The newest DC superhero team is coming to the big screen this week! The new animated film DC League of Super-Pets brings together a ragtag team of heroic animals from the DC universe, voiced by an all-star ensemble!
Watch the trailer for DC League of Super-Pets below:
The film follows Superman’s reliable superpowered pet, Super-Dog who fights crimes alongside him in Metropolis. But when Superman and the Justice League are kidnapped, it is up to Krypto and a group of shelter animals– Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle, and Chip the squirrel– to master their newfound powers, rescue the heroes, and ultimately save the day!
If you can’t wait to see the superhero film land on the big screen this week, then here’s a list for you! We’ve rounded up some interesting facts about the movie that you might want to know about!
1. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson currently headlines two DC films.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson leads the pack as the voice of Krypto the Super-Dog in DC League of Super-Pets. But Johnson is also joining DC’s movie universe as the anti-hero Black Adamin his own titular film. Unlike the friendly white hound, Black Adam is a DC character you wouldn’t want to mess with, because he uses his Shazam-like superpowers to uphold his twisted sense of justice.

2. It’s the Rock and Kevin Hart’s third film as onscreen buddies.
In the past, Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart have already shown their chemistry in the films Central Intelligence, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Jumanji: The Next Level. In Central Intelligence, Johnson played the bullied-kid-turned-CIA-rogue-agent Robbie while Hart played a high school star athlete who ended up dissatisfied in his office job. Johnson and Hart also played the in-game characters Bravestone and Finbar respectively in the Jumanji films. Hart also made a cameo in Johnson’s Fast & Furious spinoff film Hobbs & Shaw.

3. Ace and Krypto debuted in the comics in 1955.
Krypto first appeared in Adventure Comics #210 in March 0f 1955. Krypto was the dog of Superman/Kal-El’s family in Krypton. When Kal-El’s father Jor-El was testing a prototype of the rocket that would bring his son to Earth, he first used their dog Krypto. However, on its trip to Earth, Krypto’s rocket went off course and only landed on Earth when Kal-El, now Clark Kent, was already a teenager. When they reunited, Krypto turned out to have the same powers Superman has, and it soon became a crimefighting companion for the superhero.
Meanwhile, Ace debuted a few months later in Batman #92, where it was introduced as a German Shepherd with a star-shaped marking on its forehead. When its master, John Wilker was kidnapped, Batman used Ace to locate and rescue its owner. When Wilker no longer had time to take care of Ace, the dog was left in the care of Batman and Robin, assisting them as the Bat-Hound in their fight against criminals.

4. All the Super-Pets aside from PB actually exist in the comics.
While Krypto and Ace have always been popular pet sidekicks of DC’s biggest heroes, the film’s Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel actually exist in the comics as well. Merton the turtle, or Merton McSnurtle, debuted in DC’s Funny Stuff #1 where it became the speedster Terrific Whatzit in a world of anthropomorphic animals. Meanwhile, Chip or Ch’p in the comics is not a sidekick but an actual member of the Green Lantern Corps. As for PB the Pot-bellied Pig, she was created for this film to become Wonder Woman’s animal counterpart.

5. Keanu Reeves debuts as the Batman.
Whenever a new Batman comes to the big screen, fans are sure to look forward to the actor behind it. Despite being an animated film, DC League of Super-Pets made sure that there will be an A-lister actor behind his voice, casting Keanu Reeves for the role.
In an interview with Extra, Reeves also shared that he is open to the possibility of playing an older, live-action Batman. “It’s always been a … it’s been a dream,” the actor said. “Pattinson’s got Batman right now, and he’s doing awesome. Maybe down the road. Maybe when they need an older Batman.”
DC League of Super-Petsopens in cinemas nationwide this Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Book your seats in advance and buy your tickets here.
In “DC League of Super-Pets,” Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack—Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel—to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the Super Heroes.
In addition to bringing together some of the DC Universe’s biggest names, the film boasts a huge casting coup as well, with the one and only Dwayne Johnson as Krypto, together again with Kevin Hart as Ace—no dynamic duo plays off each other better and who but Johnson and Hart banter with such a biting wit?
Johnson, who also serves as a producer on the film under his Seven Bucks banner, observes, “When you think about the conceit of what this is, about the pets of these Super Heroes, and the fact it has never been done before in cinema history!? That is pretty remarkable, considering the genre of superheroes films as a whole. What kind of pets would your favorite DC Super-Heroes have, from Superman to Wonder Woman to Batman to Flash to Green Lantern? So, when I first heard the idea, I was in without hesitation, 100%. And when you think about the players—from Warner Bros. to DC, and the love that we at [our production company] Seven Bucks Productions have for the superhero genre and for animation as well—we jumped at the partnership and the opportunity.”

Hart’s Ace is the de facto leader of the shelter pack. The actor was drawn to the story right away, noting, “It’s a big movie with big characters. I feel like there are so many moments throughout the script where the verbiage on the page popped, and they put the right people into those positions and the material just blows you away—they did a great job casting. That’s what you want on a movie like this—to be part of an amazing ensemble that feels special. You really feel, ‘Hey, we got something here.’”
The ensemble that the filmmakers assembled to voice the four-legged reluctant heroes and delightfully villainous baddies featured in the film include Vanessa Bayer as potbellied pig PB, Diego Luna as scaredy squirrel Chip, Natasha Lyonne as vision-impaired turtle Merton, Kate McKinnon as evil genius guinea pig Lulu, with Lulu’s main mutant guinea pig recruits, Keith and Mark, voiced by Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz.

For the film’s two-legged heroes, John Krasinski voices Krypto’s bestie and Metropolis’s own Clark Kent, aka Superman, and Olivia Wilde is the voice of his sweetheart, Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. The Justice League members seen and heard in the film are Batman, voiced by Keanu Reeves; Wonder Woman, by Jameela Jamil; Aquaman, by Jemaine Clement; The Flash by John Early; Green Lantern by Dascha Polanco; and Cyborg by Daveed Diggs.
“In an animated movie, the most important thing is that the actor’s voice is the perfect voice for the character, but we got lucky that they also happened to be huge movie stars,” director Jared Stern smiles.

Amidst all the high-flying action and adventure, the film also touches on the importance of friendship and family—and emphasizes that anyone’s real superpower, no matter how many legs you stand on, is being true to yourself.

He’s here to electrify this mission. Diego Luna (Andor, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is Chip in Warner Bros. Pictures’ animated action adventure “DC League of Super-Pets.”

Chip is content to spend his days within the sleepy confines of Metropolis’s Tailhuggers animal shelter, terrified by life and thankful for the safety of a cold, steel cage. But when his beloved sanctuary is suddenly under attack, this scaredy squirrel suddenly gets the power to shoot lightning out of his paws! Now the reluctant hero must overcome his fears—and find the will to power up—in order to help save the Justice League.

The leader of the shelter pack, ACE is a sarcastic hound who’s spent most of his life in a Metropolis animal shelter planning his escape. Strong and seemingly invulnerable, he employs a tough guy attitude that masks his soft underbelly. Ace may act like he’s fine flying solo, but he’ll join the others in battle if it means not only saving the Justice League but getting Krypto to lead them all to greener pastures.

Metropolis Super-Dog Krypto prides himself on being Superman’s superpowered best friend—he can fly and has X-Ray vision, heat vision, “freeze” breath and super hearing, just like his two-legged Kryptonian counterpart. But the mutts down at the dog park aren’t feeling his whole vibe. The dude has tons of powers and zero chill. When his bestie and the rest of the Justice League need his help, Krypto mysteriously finds himself stripped of his otherworldly abilities. To save Supes, Krypto will have to learn to be a normal dog, with some help from a motley crew of shelter pets newly infused with powers of their own. To save the world, he’ll have to get his nose dirty. Literally.
