  • REVIEW: Disney+’s new series ‘Moving’ is the best of two worlds: Kdrama and Western superhero shows

While there are a good number of Korean dramas that feature supernatural abilities or paranormal powers (‘Strong Girl Bong Soon,’ ‘While You Were Sleeping,’ ‘He is Psychometric,’ amongst others), this is the first Kdrama I’ve ever encountered that really leans in to the world of comic book superheroes in a Western way. Based off of the webtoon of the same name by Kangfull, ‘Moving’ is a 20-episode Kdrama about people with superpowers and a dark history that has driven them into hiding.

    01 3

Directed by Park Inje (Kingdom season 2) and written by the original webtoon creator Kangfull, the story of ‘Moving’ unfolds in an interesting way. It opens in the present day following the story of 2 teens – Kim Bongseok (Lee Jungha) and Jang Huisoo (Go Younjung) – who have powers and find themselves going to the same school. As they navigate senior year and confiding each other with their abilities, we also discover that their parents also have powers but are keeping theirs secret too.

    01 1 1 1

What first seems like a coming-of-age story of two kids with superpowers, begins to unravel as a complex story that involves governments, secret agents, and assassins. The story of the parents are a lot more complex than what the first few episodes show us and by the time we reach closer to the midway point, we discover that the story needs to fork into two timelines – the present and the past.

    01 2 1

‘Moving’ boasts of an expensive budget and incredible CGI work for a drama series. Within the first ten episodes, there are images and visuals of flying, of regeneration, of superhuman strength and speed, and effects involving electricity. The show is also relentless in its action and fight choreography. Director Park Inje is also quite adept at creating striking images of the characters using their powers and while it feels exciting when it’s shown in the context of a fight scene, it’s when he uses it in relation to the young kids’ experiences of everyday life that it really shines.

    MOV 101206 fin 1

There’s a great scene when Huisoo discovers Bongseok’s power of flight for the first time, it’s so elegantly done and it covers all the wonderful emotions that the two young actors can display. There’s another scene, also involving Bongseok’s flying abilities, of him cleaning a bathroom in the throes of young romance that makes a great visual.

    MOV 129116 1

This is what makes the show really shine. Yes, there are superpowers in it – and to the point where it feels like an MCU series – but that’s the easy stuff. The best parts is when it stays within the realm of Kdramas and work on their characters and their relationships. Bongseok’s and Huisoo’s relationship is a very special, wonderful little storyline that keeps everyone engaged. Then, playing counterpoint to each other, you have the Bongseok with his mom (Han Hyo Joo) and Huisoo and her dad (Ryu Seungryong). Bongseok and his mom is a tenuous relationship, with Han Hyo Joo’s Lee Mihyun as being overprotective and extra cautious. The tiredness and exhaustion of her character is explicit in every move she makes but the love is there, buried inside. It’s a wonderful performance that brings some very touching scenes. On the other hand, Huisoo and her father, Jang Juwon, have a more loving relationship – one that has both characters always walking on eggshells with each other. It’s so wonderfully played out that I cannot wait until the moment when the teens find out their parents have abilities.

    MOV 131868 1

This is why the show loses out on its strength as it gets closer to the midpoint. The first four or five episodes are working with multiple characters and weaves a tapestry of persons of interest. How they connect each other and how they relate to each other makes the show so good. By the sixth or seventh episode, they start to focus on one character’s backstory (usually a parent) and it takes the whole episode (sometimes two episodes) and I start to miss the present day storyline.

I understand that ‘Moving’ is building a world and is expanding it because it needs the space to move when all the characters come crashing into each other (by episode 10, they are still in each other’s periphery but have yet to come together) but it has made the episodes close to the midpoint feel dragging. Yes, we eventually see the histories of Jang Juwon and Lee Mihyun, but I’ve already invested in the friendship (and maybe even relationship) of Bongseok and Huisoo. There are also other characters like Lee Ganghoon (Kim Dohoon) and Chae Taehyun’s Jeon Gye-do and the assassin Frank, played by Ryu Seung-bum. Regardless, the first ten episodes of ‘Moving’ is proving to be an engaging new series that has the flavor of a Western/MCU type of superpowered show but with all the heart and the precision writing and character development of a Kdrama. It has a great cast and an intriguing, rich storyline with a lot of ground to cover. I won’t be surprised if the show ends in a cliff-hanger by the end of the 20th episode.

  • Director Kim Yong-hwa talks about his excellent cast in “The Moon”

Expressing satisfaction with the exceptional synergy among his lead actors – Sul Kyung Gu, Doh Kyung-soo and Kim Hee-ae – “The Moon” director said, “They are all such skilled actors that even if they were acting separately, their emotions, tone, and manner were perfectly synchronized, which surprised me.”

In the thrilling and emotional space movie, Korea’s first manned mission to the moon ends in a tragic disaster when an explosion occurs on board. Seven years later, a second human spaceflight is launched successfully but a strong solar wind causes it to malfunction. One astronaut Sun-woo (Doh) is left stranded in space. Facing another fatal catastrophe, the Naro Space Center turns to its former managing director Dr. Kim (Sul) to help bring Sun-woo back home safely. In the film, each of the three main characters is in a setting that is different and away from the others.

    The Moon Kim Hee ae
    Kim Hee-ae

Fortunately, according to the director, with the stellar performances of these talented actors, the audience can anticipate a chemistry that surpasses the distance of 384,000 kilometers between the Moon and the Earth. In The Moon, each character is separated by the Korean Naro Space Center (Sul), the vastness of space (Doh) and NASA in the United States (Kim), requiring the actors to convey their performances through communication and phone conversations without physically being in the same space. The director added that the actors approached the filming with emotions at a heightened level, allowing the audience to feel the powerful energy that carries the drama without getting exhausted.

The Moon, a gripping, emotional, epic-action, and one of Korea’s highly anticipated films of the year, also stars The World of the Married’s Kim Hee-ae. It opens exclusively in Philippine cinemas August 16. It is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Connect with the hashtag #TheMoonMoviePH

  • More things to look forward to in “Blue Beetle,” according to filmmakers

While we’re all excited to hear our very own Inka Magnaye voice the Scarab in the Philippine release of “Blue Beetle,” there are many other things to look forward to about the all-new Super Hero movie from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC. Read on to find out what “Blue Beetle” filmmakers think will get moviegoers even more excited!

    Focus on family

Says director Ángel Manuel Soto of the close-knit Mexican-American Reyes family at the center of the film, “In this origin story, the family – contrary to other superhero movies where the hero keeps the secret from everybody around him – the secret really happens in front of the family. So, Gareth [Dunnet-Alcocer, screenwriter] always said, ‘Good luck trying to hide a secret from your mom in a Latino household, they always know!’ And we kind of like embraced that, so this made for a very unique journey where the family is part of the adventure, not a group of people or an object of rescue, but on the contrary, an integral part of the construct of this superhero.”

    Blue Beetle 1

    The humor

“Its tone is… it has to be funny,” says Mexican-born screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer “I’ve never met a Mexican person that wasn’t funny, so there’s no way the movie wouldn’t be funny. But what kind of funny it is, is wonderful, and I think it’s really inspired by the tone of the early Blue Beetle comics, where you have a hero that’s fallible.”

    Fun with superpowers

Jaime Reyes’s experience as a new hero in a brand new suit is unique. “Can he fly? Yes. Is he strong? For sure. Are there big action sequences? Absolutely,” says producer John Rickard. “But it’s the special abilities of the suit, which are unlike anything else in the DCU, that make it so ridiculously cool, because it allows Blue Beetle endless superpowers. He’s literally a 20-something who has a suit that can create anything he can imagine. And so, what does this young kid do with these powers? He pulls from what he knows: pop culture. Things he knows in his everyday life.  Our action sequences in ‘Blue Beetle’ are definitely inspired by a lot of gamer combos, which makes it feel like a video game come to life. Those who know will know.”

An all-original city for a new Super Hero

In “Blue Beetle,” recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Maridueña) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.

    Blue Beetle 2 1

In the comics, Jaime Reyes and his family live in El Paso, Texas, but the studio thought it would be a better idea to create an entirely new setting – a new place unique to the world of Blue Beetle called Palmera City. “They thought it might make sense to give Jaime and Blue Beetle his own unique city, much like Superman has Metropolis, The Flash has Central City. We loved this idea,” says producer Zev Foreman. “It suddenly got brighter; it suddenly got more colorful. It suddenly got the idea of water and how it combines with this place. The idea of the different sides of a place like Miami, in terms of the people that live there, the wealth that’s there, other things. It provided so many awesome opportunities to create a really unique environment in a superhero genre. And, again, it starts to inform the sounds, the music, the feeling, the lighting, all of these things, and I think it was an amazing choice.”

“Blue Beetle” opens exclusively in cinemas August 16.

    About “Blue Beetle”

From Warner Bros. Pictures comes the feature film “Blue Beetle,” marking the DC Super Hero’s first time on the big screen. The film, directed by Angel Manuel Soto, stars Xolo Maridueña in the title role as well as his alter ego, Jaime Reyes.

Starring alongside Maridueña (“Cobra Kai”) are Adriana Barraza (“Rambo: Last Blood,” “Thor”), Damían Alcázar (“Narcos,” “Narcos: Mexico”), Elpidia Carrillo (“Mayans M.C.,” the “Predator” films), Bruna Marquezine (“Maldivas,” “God Save the King”), Raoul Max Trujillo (the “Sicario” films, “Mayans M.C.”), with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (“Monarch,” “Dead Man Walking”), and George Lopez (the “Rio and “Smurf” franchises). The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories,” “Hocus Pocus 2”) and Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”). Soto (“Charm City Kings,” “The Farm”) directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala”), based on characters from DC. John Rickard and Zev Foreman are producing, with Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Garrett Grant serving as executive producers.

A Warner Bros. Pictures Presentation, A Safran Company Production, “Blue Beetle,” in cinemas starting August 16, is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

  • Robinsons Land Unveils One of the World’s Tallest Art Installations at Bridgetowne

Bridgetowne, Robinsons Land’s premier destination estate, embraces the power of public art to
shape the cityscape and embarks on a visionary journey. The emerging estate will soon unveil
its masterpiece, “The Victor,” the first of many planned public art installations, serving as a
catalyst for the transformation of Bridgetowne into a thriving art hub, adding to the city’s allure
and creating a welcoming public space for residents and visitors alike.

    Bridgetown Thumb

THE VICTOR: AN ICON THAT INSPIRES

“The Victor” is a breathtaking art installation that defies expectations and captures the
indomitable spirit of the Filipino people. Rising proudly on the eastern portion of the sprawling
32-hectare Bridgetowne Destination Estate, this awe-inspiring structure pays homage to the
resilience and unwavering determination that resides within every Filipino.

    Picture1
The Victor igniting the Filipino winning spirit in Philippine flag colors.

In collaboration with renowned Fil-Am artist Jefrё Manuel-Figueras, Bridgetowne created a
towering masterpiece that is one of the world’s tallest art installation with lighting projection.
Weighing a hefty 330 tons (660,000 lbs) and standing at a staggering height of 60 meters or 20
storeys (55 meters for the statue itself and an additional 5 meters for the podium it rests upon),
“The Victor” commands attention. In fact, it surpasses the height of the iconic Statue of Liberty,
which measures only 46 meters from heel to torch. With its intricate design and perforated
stainless steel construction, this monumental artwork will undoubtedly become a must-see
attraction for both foreign tourists and locals alike.

“It’s destined to be the star of countless social media posts, an icon that captures the beating
heart of the city, very much like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe of Paris, Big Ben with
London, and the Colosseum with Rome,” says Mybelle V. Aragon-GoBio, RLC’s senior vice
president and general manager for Robinsons Destination Estates.

    Picture2
The Victor gracing the Pasig skyline at night

Inspired by the remarkable success story of Mr. John Gokongwei, Jr., “The Victor” embodies the
spirit of triumph and serves as a beacon of inspiration. From humble beginnings, Mr. Gokongwei,
Jr. emerged as an iconic and transformative figure in the industry, overcoming adversities,
achieving unparalleled success, making an enduring impact on his country. The masterpiece
serves as a testament to his journey of resilience, bridging connections, and igniting the
unwavering Filipino winning spirit. It stands to honor his legacy, inspiring all who encounter it to
carve their own paths to greatness and make a meaningful difference in the world.

“The Victor” embodies the essence of Filipino artistry, creativity, and innovation, seamlessly
blending art, architecture, and engineering into a harmonious fusion. Its all-conquering pose,
with a raised fist thrust in the air, is meant to inspire visitors. It pays tribute to Global Filipinos
who have achieved greatness and influence both within and beyond their homeland. These
individuals, whether they are legends, emerging talents, or everyday heroes, embody the fearless
pursuit of challenging the status quo, trailblazing new paths, and ignited the Filipino winning
    spirit.

    THE POWER OF PUBLIC ART

Bridgetowne, once the old site of a production plant and textile manufacturing hub, was
transformed from an industrial space into a livable and emerging hub of community, creativity
and commerce. Recognizing that art has the extraordinary ability to breathe new life into cities,
revitalizing public spaces and fostering a sense of community, Robinsons Land invested in the
integration of unique public art installations in its open spaces and opened doors to collaborate
    with Filipino artists.

    P1
A render of Bridgetowne, a premier destination estate by Robinsons Land

“We work with local artists to manifest our vision of an urban landscape that empowers
individuals to live, work, play, and find inspiration. Art breathes life into cities, infusing them with
culture, soul, and emotion. Just as with ‘The Victor,’ our aim is to inspire and unite people, spark
their imagination, and leave a lasting impression on those who see and experience it,” said
    Aragon-GoBio.

    P2
A render of Bridgetowne Destination Estate’s iconic bridge, set to be another landmark
    P3
A render showcasing the opulence of Opus Mall

According to Aragon-GoBio, this also makes their role as a real estate developer more fulfilling.
While real estate development traditionally focuses on constructing buildings and infrastructure,
integrating public art into developments adds an extra dimension of social and cultural
enrichment in the spaces they create, spaces that resonate with people on a deeper level,
    making their work more meaningful.

THE BRIDGE: WHERE ARTISTRY MEETS CONNECTIVITY

Visiting Bridgetowne to see “The Victor” offers the opportunity to appreciate another work of art
that gives the destination estate its name. Designed by the late National Artist Francisco “Bobby”
Mañosa, a visually stunning bridge spans 110 meters, connects the 9-hectare Quezon City side
(Bridgetowne West) of the development with the 23-hectare Pasig City side (Bridgetowne East).
With the passing of his father, Architect Gelo Mañosa, representing the family’s architectural firm
Mañosa & Co., completed the project.

Inspired by the ribbon depicted in the Bridgetowne logo, the bridge serves as a powerful symbol
of triumph at the finish line, embodying the spirit of achievement. Its design draws inspiration
from the elegant curvature of the ribbon, capturing the essence of reaching milestones and
accomplishing goals. The bridge stands as a visual representation of the determination and
    success that Bridgetowne fosters.

Passing over the Marikina River, the bridge has an expansive width of 25 meters, featuring four
lanes dedicated to vehicles with dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bikers. Serving as a vital
component of Bridgetowne’s infrastructure, the bridge seamlessly connects both vehicles and
pedestrians significantly reducing travel time from one point of Metro Manila to another.

A DESTINATION ESTATE WHERE WINNERS GO

Bridgetowne is a destination estate offering a multitude of life-enhancing amenities. The Opus
Mall, an upscale 5-level shopping, dining, and recreation destination, is slated to open this year.
The forthcoming Fili Hotel, by Robinsons Hotels and Resorts, the country’s first homegrown
Filipino 5-star hotel, will have 300 well-appointed rooms providing guests with luxurious
accommodations and signature Filipino hospitality and craftsmanship.

    P4
