Zoë Kravitz Shines with Austin Butler in Electrifying Crime Thriller “Caught Stealing” — Now Showing in Cinemas

Love, Crime, and One Seriously Unlucky Cat

Step aside, ordinary thrillers — Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing is rewriting the rules with a wild blend of gritty suspense and irresistible romance. And at the heart of it all? Zoë Kravitz, turning up the heat as Yvonne, a tough-yet-tender EMT caught in a maelstrom of violence, love, and mystery.

    Kravitz

Now showing in Philippine cinemas, this crime drama is anything but predictable.

    Kravitz & Butler = Instant On-Screen Spark

According to director Darren Aronofsky, the real engine behind Caught Stealing is the blazing chemistry between Zoë Kravitz and Austin Butler, who plays Hank Thompson, a down-on-his-luck ex-baseball player pulled into a criminal nightmare.

“They have a very exciting passionate love affair that feels like it’s about to get to a more serious place.”

Indeed, there’s an undeniable magnetism between Kravitz and Butler — their on-screen connection pulses with heat and authenticity, grounding the high-stakes action with emotional grit.

Meet Yvonne: EMT by Day, Hank’s Lifeline by Night

Kravitz’s Yvonne isn’t just a love interest — she’s the emotional anchor in a story that could’ve easily spiraled into pure chaos. Grounded yet complex, Yvonne is someone who deeply cares, even when the world around her starts to burn.

“Yvonne’s an empathetic person,” Kravitz says. “I think she likes to take care of people, including Hank. She doesn’t do the best job, but she tries.”

That humanity is what elevates Yvonne from being just a sidekick. She’s a flawed, fascinating, and fiercely loyal survivor — and Kravitz plays her with nuance and fire.

    Watch the Trailer Here:

    From Cat-Sitting to Complete Mayhem

So how does a romance between a former ballplayer and an EMT morph into a full-blown cat-and-mouse chase with gangsters? It all begins when Hank’s shady neighbor Russ (played with eerie charm by Matt Smith) asks him to watch his cat. A simple favor — until everything unravels.

Before long, Hank and Yvonne are neck-deep in NYC’s criminal underworld, running for their lives and trying to figure out why dangerous people want Hank dead.

A Cast That Packs a Punch

Besides the dynamic duo of Kravitz and Butler, Caught Stealing boasts a powerhouse cast including Matt Smith and the ever-commanding Regina King. And the brains behind the screenplay? None other than Charlie Huston, adapting his own cult-favorite novel.

“I wrote this book decades ago, and now I’m making a movie with Darren Aronofsky and Austin Butler and Matt Smith and Regina King and Zoë Kravitz,” they say. “It’s so amazing. Darren and I were both living in the East Village in the 90s, and our paths must have crossed at some point. When I first moved to New York, I was couch-surfing and living next door to where he was living at the time, so part of the joy of this project is just the shared lived experience and authenticity of that. To be able to look back and revisit that period of our lives is just fun.”

The film’s gritty tone is steeped in personal nostalgia. Both Huston and Aronofsky once lived in New York’s East Village during the ’90s, and that raw, lived-in energy pulses through every frame of the film.

Austin Butler Lives Out His Dream in Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing” – In Cinemas September 10

From Dream to Reality: Austin Butler Lands His Bucket List Role

For Austin Butler, working with director Darren Aronofsky has always been more than a career milestone—it was a childhood dream finally realized.

    Aronofsky Butler

“The first thing I was ever cast in was a student film,” Butler says. “I asked the director of that movie who his favorite director was, and he said Darren Aronofsky. Since I was a child, I had this thing in my head where I wanted to work with Darren.”

That wish comes true in Caught Stealing, a gritty new crime film adapted from Charlie Huston’s novel. Butler steps into the gritty shoes of Hank Thompson, a washed-up baseball player turned bartender who finds himself caught in a deadly gang war after doing what seemed like a harmless favor.

Plot Twist: A Cat-Sitting Favor Gone Wrong

Set in downtown New York City, Caught Stealing begins with a simple request: Hank’s neighbor, Russ (played by Matt Smith), asks him to watch his cat. But things escalate quickly. That one favor launches Hank into a blood-soaked conflict between the city’s most ruthless criminals.

Butler explains, “He’s moved to New York and become a bartender. He’s numbing himself, just drinking and living a bare minimum life,” says Butler. “And then he’s thrown into this wild set of circumstances that create a life-or-death struggle. It’s a defibrillator that shocks him back into life—to take the responsibility to protect the people he cares about and not die himself.”

    Watch the Featurette Here:

Aronofsky x Butler: A Dynamic Duo

On set, Butler thrived under Aronofsky’s intense creative direction.

“It’s a pressure cooker, and I enjoyed that,” he says. “He demands a lot of everybody, including himself, but that intensity pulls out the best in every department. It’s a pleasure to work hard when the results justify the work.”

Aronofsky, known for Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream, was equally impressed with Butler. “It’s the first time I’ve seen him show up as Austin,” says Aronofsky. “He often plays these incredible characters that he disappears in and brings them to life. But there’s so much of him in this character.”

    A Character on the Brink

Screenwriter Charlie Huston, who adapted his own novel, reveals the emotional complexity behind Hank Thompson.

“When we meet Hank, he’s at a crossroads in his life,” says Huston. “When he was younger, he thought he was going to be a superstar baseball player. He had the brightest possible future, and through his own carelessness, it went completely awry. Faced with that, he chose to run away rather than confront it and try to grow from it. He’s been running for 12 or 13 years when we meet him.”

    Shocked Back to Life

Caught Stealing isn’t just an action-packed crime saga—it’s a redemption story. It’s about a man waking up from his own apathy.

“He’s moved to New York and become a bartender.

Catch the Chaos: September 10 in PH Cinemas

With edge-of-your-seat action, emotionally charged performances, and Aronofsky’s signature tension, Caught Stealing is a must-watch thriller you won’t want to miss. Distributed locally by Columbia Pictures Philippines.

  • Darren Aronofsky Lets Loose with Wild, Wickedly Funny Crime Thriller “Caught Stealing”

Darren Aronofsky Lets Loose with Wild, Wickedly Funny Crime Thriller “Caught Stealing”

Darren Aronofsky Loosens Up in a Gritty Crime Comedy That’s Surprisingly… Fun

Known for sending audiences on psychologically intense trips with films like Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky throws us a delightful curveball with his latest film, Caught Stealing.

“first and foremost fun—a movie that for two hours would fully distract and hold your attention, and while you’re at the theater, you have a great time.”

Set in late-‘90s New York and brimming with absurd twists, Caught Stealing is a dark comedy with all the unpredictability of a late-night bar fight—and Aronofsky is clearly having a blast behind the camera.

A Long Time Coming: From Book to Big Screen

Adapted from Charlie Huston’s cult novel of the same name, the film took nearly two decades to materialize. Aronofsky was first smitten by the book 18 years ago.

“I was so entertained and pumped by the book when I first read it 18 years ago,” he says. “Then a bunch of time passed, and Charlie tracked me down with an email out of the blue—they now controlled the book and had written a screenplay.”

That email set things in motion, with Huston not just handing over the story but shaping it for the screen.

“I wrote this book way back in 1998, the year the story is set in,” they say. “There’s a ton of my own lived experience in the story’s main character. When Darren Aronofsky reached out to me 18 years ago to say that he was interested in the book, it was super exciting. I loved the idea of Darren taking his visual sensibility and the dynamism of his storytelling and applying it to this story.”

    Butler Cat

Meet Hank Thompson: The Unluckiest Bartender in NYC

Austin Butler (Elvis) stars as Hank Thompson, a former baseball player turned bartender who just wants to be left alone. But when his oddball neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) begs him to cat-sit for a few days, Hank unknowingly inherits a world of trouble.

Suddenly, he’s in the crosshairs of gangsters, con artists, and cops—all thanks to a mysterious cat and a case of mistaken identity.

What starts as a favor turns into a full-blown survival game, packed with gritty alleyway brawls, stolen cash, and an ensemble of chaotic characters.

A Cast That’s Anything but Subtle

In true Aronofsky fashion, the characters here aren’t just colorful—they’re explosive:

    • Austin Butler goes from suave to scrappy, putting on weight and fully immersing himself in Hank’s spiraling world.
    • Matt Smith is wildly unpredictable as Russ, rocking a punk attitude and questionable choices.
    • Zoë Kravitz brings heart as Yvonne, Hank’s EMT girlfriend with a strong moral compass.
    • Supporting the madness are Regina King, Vincent D’Onofrio, Liev Schreiber, Carol Kane, and a gun-wielding Bad Bunny as “Colorado,” a gangster with a thing for stylish mayhem.

Yes, This is Still an Aronofsky Film

While Caught Stealing feels like a riotous genre jump, fans of Aronofsky will still recognize his signature storytelling—emotionally raw characters, intense visual framing, and stakes that escalate wildly.

    Huston says it best:

“There’s a lot of humor in the story. It’s great to see him applying his sensibility to it. It has a very dark sensibility, and that’s Darren’s wheelhouse. Darren’s work has a deep earnestness to it, and an emotionality that’s very strong and very present. I like that his characters feel so deeply, and they always go on journeys.”

When and Where to Catch the Madness

After premiering in Puerto Rico, Caught Stealing is set to bring its wild ride to local audiences soon:
