  • Steven Spielberg Explores Humanity’s Greatest Mystery in “Disclosure Day,” Opening in PH Cinemas June 10

Steven Spielberg Explores Humanity’s Greatest Mystery in “Disclosure Day,” Opening in PH Cinemas June 10

Steven Spielberg is heading back to the genre that helped shape modern cinema as he unveils his newest science fiction epic, Disclosure Day, arriving in Philippine cinemas on June 10.

    DisclosureDay 1

Written and directed by Spielberg, the film reunites the acclaimed filmmaker with screenwriter David Koepp, his longtime creative partner behind unforgettable blockbusters including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Leading the star-studded cast are Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo, all set to bring Spielberg’s latest vision of mystery and discovery to life on the big screen.

Watch the Trailer for Disclosure Day:

A Return to the Wonders of the Unknown

For Spielberg, Disclosure Day marks a meaningful return to themes he first explored in his 1977 classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. While the new film stands on its own, it revisits humanity’s endless fascination with life beyond Earth and the questions that continue to haunt us decades later.

“During Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I would say to myself: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of this turned out to be true?’” Spielberg says. ”Almost 50 years later, I’m now thinking: ‘Wouldn’t be it be wonderful for us to actually know that all of this is true?’”

That curiosity has been with Spielberg since childhood. Recalling a formative memory, the director shares how a meteor shower sparked his lifelong obsession with the cosmos.

    DisclosureDay 2

“I remember one summer, my dad took me out to look at the annual Perseid meteor shower when we were living in New Jersey,” Spielberg shares. “Overnight, I developed a real curiosity about what is happening up there in the stars, on some planet orbiting in any number of countless solar systems, and if one of them might have a civilization that was advanced enough to travel the universe.”

Truth, Secrecy, and the Modern World

Though packed with large-scale sci-fi spectacle, Disclosure Day also reflects many of today’s real-world anxieties. The film examines misinformation, hidden agendas, and society’s struggle to separate truth from manipulation.

“Disclosure Day is a movie about misinformation and the challenge of finding truth in a culture when powerful people have tools to blur the lines of fact and fiction, of what is real and unreal, in service of protecting and advancing their agendas,” Spielberg says. “It’s a movie that also asks questions about what we do with truth that expands our understanding of the universe in a way that challenges the beliefs that give us meaning, including religion.

The director also points to the lasting influence of classic conspiracy storytelling.

    DisclosureDay 4

“The X-Files taught us that the truth is out there, but what happens when we find it? Can we accept it? Do we reject it? Will it bring us together or divide us further?”

At its emotional core, however, Spielberg says the film is ultimately about empathy and shared understanding.

I think Disclosure Day is a story about empathy as an extraordinary resource, and how it needs to be shared globally, with the entire world, not hoarded for self-interest or reserved for those closest to us.”

An All-Star Cast Powers the Sci-Fi Thriller

Academy Award-nominated actress Emily Blunt leads the ensemble cast alongside Josh O’Connor and Oscar winner Colin Firth. Joining them are Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo, adding even more depth to the highly anticipated film.

    DisclosureDay 3

Combining emotional storytelling, timely themes, and Spielberg’s signature cinematic scale, Disclosure Day is poised to become one of the year’s most talked-about movie events.

Discover the truth when Disclosure Day opens in Philippine cinemas on June 10.

  • MOVIE REVIEW: For the Fans: A Review of ‘Mortal Kombat II’

MOVIE REVIEW: For the Fans: A Review of ‘Mortal Kombat II’

I don’t even remember the 2021 film Mortal Kombat, which Mortal Kombat II is the sequel. However, this latest release from the franchise leans so heavily into its video game lore and mode that you don’t need to have seen the first film (or even remember it) to follow the story. It’s not completely bonkers that it shifts gears into the level of camp; Mortal Kombat II is not taking itself too seriously, either. It knows its selling points: it has characters to present, action sequences to highlight, and brutal kills to show off that is reminiscent of the video game the whole IP is based on.

The story begins in the past, detailing how Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) and Kitara (Adeline Rudolph) joined the side of the Outworld, led by Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). This piece of history explains how Outworld conquered the realm of Edenia. A decade later, Outworld is after Earthrealm, and Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) gathers his champions to prepare for Mortal Kombat to protect the planet. His champions include returning characters Sonya (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), and Cole Young (Lewis Tan). They travel to Earth to recruit a new champion: washed-up action star Johnny Cage (Karl Urban). While the tournament will decide the fate of Earthrealm, but there are things happening underneath the surface that threaten to change the outcome of the game.

Mortal Kombat II is a fast-paced fantasy and action-adventure film that feels thin on story, largely because it works too hard to give every character a chance to have their moment. Kitara begins the story and has the character with the clearest goal, yet she lacks a true character arc. Those arcs belongs to Johnny Cage and Kitara’s bodyguard and friend, Jade (Tati Gabrielle). However, the narrative is crowded: Liu Kang gets his moment, Kano (Josh Lawson) is resurrected and he gets a lot of screen time because his character is so fun and there’s a lot of plot going on in Shao Kahn’s group involving Quan Chi (Damon Herriman) and Shang Tsung (Chi Han). Consequently, the film never really feels grounded; Johnny Cage’s character development is often glossed over with a punchline, while Jade’s story is the most developed but her character is relegated to a supporting cast.

And because this is Mortal Kombat, we see the return of Sub Zero/Bi Han (Joe Taslim) and Scorpion/Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada). Of course, they too have to have their moment.

Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion in “Mortal Kombat II”

Since the movie is really meant for entertainment and to deliver fan service, there’s quite a number of logical inconsistencies that I’m willing to forgive. However, what I’m expecting, though, is really good fight scenes which the film delivers inconsistently. I’m not that sure of Karl Urban’s ability to fight but his fight scenes are the ones that are the most heavily edited to try and hide the switching of a stunt double. Many of Rudolph’s fights (except the one with Johnny Cage) and that of Gabrielle were fun to watch but the real gem is the fight scene between Liu Kang and Kung Lao (Max Huang). It is fast, the choreography is stunning, the editing allows the viewer to still see the action, and it was dynamic without being overshadowed by the special effects. It’s this kind of fight scene that I hoped to see more of, yet there wasn’t a lot of it.

    Mortal Kombat II

Because the film felt like it was intended for fun and fan service, the finale dragged on for quite a bit as two different storylines. In the form of two different fight scenes, The constant cutting back and forth between these two battles extends the action beyond what feels comfortable. But as one-character bows out, another takes their place, and the scene extends some more. It gets a little out of hand. Ultimately, Mortal Kombat II is chaotic, messy, has a lot of story inconsistencies or easy plot fixes, and the fight scenes are not at all balanced out. However, for serious fans of the lore, there is still a lot here to enjoy. The audience at my screening were obviously fans, taking the time to ask questions about where this character showed up and if what’s mentioned is part of the official story canon or not.

    My Rating: 2.5 Stars

  • QCinema Awards ₱3.5 Million to Five Emerging Filipino Filmmakers for 2026 QCShorts

QCinema Awards ₱3.5 Million to Five Emerging Filipino Filmmakers for 2026 QCShorts

The QCinema International Film Festival has unveiled the five recipients of its 2026 QCShorts Production Grant, awarding a combined ₱3.5 million ($57,817) to promising Filipino filmmakers set to create bold and compelling short films.

Selected from a record-breaking pool of 395 submissions, this year’s projects reflect the growing diversity of Philippine cinema, featuring stories rooted in regional cultures, queer experiences, political realities, folklore, and personal identity.

According to QCinema artistic director and newly appointed QC Screen Commission executive director Ed Lejano, the selection process highlighted the increasing presence of regional filmmakers and genre-driven storytelling.

“What stands out, even when we were shortlisting, are the increasing number of films from the regions and works that are deeply rooted in genre,” says Ed Lejano, QCinema’s artistic director and the newly appointed executive director of the QC Screen Commission. “Many of the titles that stood out use filmmaking, narrative conventions, satire, and even myths as a way to make sense of the violence, extremism, absurdity, and gross injustice happening today.”

Five New Voices Receive QCShorts Support

    The 2026 QCShorts grantees are:

    • Carla Pulido Ocampo – Agsangit Laeng ti Al-alia (A Ghost Can Only Howl)

    • Rodiell Veloso – Run Shirley Run!
    • Clister Santos – Sana’y Nandito Ka

Jason Tan Liwag, QCinema’s head of short film programming, noted that this year’s selections tackle themes of division, belonging, and emotional distance.

“This new batch of shorts all examine widening rifts between the individual and the family, between our bodies and beliefs,” says Jason Tan Liwag, head of short film programming. “Whether it’s about distant wars, fissures within communities, or personal alienation, we are committed to holding space for stories that are deeply political, regional, and quintessentially Filipino.”

REP taps Nelsito Gomez to Direct Nonie Buencamino’s Musical Theater Comeback in Man of La Mancha

Repertory Philippines (REP) enlivens the local theater scene as it brings the inspiring and beloved story of literary hero Don Quixote to the stage in the much-anticipated production of the seminal classic Man of La Mancha.

    01 MLM

With a limited four-weekend run from June 5 to 28 at the REP Eastwood Theater, the 2026 staging of Man of La Mancha not only harks back to REP’s legacy but also offers a revitalized take for today’s theatergoers. The musical will be brought to life by young director Nelsito Gomez, known for his fresh, creative, and relevant (and mostly lauded) takes on the masterworks of literary pantheons, from Shakespeare to Goethe. With him at the helm, one can expect this Cervantine musical about one man’s refusal to give up his impossible dream to be even more impactful and meaningful to the new generation.

Fittingly, this REP staging stars 2025 Gawad Buhay Best Actor in a Play awardee Nonie Buencamino, who makes his grand comeback into musicals as Alonso Quijano / Don Quixote, a man on a dedicated mission to restore honor, justice, and beauty to a world tainted by cynicism and hatred. Buencamino is known for his versatility, having appeared in various films, television shows, and theater productions throughout his decades-long career.

“We are deeply honored to bring Man of La Mancha back to the REP stage—a production that remains very close to my heart as one of my all-time favorite musicals. In a moment when it’s easy to grow weary or guarded, Don Quixote invites us, in his quirky ‘quixotic’ manner, to hold fast to courage, imagination, and the possibility of something better. Guided by an extraordinary team led by Nelsito Gomez and Nonie Buencamino, we’ve shaped a production that feels both intimate and urgent, and I’m truly excited to share it with our audiences,” says Mindy Perez-Rubio, REP President and CEO. “This is a theater experience you simply have to see.”

    04 MLM

Considered as one of the world’s most popular musicals, Man of La Mancha is a soul-stirring and powerful musical experience featuring a fictionalized version of the famed writer Miguel de Cervantes, who is thrown into prison by the Spanish Inquisition and must defend himself against his fellow prisoners. As he takes the persona of Don Quixote through a play, the tale of imagination, chivalry, and heroism transforms and touches the people around him. It’s inspired by the Cervantes’ novel “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha,” often hailed as the “best novel of all time” and the “best and most central work in world literature.”

    05 MLM

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1965 and won five Tony Awards including Best Musical, with book by Dale Wasserman, music by Mitch Leigh, and lyrics by Joe Darion. Man of La Mancha is known for introducing the standard, “The Impossible Dream,” the principal song of the show that has become an anthem of hope. With a Spanish-infused score, the musical also features the timeless classics, “Dulcinea”, “I, Don Quixote,” and “I’m Only Thinking of Him”. Man of La Mancha is a favorite among REP audiences, having been previously staged in 1987 at the Insular Life Theater and in 2005 at Onstage Greenbelt.

    06 MLM

Acclaimed classical singer and actress Katrine Sunga plays Don Quixote’s muse Aldonza, while Marvin Ong, known for his lauded lead performance in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, plays the iconic Sancho Panza. Rounding out the stellar cast are Tarek El Tayech as Governor/Innkeeper, Alfredo Reyes as Duke/Carrasco, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante as Antonia, Sarah Facurias Housekeeper, Steven Hotchkiss as Padre, Julio Laforteza as Pedro/Male Dancer, Dippy Arceo as Jose, Jasper Jimenez as Juan/Barber, Ralph Oliva as Paco, Khalil Tambio as Anselmo, Liway Perez as Maria/Female Dancer, and Rafa Sumilong as Captain. JV Fulgencio joins the cast as the Male Swing and Aly Wijangco as the Female Swing.

  • A Modern Essential Perfected by UNIQLO: 20 Years of Bra Top Innovation for Today’s Women

A Modern Essential Perfected by UNIQLO: 20 Years of Bra Top Innovation for Today’s Women

For over 20 years, UNIQLO’s Bra Top has been shaped by a simple yet deeply considered idea: that clothing should support women, not just in how they look, but in how they live.

    1. Celebrating over 20 years UNIQLOs Bra Top is designed to support womens lives with comfort ease and simplicity

Created with women in mind, the Bra Top was made for women of all kinds: those constantly on the move, those balancing multiple roles, and those who simply want to feel at ease in what they wear. By bringing together a bra and a top into one seamless piece, UNIQLO introduced a quieter, more intuitive way of dressing, one that allows women to move through their day with greater ease.

Over time, this thoughtful simplicity has become something women return to instinctively. The built-in cup structure provides steady, reliable support while maintaining a natural shape. Subtle in feel yet essential in effect, it allows women to carry themselves with quiet confidence. It is this sense of effortlessness, of not having to think twice; that has made the Bra Top a constant across different stages of life.

As days shift from one moment to another, the Bra Top adapts in kind. Designed with all-around support that moves with the body, it meets women where they are, whether navigating long, active days or simply slowing down. It is less about structure alone and more about creating a sense of ease that feels personal and lived in.

2.Designed with all around support that moves with the body it meets women where they are—whether navigating long active days or simply slowing down

For over twenty years, the Bra Top has continued to evolve alongside the women who wear it. Today, it reflects a wide spectrum of styles, from essential everyday pieces to more refined, fashion-forward silhouettes, allowing women to choose what feels most like themselves.

Thoughtful sizing ensures that more women can experience that same balance of comfort and confidence, reinforcing the idea that it was never meant for just a few, but for many.

From the breathable lightness of AIRism Bra Tops to styles suited for more polished occasions, each piece carries forward the same intention set more than two decades ago: to make dressing feel simpler, more natural, and ultimately more supportive of real life.

This philosophy finds a meaningful setting at UNIQLO SM Mall of Asia as it celebrates the second anniversary of its redefined space—a place shaped by movement, connection, and everyday experiences. As one of the country’s most dynamic destinations, it reflects the very lives the Bra Top was designed for. Within this space, the piece becomes more than just an item of clothing, it becomes something women can rely on wherever the day takes them.

In celebration of this 20-year journey, customers are invited to visit the Bra Top display at UNIQLO SM Mall of Asia from May 9 to June 30, 2026 to rediscover how the Bra Top has evolved over time.

Guided by UNIQLO’s LifeWear philosophy, the Bra Top reflects clothing designed with empathy, proving that when something is thoughtfully made for women, it becomes not just something they wear, but something they can truly depend on.
