    MOVIE REVIEW: Crime 101

There’s something slick and glossy about writer-director Bart Layton’s adaptation of Don Winslow’s novella Crime 101. From its opening shot of Los Angeles at night, with all the city lights and cars on the 101 freeway, yet upside down, with the sky beneath and the city right on top. It’s a gorgeous, disorienting shot that creates tension. A woman’s voice narrates the usual meditation spiel (or later revealed to be part of a yoga practice). The two elements – the upside-down city and the meditation – contrasts to create an interesting effect. It sets us up for the crime thriller Crime 101.

Crime 101 is an ensemble piece that follows three characters – Mike (Chris Hemsworth), Detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo), and Sharon (Halle Berry) – whose lives intersect through a crime. Mike is a thief who plans untraceable robberies of insured items and jewels. He strikes along the 101 Freeway while ensuring that no one gets hurt. He is methodical, cautious, and as a person, very lonely. Lou is a cop who comes across as someone who seems past his prime. He’s always unkempt, no one respects him anymore, and his theory about the robberies along the 101 Freeway goes unheeded in the force. Sharon works at an insurance company serving the wealthiest clientele. She’s a vice-president at the company, but her promotion to partner is impeded by the old boy’s network. Their worlds collide when issues in their personal lives force urgency putting Sharon in the crosshairs of Mike while Lou finally finds a clue that can lead him to Mike.

What’s exciting about Layton’s direction is how he takes his time to establish the world, allowing us to get to know these characters and painting a portrait of a society bereft of integrity and decency. Lou is looked down upon by the rest of the force because of his old-school ways and values. Through his perspective, we see the rot within the police force and their own corruption. Sharon becomes a victim of a patriarchal system that undervalues women and their place in the corporate hierarchy, as well as being witness to the vulgar value systems of the extremely wealthy. These two storylines are meant to serve as a contrast to Mike’s own sense of honour and code. His methods are precise and deliberate, ensuring that no one gets hurt and only insured items are taken, so in theory, no one is meant to suffer a great loss. But of course, we also see how the insurance companies, through Sharon, do their best to get away from paying their clients.

    Crime 101
Davis (Chris Hemsworth, right) and Lou (Mark Ruffalo, left) in CRIME 101

Layton uses clever editing techniques and vibrant mise-en-scene to link the three characters. A single motion from one character often cuts to another finishing the action, creating a semblance of inevitability. The film’s pace moves slowly to build the world and raise the stakes so that we sense that when these three collide, the impact will be explosive.

Urgency is amplified when Mike starts to lose his nerve and cancels a hit, which his fence (Nick Nolte) is not happy about. He hands over the assignment to a fiery, unpredictable biker (Barry Keoghan), who is later ordered to follow Mike and rob him after his next gig.

While this is happening, Mike meets Maya (Monica Barbero), who catches his eye and tries to start a relationship with her while Lou is separating from his wife (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The events fuel the narrative to an explosive 30-minute finale, where Mike makes his final score, and everything is on the line.

Honestly, this kind of movie might have worked better if it came out fifteen years ago. The Robin Hood angle of its protagonist no longer feels apt in our current global crisis of civilization decay. The narrative encourages us to cheer for Mike because he only targets the rich, to cheer for Lou because he’s a good cop, and to cheer for Sharon because she’s been treated unfairly and she deserves her flowers but at the heart of all this is a crime. We’re meant to excuse them because all the rich people in the film are despicable and I suppose we are to take a nuanced approach to the narrative but another wrong does not make it right.

Perhaps fifteen years ago, when the illusion of a civilized world meant we could fantasize about a Robin Hood-like character coming in to mess with the rich but that isn’t justice. And Crime 101 paints a world without justice, and it feels so bleak. I loved the performances, Layton’s direction, and the way he subtly critiques the overwhelming number of cars in Los Angeles and how unhealthy it is – bright lights constantly moving on the 101 freeway that all I could think about is the pollution and how unfriendly it is to commuters – but I came out of the theater feeling empty. I couldn’t cheer for these characters. The film moved me, but it didn’t give me the justice I had been hoping it would deliver.

Critics Applaud a Bold Reinvention of the Heist Thriller

Following its debut, Crime 101 has been met with enthusiastic acclaim from major publications, with critics highlighting its stylish direction and layered storytelling.

NPR commended the film’s fresh perspective on a familiar genre, writing:

“Bart Layton’s movie boasts a slate of top-notch stars and puts a nifty, self-conscious spin on the old-fashioned heist picture. Hopscotching through Los Angeles’ glamor and grit, the action centers on three solitary characters, each at a personal Rubicon.”

The Guardian praised Layton’s confident direction and kinetic energy, describing the film as:

“Layton does without the distinctive indirect mannerisms and meta-commentaries of his earlier movies, but he applies his pedal to the metal for what is an enjoyable and very stylish high-stakes armed robbery film about a thief who is highly controlled, super-cool, super-groomed, and naturally looking for the “walkaway money” of the time-honoured one last job.”

    HalleBerry ChrisHemsworth

Meanwhile, the Roger Ebert site awarded the film three and a half out of four stars, noting:

“This is a special movie. It has a life force unlike any other crime thriller I’ve seen. It’s about characters who suffer a personal failure but emerge transformed. It’s a violent movie, but not a cruel one, and unexpectedly moving by the end.”

With its gripping tension and emotional weight, Crime 101 is clearly striking a chord with audiences and critics alike.

Directed, written, and produced by Bart Layton, and based on Don Winslow’s acclaimed novella, Crime 101 is a tense, character-driven thriller powered by an exceptional cast: Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo. The film opens in Philippine cinemas on February 18.

    Casting the Perfect Trio

Pulling off a story this layered required more than big names — it demanded transformative performances.

Producer Eric Fellner, co-chair of Working Title Films, emphasized that while the cast boasts undeniable star power, it’s their craft that truly elevates the film.

“You can talk about them being a great cast in terms of their names, but they’re also phenomenal actors,” Fellner says. “Every single one of them brings their character into the world beautifully.”

The result is a gripping ensemble where every glance, every pause, and every decision carries weight.

    Watch the Trailer here:

Chris Hemsworth as Davis: Precision and Paranoia

Chris Hemsworth leads the charge as Davis, a meticulous jewel thief whose carefully constructed criminal empire has left him isolated and guarded. Focused on executing one final high-stakes job, Davis operates with icy control — but beneath the surface, cracks begin to show.

To build authenticity, Layton and producer Dimitri Doganis conducted interviews with real jewel thieves and the law enforcement officers who pursued them.

    Screenshot 2026 02 11 at 10.24.24 PM

“For us, that isn’t unusual. That is absolutely the standard place that one starts building a story. Real people, real experiences,” Doganis says. “Then you make sure that what you are doing really feels like it’s anchored in truth. I think that’s what we were always struggling for, even with something which is entirely invented. It has to plug into broader truths about who we are and how we live and what we want if it’s going to stay with people. Both jewel thieves and the policemen who chased them were really important sources to get certain details.”

Grounded in real-world insight, Davis emerges not just as a criminal mastermind, but as a man wrestling with the consequences of his own ambition.

Halle Berry as Sharon Coombs: A Career on the Brink

Standing at the emotional core of the film is Sharon Coombs, portrayed by Academy Award winner Halle Berry. A longtime insurance broker whose elite clients are directly impacted by the jewel thefts, Coombs finds herself confronting both professional frustration and personal reckoning.

At a pivotal crossroads, she questions the value placed on women at midlife — especially in high-pressure industries.

    Screenshot 2026 02 11 at 10.31.14 PM

“One of the reasons I was really attracted to this movie when Bart first talked to me was because I think it’s very poignant,” Berry says. “It speaks to who we are as women today, and women in midlife, and how we are often discarded and we are devalued. I’ve been on a tear to bring our second acts to the forefront, because so many of us have struggled in the workplace.”

Berry brings depth and vulnerability to Coombs, transforming her into more than collateral damage in a criminal saga. She becomes a force in her own right.

Off-camera, the experience proved equally meaningful.

“This is one of the best movie making experiences I’ve ever had, and that’s a lot to say when you’ve been doing this for 30 years,” Berry says. “But between Chris, Bart and Mark, I have never felt more cared for, more respected, more listened to, and more supported.”

Mark Ruffalo as Detective “Lou” Lubesnik: Justice at All Costs

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Detective “Lou” Lubesnik, played by Mark Ruffalo — a lawman driven by duty and an unshakable need to solve the case.

Obsessed with connecting the dots behind the jewel heists, Lubesnik edges closer to Davis with every new lead. Ruffalo worked closely with Layton to ensure the character’s moral dilemmas felt layered and real.

    Screenshot 2026 02 11 at 10.26.40 PM

“I was really excited about this when it came along,” Ruffalo says. “My talks with Bart were great. There was a lot of back and forth about the character and just how to punch out some of those moral themes to make the suspense better.”

Interestingly, Hemsworth points out that Davis and Lubesnik share unexpected similarities.

“We see Mark Ruffalo as someone who has never really been given his due or been taken seriously, as he deserves,” Hemsworth says. “There’s a slight self-sabotaging nature about the way the character operates. He’s kind of at that point in his life where he’s asking the question: is this as good as it gets? Have I run my course now or is there more to be had?”

Two men on different sides of the law — both questioning their legacy, both chasing something just out of reach.

    Suspense Anchored in Truth

What sets Crime 101 apart is its commitment to realism. Drawing from firsthand accounts of jewel thieves and investigators, the film crafts a suspenseful narrative that feels unsettlingly plausible.

As tensions rise and alliances shift, each character must confront hard truths about ambition, relevance, and consequence.

Sleek yet emotionally charged, Crime 101 delivers a powerful cinematic experience where every move matters — and every choice has a cost.

High stakes rule the game, and every move comes at a price. This February, moviegoers can brace themselves for a gripping, edge-of-your-seat cinematic experience as Crime 101 opens in Philippine cinemas on February 18.

Featuring a remarkable ensemble cast led by Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan, Crime 101 is adapted from Don Winslow’s celebrated novella and brought to life by writer-director Bart Layton. Stylish yet grounded, the film blends suspense, emotion, and character-driven storytelling into a powerful modern crime tale.

A City Built on Desire and Discontent

Known for exploring lives lived beyond society’s rules, Layton found a compelling backdrop for his latest project in Los Angeles—a city fueled by ambition and quiet desperation. In Crime 101 characters grapple with the need to prove their worth in a place where success is measured by what you own and how you appear.

“I felt like many of the characters are slightly trapped in that sense of ‘I’m never going to feel good about my place in the world unless I have this,’” Layton says. “L.A. is a place that really nurtures that sense of: if you want to really be somebody and feel like you are of value, you need to have all the external trappings of great success. I think status anxiety is a constant thing.”

That tension pulses throughout the film, shaping every decision and consequence.

    Watch the Trailer here:

A Heist on the Edge of Perfection

At the center of the story is Davis (Chris Hemsworth), a highly skilled and elusive jewel thief whose crimes trace the stretch of the 101 freeway. Known for his precision and restraint, Davis prepares for what could be the most lucrative—and dangerous—job of his career.

His path intersects with Sharon Coombs (Halle Berry), a weary insurance broker whose profession revolves around protecting the priceless assets of Los Angeles’ elite. Disillusioned and standing at a turning point in her life, Sharon becomes entangled in a situation that threatens to unravel everything.

Closing in is Detective Lou Lubesnik (Mark Ruffalo), an LAPD investigator deeply affected by the unsolved freeway robberies. As his pursuit intensifies, the lives of Davis, Sharon, and Lou become tightly bound, setting the stage for a tense and unpredictable showdown.

A Modern Film with Classic Crime Roots

Layton drew inspiration from timeless heist and crime films such as Out of Sight, Thief, The Sting, and The Thomas Crown Affair. These influences shape Crime 101 into a movie that balances suspense with depth.

“They were grownup movies,” he says. “They had real characters and were kind of tonally not simply a comedy, a drama or a thriller. They had light and shade. I definitely thought it would be nice to remind people that those are still great experiences to have in the cinema.”

The result is a sleek yet thoughtful thriller that respects the genre while offering something refreshingly grounded.

Chris Hemsworth’s Nostalgic Return to Crime Drama

Chris Hemsworth was immediately drawn to the project’s throwback sensibility.

“I read the script and loved it because it felt like a real throwback to ‘90s thrillers,” Hemsworth says. “There was a sort of nostalgia to the story that you don’t see too much these days. I was a fan of Bart’s work and loved American Animals. It was a very character-driven drama with elaborate intersecting storylines. After our first meeting I thought not only has he written an incredibly compelling script, but he also has a brilliant vision for the film.”

Already a fan of Layton’s American Animals, Hemsworth praised the script’s layered storytelling and the director’s clear creative vision, describing the film as a deeply engaging, character-first drama.

A Film Fueled by Passion and Precision

Veteran producer Eric Fellner believes Crime 101 stands out because of the dedication behind every frame.

“I found it inspiring how good everybody was in the film, and that goes from in front of the camera to behind it,” Fellner says. “There is unbelievable production design, cinematography, costume, hair and makeup, editing, music—just every aspect.”

For him, the ultimate reward is seeing audiences connect.

“When you’re making something, the hope from a producer is that audiences will lean in, emotionally engage, and at the end breathe out a huge sigh of joy and go: ‘Wow, that was great.’”
