  • Two families turn ‘Dreams to Reality’ at ARTablado

Two families turn ‘Dreams to Reality’ at ARTablado

Two years ago, artists and friends Brando Limon Bati and Adler Llagas had a two-man show at ARTablado Robinsons Antipolo.

ARTablado, a Robinsons Land initiative launched in 2020, has been supporting talented Filipino artists by providing them with venues so they can showcase their art and reach a bigger audience. You can find ARTablado, a portmanteau of the words “art” and “entablado” (stage), at Robinsons Antipolo, Robinsons Galleria, Summit Ridge Tagaytay and Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality Bonding Into Nature by Adler Llagas

This month, Brando and Adler return to Robinsons Antipolo not for a two-man show but for an exhibit with their families. Their wives and daughters are artists as well and now, they’ve also joined the ARTablado family.

“Dreams to Reality,” which runs until September 15, is an art exhibit that celebrates the creativity and connections of the two intertwined families. The unique show brings together the artistic visions of two close friends and their families, who are united by their shared passion for art.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality Floras Series by Lucia Llagas

“Dreams to Reality” is a testament to the bonds that tie us together. Through their diverse styles and stories, the artists explore themes of family, friendship, and creativity, offering a glimpse into the shared experiences that shape their work.

At the heart of the exhibit are the fathers, Brando and Adler, who are both accomplished artists. The two, who have supported their families with their art, now serve as mentors for their wives and daughters.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality Golden Basket Series by Teresa Bati

Brando, who has been painting since 1982, is a Tanay-based artist known for painting figures and still life using oil, pastel, pencil color and watercolor. His work has received recognition and awards and has been exhibited all over the country and abroad.

Adler, from Baras, Rizal, is a self-taught landscape artist who has been participating in solo and group exhibitions in the Philippines and abroad since 1996. He was recently commissioned by the Church of the Latter-day Saints to do two mural-sized paintings.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality Love Birds by Aicel Llagas

In the early days of Adler’s and Brando’s artistic careers, their wives Lucia Llagas and Teresa Demeterio Bati doted on them and supported them in different ways—from making them coffee and cleaning their studio and brushes to taking care of the kids while their husbands were busy painting.

The husbands and wives also worked together in overcoming financial challenges. Teresa said, “I had a small business and would find other ways in case no paintings were sold so I could help my husband with our daily needs.” She also recalls going with Brando to deliver paintings he had sold.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality The Bridge by Brando Bati

Inspired by her husband, Teresa had actually started painting using watercolor in 1997 but put it on hold to focus on working and her business. Last year, upon the encouragement of Brando, she returned to her love for painting, filling canvases with bouquets of flowers done in acrylic. She has previously participated in a group show called “Dreams” and her work has been purchased by art collectors. Her artworks always remind her to be like flowers: “Bloom. But at the perfect time.”

Teresa is grateful for how supportive her husband has been throughout her art journey. “He always has a canvas ready for me,” she said.

PR ARTablado Presents Dreams to Reality The Bugs by Candys Bati Fulgado

Though she’s had experience in export commercial painting when she was younger, it was also Lucia Llagas’ husband who influenced her art journey. “I decided to start painting because I’ve always watched him working in the art industry, and he inspired me.”

Lucia finds relaxation and happiness in painting. “Dreams to Reality” is her second exhibit.

Brando and Teresa’s daughter Candys Bati Fulgado and Adler and Lucia’s daughter Aicel Lacerna Llagas were also inspired by their fathers to go into art.

Candys discovered her passion for art and painting as a young girl, after witnessing her father working. In 2020, her father encouraged her to paint again and she did, using acrylic on canvas. Seeing her father and mother both paint continues to inspire her. Like her mother, she loves painting flowers—spring flowers, in particular, as she sees them as symbols of new beginnings, renewal, and hope.

She is proud to have parents who are both visual artists.

Brando hopes his daughter has learned from witnessing his perseverance in his art. He wants to tell her, “Keep going, no one can take your talent away from you.”

Aicel, the second child of Adler and Lucia, also adores flowers and has decided to make them the focus of her paintings. Aicel had grown up watching her father work but, she said, “I wasn’t initially all that interested in painting.”

That changed while she was stuck at home during the pandemic. She asked her father if she could give painting a try. “He said that I could, but that I should start with a pencil… I decided to sketch flowers as my theme, and I do so every day until it’s dawn.”

Aicel’s father Adler continues to be her biggest inspiration and motivator.  Aicel, who has already participated in several exhibits, is grateful to her parents for their unwavering support for her passion. “It feels good. Painting is a way for us to bond. It’s quality time for us.”

“I’m so glad that we now also get to paint together and even have exhibits together. Art really brings us together,” said Adler about his wife and daughter.

Brando is happy to see his wife and daughter painting as well. He said that their exhibit is called “Dreams to Reality” because that’s exactly what it is—a dream turned into reality. “A lot of artists dream about exhibiting with their families but it doesn’t usually happen,” he said.

“What started as a dream is now a reality. It’s so rare for an artist to have family members who are also as passionate about painting,” said Adler.

For the Batis and the Llagases, art is a family affair.

“Dreams to Reality” runs until September 15 at ARTablado Upper Ground Floor, Main Mall, Robinsons Antipolo.

  • “Coraline” Returns in Stunning Remastered 3D Edition Exclusively at Robinsons Movieworld

“Coraline” Returns in Stunning Remastered 3D Edition Exclusively at Robinsons Movieworld

Get ready to step back into a world of wonder and suspense as the timeless stop-motion masterpiece Coraline returns to the big screen! Exclusively available at Robinsons Movieworld from September 18 to 30, the 2009 classic has been remastered in 3D, giving fans an immersive cinematic experience like never before.

A Journey Through the Fantastical World of Coraline

Originally released in 2009 and directed by Henry Selick, Coraline is based on the novella by Neil Gaiman and continues to captivate audiences with its dark, imaginative storytelling. The film follows Coraline, a young girl voiced by Dakota Fanning, who uncovers a secret door in her new home that leads to an alternate reality—a place that at first seems like a dream come true but quickly transforms into a nightmarish trap.

Facing dangers from this “other” world, including her sinister button-eyed alternate parents, Coraline must summon all her courage and wit to save her family and escape back to reality. Themes of self-discovery, family, and the temptation of escapism resonate deeply throughout the story, making it a fan favorite for both children and adults.

    1 3

From Gaiman’s Novella to a Cinematic Triumph

Coraline was Laika’s first feature film, produced under the guidance of founders Phil Knight, his son Travis Knight, and Will Vinton. Despite skepticism about the success of stop-motion animation in an industry dominated by CGI, Coraline broke the mold, becoming a critical and financial hit. Directed and adapted by Henry Selick, the visionary behind The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, Coraline brought an unparalleled artistic style to the screen.

The film’s visual aesthetic owes much to Japanese illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi, whose concept art shaped the whimsical yet eerie world Coraline inhabits. Complementing this was the haunting score by Bruno Coulais, which used unconventional sounds to heighten the movie’s tension and fantasy.

Featuring a stellar cast that includes Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Keith David, and Ian McShane, Coraline became a beloved classic that grossed $16.85 million in its opening weekend. Fast forward to its 2023 re-release, and the magic lives on—its global box office earnings now surpass $29 million, reaffirming its status as a cinematic gem.

    Celebrating Coraline’s 15th Anniversary in 3D

Released in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing, the 3D version first debuted in the U.S. in August 2023, grossing $12.5 million in just four days. Now, it’s time for the Philippines to enjoy this visual treat, exclusively at Robinsons Movieworld!

  • “Transformers One”: Star-Studded Cast Brings Epic Origin Story to Life, In Cinemas September 18

“Transformers One”: Star-Studded Cast Brings Epic Origin Story to Life, In Cinemas September 18

Transformers fans, get ready! The origin story you’ve been waiting for is finally here – “Transformers One.”

    T1 FP 107

“We’re Transformers! We are Transformers!” an enthusiastic B-127 shouts in Transformers One, the first fully CG-animated Transformers movie. Voiced by comedian Keegan-Michael Key, B-127 (aka Bumblebee) comes alive like never before, and Key is thrilled to be part of the magic.

    Giving Bumblebee a Voice

Bumblebee has long been a fan favorite, yet his character had never truly spoken. For Key, this was an incredible opportunity. “I really enjoyed being able to give Bumblebee a voice. Over the last few movies he speaks through the radio inside the Volkswagen, which I thought was so cool,” says Key. “But now we get to imbue him with personality through his voice and I was really honored that I got the opportunity to do that.”

    No Humans, Just Transformers

Brian Tyree Henry, who voices D-16/Megatron, brings a fresh take on one of cinema’s most iconic villains. “What I really like about this one is that it is truly the beginning. And we got all the humans out of the way,” he says. “We start on Cybertron, which is where they originate, which is their home. Get the humans out of there, humans complicate stuff. We want to see where they started. We want to see what Cybertron looked like. This is the way to do it.” For Henry, the absence of human characters brings the focus back to what makes the Transformers universe so compelling—the rich, emotional arcs of its robotic heroes and villains.

A Fresh Spin on the Franchise

For Scarlett Johansson, who voices Elita-1, being a part of Transformers One was an absolute joy. “I loved the script. It, like, ignites the kid in me, and so I think parents would appreciate that,” says Johansson. “But it’s also just really fun. A new generation is going to get to experience Transformers in a whole new way. It’s going to be awesome.”

    The Epic Origin Story

Transformers One tells the untold origin story of the two characters who would become sworn enemies: Optimus Prime and Megatron. At one time, they were close allies, bonded like brothers, but events would unfold that would forever alter their destinies—and the fate of Cybertron. Voicing the young Optimus Prime, known as Orion Pax, is none other than Chris Hemsworth. The star-studded cast also includes Steve Buscemi as Starscream, Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, and Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime.

This exciting chapter in the Transformers universe will showcase the deep bond between Optimus Prime and Megatron before their rivalry shattered the future of Cybertron.

    In Philippine Cinemas September 18!

Distributed in the Philippines by Paramount Pictures through Columbia Pictures, Transformers One hits cinemas on September 18. Don’t miss your chance to witness the epic origin of Optimus Prime and Megatron!

  • REVIEW: The ‘Rings of Power season 2’ is a clumsy meditation on corruption

REVIEW: The ‘Rings of Power season 2’ is a clumsy meditation on corruption

I was not a fan of the first season of ‘The Rings of Power,’ the Prime Video streaming series based on the appendices of JRR Tolkien’s beloved ‘Lord of the Rings’ books. My biggest gripe was in the depiction of the elves as people who were just as frivolous and emotionally unstable as the humans. I talked about the inevitable comparisons that were going to be made between the show and Peter Jackson’s vision of that world in his ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. But considering the amount of money that Prime Video has thrown at this show, I was curious to see if things would get better on its second round.

The second season is now focused on the forging of the titular Rings of Power. The eight-episode season is focused on Sauron (Charlie Vickers), who has now disguised himself as the elf Annatar manipulates the elvish smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edward) to forge more rings for the dwarves and the race of man. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) must face the consequences of her actions in season one as she is forced to confess of her dealings with Sauron, when he was disguised as the human Halbrand to Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) and Elron (Robert Aramayo). The dwarves are in disarray as an earthquake caused by the rise of a volcano in Mordor destroys the sun shafts in Kaza-dum forcing King Durin (Peter Mulan) and his son Durin (Owain Arthus) to navigate their tempestuous relationship. The Harfoots Nori (Markella Kavanagh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) continue to accompany the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) to find the point of the stars while, in later episodes, we discover the chaos that is happening in the realms of men, highlighting the story of Queen Regent Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and Isildur (Maxim Baldry) as the orcs march out of Mordor led by Adar (Sam Hazeldine).

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs PrinceDurin 01

It’s a lot of stories that is happening simultaneously and what is attractive about the show is how the immense budget is reflected in the CGI and the production of each scene. The show looks expensive, and the special effects are convincing enough, giving life to giant spiders, ents, trolls, and even the Barrow-Wights. The world is immersive, with hundreds of extras keeping the world populated and making sure the show doesn’t feel small.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Adar3 01

In fact, with all the storylines at play, it’s just a marvel at how much all of this must cost.

There is an enjoyable aspect to the narrative: a classic epic adventure story with multiple protagonists on their own quests to strive towards stopping a great evil. But as we are now into the second season, several characters have yet to interact and some of the storylines have yet to fully intersect, which slows down the pace of the whole show altogether. At eight episodes, the Stranger and his quest for his forgotten memories and his name takes forever and while it continues to strengthen the bond between him and the two Harfoots, his storyline still feels adjunct to the main narrative.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Annatar2 01

The ones who get the most focus are the elves, and this is still my most sour spot on the whole show. For beings that live for thousands of years, they make the most foolish mistakes and make the most questionable of actions. Galadriel’s insistence of facing Sauron despite the fact that he has fooled her for almost all of the first season should be a cause for self-reflection and instead, it emboldens her to do more acts that feel impulsive and reckless. The same can be said for Elrond and the way by which Celebrimbor is so easily swayed and manipulated by Sauron-as-Annatar does not feel at all seemly for the character of the elves.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Elrond2 01

The highlights of the show are the moments when it focuses on the Dwarves. Disa is still one of the most realised characters in the show and is performed extremely well by Sophia Nomvete. Their storyline is the one that moves at a proper pace yet still manages to delve into the emotional weight of the issues at hand. Things get even worse when the dwarven rings come into play.

    SDCCTrailer FrameGrabs Galadriel 01

Season 2 grounds itself by exploring the corrupting effect of power and fame and glory. It’s best when it navigates this as best seen in the storyline of the Dwarves or when Elrond argues with Galadriel regarding her ring (though Galadriel’s position, considering her past experience with Sauron, makes for a weak argument) or the way by which Sauron plays with Celebrimbor’s own pride. It would have been interesting to see this play out if the writing was stronger and tighter (which means removing the adjunct stories like The Stranger’s or Isildur’s) but all of this is bogged down by the rest of the storylines that all don’t push towards a clear focus.

And, by the end of the season, there’s still so many storylines left opened – of course, for the eventual third season – but none of which feels even partially resolved. It still feels like the first act of the larger story and that can get quite tedious.

    My Rating:

    stars 2 5

  • Sinag Maynila Review: ‘Her Locket’ is an uneven tale that tries to do too much

Sinag Maynila Review: ‘Her Locket’ is an uneven tale that tries to do too much

‘Her Locket,’ a film directed by J.E. Tiglao, from a script by Tiglao and Maze Miranda, is mixed bag of stories where some narratives play out better than others, while some of the more interesting ideas of the film are left out completely. Set primarily in the home of Jewel Ouyang (Rebecca Chuaunsu), a woman suffering from dementia, and her son, the lawyer Kyle (Boo Gabunada), her memories start to return after finding a locket that holds a phot of her and her family. She relates these stories to her new caregiver, Teresa (Elora Espano), who has issues of her own concerning her father and who carries a desperate need to change her appearance.

The film jumps back and forth through time, detailing Jewel’s complicated relationship with her parents and her brother Magnus (Benedict Cua as the younger version, Francis Mata as the older version) that includes leaving architecture to pursue an actor career and her frowned-upon relationship with a Filipino (Tommy Alejandrino), Each story is its own little movie that attempts to build the momentum for a confrontation between the older Jewel and the older Magnus after Magnus has taken what is rightfully hers.

    Her Locket 4.39.20
Captured from YouTube: Her Locket Trailer 2024

The film attempts to tell many stories: one of mental health and the struggles one faces when living with dementia and caring for someone with dementia; the complexities of Filipino-Chinese traditions and how they can be oppressive for the younger generation; through Teresa, there’s a story about trust and loyalty and a need to run away from her past while Jewel, recalling now all her lost memories because of the locket, is ready to confront her history and face off with her brother.

Telling all of these stories, ‘Her Locket’ becomes a mixed bag because the script struggles to connect all these stories thematically. While there is a parallelism that is attempted with Jewel and Teresa’s need to face their past, the stakes are very different for both characters. Jewel’s oppression is cultural, but she has the means to take a stand and she has the strength to choose the path of kindness despite all that’s done to her. On the other hand, Teresa’s oppression is economic, and she does not have the means to easily face up to the challenges. The comparison isn’t equal, so it has a hard time finding synergy within the film’s overall narrative.

At the same time, the story tackles the complex traditions of the Filipino-Chinese family – their push towards business rather than the arts, arranged marriages, their resistance to mixed race relationships, and their strict beliefs against queer children – but these are stories that have all been told before in one way or another in books, movies, and television shows. I know that these issues still exist but their appearance in this film doesn’t offer any new insight or perspective into these narratives.

    Her Locket 4.39.46
Captured from YouTube: Her Locket Trailer 2024

The writing also has a habit of painting its characters with only one palette, rendering many of the characters as one-dimensional such as Magnus and even Jewel. The most complex character in the film is Teresa, whose story feels adjunct to the rest of the movie. Her relationship with Jewel is the heart and soul of the film with Chuaunsu and Espano creating a palpable chemistry that grounds the film.

The best parts of the film go to the flashback featuring Sophie Ng as a younger Jewel. Ng has a way of breathing life into the role that even if she is written as a character straight out of a melodrama – a martyr, a victim, kind to a fault – she makes it believable. Her scenes with Tommy Alejandrino are the strongest, where Tiglao shows a capable hand of playing out the romance of their storyline. Their chemistry is strong, and their scenes brings life to the film. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long.

    Her Locket 4.40.07
Captured from YouTube: Her Locket Trailer 2024

There are storylines that are presented that are never played out that could have given us a new perspective of things such as Jewel becoming an actress despite her mother’s disappointment, or a further examination of her relationship with her father, which is given just a few scenes. Those are vital but when you consider that the film’s third act is that of a courtroom drama and the children’s relationship with their father is put on centerstage, there should have been more.

‘Her Locket’ is an ambitious piece that leans in the more familiar narratives and tried to put them all in into one movie that its parts are far better than the sum. But the performances from Ng, Alejandrino, and Espano are something to remember.

    My Rating:

    stars 2 5

Mula sa Buwan Announces Two Final Shows on September 14

If you’ve been waiting to catch “Mula sa Buwan,” this is your last chance! The beloved Filipino musical that has captured the hearts of many is set to stage its final two performances on September 14 at 2 PM and 7:30 PM. After these shows, the curtain will fall, marking the end of an era for this acclaimed production.

    Final 2 Shows Announcement 1

    A Definitive Farewell

As announced during the curtain call, the upcoming performances will be the last opportunity for LaBuwans to experience “Mula sa Buwan” in its definitive form. The show, a retelling of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, set against the backdrop of 1940s Manila, has been a beacon of Filipino theater, blending history, romance, and the enduring spirit of defiance.

Creator Pat Valera shared the poignant news that “Mula sa Buwan” will not be returning to the stage in the near future. This means that on September 14, actors Myke Salomon, Gab Pangilinan, MC Dela Cruz, Phi Palmos, and Jillian Ita-as will take their final bows as members of this extraordinary troupe.

    The Actors’ Heartfelt Goodbyes

Each of the five actors who have been central to “Mula sa Buwan’s” success shared their reflections on what the show has meant to them and the legacy they leave behind.

Gab Pangilinan, who played Roxane, described “Mula sa Buwan” as a dream come true, stating, “Roxane was my first big Filipina role. I’ve grown so much as an artist and as a person through Roxane, and through this musical.”

Myke Salomon, who portrayed Cyrano, expressed that “Mula sa Buwan” represents everyone who has been part of the production, saying, “Ang Mula sa Buwan ay tayo, bawat taong nasa loob ng tanghalan.”

MC Dela Cruz shared his deep connection with the show, calling it “HOME,” as it marked the beginning of his journey as a theater actor. He added, “Kahit anong shows na ang nagawa ko, MSB pa rin ‘yung uuwian ko.”

Phi Palmos, who played the role of Rosanna, highlighted the significance of LGBTQIA+ representation in the show, stating, “Mula sa Buwan is one prime example of LGBTQIA+ representation. That during the war, we exist. Nandun kami at hinding-hindi mabubura.”

Jillian Ita-as, who joined the production as Gabriel in 2022, described “Mula sa Buwan” as a familiar piece of hope. “It’s just this timeless, classic story that people love coming back home to again, and again, and again,” she said.

    Final 2 Shows Announcement 2

What Will Be Missed the Most

As the cast prepares for their final performances, they shared what they will miss most about the show.

Gab expressed her gratitude for the “fools, dreamers, misfits who love telling the story just as much.” Myke mentioned missing everyone who has been part of this journey, and MC reflected on the lessons his characters, Maximo and Christian, taught him.

Phi emphasized the closeness and camaraderie among the cast, saying, “When you’re really together, everyone genuinely cares for each other. And I believe that’s the reason the effect of the musical is like that.”

Jillian spoke fondly of the people involved, describing them as family. “Para kaming mga classmate na buong school year magkasama, that’s really how deeply I feel for each and everyone one of them,” she shared.

    A Final Message to LaBuwans

The actors also left heartfelt messages for their supporters.

Gab encouraged everyone to carry the lessons and emotions from the play with them, saying, “Lagi’t lagi, pag-ibig ang mananaig.” Myke hoped that the light of “Mula sa Buwan” is etched in everyone’s hearts, while MC simply said, “Salamat, kaibigan.”
