  • The King is Gone, Long Live the Black Panther: A Review of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is a movie about loss and grieving. The loss of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa feels, in the movie’s reality, like the loss of a certain sense of nobility and grace that lit up this corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wakanda is grieving. This movie is grieving and it is ambitious in how it takes all that grief and turns it into this epic movie about moving forward from loss, a movie about leaders and rulers of superpowered nations during this dark and turbulent era of human civilization.

Make no mistake, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ still continues its dialogue about imperialism and the threat of colonialism but this time pushes it forward about discussing the concept of retaliation.

Running at 161 minutes, almost three hours long, the film’s first two hours is an exploration of the fictional kingdom of Wakanda at a state of loss. T’Challa has passed and his mother Queen Ramonda (played with such a commanding presence by Angela Basset) has reclaimed the throne in the absence of a ruler. His sister Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) is dealing with her grief by turning towards her technology. As Queen, Ramonda must push back against other countries, who want access to Vibranium, the precious resource that has made Wakanda into the advanced nation that it is in that world. Shuri, on the other hand, must rationalize how all her intelligence and affinity to science were not able to save her brother’s life.

    SAD0900 TRL comp ILM v0019.1274
    Photo: Marvel Studios

In the middle of all of this, the search for Vibranium outside of Wakanda goes into full swing and what it uncovers is another nation altogether with access to the precious mineral, one that is just beneath the surface and equal to (or maybe even more powerful) than Wakanda in strength. This is the nation of Talocan, under the rule of Namor (played with great duality by Tenoch Huerta) and he has kept his underwater nation secret for hundreds of years and this sudden global interest in Vibranium has forced Namor’s hand.

In 161 minutes, the film must deal with the state of Wakanda without a Black Panther and the pressure from other nations to gain access to Vibranium, but it also introduces us to the enigmatic Namor and the nation of Talocan and how they deal with Wakanda, the only country that shares their fears and anxieties. The film also has to introduce a new character, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), a brilliant young scientist who is a parallel to Shuri’s story in every way, and Shuri’s own way of reconciling her loss.

    Black Panther Wakanda Forever 1
Photo: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer

What unfolds is an epic-scale story about rulers and superpowered nations and how the choices of one person can lead to the ruin of so many. As seen in the trailer, the film leads up to a battle (let me say this: it’s not just a battle, it’s a war) that shapes and molds the return of a new Black Panther and what it means to protect a powerful nation.

Pervading through every scene is a commentary on imperialist states like America and France, bringing to mind their imperialist history and the pressure that they (and other world leaders) are pressing on Ramonda, Wakanda, and inadvertently Talocan, the dialogue regarding colonialism returns. What are other nations to do in the face of such pressure?

    Black Panther Wakanda Forever 2
Photo: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer

This is not just a superhero movie. Just like the previous film before this sequel, this is an image of fighting back against colonial power (it’s no accident that Talocan, which was called Atlantis in the comics, was inspired and based on Meso-American culture; they speak the Mayan language and interpolate Meso-American design and culture) and it is also a character study. Shuri, Ramonda, M’Baku (Winston Duke, who does an amazing job of adding more layers into his character), Okoye (Danai Gurira, who is given enough screen time and narrative elements to add new dimensions to Okoye), and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o, whose presence adds a profound depth to the story) all must deal with their grief and use the superhero narrative as a means to channel that anger somewhere.

It’s when the film reverts back to its comic book genre that it slows down and unravels. There is a mighty battle scene at the end that feels like it is a necessary item on a checklist for MCU movies that can undermine the heaviness of the themes of the film. It would have worked better had the film been PG-13 (or even R-13) so that the violence can be justified by how much stronger it could amplify the geopolitical ramifications of these two nations coming to war.

    BPL1160 comp DDO v0237.1180 R2
    Photo: Marvel Studios

This is a dark film with dark themes and it could have really dug itself into that mold more (and there would have been an appropriate space for it) if it didn’t have to be so family-friendly.

Its ties to the MCU is what holds back Ryan Coogler’s vision and ambition of channeling the loss of such a figure like the fictional T’Challa (or the real-life Chadwick Boseman) into a commentary about how dark and greedy this world has become and how one moves forward from it.

Nevertheless, as MCU films go, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is another testimony that superhero films can, every now and then, feel important and relevant. It is proof that you can step out of the formula and still deliver something that is mainstream and enjoyable.

  • Asian Shorts Program @ QCinema 2022

Now a regular feature in QCinema, this specially-curated program showcases the most interesting new short films from the region, including two from the Philippines.

In exploring diverse cinematic approaches, the line-up of six shorts range from the fiction narrative to social critique and to experimental styles of filmmaking.

This section, curated by filmmaker Carlo Manatad, expands the notion of storytelling for the short film medium in its various possibilities.

    HHD OFFICIAL POSTER

Sundance Grand Prize winner, The Headhunter’s Daughter by Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan, tells about an Igorot who leaves her family behind to try her luck as a country singer.

Navigating through the Cordilleran highlands with only her horse and guitar, it is laden with imagery from the American frontier and colonial influences seeping through the film’s images.

Another Filipino filmmaker, Timmy Harn who competed in QCinema’s 2018 main competition with Dog Days, returns to the short form medium in this program.

    photo 2022 11 02 17 24 18

Papaya is an experimental work about a granddaughter who avenges the death of her father by summoning a dreadful visitor to free herself from her scheming grandfather.

Shot in 16mm, it premiered in Kinoskop, an analog festival in Belgrade, Serbia that focuses on alternative shorts shot on celluloid.

    Dancing Colors Poster Locarno

Indonesian filmmaker M. Reza Fahriyansyah’s fourth short is Dancing Colors, fresh from its recent Locarno premiere.

It focuses on a troubled teen who is made to undergo a bizarre ritual in a conservation Muslim town. Its amusing twist makes for a pointed statement about religious repression.

    FOUR NIGHTS POSTERB

Four Nights by Deepak Rauniyar is a short drama about a struggling couple trying to gain a foothold in New York, far away from their home in Nepal.

The husband is a filmmaker and the wife, an actor.  Together they face a difficult decision which calls many things into question. Part of Berlinale’s shorts competition this year, the story is based on the filmmaker’s actual experience as it addresses issues regarding immigration, race and class.

The last two titles in the program come from China, representing a sort of rebirth as international recognition is fast gaining for their recent short works.

Driven by a sense of freedom, Chinese short filmmakers have scored significant wins at recent major festivals as this comes when their feature films have seemed to decline internationally.

    Poster Lili Alone

In her debut, Lili Alone, Zou Jing’s somber drama tells the story of a poor young mother from Sichuan, who gets involved in a surrogate motherhood scheme in the big city, to help for her sick father’s medical treatment.

After it was awarded the Cannes Cine Discovery Prize last year, the triumph continued with another triumph a few months ago with another prize-winning short from China.

    TheWaterMurmurs poster

Capturing the 2022 Cannes Palme d’Or Best Film, Story Chen uses an apocalyptic premise in The Water Murmurs. It portrays Nian, who flees her hometown after an asteroid landing. As she searches for her childhood friend, the memories of the town start to become clearer in her mind.

QCinema is slated from November 17 – 26, 2022. It will be held at Gateway, Trinoma, Powerplant, Cinema 76, and SM North EDSA.

Details about in10City, QCinema’s 10th anniversary presentation will be available at qcinema.ph and updates are posted at its social media accounts – www.facebook.com/QCinemaPH, twitter.com/QCinemaPH, and www.instagram.com/qcinemaph.

  • Ortigas Malls kicks off holidays shopping with Greenhills Night Market 2022

Ortigas Malls kicked off its yearly Christmas tradition, the Greenhills Night Market at GStrip on November 4, 2022. The event was organized by Ortigas Malls to welcome the holiday season at Greenhills Mall, the ultimate destination for shopping, entertainment, and dining.

“Greenhills Night Market has always been synonymous with Christmas shopping and the opening signals the start of holiday preparations for everyone,” said James L. Candelaria, AVP, head of trade fairs & exhibits of Greenhills. “Generations of Filipinos grew up shopping at the Night Market with their parents and now with their own families.”

    Greenhills Night Market

With this year’s theme “Merry Moments,” the Greenhills Night Market is the place-to-be where families and friends can share festive experiences during the holiday season. Adding to the merry mood are the colorful parols that illuminate the Night Market and the rest of Greenhills to welcome the many holiday shoppers.

The opening ceremony was attended by San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora, who addressed guests, patrons, and sellers in his speech. He also explored the Night Market to check out the stalls and their wares. Ortigas Malls also spread Christmas cheer to children of Greenhills’ security maintenance and medical frontliners of Greenhills Mall by distributing gift packs as part of the program.

“Here in Greenhills, we are family, and that’s how we value one another. Nobody gets left behind and we all move forward,” Candelaria said.

One of the Night Market’s main attractions are the food stalls, where visitors can enjoy a wide variety of cuisines after a long day of shopping. From grilled food, filling rice meals, and drinks, among many others. Families and friends can enjoy their meals comfortably at the al fresco dining area in the venue.

Shoppers can also find a plethora of affordable products at the tiangge. It has an abundance of locally made fashion apparel, Christmas decors, toys, and so much more. It’s the ideal spot to complete their Christmas shopping.

    Greenhills Night Market 2

Kids are welcome to explore the Night Market as well. There will be exciting carnival rides where parents can accompany them. Late-night visitors can experience a party-like vibe while checking out stalls with live DJs playing lively music. To amp up the holiday fun and add more color to their evenings, visitors can watch fireworks displays on all Saturdays of December.

    Greenhills Night Market Large

Ortigas Malls is expecting a large volume of people to visit Greenhills and the Night Market during the holiday rush. But Candelaria assured the public that all participating merchants are fully vaccinated and following strict health protocols. Security officers are also patrolling the area to ensure the safety of shoppers and that everyone is observing proper health procedures at the Night Market. Although wearing of face masks outdoors and indoors is voluntary, visitors and mall goers are still encouraged to wear their face masks to ensure their safety.

“It’s time to make new Christmas memories and traditions at the Greenhills Night Market with your family this season, happy moments that  they will always remember and pass on to the next generation,” Candelaria said.

The Greenhills Night Market will run from November 4, 2022 to January 8, 2023, from 4pm onwards at GStrip Parking. Live DJ performances and kids’ carnival rides will be there to entertain visitors every night. Fireworks displays are scheduled on all Saturdays of December.
