REVIEW: 9 Works Theatrical’s revival of ‘Once on this Island’ takes a modern approach to the classic (and outdated) love story

I have been a fan of ‘Once on this Island’ since I first heard the soundtrack sometime in the early 90s. The musical, by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty is an adaptation of the 1985 novel ‘My Love, My Love’ or ‘The Peasant Girl’ by Rosa Guy, which is a reimagining of the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen but set in the Caribbean. The musical has won the Laurence Olivier award at the West End in 1995 and the Tony for Best Revival in 2018. The play, almost completely sung-through, boasts incredible music by a large array of loveable characters and a love story that can be quite problematic in the current time but is very much a throwback to the love story depicted in The Little Mermaid.

9 Works Theatrical’s production, on the direction of Robbie Guevarra, does an interesting turn on the musical emphasizing the craziness of the dated love story of the play. ‘Once on this Island’ is set in an island in the Caribbean. In the midst of a huge storm, the villagers tell a story about Ti Moune to calm a child. The story goes that Ti Moune was an orphan that the four gods – Asaka, Agwe, Erzulie, and Papa Ge – saved so that she can teach the island a lesson. The island is split into two – the peasants and the Grand Homme – and these two worlds never meet. Except Ti Moune longs for bigger things, having been told that the gods have saved her for something special. She sets her eyes on a Grand Homme, Daniel, who drives through the island in his Mercedes Benz. Having fallen in love with the young man, Ti Moune proclaims that she will marry him, and the gods laugh at her bravado. But Erzulie, the goddess of love, insists that love is stronger than the earth, water, and death, the domain of Asaka, Agwe, and Papa Ge. The gods then decide to use Ti Moune and Daniel to test Erzulie’s proposition: that love is stronger than death.

The play is Ti Moune’s journey from her village to the land of the Grand Homme to be able to marry Daniel and prove the power of love. Back in the 90s, the very ‘Little Mermaid’-ish storyline was innocent and idealistic. But in today’s sensibiliites it is a little foolish, if not outright mental. Guevarra leans into this, turning Ti Moune’s longing and passion into something rash and delirious. When Ti Moune and Daniel first meet, Daniel crashes his car during the rain and Ti Moune nurses him back to health. She sings a song about her love for him and Guevarra highlights this by doing a pretty neat trick by letting his Daniel appear on another part of the stage to sing their love duet despite the fact that the audience was left to believe that Daniel was on the bed with TI Moune when the scene starts. Guevarra uses his talented ensemble in multiple ways to weave his players in and out of scenes that keeps the energy on stage strong and vibrant.

He also directs the cast to play up the storytelling aspect of the play. Since the story is told through the villagers, when they perform the scenes of the Ti Moune story, there is a child-like wonder to the performances that keeps the play buoyant despite such themes as death and class division. Coming up to match this direction is its very abled cast with standout performances by Angela Ken (in the show I saw, Thea Astley alternates) as Ti Moune, Lorenz Martinez as Papa Ge, Garret Bolden as Agwe, Lani Ligot as Mama Euralie, Raul Montesa (for the show I saw, Noel Rayos alternate), and Krystal Kane (alternate Shanaia Gomez) as Andrea.

    OOTI 9WT OOTI 0908 730 21

Martinez is always reliable, but his Papa Ge is a lot more human than a previous show I saw 20 years ago and from clips I’ve caught on the internet. It’s not a caricature of a “sly demon” as his intro to the play suggests but a textured portrayal that brings in an air of freshness. Bolden has an impressive stage presence and has a magnificent voice that made his solo song ‘Rain’ a showstopper in the show I caught. For the little Andrea gets to do in the play, Kane was so memorable and was able to add a new layer to Andrea, not pushing her into the level of an antagonist (as some productions do). The scene stealers of the show, though, belong to Ligot and Montesa, who play the parents of Ti Moune. Their singing is imbued with so much heart and passion that they easily served as the show’s emotional anchor.

Ken is a wonderful discovery. She has spunk and presence and is unafraid to show the deliriousness of Ti Moune’s love for Daniel. The girl can sing, and she can demand for her spotlight on that stage, even when it is completely filled by that cast. I discovered this is still her first lead role and you can see the inexperience, sometimes relying on facial expressions that feel rehearsed or practiced but what she lacks in experience, she makes up for charisma and bravado. She’s an amazing talent and I can’t wait to see her grow.

Mio Infante’s set is both beautifully designed but can also create staging limitations for the production. There are curtains draped right above the center in a circle with strips of fabric falling down making it look like a gorgeous ethereal jellyfish when the lights hit it at a particular way and the stage itself has a thin loop that encircles the center. Actors can jump on the loop that is tilted towards the audience. It’s interesting because it allows the characters to go in and out of the center to direct us to the action, but it can also create an upper and lower level for certain scenes where height and leverage can come into play. Unfortunately, when the action is focused right in the middle, the circle can become limiting and when the whole ensemble is dancing together, it can sometimes feel too cluttered or busy. It makes the play feel smaller than it is.

But the musical direction of Daniel Bartolome keeps the score intact but adds extra percussion flourishes in certain songs – the dance-oriented ones, specifically – that adds an extra kick to the already-wonderful music of Stephen Flaherty. The singing by this ensemble is exceptional and so if the story isn’t to your liking, you can just enjoy the beautiful music.

There’s a lot to love in this beloved staging of the classic musical ‘Once on this Island.’ I appreciate the modern approaches it takes on some parts of the book that can feel dated, but it also manages to highlight the play’s stronger themes as it tackles class discrimination. This staging also manages to push a message that we make our own choices, regardless of what the gods (or whatever metaphor you decide the gods are representative of) has in store for you. For that alone, it’s reason why we must keep telling this story.

“I, The Executioner” Gains Global Acclaim as Official Selection at Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals

Director Ryoo Seung-wan’s latest action-packed crime thriller, “I, the Executioner,” has captivated international audiences by securing back-to-back invitations to two of the world’s most prestigious film festivals: the Cannes Film Festival in May and the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

An International Sensation: Cannes & Toronto Official Selection

As an official selection in the Midnight Screening section at the 77th Festival de Cannes, “I, the Executioner” made its grand world premiere, generating waves of excitement among global critics. Screen Daily hailed it as “the most flawless, astonishing action since John Wick: Chapter 4—a sequel that surpasses the original.” Meanwhile, the South China Morning Post called it “more intense action, more solid storytelling, and a rollercoaster experience.”

Other major publications like Reuters and The Hollywood Reporter praised Director Ryoo for his ability to blend “fresh action and relatable themes,” and The Hollywood Reporter lauded his direction as a combination of “entertaining action with sharp psychological and social exploration.” Cinemateaser chimed in, calling it “a sequel that does not disappoint, arriving nearly 10 years after the commercially successful ‘Veteran.’”

Director Ryoo, who last attended Cannes 19 years ago with Crying Fist, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition, saying, “It took 50 years to get here [the Lumière Theatre]. It’s truly an honor and a meaningful moment.” His sentiment was echoed by Cannes festival director Thierry Frémaux, who remarked that the film is “even more impressive on the big screen,” only heightening anticipation among fans.

Meanwhile, “I, the Executioner” has also been chosen for the Special Presentations section at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which runs from September 5 to 15. Ryoo is no stranger to TIFF, having been featured in its Gala Presentation in 2023 with Smugglers and the Vanguard section in 2015 with Veteran. The film’s selection for these major festivals showcases its broad appeal and artistic impact, solidifying its position as a global cinematic powerhouse.

A Gripping Plot: Detective vs. Killer in a Race Against Time

In “I, the Executioner,” veteran Detective Seo Do-cheol, played by Hwang Jung-min, leads his Major Crimes Investigation Division as they track dangerous criminals around the clock. When the murder of a professor points to a series of unsolved cases, fears of a serial killer spread across the country. To make matters worse, the killer teases authorities by releasing online teasers of their next targets, pushing the city into chaos.

In an effort to catch the elusive murderer, the team brings in rookie officer Park Sun-woo, played by D.P. star Jung Hae-in. Sun-woo’s idealism and fresh perspective clash with Seo Do-cheol’s hardened approach, setting the stage for explosive twists and turns as they race against time to prevent further tragedy.

  • Sinag Maynila Review: the dark, brutal coming-of-age story that is ‘The Gospel of the Beast’

Sinag Maynila Review: the dark, brutal coming-of-age story that is ‘The Gospel of the Beast’

There is a raw, almost unfiltered texture to both the narrative and the imagery of writer and director Sheron Dayoc’s Sinag Maynila feature ‘The Gospel of the Beast’ (with additional writing by Jericho Aguado). The film pulls no punches about a teenager who finds himself with very little options after a fit of rage turns him into an accidental murderer. Mateo works at a butchery, helping slaughter pigs for selling. The opening scene has our lead, played by the arresting Jansen Magpusao of ‘John Denver Trending,’ preparing the slaughtered pigs and washing off the blood from the slaughterhouse floor. It’s a foreshadowing of the kind of violence that will unfold in the film.

He works part-time in the slaughterhouse to help out his aunt who has taken him and his younger siblings in as his father goes missing. In school, he is bullied but Mateo fights back; not a victim and there’s a rage inside of him that you can see is fighting to get free. When one bully goes too far, Mateo retaliates in the heat of rage and kills his schoolmate. Without witnesses, he is free to make an escape, and his only recourse is to go with his uncle, Berto (Ronnie Lazaro). Berto brings Mateo along to an abandoned villa with a gang of less than savory individuals. Here, Mateo discovers that his uncle robs, tortures, and kills people. Unwittingly, Mateo has joined a gang, working for a man everyone calls “boss” who appears very briefly, it so quick that the camera barely manages to capture his face, and we know nothing about him except that he’s dressed far better than Berto and his crew. Is it political? Is it a crime boss? Mateo doesn’t know so the audience doesn’t know because the film is so focused on Mateo’s interior world.

The Gospel of the Beast 1
Captured from YouTube: The Gospel of the Beast Trailer

What’s incredible about ‘The Gospel of the Beast’ is Dayoc’s sheer focus on making this Mateo’s story. Possibly 70% of the film are tight close-up shots of Magpusao’s beautiful face that hides nothing: Mateo’s fear, anxiety, guilt, curiosity, and rage are all there for us to observe and empathize with. There’s so much Mateo doesn’t know and, oftentimes, doesn’t want to know so these concepts are left at the periphery hinting at a larger, darker world. What we do witness is Mateo’s complex coming-of-age story as he desperately tries to hold on to his youth and humanity through adopting a dog or bonding with another gang member his age, Gudo, portrayed with such warmth and realism by John Renz Javier. At the same time, we are also witnessing Mateo’s growth into a man, the inner rage in him finding a space amongst the tough gang members in Berto’s group, that he is quicker now to lash out and realise the beast inside of him even if his young teenage body isn’t yet strong enough to match his fire, especially against Berto’s team who are older and much more used to violence.

The Gospel of the Beast 2
Captured from YouTube: The Gospel of the Beast Trailer

The film is a character study of the ways by which the underprivileged youth have very little options available to them when things go wrong and without real parental supervision or community support. How easily he is seduced by his uncle Berto’s manipulations, wonderfully portrayed by Ronnie Lazaro, who can be in equal parts loving and nurturing and then cold and brutal. It’s the dynamic of Lazaro and Magpusao that really gives the movie it’s emotional weight.

    The Gospel of the Beast

‘The Gospel of the Beast’ is an arresting film, one that seeks to disturb you while playing out this violent world in a very human setting. The film is rife with symbolism of being captive, or held in prison by the way it organically weaves in aquariums or brings out the image of Mateo’s adopted dog’s leash. The animals here are bound to their owners. Mateo may run free in the forested villa where he resides, but he does not have the liberty to set his own path.

This is a dark tale that is violent and brutal and unforgiving, but it is a necessary piece that needs to be seen.

  • Chookiat “Matthew” Sakveerakul Unveils His Most Ambitious Sci-Fi Masterpiece: “Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide”

Chookiat “Matthew” Sakveerakul Unveils His Most Ambitious Sci-Fi Masterpiece: “Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide”

Renowned Thai filmmaker Chookiat “Matthew” Sakveerakul marks a major milestone in his illustrious 20-year career with his latest sci-fi epic, Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide. Known for his masterful storytelling, Sakveerakul ventures into uncharted territory, presenting a film that combines thought-provoking sci-fi elements with Thai cultural and historical nuances.

A Director’s Vision: Exploring the Boundaries of Reality

In Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide, Sakveerakul delves into the nature of existence itself. “Our time and our daily life—do they really exist? Are we human beings, flesh and blood, biological masses or in fact reflections of something? These thoughts have been inspiring me for a long time and I’ve been looking for an opportunity to turn them into a film,” he muses. This existential question is at the heart of his inspiration for the film, which reflects his passion for blending deep philosophical inquiry with cinematic storytelling.

Having built a reputation with films like the 2007 romantic drama The Love of Siam—a film that swept Thai cinema awards—Sakveerakul now takes a bold leap into the realm of science fiction. “I’ve always loved sci-fi. The mysteries of the universe, different dimensions, and space fascinate me just as much as ghost stories,” the director shares, setting the stage for his latest creation.

    Taklee min

The Genesis of “Taklee”: Blurring History and Sci-Fi

Sakveerakul crafted an intricate universe for Taklee Genesis, inspired by real-world speculations. “In the film, the ‘Taklee Genesis’ is an American experiment project during the Vietnam War. The name ‘Taklee’ is because the Taklee district is where the largest US base in Southeast Asia was at the time. There were others too like the ones in Sattahip district and Udon Thani province. I think for such a large base as that in Taklee there must be something else. Recently, there have been many speculations about Taklee’s secrets—for example, extra-terrestrials lived there. Hey, people have talked about these. Check YouTube.”

A Stellar Cast: Bringing the Story to Life

The casting for Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative. With Paula Taylor, Peter Corp Dyrendal, and Wanarat Ratsameerat leading the ensemble, Sakveerakul couldn’t be more pleased. “I worked with Paula and Peter a few years ago. I want Paula to perform in a film because she has a strong cinematic charisma and was a symbol of rom-com in a certain period. She’s also adept and effortlessly sympathetic.”

Peter Corp Dyrendal, another significant figure in the cast, also brought a wealth of knowledge to the project. “Peter also did some research for more background information. He even corrected my mistakes, saying, ‘Matthew, it’s not a million years ago: it’s actually 75-76 million.’ Well, he also made corrections of some details in the script. So nice of him! He’s as geeky as me: he understood everything in the script. I was very surprised how he got it all: he’s also interested in this kind of thing.”

    paula peter

    Pushing Thai Cinema Forward

For Sakveerakul, Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide is more than just another film—it’s a game-changer for Thai cinema. “It’s the kind of project I don’t know if I’d ever have a chance to work on again. I realized it’s not easy when I was doing it. It’s another milestone for Thai films. Who else would be courageous and crazy enough to support me to do it? I’m all for it but I wouldn’t call it the acme of my career. I’d rather it be a door which opens opportunities for my more ambitious projects in the future and for those who love sci-fi and challenging film projects to further develop themselves.” the director explains.

    A Must-See Cinematic Experience

Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide promises an interstellar adventure that blends historical intrigue, philosophical musings, and high-stakes drama. Distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Discovery company, the film is set to hit theaters starting September 18.

  • Two families turn ‘Dreams to Reality’ at ARTablado

Two families turn ‘Dreams to Reality’ at ARTablado

Two years ago, artists and friends Brando Limon Bati and Adler Llagas had a two-man show at ARTablado Robinsons Antipolo.

ARTablado, a Robinsons Land initiative launched in 2020, has been supporting talented Filipino artists by providing them with venues so they can showcase their art and reach a bigger audience. You can find ARTablado, a portmanteau of the words “art” and “entablado” (stage), at Robinsons Antipolo, Robinsons Galleria, Summit Ridge Tagaytay and Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality Bonding Into Nature by Adler Llagas

This month, Brando and Adler return to Robinsons Antipolo not for a two-man show but for an exhibit with their families. Their wives and daughters are artists as well and now, they’ve also joined the ARTablado family.

“Dreams to Reality,” which runs until September 15, is an art exhibit that celebrates the creativity and connections of the two intertwined families. The unique show brings together the artistic visions of two close friends and their families, who are united by their shared passion for art.

“Dreams to Reality” is a testament to the bonds that tie us together. Through their diverse styles and stories, the artists explore themes of family, friendship, and creativity, offering a glimpse into the shared experiences that shape their work.

At the heart of the exhibit are the fathers, Brando and Adler, who are both accomplished artists. The two, who have supported their families with their art, now serve as mentors for their wives and daughters.

Brando, who has been painting since 1982, is a Tanay-based artist known for painting figures and still life using oil, pastel, pencil color and watercolor. His work has received recognition and awards and has been exhibited all over the country and abroad.

Adler, from Baras, Rizal, is a self-taught landscape artist who has been participating in solo and group exhibitions in the Philippines and abroad since 1996. He was recently commissioned by the Church of the Latter-day Saints to do two mural-sized paintings.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality Love Birds by Aicel Llagas

In the early days of Adler’s and Brando’s artistic careers, their wives Lucia Llagas and Teresa Demeterio Bati doted on them and supported them in different ways—from making them coffee and cleaning their studio and brushes to taking care of the kids while their husbands were busy painting.

The husbands and wives also worked together in overcoming financial challenges. Teresa said, “I had a small business and would find other ways in case no paintings were sold so I could help my husband with our daily needs.” She also recalls going with Brando to deliver paintings he had sold.

Inspired by her husband, Teresa had actually started painting using watercolor in 1997 but put it on hold to focus on working and her business. Last year, upon the encouragement of Brando, she returned to her love for painting, filling canvases with bouquets of flowers done in acrylic. She has previously participated in a group show called “Dreams” and her work has been purchased by art collectors. Her artworks always remind her to be like flowers: “Bloom. But at the perfect time.”

Teresa is grateful for how supportive her husband has been throughout her art journey. “He always has a canvas ready for me,” she said.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality The Bugs by Candys Bati Fulgado

Though she’s had experience in export commercial painting when she was younger, it was also Lucia Llagas’ husband who influenced her art journey. “I decided to start painting because I’ve always watched him working in the art industry, and he inspired me.”

Lucia finds relaxation and happiness in painting. “Dreams to Reality” is her second exhibit.

Brando and Teresa’s daughter Candys Bati Fulgado and Adler and Lucia’s daughter Aicel Lacerna Llagas were also inspired by their fathers to go into art.

Candys discovered her passion for art and painting as a young girl, after witnessing her father working. In 2020, her father encouraged her to paint again and she did, using acrylic on canvas. Seeing her father and mother both paint continues to inspire her. Like her mother, she loves painting flowers—spring flowers, in particular, as she sees them as symbols of new beginnings, renewal, and hope.

She is proud to have parents who are both visual artists.

Brando hopes his daughter has learned from witnessing his perseverance in his art. He wants to tell her, “Keep going, no one can take your talent away from you.”

Aicel, the second child of Adler and Lucia, also adores flowers and has decided to make them the focus of her paintings. Aicel had grown up watching her father work but, she said, “I wasn’t initially all that interested in painting.”

That changed while she was stuck at home during the pandemic. She asked her father if she could give painting a try. “He said that I could, but that I should start with a pencil… I decided to sketch flowers as my theme, and I do so every day until it’s dawn.”

Aicel’s father Adler continues to be her biggest inspiration and motivator.  Aicel, who has already participated in several exhibits, is grateful to her parents for their unwavering support for her passion. “It feels good. Painting is a way for us to bond. It’s quality time for us.”

“I’m so glad that we now also get to paint together and even have exhibits together. Art really brings us together,” said Adler about his wife and daughter.

Brando is happy to see his wife and daughter painting as well. He said that their exhibit is called “Dreams to Reality” because that’s exactly what it is—a dream turned into reality. “A lot of artists dream about exhibiting with their families but it doesn’t usually happen,” he said.

“What started as a dream is now a reality. It’s so rare for an artist to have family members who are also as passionate about painting,” said Adler.

For the Batis and the Llagases, art is a family affair.

“Dreams to Reality” runs until September 15 at ARTablado Upper Ground Floor, Main Mall, Robinsons Antipolo.

  • “Coraline” Returns in Stunning Remastered 3D Edition Exclusively at Robinsons Movieworld

“Coraline” Returns in Stunning Remastered 3D Edition Exclusively at Robinsons Movieworld

Get ready to step back into a world of wonder and suspense as the timeless stop-motion masterpiece Coraline returns to the big screen! Exclusively available at Robinsons Movieworld from September 18 to 30, the 2009 classic has been remastered in 3D, giving fans an immersive cinematic experience like never before.

A Journey Through the Fantastical World of Coraline

Originally released in 2009 and directed by Henry Selick, Coraline is based on the novella by Neil Gaiman and continues to captivate audiences with its dark, imaginative storytelling. The film follows Coraline, a young girl voiced by Dakota Fanning, who uncovers a secret door in her new home that leads to an alternate reality—a place that at first seems like a dream come true but quickly transforms into a nightmarish trap.

Facing dangers from this “other” world, including her sinister button-eyed alternate parents, Coraline must summon all her courage and wit to save her family and escape back to reality. Themes of self-discovery, family, and the temptation of escapism resonate deeply throughout the story, making it a fan favorite for both children and adults.

From Gaiman’s Novella to a Cinematic Triumph

Coraline was Laika’s first feature film, produced under the guidance of founders Phil Knight, his son Travis Knight, and Will Vinton. Despite skepticism about the success of stop-motion animation in an industry dominated by CGI, Coraline broke the mold, becoming a critical and financial hit. Directed and adapted by Henry Selick, the visionary behind The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, Coraline brought an unparalleled artistic style to the screen.

The film’s visual aesthetic owes much to Japanese illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi, whose concept art shaped the whimsical yet eerie world Coraline inhabits. Complementing this was the haunting score by Bruno Coulais, which used unconventional sounds to heighten the movie’s tension and fantasy.

Featuring a stellar cast that includes Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Keith David, and Ian McShane, Coraline became a beloved classic that grossed $16.85 million in its opening weekend. Fast forward to its 2023 re-release, and the magic lives on—its global box office earnings now surpass $29 million, reaffirming its status as a cinematic gem.

    Celebrating Coraline’s 15th Anniversary in 3D

In honor of the film’s 15th anniversary, Laika has unveiled a remastered 3D version of Coraline, giving a new generation of moviegoers and longtime fans the chance to experience the movie in an even more immersive way. Released in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing, the 3D version first debuted in the U.S. in August 2023, grossing $12.5 million in just four days. Now, it’s time for the Philippines to enjoy this visual treat, exclusively at Robinsons Movieworld!

  • “Transformers One”: Star-Studded Cast Brings Epic Origin Story to Life, In Cinemas September 18

“Transformers One”: Star-Studded Cast Brings Epic Origin Story to Life, In Cinemas September 18

Transformers fans, get ready! The origin story you’ve been waiting for is finally here – “Transformers One.”

    T1 FP 107

“We’re Transformers! We are Transformers!” an enthusiastic B-127 shouts in Transformers One, the first fully CG-animated Transformers movie. Voiced by comedian Keegan-Michael Key, B-127 (aka Bumblebee) comes alive like never before, and Key is thrilled to be part of the magic.

    Giving Bumblebee a Voice

Bumblebee has long been a fan favorite, yet his character had never truly spoken. For Key, this was an incredible opportunity. “I really enjoyed being able to give Bumblebee a voice. Over the last few movies he speaks through the radio inside the Volkswagen, which I thought was so cool,” says Key. “But now we get to imbue him with personality through his voice and I was really honored that I got the opportunity to do that.”

    No Humans, Just Transformers

Brian Tyree Henry, who voices D-16/Megatron, brings a fresh take on one of cinema’s most iconic villains. “What I really like about this one is that it is truly the beginning. And we got all the humans out of the way,” he says. “We start on Cybertron, which is where they originate, which is their home. Get the humans out of there, humans complicate stuff. We want to see where they started. We want to see what Cybertron looked like. This is the way to do it.” For Henry, the absence of human characters brings the focus back to what makes the Transformers universe so compelling—the rich, emotional arcs of its robotic heroes and villains.

A Fresh Spin on the Franchise

For Scarlett Johansson, who voices Elita-1, being a part of Transformers One was an absolute joy. “I loved the script. It, like, ignites the kid in me, and so I think parents would appreciate that,” says Johansson. “But it’s also just really fun. A new generation is going to get to experience Transformers in a whole new way. It’s going to be awesome.”

    The Epic Origin Story

Transformers One tells the untold origin story of the two characters who would become sworn enemies: Optimus Prime and Megatron. At one time, they were close allies, bonded like brothers, but events would unfold that would forever alter their destinies—and the fate of Cybertron. Voicing the young Optimus Prime, known as Orion Pax, is none other than Chris Hemsworth. The star-studded cast also includes Steve Buscemi as Starscream, Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, and Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime.

This exciting chapter in the Transformers universe will showcase the deep bond between Optimus Prime and Megatron before their rivalry shattered the future of Cybertron.
