  • Ben Whishaw Returns as the Voice of Paddington in the Heartwarming “Paddington in Peru”

Ben Whishaw Returns as the Voice of Paddington in the Heartwarming “Paddington in Peru”

Stepping into the delightful red Wellingtons of Paddington Bear once more, Ben Whishaw reprises his beloved role in the highly anticipated Paddington in Peru. Known for his warmth, optimism, and unshakeable kindness, Paddington returns for an all-new adventure set against the stunning backdrop of Peru.

    Paddington perched

A Jungle Adventure Like No Other

In Paddington in Peru, Paddington is still living with the Browns but ventures into the unknown jungles of his homeland. This exciting change brings the whole Brown family out of their comfort zone.

“The big development in this film is that formerly Paddington’s been at Windsor Gardens in the Browns home, which is his home” adds Ben Whishaw. “But this film shows us the opposite, which is the Browns going out into the wild, into the jungle, and into the unknown. Each character faces something about themselves on this journey, and something about their place within the family. There’s something very moving about how they’re brought closer together through this endeavour.”

The story kicks off with a mystery involving Paddington’s beloved Aunt Lucy, who has disappeared from the Home for Retired Bears. Armed with an enigmatic map and endless determination, Paddington leads the Browns through the Amazon rainforest, uncovering surprises, heartwarming moments, and even the possibility of a legendary treasure.

A Fresh Perspective with Director Dougal Wilson

Taking the director’s chair is Dougal Wilson, who Whishaw describes as bringing his unique vision to the film. “ He’s done the only thing I think a director can do who’s taking on this kind of film, which is just to make it completely his own and really inhabit his own version of Paddington. I will watch Dougal and I’ll see him feeling his way into the character, and how he would like a line to sound. I can feel a Paddington quality about him.”

Animation director Pablo Grillo also highlights Whishaw’s critical role in shaping Paddington’s on-screen magic:

“Ben’s voice underpins the entire performance. The tonality of his delivery is like a musical score that guides our animation. We’ve been running workshops with Ben, where he physically enacts scenes, providing us with true impulses and emotional shifts to tap into for Paddington’s performance.”

Despite working behind the scenes, Whishaw thrives on collaboration. “Whilst the process of recording for me is quite solitary, I’m not completely alone because I have Dougal, and I have Pablo” says Whishaw. “I also have the beautiful work of the actors on the screen, which I’m trying to always respond to. There’s a kind of magic that happens, and I’ll do my bit, which might be the voice, but also some of the physicality. Pablo will go away with the extraordinary team of people, and some magic is done.”

  • Women Run the World in Globe-trotting Spy Action Flick ‘The 355’, premiering soon on Lionsgate Play

Women Run the World in Globe-trotting Spy Action Flick ‘The 355’, premiering soon on Lionsgate Play

What happens when four powerhouse actresses team up in an action-packed spy movie? You get The 355 – a star-studded thriller that delivers high-stakes suspense and heart-pounding action. The film follows a group of international agents who must put aside their rivalries to keep a top-secret weapon from falling into the wrong hands and triggering World War III.

    The 355 Stills 02

CIA operative Mace (Jessica Chastain) is tasked to retrieve a top-secret weapon – a flash drive that can hack into any computer with a few keystrokes – and recruits the help of her colleague, retired British MI6 operative Khadijah Adiyeme (Lupita Nyong’o). The mission gets messier when DNI agent and psychologist Graciela Rivera (Penelope Cruz) and rival German BND agent Marie Schmidt (Diane Kruger) join the hunt, each wanting to claim the program drive for their respective agencies. But a group of four head-strong heroines clashing heads isn’t the end of their problems, they must work together to make sure the weapon doesn’t fall into the hands of international crime entrepreneurs.

    The 355

The 355 is an original action thriller conceptualized by Jessica Chastain herself and written by Simon Kinberg and Theresa Rebeck. Featuring some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, The 355 is sure to be an exhilarating ride for fans of high-octane espionage. In an interview with Screenrant, Jessica Chastain, who plays Mace and is also one of the film’s producers, talks about what excited her most in creating the movie, “Well, I like the idea that the actresses are all the bosses of the film. They’re the owners of the film. We raised the money on our own. We developed the script together, the characters together, we are the owners. It was made outside of a studio system, independently. We made it for a fraction of the cost of what a normal movie like this is made for. So, it’s exciting to me that the artists are now the owners of the work, and especially women. It’s exciting to me that the actresses are the ones in charge of the film.”

    The 355 2

Director Simon Kinberg shared with CBR what drew him into directing the film, “I’m a huge James Bond fan and I love the spy genre in general. The first script I ever wrote was Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The 355 is a different kind of spy movie, but it is a love letter to spy movies. So, I was intrigued by the fact that it was a spy movie. I loved the idea of a female-ensemble spy movie. There are two things in there that are novel. One, there’s not a lot of female spy movies. But two, there are even fewer ensemble spy movies.”

Buckle up for a thrilling ride when The 355 comes to Lionsgate Play on January 31, 2025.

  • Movie Review — Playing with Form, Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Presence’ Is a Marvel of a Study of a Family in Duress

Movie Review — Playing with Form, Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Presence’ Is a Marvel of a Study of a Family in Duress

Director Steven Soderbergh is the consummate filmmaker, who is always unafraid to play with form and technique. He is constantly pushing the boundaries of what you can do with cinema as a storytelling device and while the idea of a film shot entirely in the first-person point-of-view is not exactly new, to do it throughout the whole film and in the POV of a spirit puts a completely different spin on what you’ve come to expect from him. Though, Soderbergh has played around with multiple genres before. ‘Presence’ begins first as a novelty as we see the narrative unfold only from the perspective of the ghost complete with long takes that glide up and down and throughout the single location – a lavish two-storey, three bedroom house in the suburbs – but as the characters of the family who just moved into the home are revealed and the drama starts to unravel, the novelty of the technique disappears and we become the ghost itself, listening in and watching this family struggle.

The family – Chris, Rebecca, Tyler, and Chloe – seem like a typical bi-racial family. Chris (Chris Sullivan) is white and dotes on his daughter Chloe (Callina Liang) while Rebecca (Lucy Liu) is dismissive of her daughter and is more supportive and encouraging to her swim varsity champion of a son Tyler (Eddy Maday). Chris and Rebecca are constantly disagreeing while Rebecca seems to be having trouble with work. Tyler is dismissive of his younger sister and is hostile to her grieving state. Chloe has just recently lost her best friend. The circumstances are unclear at first, but the film soon lays everything clear later on. Sometimes, Ryan (West Mulholland), a friend of Tyler comes over and he sells weed to Chloe and they start getting closer.

While the film explores the brittle dynamics of this family and how fragile these connections are – at any moment, they are going to break apart – the ghost feels most connected to Chloe, most probably because of her grief. Her longing for her recently passed friend is causing the rift between her and her brother but also allows her to feel the presence in their home.

The film actually shifts again from novelty to a family drama and then into a supernatural mystery as the eponymous presence begins to move things. This ghost and its attachment to Chloe begins to stir the film towards its surprising conclusion that begins to tie in parts of backstory that was being carefully laid out at the start.

Chris Sullivan (Chris) and Lucy Liu (Rebekah) in Presence directed by Steven Soderbergh
Photo by Peter Andrews | Copyright The Spectral Spirit Company

By using the first-person perspective, Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp can control the amount of information the audience can get. We are piecing together along with the presence the story of this family. While it sits in and listens to the conversation of the parents in the kitchen, a word will trigger the presence and it rushes up to the bedroom to watch Chloe in bed, moping. We don’t have the context of some of their conversations. The family’s history is unknown to us. Sometimes, they make phone calls, and we have to assume what they are referencing to, if it’s important at all.

In this way, Soderbergh turns us into the presence and when we begin to see the manipulations enacted upon Chloe by some of the characters, we are not rendered helpless because the ghost does act in her defense. Interestingly enough, the film surprises us with its feminist theme that begins to blossom half-way through the film, and organically too.

The cast is utterly brilliant as they are performing in such a natural and spontaneous way. While the family do have their moments, the cast never goes for the explosive choices and tries to keep things leveled. As large as that house is, the proximity is forcing them to go interior and it makes for an interesting watch.

‘Presence’ is a deceptively enjoyable film as it vacillates between an experiment in form but also a study of a family in duress. How the two collide creates an arresting movie that, at a tight 85-minutes, never overstays its welcome.

  • Movie Review — The Church and Human Frailty: A Review of ‘Conclave’

Movie Review — The Church and Human Frailty: A Review of ‘Conclave’

A political thriller set during the closed-door session of the College of Cardinals as they are electing the next pope? The whole premise of ‘Conclave’ was very intriguing to me as the possibilities of criticism of the church would come into play. What I loved about director Edward Berger’s tone and imagery in his filmmaking was how he completely stripped away the reverence and moral authority that the audience may have for this gathering of Cardinals in the most holy of Catholic cities. The emphasis on their humanity, and most especially, their frailty was very welcomed in this rather stirring and controversial film.

Berger brings the camera (through Director of Photography Stephane Fontaine) extremely close to his subjects, oftentimes highlighting the age of his characters, their vulnerabilities, their hopes and fears, and for some, their guilt or lust for power. Despite all the pomp and circumstance of this occasion – the pope has just died, and the cardinals are convening to vote and elect the successor – and so they are dressed in their best regalia, fed rather lavishly, attended to by the nuns, and are surrounded by the finest furniture that the Vatican can buy. We see them drink, smoke, and scheme amongst each other; politicking to direct the path of the church to what they believe is right. Berger’s camera takes them in long shots to show the power plays at work and then would cut away to show dozens and dozens of cigarette butts scattered on the ground. Throughout the film, it feels like Berger’s intention is to render these people human and thus impressing upon us that the church and all that it proclaims all depends on who succeeds the papacy.

Leading the impressive cast is Ralph Fiennes, as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, the dean of the College of Cardinals. It is his task to administer and manage the election. Unfortunately, the sudden passing of the previous pope has left a lot of unanswered questions and some mysteries that need to be resolved. There are rumors that Cardinal Joseph Tremblay (John Lithgow) from Canada, how an argument with the previous pope and his viability for being elected is in question.

The biggest rivals are the American Cardinal, Cardinal Aldo Bellini (Stanley Tucci) and the Italian Cardinal, Cardinal Goffredo Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto), where Bellini is of the more progressive and liberal group while Tedesco is more traditionalist, more conservative. Surprisingly, the Nigerian Cardinal Joshua Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati) is proving to be extremely popular and has a great chance of becoming the first black pope. The power plays are happening fast, and Cardinal Lawrence must also deal with Cardinal Vincent Benitez (Carlos Diehz), a cardinal who has worked in secret and is not in any of the list, who suddenly shows up.

Cardinal Lawrence must navigate through the politicking and the gray areas of every little thing happening during this conclave, while discovering that even he is getting votes and may have a chance of getting the papacy except he doesn’t want it. Adding additional ingredients to an already explosive brew is Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes, a nun who is the cardinal’s head caterer and housekeeper. It’s a relatively short role – this is, after all, a man’s world – but her scenes are powerful and has ramifications that tie-in to the surprising ending of Peter Straughan’s screenplay based on the book by Robert Harris.

This is a thriller without any violence or murder, or fear of murder. But it is thrilling as we are seeing a church in a state of flux, where its heart and soul is being pulled into many different directions. There’s a lot of great insights here about the world and the way the Catholic church has served and failed the world. Berger and company seem to take a stand and it’s most surprising and farcical is such a powerful statement that truly provokes much thought and questions.

It’s so refreshing to see this moral debate argued through the genre of the political thriller. It highlights that more than anything, the battleground that is the church has practical, economical, and social repercussions for both believers and non-believers alike. How the film manages to reference this without showing the world outside the sequestered halls of the conclave is a brilliant work of writing and direction. I am not surprised of its eight Academy Award nominations, including Ralph Fiennes for Best Actor and Volker Bertelmann for Best Original Score. The music of the film is always pressing the fact that this is serious and that the stakes are high. It is relentless and gives the film that added dread that keeps the energy going.
