  • MOVIE REVIEW: Primate

    MOVIE REVIEW: Primate

As a creature feature, Primate gets a lot of things right by simplifying the story and putting the horror at the center. Director Johannes Roberts and screenwriter Ernest Riera, alongside Roberts, removes all the unnecessary story and puts the focus on serving some delicious scares. It’s a tight film at 89 minutes, quickly going over the exposition so the thrills can start as soon as possible. The film works because of this narrative economy and it amps up the joy of screaming your guts out at every turn.

Primate follows Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah), who returns home to Hawaii during a college break with her good friend Kate (Victoria Wyant) and Kate’s friend Hannah (Jessica Alexander). Lucy hasn’t gone home in a while because of her dad, Adam (Troy Kotsur), a popular deaf author who is rarely home. Lucy’s absence is felt strongly by her sister, Erin (Gia Hunter).

    Primate
Victoria Wyant as “Kate”, Troy Kotsur as “Adam”, and Gia Hunter as “Erin” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

To Hannah’s surprise, she discovers that Lucy’s family has adopted a chimpanzee, Ben, who has been taught sign language and can “speak” through an ipad. There are variables involved like Kate’s brother Nick (Benjamin Cheng), who is Lucy’s crush, and two guys they meet on the plane, whom they might invite over to party with them as Lucy’s dad leaves – yet again – for another book event.

    Primate
Benjamin Cheng as “Nick”, Victoria Wyant as “Kate”, Jessica Alexander as “Hannah”, Johnny Sequoyah as “Lucy”, and Miguel Torres Umba as “Ben” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

All of this unfolds quickly, with the friends all partying while Lucy’s dad is away, completely unaware that Ben has been bitten and contracted rabies. When Ben goes feral and starts attacking, the teens are stranded in the pool – because Ben can’t swim and most likely afraid of water – away from their phones, while a rabid, intelligent chimpanzee lurks, just waiting to tear them apart.

    Primate
Victoria Wyant as “Kate”, Jessica Alexander as “Hannah”, Gia Hunter as “Erin”, and Johnny Sequoyah as “Lucy” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

Roberts and Riera do a clean job of showing us the size and scale of the house, which becomes a death trap for these teens. The characters are typical but not annoying, and their reactions to the situation are apropos to the dangers they are in.

    Primate
Victoria Wyant as “Kate” and Johnny Sequoyah as “Lucy” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

So you might not like the characters for whatever reason, but you can’t help empathizing with them because it is such a horrible situation to find yourself in.

    PRIMATE 01757RC
Director Johannes Roberts in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

Roberts has a natural feel for this kind of horror – making use of darkness, tight shots, the absence of music, and the idea that a chimpanzee is extremely mobile and strong – that makes every scene a tension-filled exercise in pure horror.

    Primate
Victoria Wyant as “Kate” and Johnny Sequoyah as “Lucy” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

And the horror is gruesome. It is bloody and brutal. When I watched, women were screaming and men were too, though they were also cheering when heads were bashed and skin torn from the flesh.

    Primate
Miguel Torres Umba as “Ben” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

This is a film that pulls no punches. It’s as edgy as a horror film should be and because the film never weighed itself down with unnecessary plot points – the family drama is never overplayed, the slight romance angle between Lucy and Nick is quickly shut down before the film’s inciting incident – the only thing we have to focus on is whether these kids will survive.

    Primate
Miguel Torres Umba as “Ben” and Johnny Sequoyah as “Lucy” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

The film sort of gives a nod to the classic horror novel (and film) Cujo by Stephen King with the film adaptation directed by Lewis Teague. But Primate comes off equally scary – if not scarier – because the chimpanzee is smart and strong and fast, while Cujo is only really two of the three.

    PRIMATE 07219R
Johnny Sequoyah as “Lucy” and Director Johannes Roberts in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

At the same time, there is a faint recognition of family as Ben grew up with Lucy, so much so that even Kate and Nick know quite a lot about him. While Lucy and the rest are not keen to go easy on the ape, that adds an extra tinge of pain running through the story. It almost feels like betrayal.

    Primate
Jessica Alexander as “Hannah” and Miguel Torres Umba as “Ben” in Primate from Paramount Pictures.

I could go on about how the film seems to mock humans trying to upset the natural order—teaching an animal human language and treating it as family—but that argument doesn’t fully hold up. Chimps are intelligent, can be trained to communicate, and we naturally love our pets as part of the family. More importantly, the film isn’t trying to make a deeper point; it’s focused on delivering some genuinely thrilling scares. And in that, it succeeds spectacularly. Primate is a ton of fun and probably best experienced in the cinema with friends.

    My Rating: 4 Stars

  • Twinbill Show Kislap at Fuego and Children of The ALGO Returns at The PETA Theater Center

Twinbill Show Kislap at Fuego and Children of The ALGO Returns at The PETA Theater Center

After their debut at PETA Control + Shift: Changing Narratives in 2024 and 2025, the bold experimental works “Kislap at Fuego” and “Children of the Algo” are officially making their return to the stage from January 27 to February 7, 2026, at the PETA Theater Center. Moving from the experimental fringes to the spotlight, these two productions will headline the Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA) Main Theater Season as a highly anticipated twinbill performance.

    Kislap at Fuego Poster

Originally born in 2024 as raw pieces for the Control + Shift LIVE shows, both works evolved into fan favorites. Their success led to a featured showcase at the Control + Shift: Changing Narratives Festival 2025, where they cemented their reputation for challenging the status quo.

Now in its third installment and welcoming broader audiences from educational institutions and the public alike, this compelling double feature bridges historic mysticism with contemporary digital realities.

Dominique La Victoria’s “Kislap at Fuego,” directed by Maribel Legarda and J-mee Katanyag, with Filipino translation by Gentle Mapagu, revolves around an unexpected fairytale between a kapre and a country girl, set amidst the Philippine Revolution against Spain. This play explores how we talk about love, rebirth, and revolution.

Mixkaela Villalon’s “Children of the Algo,” directed by Johnnie Moran, delves into the lives of Gen Z content creators, hiding their deeper realities while navigating the digital age with wit and vulnerability, challenging viewers to see beyond the algorithm.

    Children of the Algo Poster

In contrast, Children of the Algo casts audiences into the mediated world of Gen Z content creators, where identity is curated, justice is hashtagged, and meaning is constantly negotiated within and against the logic of the algorithm. Here, the contemporary quest for relevance, connection, and truth plays out in bite-sized feeds and viral narratives.

Presented as a twinbill, these works invite reflection on how Filipino values persist, adapt, or are contested across generations. By placing folklore beside feeds and myth beside memes, this pairing embodies PETA Control + Shift’s narrative change approach—asking how tradition and technology collide, converse, and co-exist, and how Filipinos continue to imagine revolution in a rapidly shifting world.

For more information on Kislap at Fuego and Children of the Algo, including performance dates, ticketing, and educational engagements, visit PETA’s official channels and social media.

  • Ben&Ben Releases “Duyan” Music Video Starring Khalil Ramos and Gabbi Garcia

Ben&Ben Releases “Duyan” Music Video Starring Khalil Ramos and Gabbi Garcia

Ben&Ben continued to solidify their status as one of the most important voices of OPM in 2025. The acclaimed band made history as the first Filipino act to surpass three billion streams on global streaming platform Spotify, while also earning major wins at the 28th Awit Awards, including Album of the Year for their third studio album, The Traveller Across Dimensions and Best Performance by a Group Recording Artist for “Triumph.” As the year drew to a close, Ben&Ben’s music found itself intertwined with national consciousness when “Kapangyarihan,” their collaboration with SB19, emerged as a modern anthem in protest spaces, echoing public anger amid allegations of corruption surrounding flood control and infrastructure projects.

    PR Photo Apple Music

Now, as they turn the page to a brand-new year, the multi-awarded nine-piece collective invites listeners to start the year on a more intimate yet optimistic note with the release of their new single “Duyan”—out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Written and composed by frontman Miguel Benjamin and produced by longtime collaborator Ziv alongside Ben&Ben, “Duyan” represents a profound, romantic bond that defies distance, time, and obstacles. The rousing pop-rock ballad encapsulates what true love really means: deep affection, unwavering loyalty, and the choice to remain committed even when faced with challenges and adversities.

According to Miguel, he wrote the song three days before his wedding, while sitting alone in his car. The song contains everything he wanted to tell his then-future wife.

“There are songs where artists write themselves in the music, and this is one of them,” Miguel explains. “That day, the idea of fully offering oneself to another person stayed with me. It’s a love inspired by lifelong commitment, shared journeys, and selflessness. More than anything, I realized that I was ready to make the promise before God. I felt it in the deepest part of my heart.”

Musically, the band worked closely with their good friend and constant collaborator Ziv to honor the song’s emotional core, while “maximizing the soul and expanse of the band’s instruments to take it to the fullest version it was meant to become.”

The song is part of the Mahiwaga Trilogy, Ben&Ben’s thematic arc on romantic relationships. The series began with “Pagtingin,” a groovy meditation on love at first spark and infatuation, and continued with “Araw-Araw,” a folk-pop ode to choosing your partner every single day. “Duyan” closes the chapter with finality, speaking of lifelong commitment and assurance.

“Two years after I wrote the song Duyan and kept it as a very personal part of my life, it made sense for it to be put out there,” shares Miguel. “It also made sense for it to be the conclusion of the trilogy of songs/videos Pagtingin and Araw-Araw.”

    Music Video

The song will be accompanied by the release of a music video starring real-life couple and actors Gabbi Garcia and Khalil Ramos, who also appeared in the previous installments of the Mahiwaga Trilogy. For Khalil, returning to the project was a full-circle moment for both Gabbi and him.

DUYAN PR PHOTO GABBI AND KHALIL FINAL

“Thematically, it’s beautiful to see how the story progressed since Pagtingin,” shares the Filipino actor, singer, and filmmaker. “I vividly remember how we shot those two videos, and the film LSS.

Gab and I grew alongside these songs. At every stage of the trilogy, we could deeply relate to it, because it reflected the different phases of our own relationships through the years.”

Miguel praised both actors in the music video for their enduring role in the band’s visual storytelling. “It was so good to be able to work with our longtime friends Gabbi and Khalil once more in this music video. You could say we’ve both grown so much in life and in our careers ever since the last project we did together. It was great catching up and telling stories of the past and making new memories.”

Directed by Lunchbox Studios under the helm of Daniel Aguilar, the wedding-themed music video brings the trilogy to a close through rosy, introspective visuals.

Ben&Ben said viewers can expect to see a wonderful blend of magic and everyday life in the music video: “We’ve been working with (Lunchbox Studios) for a while now, and for this video, we wanted to do a very intimate but expansive conclusion to the videos we’ve done before. We collaborated on a concept of a portrayal of the stages of commitment done in magical realism.”

Ben&Ben’s “Duyan” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch out for the music video of “Duyan” on Ben&Ben’s official YouTube channel.

Bringing Ben to Life: The Blood-Chilling Practical Effects Behind “Primate”

Just when you thought horror had shown it all, director Johannes Roberts delivers something truly primal.

    PRIMATE 02736R2

His latest film, Primate, takes terror to new—and hairy—heights, following a group of teens whose seemingly sweet pet chimpanzee, Ben, suddenly turns from cuddly to killer. But what really makes PRIMATE stand out isn’t just the gore or suspense—it’s how real it all feels. And that’s thanks to a decision most modern filmmakers would shy away from: using practical effects over CGI.

    No Green Screens, Just Grit

Forget pixels. From the very beginning, Roberts knew that Primate needed to be rooted in something tangible.

“A movie like this requires a feeling of immediacy,” he says. “We decided to go with practical effects to create a more visceral experience both for the audience and the actors. But the actors had to interact closely with Ben. A real chimp would be a real threat.”

And build him they did—with terrifying detail.

To bring the chimpanzee to life, Roberts enlisted the help of Millennium FX, one of the most respected practical effects studios in the world. Known for their work in films and TV like Doctor Who and The Wolfman, their team was tasked with crafting a chimp so lifelike, it would blur the line between man and monster.

Meet Ben: A Chimp Made by Hand (and Heart)

Enter Miguel Torres Umba, an actor and movement specialist who physically embodied Ben by wearing a custom-built chimpanzee suit. But this wasn’t any ordinary costume. It was a full-body, animatronic-enhanced suit designed to capture everything from subtle expressions to full-blown fury.

“Johannes is a great horror director,” says Gorton. “He understands that the more tangible and in the moment something is, the more powerful it is. Our job was to make Ben seem real, make Ben practical and make Ben sympathetic, but at the same time dangerous. It’s a hugely physical performance so we needed to strike a balance between allowing the actor’s freedom and making it feel real enough to pass muster on the screen.”

From sketch to screen, the chimp suit went through a whirlwind five-week build before the first camera test. The initial prototype? “Held together with string and sticky tape,” Gorton laughs. But even then, the potential was undeniable.

50 Artists. 1 Suit. Infinite Nightmares.

Creating Ben required more than just a costume. It took a team of over 50 artists and technicians, each working tirelessly to ensure every aspect was just right—down to the last strand of fur.

The fur itself? Hand-dyed yak hair, carefully punched into mesh by hand, styled and steamed daily. According to co-director Kate Walshe, maintaining Ben’s appearance was like running a “monkey hair salon” on set every morning.

The suit came with multiple heads—each one engineered for a specific use. One could move its mouth, lips, and nostrils with the help of puppeteers. Another was built for intense attack scenes, featuring an exaggerated open mouth full of razor-like teeth. There was even a scaled-down puppet version for tight shots and a non-robotic “stunt head” to keep performers safe during action scenes.

From Family Pet to Frightening Predator

For Torres Umba, playing Ben was more than physical—it was emotional. As an actor, he had to embody a character that audiences would first see as a beloved companion, only to watch that connection twist into something violent and horrifying.

I was impressed by how visual and evocative it was. The story evolves into a fascinating journey. We connect with Ben as part of the family and then watch in disbelief seeing a loved one transform into a ruthless monster. But they love him and he loves them back, so there’s always the hope he might be okay. That creates a sense of hope that punches you in the face when the violence spins out of control.”

This emotional arc, combined with practical effects, results in a character that feels painfully real. Ben isn’t just a monster—he’s a reflection of the fragile bond between humans and nature, and how easily it can snap.

    Why Practical Effects Still Matter

In a world dominated by CGI creatures, Primate makes a powerful case for the return of old-school filmmaking. With real-world textures, live puppeteering, and actor-driven movement, the horror hits different—because it looks and feels real.

And that realism pays off. From subtle facial movements to sudden outbursts of violence, Ben’s presence is chillingly authentic. You’re not watching pixels on a screen—you’re staring into the eyes of something that might, just might, be alive.

    Ready to Meet Ben?

Whether you’re a horror fan, a special effects enthusiast, or someone who simply appreciates boundary-pushing filmmaking, Primate delivers a thrilling, unforgettable ride.

    Terrifying. Tragic. Tangible.

Ben isn’t your typical movie monster—and that’s exactly what makes him unforgettable.
