s grand scenes. Scott’s signature filming techniques, including simultaneous action and multi-camera setups (up to 12 cameras per scene), ensured that the chaos of ancient Rome felt authentic.

Each scene, he says, is directed like a play, with simultaneous action taking place all over the set. “You have to know exactly where to place the cameras,” explains the director. “I can do that because I’ve storyboarded it all in advance. For even the best camera operator it can be hell. I don’t rehearse with the actors, but I do rehearse with the camera operators, and I dress them in costume on the set because they could end up in a scene.”

    Gladiator II

    A Must-Watch Event

With unparalleled attention to detail and a dedication to practical effects, Gladiator II may mark the last great cinematic build of its kind. Witness the grandeur when it premieres in cinemas on December 4.

  • Meet the Characters Shaping Rome’s Fate in “Gladiator II”, in Cinemas December 4

Meet the Characters Shaping Rome’s Fate in “Gladiator II”, in Cinemas December 4

Director Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II is set to reignite the grandeur of ancient Rome with an explosive continuation of the saga. Slated for release on December 4, the highly anticipated sequel shifts the narrative from Maximus’ story to that of a new hero, Lucius, portrayed by Paul Mescal.

    Gladiator II Paul Mescal
Paul Mescal is Lucius in Gladiator II.

Paul Mescal as Lucius: A New Kind of Gladiator

Screenwriter David Scarpa reveals that Lucius’ story is a stark contrast to Maximus’. “Maximus started as a leader in the Roman military who is facing off with an army of barbarians. Lucius is a barbarian defending his home from the invading Romans. Maximus was loyal to the emperor. Lucius hates Rome and everything to do with it. And yet both end up forced to kill or be killed for the amusement of the mob.” Scarpa shares.

Lucius, now a grown man, faces a life-changing ordeal when the Roman army invades his homeland in Numidia. Paul Mescal describes his character as a man driven by rage and vengeance:

“He is taken prisoner and dragged into Rome. He has an intense anger towards everything Roman that will grow as the film progresses,” Mescal says about his character. “When he enters the arena for the first time, he sees Acacius [Pedro Pascal], the general who led the siege of his city. He sees him sitting there with his wife and he vows to himself to kill them or be killed.”

Pedro Pascal as Acacius: A General Torn Between Duty and Love

Pedro Pascal, who plays the conflicted Roman general Acacius, brings depth to a character navigating loyalty, love, and survival. “You have to pay attention to the where and why of his allegiances,” the actor says. “Because he is leading the Roman army, you’ll think he’s a villain. But Acacius loves Lucilla, a beloved character from the first movie. So, then he’s a good guy. And the movie plays those tricks on us continually.”

    Gladiator II Connie Nielsen
Connie Nielsen is back as Lucilla in Gladiator II.

Connie Nielsen as Lucilla: The Survivor’s Dilemma

Fifteen years after the events of the original Gladiator, Lucilla remains one of Rome’s most formidable figures. Connie Nielsen reflects on her character’s resilience:

“Lucilla has had to be a survivor all of her life,” Nielsen says. “She immediately understood what the death of her brother meant for her and those she cares about. When this movie begins, she’s been through 15 years of upheaval and countless pretenders to the throne.”

As political tides shift, Lucilla must navigate the chaos unleashed by Rome’s new emperors—Geta and Caracalla.

Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger as The Twin Emperors: Chaos on the Throne

Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger step into the roles of Geta and Caracalla, historical figures infamous for their shared rule and volatile reign. Scott describes them, “They are already a bit insane when we meet them,” he adds. “Their father succeeded Commodus, and they inherited the throne. They ran Rome a little off the rails. What better way to surpass the dastardly legacy of Commodus than to double down on the malevolence?”

    Gladiator II Denzel Washington 1
Denzel Washington is Macrinus in Gladiator II.

Denzel Washington as Macrinus: Power at Any Cost

Two-time Oscar® winner Denzel Washington portrays Macrinus, a shrewd businessman-turned-kingmaker whose thirst for power knows no bounds. Ridley Scott hints at Macrinus’ shadowy rise:

“I think Macrinus was probably a soldier from North Africa who arrived in Rome as a young man,” says director Ridley Scott. “He worked his way up to being a major supplier of food and other goods to the armies and turned that into an empire of steel foundries, shields, swords, and spears.”

Washington adds, “And power is an addictive drug. Once you have it, you can’t live without it. Once he had a taste for taking, he had to have more. He doesn’t really care about anyone. He uses them. If people can’t make him more powerful, he has no interest in them.”

    Gladiator II Derek Jacobi
Derek Jacobi is back as Senator Gracchus in Gladiator II.

Derek Jacobi as Gracchus: A Voice of Courage

Veteran actor Derek Jacobi reprises his role as the loyal senator Gracchus. A trusted ally to Lucilla, Gracchus remains steadfast in his principles, even as Rome teeters on the edge of chaos.

Jacobi reveals, “He hasn’t changed much at all. He still loves a bit of adventure. He’s a great character — a brave man who is eager to test fate and welcomes a challenge.”

    A Legacy of Excellence

The sequel also brings Ridley Scott’s signature attention to detail and grandeur. From the vibrant chaos of Numidia to the blood-soaked Colosseum, Gladiator II promises a spectacle unlike any other.

Filmmakers Reflect on the Journey Behind “Gladiator II,” in Cinemas December 4

Fans of Gladiator can finally rejoice as the highly-anticipated sequel, Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, roars into cinemas on December 4. Ever since the first film’s legendary success in 2000, whispers of a sequel have echoed through Hollywood. According to Scott, “The popularity of Gladiator just kept growing. The film stayed in the public’s mind. I knew we should consider a sequel, but it took years to figure out what the story was going to be.”

Gladiator II Connie Nielsen Joseph Quinn

Bringing Back the World of Ancient Rome

Producer Michael Pruss, who has worked closely with Scott for over a decade, reveals, “The world of the Roman Empire and the unforgettable characters of Gladiator were so brilliantly crafted. Recreating that on an even grander scale [for the sequel] was a necessity. We wanted that same powerful motivation for revenge but something that was also fresh and modern and unique. It took longer than anybody anticipated, but great ideas and human drama take time to craft. Hopefully the results here speak for themselves.” This fresh twist involves a new lead character, Lucius, portrayed by rising star Paul Mescal, who plays the part of an embittered exile determined to confront his past.

A New Journey with Lucius – The Lost Prince

Producer Lucy Fisher, who has been part of the Gladiator II journey since 2001, felt that a strong story was crucial. “It took a long time to get a story that we thought would be worthy of being a sequel to Gladiator. But once we grabbed onto the character of Lucius [played by Paul Mescal] as an angry young man, exiled and abandoned, and committed to destroying the city that had both made and betrayed him, our story began to unfold. Lucius would be a lost prince, wanting to be anywhere but Rome, and yet all roads would lead him there.” Fisher explains.

    Creating Epic New Thrills

Reprising the grand combat scenes that made the original a spectacle is a formidable task, notes producer Douglas Wick. “The audience has seen grand combat many times over and their thirst for MORE was unquenchable. Whatever we created had to provide captivating new thrills. A true spectacle for the ages.”

In 2021, Scott teamed up with screenwriter David Scarpa, known for All the Money in the World. Together, they brought a new layer of intensity to the Colosseum, where battle has become even more brutal and audiences more bloodthirsty. Roman emperors Caracalla and Geta (portrayed by Fred Hechinger and Joseph Quinn) heighten the sense of tyranny, pushing the empire to new depths of cruelty and spectacle.

“I knew and loved the original,” says Scarpa. “When Ridley approached me, I was extremely excited. Gladiator is such an esteemed classic and a touchstone for historical action films. I was both honored and a little apprehensive about working with the people who created that world. Ridley has a very strong directorial voice, and his vision is central to the movie.”

Ridley Scott’s Timeless Take on the Empire

For Scott, Gladiator II is about more than Rome. “This film is about the Roman Empire, obviously,” he says. “But it’s also about the way humanity never learns its lesson. We keep repeating history again and again and again.”

“Gladiator II” First Reactions Hail it as an ‘Epic Roman Opera,’ in Cinemas on December 4

Get ready for a cinematic spectacle! The much-anticipated sequel to the 2000 classic Gladiator is set to hit Philippine cinemas on December 4, and early reactions are already buzzing with excitement. Could this be his year? Director Ridley Scott, nominated thrice for a Best Director Academy Award, shares a light moment on the Gladiator II set with Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal.

    What’s the Buzz All About?

During an early screening in Los Angeles, Gladiator II has received glowing feedback, with many calling it one of Ridley Scott’s best works in recent years. The story continues from where the original left off, focusing on Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), the young boy we last saw in the Colosseum, now a man driven by vengeance. With an all-star cast that includes Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger, the film promises high-octane action, epic battles, and deep emotional moments.

Critic Erik Anderson from AwardsWatch couldn’t hold back his enthusiasm, tweeting, “GLADIATOR II is a true epic and Ridley Scott’s best in years. Paul Mescal is a great action star without sacrificing his indie grit, a worthy heir to the throne. Denzel Washington EATS every line and costume without ever overplaying,”

Other critics are praising the film’s powerful visuals and riveting action sequences. Jillian Chilingerian from Offscreen Central said, “Ridley Scott places you in the action of the arena centered on legacy and honor amping up the blood, battles, and biceps for something so deliciously cinematic and Machiavellian. Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, & Joseph Quinn certified movie stars… it’s one of the few modern blockbusters that actually looks GOOD visually.”

Griffin Schiller of FilmSpeak raved, “Ridley Scott returns to the Colosseum to prove to the world that HE’S. STILL. GOT. IT. Absolutely BUZZING after #GladiatorII! An EPIC shakespearean tale of hope, futility & power w/in a crumbling system. Denzel FEASTS in a showstopping, Machiavellian performance. What a picture!”

A Glorious Return to Ancient Rome

The plot of Gladiator II centers around Lucius Verus, who, after witnessing the fall of his hero Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the original), must now face the Colosseum himself. His journey is one of honor, revenge, and the desire to restore the glory of Rome to its people. Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla, Lucius’ mother, bringing continuity from the original film.

Pedro Pascal, who plays Roman general Marcus Acacius, shared his excitement for the film, describing it as “It’s grand in scope, with sophisticated characters and storytelling,” says Pedro Pascal, “It’s all the things that fill in the word ‘epic.’”

Denzel Washington, who portrays Macrinus, one of the central figures in the film, has been lauded for his commanding performance. Washington himself said, “This is the biggest film I’ve been on,” raves Denzel Washington, “Cecil B. DeMille [The Ten Commandments, Cleopatra] on steroids.”

    Ridley Scott’s Vision Shines Again

It’s been over two decades since Gladiator first hit the screens and left audiences in awe with its sweeping battle scenes and powerful story of a fallen general’s revenge. Now, Ridley Scott returns to the world of ancient Rome with a sequel that critics are already calling a masterpiece.

Scott’s dedication to authenticity and cinematic grandeur is evident in the early reactions. Andrew Salazar from Discussing Film said, “Ridley Scott’s direction is unhinged, framing this as an epic Roman opera. The visuals get the job done.” And We Live Entertainment’s Scott Menzel noted, “Gladiator II is Ridley Scott’s best film since The Martian. A big, bloody and bad ass action spectacle that builds upon the legacy of the original. The film showcases beautiful set pieces and a lot of epic battles. Paul Mescal shines. Denzel Washington chews up the scenery quite a bit here and looks like he is having the time of his life here.”

Atom, a movie review outlet, couldn’t contain their excitement in their post: “EPIC MASTERPIECE!! Emotional with huge, STUNNING action. Ridley Scott’s perfect crescendo. Paul & Pedro deliver the goods. A sweeping, arousing saga that fists your a**e. Not just another sequel, it’s the BEST movie ever! A fitting end setting up what’s next.”

The Featurette: Behind the Scenes with Ridley Scott and Cast

As the buzz for Gladiator II grows, fans can dive deeper into the making of the film through a new featurette. In the video, director Ridley Scott and the cast discuss the immense effort behind bringing ancient Rome back to life on the big screen.

“There’s an excitement coming back to the Roman Empire,” says Scott, reflecting on his return to the world he first created in 2000’s Gladiator. He adds, “The scale of this film is enormous, but it’s the characters that will capture the hearts of the audience.”

Paul Mescal, who steps into the leading role as Lucius, acknowledges the gravity of the film. “It’s not lost on me what we as a cast of actors and Ridley are stepping into,” he says, fully aware of the pressure to live up to the legacy of the original.

Meanwhile, Connie Nielsen, the only returning cast member from the first film, shares her awe at stepping into the Colosseum once again. “To walk out in that arena for the second time was pretty amazing,” she said, adding to the anticipation for her character’s return.

    Gladiator II Denzel Washington
Critics seem to have had as much fun watching Denzel Washington as the actor had playing the role of Macrinus in Gladiator II, which some have predicted will give him his third Oscar win.

    A Blockbuster in the Making

With its grand set pieces, powerful performances, and a narrative steeped in honor, revenge, and legacy, Gladiator II is poised to be one of the year’s biggest blockbusters. Fans of the original film are already counting down the days until its December 4 release in the Philippines.
