Early Reactions Applaud the Film’s Massive Scale

The first wave of reactions has highlighted the extraordinary scale of Nolan’s latest production.

The Independent who writes, ““Nolan’s biggest film to date. This film has about triple the number of huge set pieces than any of Nolan’s previous films, and every single one of them is breathtaking in their own way. In The Odyssey, Nolan showcases visual trickery in a way you’ve never seen a few before. The only criticism I have, and it’s a good problem, is … you’re often left wanting more of each set piece, and it certainly goes your way into height of the re-watchability factor of the film. I also can’t quite remember a film having such a stacked cast, where everyone delivers. Special shouts out to Tom Holland in his best role to date with Telemachus, Himesh Patel … and Samantha Morton who damn well steals the show with the few scenes she’s in.”

The publication also praised the movie’s visual effects, impressive ensemble, and strong replay value. Tom Holland, who portrays Telemachus, received particular recognition, along with Himesh Patel and Samantha Morton.

Morton was singled out for making a striking impression despite appearing in only a limited number of scenes.

    TO Anne Mia

    Critics Praise the Star-Studded Cast

Variety also praises the film and the performance of the actors, writing, “I have seen Christopher Nolan’s #TheOdyssey, and it is an astonishing achievement. A triumphant, spectacular epic. The performances from Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o are genuinely grand. And for some, truly, the best performances of their career! … Christopher Nolan is a visionary, and #TheOdyssey is a work of art … The battle scenes, especially at Troy, are breathtaking. It’s an incredible epic.””

The outlet praised the performances of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o.

Several cast members were described as delivering some of the finest performances of their careers.

With its sweeping visuals and emotionally charged performances, the adaptation was praised as both a grand spectacle and an impressive work of art.

    A Powerful Big-Screen Experience

DigitalSpy takes note of the epic production scale of The Odyssey, writing, “The Odyssey is staggering. Packed with intense and spectacular set pieces, often backed by a soul-rattling score, it builds to a final act that’s as good as anything Nolan’s done. Purists might baulk at the adaptation changes, but as an experience, nobody is doing it like Nolan.”

    TO Matt Zendaya

Although fans familiar with Homer’s original poem may notice changes in the adaptation, the outlet praised Nolan’s ability to create a cinematic experience unlike anything else currently on the big screen.

That combination of scale, sound, and visual storytelling appears to be one of the film’s greatest strengths.

    The Legendary Journey of Odysseus

“The Odyssey” follows Odysseus as he attempts to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War.

His journey becomes a dangerous test of courage, endurance, and survival as he encounters numerous obstacles along the way.

Back in Ithaca, his wife, Penelope, is surrounded by aggressive suitors seeking to claim Odysseus’ kingdom and take his place.

Their son, Telemachus, remains with her as they hold on to the hope that Odysseus will eventually return.

Bringing together mythology, action, drama, and adventure, Nolan’s adaptation transforms the ancient story into a bold cinematic spectacle designed for the largest possible screen.

A story that has echoed across millennia is making its way to the biggest screen possible.

Christopher Nolan brings one of literature’s most legendary tales to cinemas with The Odyssey, a sweeping adaptation of the Greek epic shot across six countries: Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States. Opening in Philippine cinemas on July 15, the film gathers an extraordinary ensemble cast led by Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, and more.

As Nolan’s thirteenth feature film, The Odyssey marks what may be his most expansive cinematic undertaking yet.

“Your experience as a filmmaker informs the choices you make in a number of different ways, including what you feel prepared for, what you feel that you have the skill set for, and what will give you a new challenge but builds on what you’ve done before,” Nolan says. “The Odyssey is an incredible work that’s extremely important to the history of the world and development of culture, but it has never been adapted as a modern blockbuster. I was energized by the challenge of creating the mythic world of Ancient Greece and excited about telling its story, with all its rich themes, in a way I’d never seen.”

A Timeless Epic Reimagined for Modern Cinema

Believed to have originated around the 8th century BCE, The Odyssey is one of the most influential works in world literature. Passed down through generations of oral storytellers, the epic evolved through time while keeping its emotional core intact: a family separated by war, a kingdom in turmoil, and a hero fighting his way home.

At the heart of the story are two central figures. There is Odysseus of Ithaca, the king known for his cunning and for helping win the Trojan War through the legendary Trojan Horse. Then there is Telemachus, his son, who was only an infant when Odysseus left for Troy and has grown up wondering if his father is still alive.

Meanwhile, Penelope, Odysseus’ wife and Telemachus’ mother, must navigate the dangerous politics of Ithaca as suitors pressure her to remarry and place one of them on the throne.

It is a story of longing, survival, loyalty, and fate. Across oceans, palaces, battlefields, and mythic encounters, The Odyssey remains a powerful tale of what it means to find one’s way back home.

Christopher Nolan on the Epic’s Cinematic Power

For Nolan, adapting The Odyssey also meant recognizing just how deeply the epic has shaped storytelling on screen.

“Whether it’s the narrative through-line of Odysseus or the singular episodes that make the entirety of the epic, The Odyssey underpins almost all of cinema,” Nolan says. “It’s certainly there in every movie I’ve ever made, to a degree I never before realized. It was a fun thing to discover as I got into the work of adaptation.”

That realization helped fuel Nolan’s approach to the film, one that embraces the grand scale of ancient myth while delivering the immersive force of a modern blockbuster.

Practical Spectacle Meets Modern Visual Effects

Known for his love of practical filmmaking, real locations, and massive in-camera moments, Nolan brings that passion to The Odyssey in full force. The film combines live stunt work, practical effects, and sweeping real-world locations with modern visual effects to create a mythic world that feels both tangible and breathtaking.

“I’m a big fan of film history, particularly the silent era,” Nolan says. “Some of the attractions of cinema to audiences back then were things that also speak to audiences now. Extraordinary sets, extraordinary locations, a cast of thousands. Part of the appeal of those spectacles was that these effects were generated practically, with real sets, locations and scores of extras.”

Nolan adds that while visual effects have transformed what cinema can do, part of the wonder of older films came from seeing something real unfold before the camera.

“What has long interested me is the ability to combine those two things to create the most immersive and powerful experience possible. We can return to an older era of filmmaking, where ‘in-camera’ spectacle was everything for audiences. But we can also address the fantasy through the power of visual effects. For me, this synthesis was an appeal of the project. We are trying to do it all. Which seems totally appropriate for what the Odyssey is and needs to be on screen.”

    Odyssey Nolan3

A Hard Job Worthy of a Legendary Tale

Bringing one of the most important literary works of all time to life was never going to be simple. For Nolan, that challenge was part of the appeal.

“It was a hard job—as it should be. It’s The Odyssey.”

Epic in scale and timeless in emotion, The Odyssey begins its journey in Philippine cinemas on July 15.

  • Sneak Peek: Exclusive Photos from Christopher Nolan’s Latest Ambitious Film “Oppenheimer”

From the cinematic genius behind the Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception comes an ambitious new project that is set to captivate audiences worldwide.  Universal Pictures recently shared a collection of striking images from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, “Oppenheimer”, which is due to hit cinemas across the Philippines on July 19th. The captivating snapshots offer an intriguing glimpse into a narrative and characters that are poised to change the world as we know it.

“Oppenheimer” brings together a lineup of acting powerhouses, promising a film that is as star-studded as it is promising. The film boasts an ensemble cast that reads like a Hollywood roll call – Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., and Josh Hartnett. The newly released photos from Universal Pictures promise a visual spectacle that’s bound to leave viewers on the edge of their seats.

Oscar®-nominated writer-director Christopher Nolan brings to screen “Oppenheimer”, his most ambitious and urgent movie yet, a sweeping, epic thriller that delves deep into the psyche of a singular American mind: the brilliant scientist behind the world-shattering invention of the atomic bomb that represented the total sum of human ingenuity, an invention that would remake civilization, even as its very existence threatened the future of mankind.

Cillian Murphy stars as J Robert Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer – The Man Behind the Bomb

Audiences have witnessed the depth of Murphy’s talent in roles across “28 Days Later”, “A Quiet Place II”, “Peaky Blinders”, and previous Nolan ventures including “The Dark Knight Trilogy”, “Inception”, and “Dunkirk”. In “Oppenheimer”, he takes on the formidable task of portraying the physicist known as the Father of the Atomic Bomb. In Murphy’s own words, the challenge lies in embodying Oppenheimer’s immense intellect and moral quandaries, a pursuit of complexity befitting the multi-faceted man himself.

    Emily Blunt in OPPENHEIMER
    Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer

Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer – The Nonconformist

Known for her impressive turns in breakout role and scene-stealing performances in “Devil Wears Prada” and A Quiet Place (I and II), Emily Blunt embodies the role of Kitty Oppenheimer, a biologist, botanist, and J. Robert’s wife. Blunt found herself drawn to Kitty’s defiance against societal norms and her unwillingness to conform to traditional gender expectations, finding it refreshingly modern and relatable. “Kitty is a character who doesn’t do small talk; she only does big talk,” Blunt says. “She’s complicated, volatile, bewitching all at once. What I really was drawn to with her is that idea of a woman who refused to conform to the sort of feminine ideal of the time, why you need to get married and have children and support your man and that’s your job and that’s all you’re allowed. She just had this defiance against the system that felt so modern.”

Matt Damon and Cillian Murphy Oppenheimer

Matt Damon as Leslie Groves Jr. – Witness to History

To play the brigadier general, the filmmakers recruited Matt Damon, who earlier this year added to a gilded resume of Oscar® nominated performances (and an Academy Award® for co-writing Good Will Hunting) with an acclaimed performance in Air.  Groves, who played a crucial role in the creation of the atomic bomb, represents an origin story for a world shaped by the aftermath of the Manhattan Project, a narrative thread Damon found deeply compelling. “I’m a child of the Cold War,” Damon says. “I grew up with the consequences of this piece of history.  So, without a doubt, this is one of the most important stories of our time.”

    Robert Downey Jr in Oppenheimer
Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss

Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss – Nuclear Policy Architect

Lewis Strauss was a founding commissioner of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1947, playing a key role in shaping America’s post-war nuclear policy.  The Oppenheimer opportunity arrived in Downey Jr.’s life at a moment when he was trying to be choosy following his blockbuster run playing the foremost avenger of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I had been cooling my heels for about a year before the pandemic, just reacquainting myself with my family and other interests because I had been working super consistently,” says Downey Jr.  “But this was Christopher Nolan, doing something that was important to him. The cast was this large gathering of folks who have their choice of projects. And just as soon as we were under way, world events lined up in a way that turned this movie into an important metaphor that could speak to any number of things. So, it was kind of a no- brainer.”

Florence Pugh Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer
    Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock

Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock – The Free Spirit

An intellectual, deep-feeling introvert, sensual, free-spirited, yet prone to bouts of melancholy, Jean Tatlock was a Stanford-educated psychiatrist who had an intense yet tortured romance with J. Robert Oppenheimer.  To play Tatlock, the filmmakers cast Florence Pugh, whose performances in Black Widow, Midsommar and Little Women, which earned her an Oscar® nomination, have made her one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars. She took the part for the chance to work with a director she admired. “It’s a Christopher Nolan movie, number one,” says Pugh, “and number two, he has one of the most incredible leads. Cillian Murphy is an actor that I have been watching for quite some time and have been desperate to work with for ages. You’d have to be mad to say no. It felt like I was playing sports with some of the best athletes, so it was truly one of the best experiences that I’ve had.”

    Josh Hartnett in Oppenheimer 1
    Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence

Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence – The Unsung Hero

To play the physicist Lawrence, Nolan chose Josh Hartnett, no stranger to big films that tackle the morality of war and military heroics, having played an Army pilot in Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor and an Army ranger in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down.  Returning to movies after taking time off to focus on raising kids, Hartnett re-engages the genre that made him a star through a different kind of character. “I knew a bit about Oppenheimer, but not Lawrence and how he was instrumental in creating nuclear weapons and what is now our 21st century dilemma,” Hartnett says. “He’s the most important and impressive historical figure from the 20th Century that I knew nothing about. He developed the cyclotron, developed the concept of big science, he basically gave birth to what is now the super-collider. Everything has changed because of this guy and his tinkering.”

Also starring Oscar® winner Casey Affleck as Boris Pash, chief of Army counter-intelligence at the Presidio in San Francisco, Oscar® winner Rami Malek plays David Hill, an associate experimental physicist, Matthew Modine as Vannevar Bush, head of the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development, Oscar® nominee Tom Conti as Albert Einstein and Oscar® winning filmmaker and actor Kenneth Branagh plays Nobel Prize winning physicist Niels Bohr.

Nolan employs a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography for the movie, incorporating IMAX® black and white analogue photography for the first time ever, making “Oppenheimer” a cinematic event to look forward to.

Joining Murphy is the exceptional Emily Blunt, portraying Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, a biologist and botanist who adds a compelling dynamic to the story. The star-studded cast also includes Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., the director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

    Robert Downey Jr in Oppenheimer

Drawing inspiration from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan weaves a gripping narrative that explores the complex themes of living in the atomic age and the role of scientists in society. It’s not just a film; it’s an opportunity to engage in a global conversation about the profound issues Oppenheimer sought to address.

“Oppenheimer” is shot in a breathtaking combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography, introducing sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography for the first time. Nolan’s meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach to cinematography promise a visually stunning experience that will transport you straight into the heart of the narrative.

Cillian Murphy Emily Blunt in Oppenheimer

In a recent interview with Variety, co-author and historian Kai Bird expressed his awe after seeing the film, stating, “I am, at the moment, stunned and emotionally recovering from having seen it. I think it is going to be a stunning artistic achievement.” Bird believes that “Oppenheimer” has the potential to ignite a national and global dialogue about the atomic age, McCarthyism, patriotism, and the responsibility of scientists in a technology-driven society.
