  • Emma Roberts Joins ‘Spider-Man’ Movie Spinoff ‘Madame Web’

Scream Queens and American Horror Story star Emma Roberts has joined the ensemble for Sony’s upcoming film Madame Web, Deadline reports.

Much like Venom and Morbius, Sony’s Madame Web is yet another character from the world of Spider-Man that’s getting a live-action film from Sony. In the comics, Madame Web is an elderly woman who suffers from myasthenia gravis and has life support resembling a spider web. Instead of physically fighting against villains, Madame Web has the power of precognition and clairvoyance which she uses to help the innocent.

The upcoming movie will star 50 Shades of Gray actress Dakota Johnson in the titular role alongside Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Tahar Rahim. It has yet to be revealed what role Roberts will be playing in the film.

Sony continues to shape its movie universe featuring Spider-Man characters. Other films also slated for release from Sony are Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and the Bad Bunny starrer El Muerto.

Madame Web is set for release in the US on July 7, 2023. It is directed by S.J. Clarkson with a screenplay from Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

  • ARTablado Presents ARTiPARC: Shades, Shapes and Stories

The human experience consists mainly of shades, shapes and stories.

The artists who make up ARTipolo, an art organization founded in 2014 and based in Rizal Province, know this only too well. As a group, ARTipolo uses its creative power to bring forth “a common narrative condensed from the individual stories of each of the members”—as an artist or simply as a human being plowing through the very thickets and twists of contemporary existence. ARTipolo contends that, “shared individual stories become part of the collective narrative—or social history”—and eventually woven into the fabric of the national psyche.

    Thumb 1

To amplify this philosophy, Robinsons Land’s ARTablado recently signed an agreement with PARC Foundation and ARTipolo to mount “ARTiPARC: Shades, Shapes, and Stories,” on view from July 1 to 15 at ARTablado in Level 3 of Robinsons Galleria. The show features the works of 75 artists—a celebration of unity among its members, but also a testament to the sublimity of diversity, with each ARTipolo artist having his or her own distinctive style and artistic strategy. Robinsons Land ARTablado provides a platform for the members of ARTipolo to present every shade, shape and story of the human experience, all the transcendent hues of the examined life.

    thumb 2

Using art as its platform, ARTipolo has been able to raise funds for various charitable and professional organizations such as Soroptimist International (Antipolo Chapter), Kiwanis Club of Antipolo, Hemophilia Association of the Philippines for Love and Service (Haplos), Philippine Bar Association (PBA) and even partnered with local businesses such as Loreland Farm and Resort, Café Lupe, Luljehetas Hanging Garden, Casa Nieves, and Hotel LeBlanc, to name a few. The beneficiaries of these exhibits and auctions are mostly youth and children.

“ARTiPARC” also benefits the PARC Foundation which transforms the lives of underprivileged youths through its flagship program billed as PARCaralan, a free artistic, life skills training program with character-building workshops, cultural immersion, and assistance in seeking career opportunities.

Robinsons Land ARTablado, on the other hand, believes in the advocacy of ARTipolo: it not only supports the creative endeavors of Filipino artists, but also the noble causes that are close to their hearts.

The participating artists are: Alexandra Monserrat, Amado Ongtauco, Amador Inlayo, Aminah Sioson, Antonette Literal-Tulay, Aris Ventures, Ber Nardo, Bernardo Matias, Celes “Onit” Untalan, Cha M. Baladjay, Charmaine Marie De Chavez, Chrisellie C. Guzik, Cindy Grace A. Santiago, Corazon Gaufo Patarata, Crishaira Peliño-Bode, Dana Bote, Daphne Lagunay, Dea Solis, Diane Cabas, Don Cabanza, Dyna Quizon Ondoy, Eleanor Habal Robleza, Gem Yonzon Blanco, Gerry Marasigan, Hilario Barrozo, Jaspreet Kaur, Jayson Z. Borlon, Jenella L. Medina, Jerry Y. Contridas, JM Guzik, Joemari Cagas, Jun Vicaldo, Katlene S. Enriquez, Krister Isip, Liana Mariz P. Mesina, Lyndon Garrovillas, Mac Baladjay, Mae Dy De Veyra, Marge DC Gomez, Maria Len len Moriones, Marie Claire, Marites Paragas-Mesina, Marj Sula-Aquino, Mark Joseph Beloria, Marlo Avila Roxas , Marque De Leon, Martha Poblador -Tan, Mary Rose Gob, Mathilda Sula-Sun, Michael Ocmer Briquillo, Michelle Diwa, Nanette Cruz, Nelson Basa, Nelson Dela Cruz, Nelson Francisco, Nelson Medina, Noel Martinez Basa, Norberto Villez, Pauline Dela Cruz, Pol A. Mesina Jr. , Ramil S. Rodriguez, Ran Bolivar, Rod Lopez, Rod Talde, Rodgie Gapayao, Roland Tulay, Rymer Gengoni, Sharisse Atacador, Sonny F. Perida, Tam Urao, Veronica Dumlao, Vivian Nocum Limpin, Ysmael Ablao Fontanilla, Yurika Palmones, and Zyril Contridas.

With this roster of 75 artists, this is by far the biggest show Robinsons Land ARTablado has ever hosted since its debut in 2020.

ARTablado, a portmanteau of “art” and “entablado” is Robinsons Land’s very own stage in showcasing the Filipino ingenuity and creativity. This platform allows emerging artists to freely express themselves through art and paves the way to greater recognition of their talent and hard work.

  • Jollibee Group and Yoshinoya International Hold Partnership Ceremony

The Jollibee Group welcomed Yoshinoya International executives in a Partnership Ceremony on June 25 to celebrate their collaboration that will bring the authentic Yoshinoya Japan beef bowl experience to the Philippines.

Yoshinoya, Japan’s world-famous Beef Bowl Chain, is the first foray into Japanese food by the Jollibee Group. Jollibee Foods Corporation formed a joint venture with Yoshinoya International Philippines Inc. (“Yoshinoya International”) to operate the Yoshinoya stores in the country, with plans to expand to 50 stores in the long term.

    Jollibee and Yoshinoya

The Yoshinoya International executives who attended the private ceremony were Tetsuya Naruse, CEO of Asia Yoshinoya International Sdn Bhd (“Asia Yoshinoya”); Shigekazu Miyata, President of Yoshinoya International; and Shigeo Kurokawa, Director of Yoshinoya International.

Asia Yoshinoya CEO Tetsuya Naruse hailed its partnership with the Jollibee Group during the partnership ceremony. “In the history of Yoshinoya, I can say that we have never encountered a company such as yours. I’ve met the best partners that we could work with and I’m really looking forward to this partnership.”

“We would like to thank Yoshinoya International for partnering with Jollibee Group. Together, under Yoshinoya Jollibee Foods Inc., we will grow and expand Yoshinoya in the Philippines, and we will work hard to make it the No. 1 Japanese restaurant in the country,” said Joseph Tanbuntiong, President for Philippine Business of the Jollibee Group.

In a disclosure released in February 2021, the Jollibee Group said it aims to be the leading market developer of foreign restaurant brands in the country, as these foreign franchised brands are expected to contribute to the sustainable growth of its domestic business.  Jollibee Group continues to see the success of brands like Burger King, Panda Express, and PHO24 and will apply the same success drivers in expanding Yoshinoya.

    Partnership for success

Like the humble beginnings of the Jollibee Group, Yoshinoya started as a family-run shop located at Nihonbashi Fish Market in Tokyo. Today, Yoshinoya has more than 2,000 global locations.

“Our dreams to make it big one day in our respective markets have driven Yoshinoya and the Jollibee Group to continuously work hard and always strive for excellence,” said Tanbuntiong. “With similar values and a true love for great tasting food, we see a strong foundation for success in this partnership.”

“I met Jollibee Group Founder and Chairman Tony Tan Caktiong, and after our conversation, I concluded that there is no other company that we would like to do this partnership with. And although some years have passed since then, we have reached this moment today and it’s all thanks to all your efforts,” added Naruse.

“Part of who we are in Yoshinoya Holdings is being ‘For the People,’ which means reaching as many people as possible with our tasty and value-for-money food—this is also what the Jollibee Group is all about. I look forward to working well together and I commit that we in Yoshinoya will give our full support to the Jollibee Group,” he added.

Now ready to serve the same superior tasting and authentic Japanese Beef Bowls, Yoshinoya is set for its grand opening slated this July.

  • CCP to Pay Tribute to the 2022 National Artists

A Tribute will be given to eight exemplary personalities who were proclaimed National Artists, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Main Theater on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 5pm.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte conferred them the Order of National Artist in the field of dance, theatre, film and broadcast arts, literature, music, and fashion design, in a ceremony held last June 16 at the Rizal Hall of Malacanang. They were declared as the new National Artists by virtue of Presidential Proclamation no. 1390 signed on June 10.

2022 ONA Parangal Artcard FINAL HiRes

The newly declared National Artists are Agnes Locsin (Dance), the late Salvacion Lim-Higgins (Fashion Design), the late Marilou Diaz-Abaya (Film and Broadcast Arts), Ricardo ‘Ricky’ Lee (Film and Broadcast Arts), Nora Cabaltera Villamayor aka Nora Aunor (Film), Gemino Abad (Literature), Fides Cuyugan-Asensio (Music), and Antonio Mabesa (Theater).

Agnes Locsin is a choreographer, director, and teacher. She is dubbed as one of the “most progressive contemporary choreographers in the Philippines,” for she distinctively utilizes Filipino beliefs, rituals, and ethnic traditions in her choreographies, concepts, and direction, which she was able to beautifully merge with her knowledge in Western dance techniques and called it “neo-ethnic.” Among her successful works are Babaylan, which won second place in the Tokyo International Choreography Competition in 1993; Taong Talangka (Man-Crab); Salome which won second place for dancer Camille Ordinario in the 1994 Concours International de la Danse in Paris, France; and narrative works like one on the life of the mythical hero Labaw Dungon in the epic Hinilawod from the island of Panay.

Salvacion Lim-Higgins, known to the fashion world as “Slim’s”, is credited for innovating and transforming the look of terno into a world-class silhouette by combining the elements of Philippine costume with European couture details and construction. She was known for her exquisite drapery, constant and evocative use of indigenous materials such as piña and jusi, referencing ethnic motifs in her modern dresses, and forward-looking and cutting-edge approach to fashion. Lim-Higgins introduced draping into traditional costumes and developed “convertible ternos.” Filipiniana took a more nuanced look through the eye-catching costumes she created for the Bayanihan Dance Company.

Marilou Diaz-Abaya was a film and television director and screenwriter. She began her career in the 1980s and was part of the generation that defined what is today remembered as the “Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.” Her notable works are Brutal (1980), which marked Diaz-Abaya’s clear directorial style and unique feminist voice, as she emerged as a bold experimenter of storytelling structure and a fierce creative protester of the harrowing plight of women in a male-dominated society; Moral (1982), which offered a nuanced commentary on the expectations and burdens placed onwomen’s shoulders against which they explore their desires and navigate their shifting place in society; Karnal (1983), where the perverse entanglement of paternalism, desire, and drive for control results in a violent tragedy; Milagros (1997), where she moved away from pointed advocacies and delved instead on an enigmatic exploration of feminine desire and innocence; Sa Pusod ng Dagat (1998), which further explored the complex meaning of womanhood; Jose Rizal (1998), the biopic of the national hero; Muro-Ami (1999), portrayed the lives of exploited children in the illegal practice of reef hunting; Bagong Buwan (2001), endeavored to tell a fair and informed story about war-torn Muslim Mindanao; and Noon at Ngayon: Pagsasamang Kay Ganda (2003), which tells the story of four middle-aged women who have weathered life’s storms and reconciled with their pasts.

Ricardo Lee also known as Ricky Lee is a screenwriter for film and television, journalist, playwright, and a multi-awarded fictionist who published several novels, plays, essays, and short story collections along his screenplays and screenwriting manuals. He has demonstrated his mastery of writing historical films, literary and true-to-life adaptations, political, courtroom, and dramas, the stories of “outsiders” and marginalized figures such as laborers, prostitutes, rebels, migrant workers, and gay people, and his consistent elevation of all manner of genre fare, from horror to tearjerkers to comedies. Lee emerged in screenwriting in the late 1970s as part of the generation of filmmakers who ushered the “Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.”

Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, also known as Nora Aunor, has been in different fields for more than four decades—film, television, music, and stage. Her journey to fame started when she joined and won a local amateur singing contest in a radio program called “Darigold Jamboree”. She came to be known as the girl with the “golden voice” with the unique tone of her voice. It was Tower Productions that gave her the biggest break: the title role in D’ Musical Teenage Idols, opposite Tirso Cruz III. Sampaguita Pictures’ 34th-anniversary presentation was also a Nora-Tirso starrer, Fiesta Extravaganza, and that is when people began referring to her as “Superstar”. Succeeding years would see her taking on a wide variety of movie projects, showing her versatility by making comedies, melodramas, and musicals. Her extensive filmography with 170 films is not only matched but exceeded by the number of awards and citations she has received from local and international organizations.

Dr. Gémino H. Abad is a writer, critic, scholar, literary historian, and anthologist with numerous books and literary awards including ten poetry volumes, nine volumes of literary criticism, two volumes on his own poetics, two short story collections, a five-volume historical anthology of Philippine poetry in English, and a six-volume anthology of Philippine short stories in English, from 1956 (the year where the late Leopoldo Yabes’ anthology left off) to 2009. Several of these books have received national literary awards such as the Gawad Dangal ng Lahi given by the Carlos Palanca Memorial Foundation; the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for his poetry; the CCP Award for Poetry; the Ani ng Dangal Award of the NCCA; the UMPIL’s Gawad Alagad ni Balagtas for lifetime achievement in poetry and literary criticism; the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan sa Larangan ng Panitikan from the City of Maynila; the Manila Critics’ Circle National Book Award for poetry, for anthology, for personal anthology; and the Philippines Free Press Literary Awards for the short story, essay, and poetry.

Professor Emeritus Fides Cuyugan-Asensio’s more than six decades of involvement with the art of opera displays her dedication and passion to bringing inaccessible Western dramatic idiom into Philippine theaters for the Filipino opera enthusiasts to experience and learn from. She’s dedicated to opera and musical theater, which enriched the Philippine artistic scene. Her exceptional achievements in many years of exemplary service to the field such as performing, teaching, producing, and directing opera and theater productions, contributed to a Renaissance of classical musical theater in the country. Her performance of Sisa in Felipe de Leon’s Noli Me Tangere became a hallmark in the country’s musical theater history.

Antonio “Tony” Mabesa, known as the Lion of the Theater, was a director, actor, and teacher who greatly contributed to the growth and diversity of Philippine theater. His theater teaching, formalism as aesthetics, and methods of production have made an impact on his students. He was a professor, artist and mentor who will be remembered for his lessons on discipline, commitment and respect for theater.

The Order of National Artists (Orden ng mga Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts; namely, Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Arts, and Architecture and Allied Arts. The order is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and conferred by the President of the Philippines upon recommendation by both institutions.

The Order of National Artists was established by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27, 1972 to give appropriate recognition and prestige to Filipinos who have distinguished themselves and made outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and letters. The order is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and conferred by the President of the Philippines upon recommendation by both institutions.

The National Artist Award is given every three years by the President of the Philippines in the month of June.  To date, there are a total of 81 National Artists, including those newly proclaimed.

Tickets for the public will be given starting 3 PM at the CCP Ramp.

In observance of health and safety guidelines, those attending the event are advised to read the CCP protocols for Alert Level 1: https://bit.ly/CCPNewNormal.

  • Beautiful Chaos: a review of ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’

It was exhausting watching ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once.’ Exhausting physically. Exhausting mentally. Exhausting emotionally. And I loved every minute of it.

The film is over two hours of crazy, out-of-this-world action-adventure moments but carefully interwoven into a poignant drama about family (mothers and daughter; husbands and wives, mothers and fathers) and, ultimately, the meaning of life. It is a story about the multiverse, the number of alternate realities that are present and happening simultaneously with ours, and how one character, Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) must learn to access every possible iteration of her to save the world – every world in every universe, in fact – and save her daughter.

Directors and screenwriters Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (credited as Daniels, one moniker for both) approach this material with a madcap sense of humor. They are not afraid to get dark (the violence and gore can get pretty intense), not afraid to get vulgar (there are dildos and buttplug jokes that are actually funny), not afraid to get meta (in all the variations of Evelyn’s character, there is quite a number that reference her career), not afraid to get weird, and definitely not afraid to get personal.

The story is already a lot to deal with: an ordinary housewife, while trying to pay her taxes, discovers that in an alternate reality, she discovered the multiverse and found a way to “verse jump.” Verse jumping is accessing the memories and skills and talents of another version of yourself in another universe and little, ordinary housewife, Evelyn must now find a way to learn how to verse jump so she can save the universe from a destructive being called Jobu Topaki.

Mixed in with this dense science fiction adventure is a story about a woman in strained relationships with her husband (played by Ke Huy Quan) and daughter (an excellent Stephanie Hsu) and father (James Hong). The film manages to bounce back and forth effortlessly from adventure to family drama while pondering upon the meaning of life.

If that wasn’t enough, Daniels manages to imbue the film with exquisite filmmaking. There are split screens, subtitles that shift and change with the story, and clever cinematography and editing. As Evelyn moves between realities, the tone and style of filmmaking change as well. There are homages to Wong Kar Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’ in some realities, others are homages to Jackie Chan period kung fu films. The costume designs are out of this world in some moments. Nothing can be expected and everything will take you by surprise.

It’s chaos but there’s so much sense in all of it. It’s why I say ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ is exhausting. You are laughing out loud in one moment and then, in the next, you are marveling at the fight choreography right before it brings you to horror film levels of suspense and dread. The film itself takes on the infinite possibilities of its own story and Daniels is unafraid to go there and mine it for all its thrills, laughs, and tears.

The performances are all incredible, Quan makes a fantastic return in front of the camera (he became famous as a child actor in the 80s films ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’), while Stephanie Hsu shows off her incredible range. Jamie Lee Curtis is incredible and reliable, as always. But at the heart of this movie is Michelle Yeoh. The role is so demanding and she manages to be as mercurial as she is human. She infuses Evelyn with such an ordinariness, a woman who is completely unprepared for this wild journey she is about to enter but can quickly shift to a myriad of different characters. It would be a shame if this performance isn’t recognised at all by any award-giving bodies.

And at the heart of all this beautiful chaos, is a story that really digs deep into what it means to be alive and what it means to be happy in this very crazy world we live in. The craziness of this movie is just an exaggerated reflection of the craziness of the real world of the audience watching it. This two hours and twenty-minutes film manages to encapsulate a lot of this younger generation’s fears and anxieties and triggers and manages to create a dialogue between Evelyn and her husband, daughter, and father that proposes a sort of rationale that can address the underlying nihilism and cynicism that is at the surface of this film.

By the end, I was in tears. I was emotionally spent as much as I was mentally overwhelmed and physically drained by the experience. The last time I felt like this was watching Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’ in a 3D IMAX cinema, though I don’t remember laughing as much. I’m definitely watching this film again.
