  • Warner Asserts Box-Office Dominance with Back-to-Back Hits ‘The Batman,’ ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’

“The Batman” shattered records in March.  Then, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” scored a magical $193.4-M over the weekend, worldwide.  And just like that, Warner Bros. Pictures is enjoying its best box-office season in years, with no signs of slowing down.

While receipts for the latest “Fantastic Beasts” movie are still coming in, Warner is celebrating the triumph of “The Batman” which has flown past $750-M at the global box office.  The film has maintained its top spot as the highest-grossing film of the year, both in the U.S. and worldwide.

Earning widespread praise from critics and audiences alike, director Matt Reeves’s powerful new vision of the globally iconic DC Super Hero has taken in $365 million in U.S. receipts and $386 million internationally, and is still going strong.

In the Philippines, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” likewise opened at No.1 for the two-day April 16-17 frame, capturing a market share of 63%. Together with “The Batman” which is still playing in local theaters, Warner is dominating the market with an over-all 68% share for the same period.

“We couldn’t have started the year better,” said Francis Soliven, General Manager of Warner Bros. Philippines. “`The Batman’ and the new `Fantastic Beasts’ are consecutive blockbusters for Warner this early in 2022, and we owe it to the local moviegoers who, despite the challenges, have trooped back to the theaters.”

For the rest of 2022, Warner is betting on Baz Luhrmann’s epic musical “Elvis,” the animated superhero comedy “DC League of Super-Pets,” the horror-thriller “Salem’s Lot,” the psychological thriller “Don’t Worry, Darling” and the superhero tentpoles “Black Adam” and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods.”

  • Heavily plot-driven, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ is an exclusive cinematic experience made just for fans

As I sat in my seat in the special screening of ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’, while surrounded by excited fans in their house robes and carrying wands, I came to the realisation that, while it had only been four years since the release of the previous film ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,’ I didn’t have any recollection about the earlier film at all.

Of course, I remember that Eddie Redmayne played Newt Scamander and that it was a period film in the Harry Potter universe. But none of the plotlines of the previous film had stuck with me except those of Queenie (played by Alison Sudol). Queenie was the only character that had left an imprint on me in the whole series.

I couldn’t remember what the crimes of Grindelwald were and what all of this had to do with the fantastic beasts. I had hoped that the opening of the film would help me catch up to the events of the last film but instead, it opens in medias res with Albus Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) having tea with Grindelwald (played by Mads Mikkelsen) talking about things I wasn’t sure of and a revelation that we were all aware of (though the audience around me still reacted as if it was new information).

And then it goes to the opening credits and a rather dark scene (was the scene just unbelievably dark or does the SM Aura Premiere theater need to clean its lens?) of Newt observing another one of the fantastic beasts.

A lot of plot happens before we shift to Jacob (played by Dan Fogler) and his life without Queenie. We are introduced to a new character, Lally (played by Jessica Hicks), and then we are thrust into the main plot of the film.

The movie plays out like this throughout its 142-minute runtime. Reintroduces us to old characters (Ezra Miller as Credence, Callum Turner as Theseus) while opening a new plotline involving Grindelwald as some rising name in the wizarding world for his populist views of eradicating the non-magical humans (called muggles) as they pose a threat to the wizarding world.

There’s an election that’s happening and in the middle of it, Dumbledore sends Newt and his friends to a quest to stop Grindelwald from swaying the public to take his war seriously.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Review

‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ is a movie that is all plot. Our heroes are sent on a quest and it’s one challenge after the other while Grindelwald gathers his forces and Dumbledore has his own little side adventures to follow. The movie jumps from Newt and Theseus to Jacob, then Grindelwald, and then to Credence, and then to Queenie in such a flurry of story that it doesn’t quite feel cohesive or whole.

There are lots of magical moments in the film that make you wonder why exactly is Grindelwald so afraid of the muggles? When wizards can do such amazing things with a wave of their wand, what chance do ordinary beings have against them? Never does the film ever take the time to impress upon us the danger of Grindelwald’s philosophy. The stakes are made to feel big – Dumbledore and other characters say it all the time – but never does the film ever show us what exactly those stakes are.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Review

And this is my biggest issue with this film. While the fans around me were ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the mention of a character’s name or a mystical effect a character does or an antic made by one of the cute fantastic beasts of Newt, the film never feels grounded in anything tangible or concrete. There’s imagery used to compare Grindelwald to any bigoted populist president in contemporary society – a fantastical Hitler, so to speak – but there’s no danger present in the scenes other than the dangerous rhetoric.

Albus is merely good because he is against Grindelwald, but there’s no real scene that ever shows us his goodness. Newt’s moral center has been established in the earlier films but he undergoes no internal struggle that allows me to invest in his character.

The only real character whose internal struggle feels developed and whole in the movie is of Queenie but she has to share her screen time with all the other characters and the busyness of the plot.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Review

From the way the audience was reacting, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ comes off to me as an exclusive cinematic event that caters only to fans and those invested in the lore. As someone with no real attachments to the franchise, it was incredibly difficult to feel included in this journey. While it had a lot to say about populist statements that lead to bigotry and war, it never makes any of it feel palpable or real. Instead, it is more dead set on highlighting how magical the wizarding world is.

But they’ve already done that in the Harry Potter series. What else do they have to offer?

  • Film Facts: 5 Things to Know About ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’

This Saturday, April 16, fans can finally return to the Wizarding World with the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore! In the third film of the franchise, Albus Dumbledore seeks the help of Magizoologist Newt Scamander in leading a team of witches, wizards, and one muggle to stop Gellert Grindelwald from seizing control of the world of magic.

While we’re all waiting to see their epic battles on the big screen, we’ve rounded up five facts about the film and its main characters. Check them out below:

    1. J.K. Rowling spent 3 hours sharing Dumbledore’s secrets with Jude Law.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Dumbledore actor Jude Law recalled how the author of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises shared with him everything about the character.

“I think one of the beautiful moments in preparation was working with J.K. Rowling. I spent an afternoon when she gave me the entire history of this great character. I remember she went in and she was having tea. She had these incredible heels on. She said ‘OK, if you don’t mind I’m going to stand up.’ And she stood up for nearly three hours and just walked up and down, talked, talked — and it just came out, it’s just living in her,” the actor said.

    2. A different Grindelwald in each film.

In case you didn’t know, Mads Mikkelsen takes over the role of Grindelwald in the latest ‘Fantastic Beasts’ film, after Johnny Depp had to depart from the franchise. This was due to Depp losing a legal battle involving a British tabloid and the controversy surrounding his marriage with Amber Heard. This is not the first time that Grindelwald switched actors though. The first film from the franchise featured Colin Farrell as Grindelwald, before his real face–Depp’s face– was revealed near its ending.

    3. Bathilda Bagshot’s connection with Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Harry Potter fans would recall Bathilda Bagshot as the author of A History of Magic, who was murdered and used by Voldemort as the host for his pet snake Nagini in order to deceive Harry. Besides being a respected historian, Bathilda also played a huge part in the crossing of Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s paths. After being impressed with Albus’s paper in Transfiguration, Bathilda became acquainted with the Dumbledores. She then introduced Albus to her equally talented great-nephew, Gellert Grindelwald. Friendship will come naturally to the two afterward.

    4. Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s complicated relationship.

For the uninitiated, this may come as a surprise, but it’s been known since 2007 that Albus Dumbledore is gay, after author J.K. Rowling revealed it to fans of the Harry Potter franchise. In fact, Dumbledore and Grindelwald were former lovers, but the latter’s descent into darkness prompted a falling out between the two. While this was only subtly shown in the films so far, it might just be further explored in the third title from the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

    5. Luna Lovegood and Newt Scamander’s grandchild married.

Another fun fact that overlaps between the Harry Potter franchise and the Fantastic Beasts franchise is that Newt Scamander’s grandson, Rolf Scamander, married the fan-favorite Luna Lovegood. While the Harry Potter films sparked romance between Luna and Neville Longbottom, the books didn’t really confirm a romantic relationship between the two characters. While not much information was really revealed about Rolf, Luna’s love for magical creatures, which also led her to a career in Magizoology, is most likely what brought her and Rolf Scamander together.

  • Eddie Redmayne Answers Call of the Wild in the New ‘Fantastic Beasts’

Reprising the role of Magizoologist Newt Scamander, Oscar Best Actor winner Eddie Redmayne returns in the epic fantasy adventure “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the newest adventure in the Wizarding World™ created by J.K. Rowling.  The film opens in cinemas across the Philippines on Saturday, April 16.

In the film, Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world.  Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers.  But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

    Eddie Redmayne Fantastic Beasts

“I was thrilled that we finally get to see Newt where he’s at his best and happiest—out in the wild, tracking beasts,” Eddie Redmayne states.  “One of the things I’ve always loved about Newt is the seeming anomaly between his physicality, mixed with his slight social awkwardness, and his facility and dexterity when he’s in the field.  I’d been appealing to David Yates to show more of that.”

    Eddie Redmayne Fantastic Beasts

Director David Yates attests, “Eddie is a transformative actor who loves to dive deep into every aspect of his character.  He was excited about showing Newt’s anthropological skill set, trekking through the jungle to find the beautiful, mysterious Qilin (pronounced as “chillin.”)  We’ve never seen Newt in the wild before, and it makes for a fun way to open our journey with him in this particular story.”

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” continues the series’ tradition of crossing new borders in the wizarding world.  The adventure circles the globe—from China to Great Britain, from New York to Germany, and from the Austrian Alps to Bhutan.  The movie also takes audiences back to the beloved Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the nearby village of Hogsmeade.

     Eddie Redmayne Fantastic Beasts

Redmayne says that the juxtaposition of the wizarding and non-magical world “has always appealed to me—this idea that alongside the world we’re living in, brushing shoulders with us through that wall, is another entire universe that is one of magic and adventure.  It ignites that sense of childlike wonder that anything could be possible.  And to see that unfold in other countries beyond the UK has been astounding.”

  • Discover the Past of Hogwarts’ Headmaster in ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” is a magical adventure that sends a team of unlikely heroes, led by Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), on a mission that could spell their only chance to save both the wizarding and non-magical worlds.  Each has a role to play in this covert operation devised by the ultimate wizarding mastermind: Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law).

Dumbledore has been one of the most revered figures in the Wizarding World canon since he was first introduced some 20-plus years ago.  However, the beloved wizard of the Harry Potter books and movies has an intriguing history that is unveiled in the third film in the “Fantastic Beasts” series.

Jude Law, who returns to the role of the wizard destined to be Headmaster at Hogwarts, reveals, “What I enjoyed the most was the opportunity to unpeel more of Dumbledore’s past.  There were hints of it in the last film, but here we are able to delve into his connection with Gellert Grindelwald as young men and the point at which it started to break.  Albus had once shared with Grindelwald quite extreme views about Muggles, which he worked out himself as being wrong and backed away.  But he lives with that dark secret and the fallout from their relationship.”

    rev 1 FB3 TRLR 0088

Portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen, Gellert Grindelwald had been a wanted man due to his radical beliefs and violent tactics.  Now, the powerful Dark wizard has emerged from the shadows, ready to implement his plot to gain control of the entire wizarding world and wage all-out war on the Muggles.  This time, however, he is not operating outside the law but within the system while twisting it to his own ends, which makes him all-the-more dangerous.

Dumbledore is the one wizard with the power to thwart Grindelwald’s ambitions, but there remains a physical manifestation of their previous relationship that stops him.  Law explains, “The blood oath is the embodiment of the bond between Gellert and Albus, one made through youthful passion and belief.  Even though their lives have taken very different directions, they are still connected in this stalemate, which, from Albus’s point of view, is hugely frustrating.”

    rev 1 FB3 TRLR 0057

Ever the chess master, Dumbledore formulates a plan that involves his friend and former student, Newt Scamander, joining forces with a small band of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle.  Yates observes, “Dumbledore has a checkered history of encouraging people to do crazy things, but we love him for that, nonetheless.”

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Heyday Films Production, a David Yates film, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” in Philippine theaters Black Saturday, April 16.  The film will be distributed worldwide in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures.
