It is a bright space with emerald-colored furnishing where you can hang with friends or work while sipping on a cup of joe. Order the classics like the Americano, and Flat White, or go for more unique finds like the Campfire Latte. They serve coffee for now but will soon be serving cocktails as well.

    Deuces

Another newly opened café in Makati, this one is not too hard to miss as it’s screaming in pink. It’s a dreamy café that will almost remind you of Seoul’s café culture, which is huge by the way! Its menu does not focus on just one cuisine but focuses on inspiration from multiple cultures. “The meals will be prepared using a variety of cooking methods from convection, ovens, stove tops hearth, and a smoker to infuse a smoked essence in the dishes,” according to Chef Josh Boutwood’s website.

    Japonesa

Going back to Poblacion is this new hip spot that serves Japanese and Peruvian flavors. Enjoy dishes like the Anticuchos De Lomo featuring a US tenderloin beef, La Japonesa which is crispy rice, spicy tuna with green chili, or the Maguro Gremolata which is a seared tuna belly dish with salsa and gremolata. Sip on some of their signature cocktails while you’re at it!

  • LOOK: Suntory’s SUI Gin is finally in the Philippines!

SUI Gin is made in Japan with a combination of botanicals that are distinctly Japanese: yuzu, green tea, and ginger. Combined with traditional gin botanicals – juniper berry, coriander seed, angelica root, cardamom, cinnamon, bitter orange peel, and lemon peel – the result is a gin that is clear, refreshing, and pairs well with any and all dishes.

It takes its name SUI 翆 after the Kingfisher. On the bottle, the bold Kanji character is inked by master calligrapher Tansetsu Ogino. Kanji 翡翠, which means Jade, is a nod to its tall hexagonal shape reflecting clear and beautiful blue-green accents that speak of Suntory’s hope that SUI will spread its wings and soar high in the gin market.

Yuzu is commonly used to accentuate flavor in Japanese dishes. It lends a refreshing citrus aroma and taste that opens up the palate. Green tea offers gentle umami notes for a rich body that harmonizes with meals. Finally, Ginger offers a mild spicy flavor with a clean aftertaste, leading to an invigorating finish.

Suntory brings SUI to the Philippines a new standard of gin 1

    The perfect SUI Gin serve

To savor the refreshing taste of SUI Gin, the perfect combination and ratio are important. Imagine getting together with friends for a celebration at your favorite restaurant? All you need is a bottle of SUI Gin with the perfect mixture.

SUI Gin & Soda: This is the classic recommended way to serve SUI Gin. It is a simple mix of soda water to let SUI’s delicate flavor shine through.

SUI Sonic: For depth and complexity, add a splash of tonic water.

Mix it up!: You can make your own concoction for a more customized experience: add a squeeze of lemon, a tablespoon of Yuzu juice, raw grated ginger, or green tea. For more unique flavors, get trendy by adding crushed plum, wasabi, shiso leaves, or frozen oranges. Experience the flavors of SUI Gin that complement every meal occasion.

    SUI Sonic

SUI Gin is now available in S&R stores nationwide and coming soon at your nearest supermarkets and liquor stores, as well as GrabMart, Lazada, Boozy, and Boozeshop.

  • ‘Stranger Things 4’ Writers Reveal Some Unscripted Moments from the Season

After releasing the explosive and emotional last two episodes of Stranger Things 4 last Friday, the writers of the hit Netflix series have revealed to fans some of the unscripted moments from this season.

Through their Twitter account, the writers shared three scenes where the cast members improvised. Check them out below (Spoilers Alert!):

Viewers were quick to get attached to the new character, Eddie Munson, the misunderstood leader of the Hellfire Club. This made his demise even more painful to watch, with Dustin listening to his last words about finally getting that diploma. According to the Stranger Things writers, that last phrase “I love you, man” was actually improvised by actor Joseph Quinn.

Another emotional scene from the finale was Lucas holding Max’s dying body after suffering from Vecna’s curse. The writers revealed that the elder Sinclair’s desperate plea “Erica, help” was actually improvised by actor Caleb McLaughlin.

Finally, the writers also shared that the kiss between Joyce and Hopper was not part of the script, and was only added in by stars David Harbour and Winona Ryder during filming.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things 4 follows Eleven and the gang as they battle another threat from the Upside Down– Vecna. This monster uses its victims’ dark past to kill them for a sinister purpose that could endanger everyone in Hawkins.

  • Boy Noriega’s ‘Bayan Bayanan’ is Now a Musical from Director Anton Juan

Internationally recognized theater and film director Anton Juan has transformed the classic play of celebrated playwright Bienvenido Noriega, Jr. into a refreshing new musical billed as Bayan Bayanan.  This will be staged at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo on July 15, 16, 2022 (7pm shows) and July 17, 2022 (matinee).

The play portrays the heart-warming and, sometimes, heartbreaking stories of Filipinos trying to carve a better life for themselves abroad.

Making up the cast are well-known theater actors as well as first-time stage performers.   Professional theater actress and singer Banaue Miclat-Janssen portrays the central character, “Manang.” Banaue has performed in various spaces and films in the Philippines and abroad.  She is an Aliw Awards Foundation Hall of Fame for Best Performer awardee.

Ava Olivia Santos, a singer, recording artist, and an actor in theater, film and television, portrays a Filipino nurse, struggling to carve a better life for herself abroad, seeking a fairy tale love.

Noriega wrote himself into the story as Dino, a scholar sent to study abroad on an international scholarship, much as Boy Noriega was, when he was inspired to write the play.  Dino is portrayed by theater actor and classically trained singer Carlo Mañalac, who is remembered for having played several roles in different presentations of “Kanser,” a theatrical adaptation of Rizal’s “Noli Me Tangere.”

Roxy Aldiosa, a soprano who is both a theater actress and musical director, teams up with tenor Carlo Angelo Falcis, who is a singer, actor, and voice coach, to portray a comically annoying couple, status seekers who believe that any life abroad, even hardship posts, are better than life in the Philippines.  Jacinta Remulla, who is known for her acting in “Suntok sa Buwan,” has been cast as the couple’s sultry and flirtatious niece, “Connie.”

Richard Macaroyo is Pol, the TNT, the illegal migrant, luckless in so many ways.  Greg de Leon, who portrayed “Elias” in Noli Me Tangere:  The Opera, is the perennially homesick Ginoong Luz, whose loneliness can only be lifted by the melodious singing of his wife.  Opera singer Jane Wee is Ginang Luz.

Completing the Bayan Bayanan cast are Christine Angelica Evangelista, Carlo Mañalac, Timothy Carlo Racho, Kendrick Tamayo, Abigail Sulit, Jane Florence Wee, Matteo Teehankee, Karina Macaspac, and Adrian de Ubago.  All with golden voices, and engaging acting talents.  Watch the show and be moved by their refreshing performances.

“I have directed this play many times before in Europe, and each time there is always something new. It grows like a pearl, takes shape in the memory and hearts of those who perform it and those who watch it: why? Because it is real. It is grounded on real characters we can identify with, in all their beauty and vulnerability, in all their strengths and their weaknesses,” says Anton Juan.

“BUT ALWAYS we are grounded in that HOPING, in that FAITH — by which the Filipino nation is known for. There may be floods, martial laws, oppressions, interventions, and schisms in our history. But we always remember two things: 1. To laugh at ourselves and forgive – be it ourselves, others, or nature (sometimes to a fault, those who are greedy and malevolent to us and our people); and, 2.  To pray, and to hope and have faith — without which there is no salvation.”

“I dedicate my direction of this play to all the migrant workers and migrant friends who “homed” me, “nationed” me in my times of study and work abroad, who “cradled” me as they cradled each other in times of crisis and personal rollercoaster times of highs and lows; to the entire cast and the production for taking special time to share their talent and their esteemed careers, countless dearest friends who helped, and our audiences  — who are ALL part of the play because this play is about them, us, a nation outside their country.”

For more information, visit the CCP website (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph).
