It’s been almost two years since the release of season two of The Mandalorian and so much has happened since then. A range of other Star Wars shows have premiered on Disney+ but I never caught up. I did enjoy ‘The Mandalorian’ though so being able to see the first two episodes quickly reminded me what I love most about the show. Even with all the time that passed, it’s important to note that the only two characters you really have to remember are The Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his ward, Grogu. Their relationship is the heart of the show and that’s all you need to know. What I also love about ‘The Mandalorian’ is how showrunner Jon Favreau sticks to the space western genre.
Westerns are not just about cowboys and Native Americans. It’s the frontier lands and it’s about the beginnings of civilization. Away from the big cities, in the wild, wild west, might makes right and the law is just an abstract thing. What Favreau does is to take the essential thematic elements of a western and infuse it into the narrative structure of ‘The Mandalorian.’ He does this with terrific effect. It’s one part commentary on the fringes of society, far away from the eyes of authority but it’s also a fun adventure into the unknown reaches of the Star Wars universe.

By the start of the third season, we discover that Grogu has decided to stay with Din Djarin (which apparently is a choice that was made in an episode of ‘The Book of Bobba Fett,’ which I did not see) and are now on a task to redeem Din Djarin in the eyes of The Mandalorians, as he has broken from the Creed when he took off his helmet last season. Despite the show being about the frontier lands of the Star Wars universe, outside the reach of The New Republic, and the people at the fringes of this galactic society, the first two episodes of the third season seem to be exploring the roots of Mandalorian culture and the importance of the Creed, their way of life.
There is a profound existentialism that is being teased in the first two episodes as Din Djarin is determined to rejoin his people by bathing in the waters of an underground lake in his homeworld. On the flip side, Bo Katan (Katee Sackhoff) joins the cast and contrasts Din Djarin’s faith by being cynical about the Mandalorian code. As a royal who saw Mandalore at its greatness (before its ruin), she is disillusioned and cynical. These two forces are at full display in the first two episodes and signal an interesting philosophical debate that may unfold during this whole season.

After all, the first two seasons have been about exploring the world of the show and how lawlessness looks in this universe. Now, the show goes deeper and looks inwards into the beliefs that give these characters a sense of purpose. Now, the mantra the Mandalorians always recite – “This is the way” – holds much more weight. It’s become a promise of what’s to come in this season and I’m all for it.
The show is moving at a very quick pace. The first episode seems inconsequential, a random trip that leads to no real story event other than to revisit some old characters, but quickly we arrive at Mandalore by the second episode and what transpires there is a figurative renewal of faith for the two characters in opposition. By the end of the second episode, I still don’t know where this show is moving towards but it feels so much bigger than before, as if it is alluding to something grand and I’m all for it.

What makes ‘The Mandalorian’ so enjoyable is the free-and-easy storytelling and the dynamic characters. It’s a fun show that prefers to show us in broad strokes a world that is outside the reach of authority. There’s a lot of humanity tucked away in the images of pirates and mercenaries. Now that Din Djarin and Grogu’s relationship is secured, it is time to broaden that world and, at the same time, deepen it and if it moves along its steady pace as earlier seasons, then we are in for another fun ride.

The past two seasons have garnered critical acclaim and are enjoyed by new and long-time Star Wars fans alike. As the New Republic struggles to keep the peace together, The Mandalorian must meet with old allies and face new enemies while he and Grogu explore the galaxy.
Before the new season starts, here are some things you need to know to get up to speed.
The story so far
The first season of The Mandalorian begins with the story of the titular character (Din Djarin), a space bounty hunter who takes on contracts to kill or capture targets. He is tasked to hunt down The Child/Grogu, a mysterious youngling. Upon meeting The Child, The Mandalorian decides to go on the run and not honor the contract. This leads to a journey that becomes a fight for survival as they try to take down The Client, the man responsible for putting up the contract.
This ends with them making an enemy out of Moff Gideon, who was a part of the Galactic Empire that once ruled the galaxy. The Mandalorian and the Child then formed a new clan as they set off on a journey to learn more about the latter’s true origins.
In the second season, Grogu is abducted by the enemy. This leads to a dramatic rescue and a fight between Din Djarin and Moff Gideon, which ends with Djarin getting a weapon called the Darksaber and saving Grogu. The end of the second season saw Grogu wanting to train to become a Jedi. He then bids Din Djarin goodbye in an emotional farewell.
Grogu’s origin and powers
Grogu is one of the show’s biggest stars. We learned more about his abilities and origin story in the second season. His name was revealed by Ahsoka Tano, along with his past as a Jedi in training. We also see Grogu become more comfortable using his powers and abilities, even helping Din Djarin during fights. They include telepathy, telekinesis, healing wounds, calming beasts, and even masking his own abilities to protect himself.
While the second season shared more information about Grogu’s origins, the mystery of who rescued him when he was younger remains.
Who will claim the Darksaber?
A legendary weapon from Din Djarin’s home planet of Mandalore, its holder can claim the right to rule the planet. Realizing the power that this weapon holds, he has the choice to stake his claim. However, Bo-Katan, one of his trusted allies, is Mandalore’s rightful heir and needs the Darksaber
New adventures await Din Djarin and Grogu in The Mandalorian Season 3, catch them on Disney+ on March 1, 2023.
This year, Disney+celebrated the 17-year career of the K-pop group Super Junior by releasing the documentary Super Junior: The Last Man Standing which chronicles the rise of the South Korean boy band and how it heralded the great Hallyu wave around the world, brought by the popularity of South Korean performers.
During a recent press conference for the documentary, Super Junior’s leader Leeteuk and main vocalist Ryeowook talked about their journey through the seventeen years since the group debuted back on November 6, 2005. Check out some highlights of their Q&A with the Asian press below:
What does the title ‘The Last Man Standing’ mean for you?
Ryeowook: “The Last Man Standing” is part of the lyrics of our song Superman. I felt this from 10 years ago, that we will be the last man standing, so I do feel the responsibility and pressure to show our junior idol groups how to strive forward so I really want to work hard.
Leeteuk: I heard that the winner is the last man who smiles, so in 10 years’ time [or] 20 years’ time, I still want to say that Super Junior is going to be the last man standing.

As a trailblazer in K-pop, how does it feel?
Leeteuk: I do feel a lot of pressure these days. Because we’ve come a long way, I think our junior idol groups will also try to work harder and longer. Because our documentary is so well-made, maybe the other idol groups will also love to have their documentaries.
Super Junior has remained for 17 years now, what do you think makes Super Junior the “Last Man Standing”?
Ryeowook: We never took breaks. Some of us enlisted in the army but even when some of us were in the army, the group didn’t cease to work and have new albums, so I think that’s one of the powers that we have.
Leeteuk: We weren’t trying to let go of anything, but what we did was try the hardest at every moment and I think those days piled up to be 17 years of time.
Photo: Super Junior: The Last Man Standing trailer
What do you think sets this documentary apart from the other documentaries that Super Junior had been a part of?
Ryeowook: There’s a lot of footage of when we were young, when we’re literally babies, so I think those rare footages and videos will be taken as really fun and enjoyable to our old and new fans.
If you could go back to November 6, 2005, what would you say to yourself?
Ryeowook: I would say that you are going to be the best so don’t be afraid, because when I was watching the documentary I felt like I was quite afraid when I was young so I couldn’t even really introduce myself so I wanna say that to my younger self.
Leeteuk: So if you watch the documentary, I think it was the first album jacket shoot and the reporter says ‘Hello, what’s your name?’ and Ryeowook says hello, then she said her name and he says ‘I’m the youngest in the group’, and she says, ‘Name?’ and he says ‘Ryeowook’.
Ryeowook: I was really nervous at the time.
Leeteuk: If I were to go back to 17 years ago, I would tell myself that you’re doing great, because there are things that I could fix, but at the time that was the best I could give. Sometimes I do want to go back, but I know I really tried my best.
