Theater Review: The Two Sides of GMG’s Staging of ‘Dear Evan Hansen’

I knew nothing about the show coming into the Solaire Theatre on press night for ‘Dear Evan Hansen.’ I knew that it was a popular musical – it won six of the nine Tony Awards it was nominated for, including Best Musical and Best Score, and was later adapted into a film – and that Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote the music and lyrics, are well-loved songwriters having written the songs of ‘La La Land,’ ‘The Greatest Showman,’ and a Broadway musical that I love, ‘Dogfight.’ I was expecting a great show, due to this popularity and how it’s the “favourite musical” of my close friends. What I was not expecting was to be pulled in two very different emotional directions.

    Dear Evan Hansen

First off, as a show, ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ was quite strong. The set design by Morgan Large along with the video direction and design by Large and Ravi Deepres, really created such powerful images, quickly transforming the stage from bedroom to school hallway complete with lockers, to a kitchen or a living room. The sets just swipe in and it’s quite a feat to watch. The stage is practically empty except for when the different set ups just rush in to complete the scene while the video wall in the back can heighten a song by creating a dazzling display that highlights the context of the scene. It’s so brilliantly put-together that it was doing exactly what it should without overwhelming a scene. The cast was quite strong, especially Ellis Kirk, who played the titular role of Evan Hansen, and Rebecca McKinnis, who plays Evan’s mom, Heidi. Both Kirk and McKinnis really brought the play to the emotional level it needed to go to and they were the cast’s strongest singers to boot.

The direction by Adam Penford allowed the show to shift and slide off to its comedic moments but can throw itself into its much darker themes when it has to. The cast do quite a good job at playing high school kids, though Tom Dickerson just looked like a mature man to effectively sell the character of Jared, Evan Hansen’s neighbour and only confidant. He did as best as he could to try and portray a teen but his height, body frame, and looks just went counter the imagery that I couldn’t suspend my disbelief. I had no trouble with the others, most especially with Kirk and Zoe Athena, who plays Zoe Murphy, Evan Hansen’s crush in school.

    Dear Evan Hansen

The songs of Pasek and Paul are so good that you can understand why the musical won a Tony, and it’s an overall good production. What shocked me, though, was halfway through the first act, I started to feel very uncomfortable with where the show was going narratively. The book by Steven Levenson details the story of an anxious high school senior who is tasked by his therapist to write letters to himself every day to help with his anxiety, hence the name of the play. After an encounter with Connor, the school bully, one of Evan’s letters gets mistaken for having been written by Connor and Evan begins to lie to try and become part of a larger narrative. Connor happens to be Zoe’s brother, Zoe being Evan’s crush in high school. The suicide shocks the whole campus, and it is even more shocking to discover that Connor had a friend and it’s the socially awkward outsider, Evan Hansen.

    Dear Evan Hansen

What makes the show so uncomfortable is how far Evan takes this lie and how much bigger the misunderstanding grows. It gets so big that, at some point, it becomes harder and harder to imagine how the story can properly position Evan into a place where he can be forgiven for what he’s done. Lives are changed, perceptions are altered, and even a movement begins, and it’s all based on a lie from one socially awkward young man with a serious mental condition who just wanted to belong.

    Dear Evan Hansen

The play never actually manages to properly give any sort of justice to the characters of the story. The way it handles all the deception was so uncomfortable to me that, no matter how powerful McKinnis sings her song near the end of Act II (‘So Big So Small,’) as she cradles her son when he finally tells the truth to her (after he does such a horrid thing to her as well) I found myself so incapable of connecting. People around me were sobbing as Evan sings his regret (‘Words Fail’) in a powerful ballad but nobody is there to hear him. It’s a soliloquy but it does not equate to asking for forgiveness. Not in any way that is meaningful to the ones who were hurt.

And I sit in my seat, amazed at how Kirk manages to keep me invested in his performance despite my inability to connect with the character he plays; this role would kill a lesser actor. Instead, I think about the women of the show – Zoe, who was terrorized by her brother when he was alive, Connor’s mom, and Evans’ mom – who all have to suffer from Evan’s deceit, yet must somehow forgive him because he’s broken and not let him face the full consequence of his actions.

I sit there wondering how to feel. The performances were great. That stage design and the video wall made so much theater magic with something so simple. And yet, I just couldn’t bring myself to empathize with story. A lot of people did, though, but I felt like justice was denied and that it wasn’t fair. I didn’t want to applaud that, no matter how good the production was.

    My Rating:

    stars 3 5

Dear Evan Hansen runs until October 5, 2025, at The Theater at Solaire. Don’t miss the chance to experience this Tony Award-winning musical live on stage. Tickets are available at Ticketworld.

About “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc”

This explosive new movie brings the critically acclaimed anime to the big screen for the very first time. Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s hit manga, Reze Arc plunges Denji into his most personal and perilous fight yet.

Once a debt-ridden teenager forced to hunt devils for the yakuza, Denji was brutally betrayed. But thanks to a soul-binding deal with his loyal devil dog Pochita, he was reborn as Chainsaw Man—a fearsome hybrid with a chainsaw for a heart (and face).

Now, in the aftermath of bloody battles and shifting allegiances, Denji’s world is shaken again when Reze, a beautiful stranger with a deadly aura, walks into his life. What begins as a flirtation quickly spirals into something far more terrifying.

Expect Intense Action, Twisted Romance, and Brutal Choices

Fans of the series know to expect the unexpected—and Reze Arc delivers on all fronts. Packed with fast-paced devil battles, stunning animation by MAPPA, and emotional gut-punches, this chapter dives deep into what it means to be human in a world overrun by devils and deception.

With razor-sharp writing from Hiroshi Seko (Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan Final Season) and direction by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film promises a cinematic spectacle that’s equal parts heartbreak and havoc.

  • Blankets, Playlists, and Popcorn: Lionsgate Play’s Perfect Ber Month Binge

Blankets, Playlists, and Popcorn: Lionsgate Play’s Perfect Ber Month Binge

There’s something about the “Ber months” that feels instantly different. The nights get cooler, Christmas playlists start sneaking into jeepney rides and malls, and the air carries that faint mix of nostalgia and excitement. In the Philippines, September doesn’t just mark the start of the holiday countdown – it’s also the perfect excuse to slow down, cozy up, and indulge in feel-good entertainment.

    Lionsgate Play 3

Whether you’re into love stories that make your heart flutter, supernatural romances with a bite, or dramas that feel achingly real, Lionsgate Play has something for every mood. Here are five comforting picks to kick off the Ber month binge.

    The Twilight Saga

    Twilight

Few things match the brooding mood of September better than vampires, werewolves, and a love triangle that had the whole world choosing sides. Long before today’s headline-making romances – yes, we’re looking at you, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce – Bella and Edward had their own ultimate ‘forever’ moment, an engagement reveal that sent Team Edward and Team Jacob into absolute overdrive. The Twilight Saga follows Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), an ordinary girl who falls for the enigmatic Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), only to discover he’s a vampire. As their romance deepens, childhood friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) steps in with his own secrets. With danger, desire, and supernatural stakes at every turn, it’s the perfect marathon for nights when you want a love story as intense as it is iconic.

    What Women Want

    What Women Want

When a freak accident gives advertising exec Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) the power to hear women’s thoughts, his world – and ego – turn upside down. At first, he uses his new ability to get ahead at work, but everything changes when he meets his brilliant new boss Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt). As Nick begins to understand the women around him, he also learns a few things about himself and what it really takes to win someone’s heart. Witty, charming, and just the right amount of cheesy, What Women Want is proof that love can be found when you least expect it.

    Dirty Dancing

    Dirty Dancing

Set in the summer of 1963, this beloved musical follows Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) on vacation with her family at a sleepy Catskills resort. When she meets dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), she’s drawn into his electrifying world of music, movement, and late-night rehearsals. What starts as secret lessons quickly turns into a romance that challenges both their worlds and leads to one of the most iconic final dance scenes ever filmed. With its legendary soundtrack and unforgettable final dance, this film isn’t just a favorite – it’s a rite of passage.

    Normal People

    Normal People

This beautifully raw series, based on Sally Rooney’s acclaimed novel, follows Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a sharp and solitary young woman, and Connell (Paul Mescal), the well-liked boy from her school, as they weave in and out of each other’s lives from high school through university. Their relationship shifts from secret romance to deep friendship to painful estrangement, all while they struggle with family pressures, personal insecurities, and the push and pull of first love. With its quiet intensity, breathtaking performances, and deeply relatable moments, it’s the kind of drama that lingers long after the last episode.

    Warm Bodies

    Warm Bodies

A zombie romcom? Believe it. When undead loner R (Nicholas Hoult) saves human survivor Julie (Teresa Palmer), an unlikely romance begins to bloom and maybe even spark the end of the apocalypse. With its clever humor, surprising warmth, and a romance that literally brings new life, Warm Bodies is an offbeat love story perfect for a cozy night in.

From classic romances to supernatural adventures, Lionsgate Play has everything you need to set the perfect mood this September. Time to grab a blanket, pour yourself something warm, and let the Ber month binge begin.

  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Kevin Kline Bring Quirky Charm to “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” — In Cinemas This September 17

Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Kevin Kline Bring Quirky Charm to “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” — In Cinemas This September 17

Every epic trip starts with a choice. For David (Colin Farrell), it’s at a car rental agency staffed by a peculiar pair: a theatrical cashier (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) and an even stranger mechanic (Kevin Kline). Their offering? A run-down 1994 Saturn GL and—wait for it—a retrofitted GPS system that looks more suited for a video game console than a road trip.

    ABBBJ car

And so begins A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, a whimsical and heartwarming new film that takes David, along with Sarah (Margot Robbie), a woman he just met at a wedding, on a ride neither of them expected.

From Stage Legends to Screen Eccentrics

Director Kogonada didn’t just want actors—he wanted theatricality. That’s why he cast Waller-Bridge and Kline, both celebrated veterans of the stage and screen, to bring a special kind of sparkle to their roles.

“Phoebe and Kevin are from the theater, and that scene called for a certain kind of theatricality and playfulness that for me was central to this story,” Kogonada says.

And it shows. The brief yet unforgettable sequence with the two delivers a jolt of energy, humor, and curiosity that sets the tone for everything that follows.

    Magic Behind the Monitor

Seth Reiss, the film’s writer (best known for The Menu), recalls being captivated just watching the scene come to life.

“It was such a joy to look at the monitor when they were filming this scene and see Phoebe and Kevin sitting behind a desk, having a blast, and Colin having a blast with them,” says Reiss. “They created a great and surprising dynamic.”

Their chemistry? Instant. Their comedic timing? Impeccable. The result? A small but mighty moment that ripples across the entire film.

The GPS That Guides More Than Directions

This isn’t just any GPS system. It’s quirky, it’s retro, and it’s central to the film’s journey—literally and metaphorically. When David turns it on, it asks a single question:

“Do you want to go on a big bold beautiful journey?” “There’s something playful about this device,” Kogonada explains. “We had the GPS designed to resemble a Nintendo game controller and HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The GPS is helping them navigate the world both geographically and existentially in order for them to move forward romantically.”

The GPS becomes both a plot device and a metaphor. It doesn’t just guide—it nudges, challenges, and inspires.

    ABBBJ field

Setting the Tone, One Odd Encounter at a Time

According to producer Bradley Thomas, the Waller-Bridge-Kline duo does more than deliver laughs—they’re the film’s unexpected spark plugs.

“Phoebe’s and Kevin’s roles are pivotal,” says Thomas. “They’re the first characters David meets, and they propel him on this adventure. When Phoebe and Kevin show up, you just know you’re in for something smart and fun.”

And isn’t that exactly what we want from a story called A Big Bold Beautiful Journey?

Don’t Miss This Whimsical Road Trip – September 17

With a powerhouse cast including Colin Farrell, Margot Robbie, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Kevin Kline, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is poised to capture hearts and stir imaginations.

Whether you’re in it for the romance, the laughs, or just the joy of watching four acting titans share the screen, this one’s worth the ride.

Don’t Miss the Beat: Theatre Group Asia Announces Ticket Sales for “A Chorus Line”

Fresh from the success of Into the Woods, Theatre Group Asia (TGA) brings another Broadway landmark to local audiences with A Chorus Line*, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Tickets sales roll out starting September 15-17 for  BPI card holders, TGA early sign-ups on September 18, and to the general public September 19 via Ticket World.

    A Chorus Line poster 2

A landmark in American musical theatre and celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, A Chorus Line revolutionized Broadway by spotlighting the lives of ensemble dancers—the unsung heroes of every musical. As it follows 17 hopefuls vying for eight spots, it becomes an ode to ambition, sacrifice, and individuality. TGA is bringing this story to life with an all-Filipino cast, celebrating the global talent and cultural depth of the Philippines.TGA’s Overall Artistic and Creative Director, Tony Award-winner Clint Ramos, shares, “This local production of A Chorus Line will honor the iconic legacy of its original 1975 premiere while breathing new life into its message for a new generation.” The musical is notable for its stripped-down set, iconic choreography, and intensely personal monologues that explore identity, perseverance, and the often invisible cost of chasing a dream. It remains one of the few musicals to ever win the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama aside from winning the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of A Musical (James Kirkwood), Best Original Score (Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban), Best Director (Michael Bennett), and Best Choreography (Michael Bennett and Bob Avian) that same year.

    A Chorus Line Ticket Dates

As it celebrates its golden year, this enduring production continues to inspire anyone who’s ever dared to chase a dream. Beloved songs include “One [Singular Sensation],” “What I Did For Love,” “I Can Do That,” “I Hope I Get It,” and “The Music and the Mirror.” A film adaptation was released in 1985, directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Michael Douglas.

New York-based Emmy Award-winning Karla Puno Garcia who is set to direct and choreograph the musical shares, “This production is as much about discovering raw, beautiful talent as it is about telling a story.” The celebrated respected Fil-Am artist and dance educator expounds, “I’ve lived this story. I’ve been the dancer hoping to be seen, fighting to be chosen, giving everything to the moment. Now, I get to turn that experience into an opportunity for others.”

    A Chorus Line seat layout

Puno Garcia promises a production that remains faithful to the original material while making it resonate with a younger set of Filipino theatergoers, “I’ve been in conversation with Baayork Lee, who embodies the spirit of the original production. Once we complete the casting, we’ll breathe new life into the material while staying true to the original show’s hallmarks. I’m especially excited to explore the characters with the all-Filipino cast we’re forming. I want to hear their stories and how they connect with the roles they’re portraying. Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” Is a Wild, Witty, Action-Fueled Ride – Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, In Cinemas September 24

A Battle Twenty Years in the Making

It’s been two decades in the making — and it shows. Legendary filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson returns with One Battle After Another, a genre-blending action-thriller that’s equal parts emotionally raw and unapologetically absurd. The film storms into Philippine theaters and IMAX® screens this September 24.

    Twisted, Timely, and Totally Unpredictable

Originally conceived 20 years ago, the script for One Battle After Another has morphed across different versions — but its core remains rock-solid.

Written, directed, and produced by Anderson, the story follows Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio), a once-infamous revolutionary now living in paranoid isolation with his fiercely independent daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). Their off-grid world is shattered when Bob’s old enemy (Sean Penn) reemerges after 16 years… and Willa vanishes without a trace.

What follows is a chaotic, heartfelt journey as Bob sets out to rescue his daughter, all while confronting the consequences of his own radical past.

A Cast That Packs a Punch

DiCaprio is joined by an eclectic, powerhouse ensemble that includes:

Together, they inhabit a world that’s grimy, surreal, and bursting with energy — exactly the kind of chaotic sandbox Anderson knows how to shape.

The Serious Business of Being Funny

While it’s not technically a comedy, One Battle After Another isn’t afraid to lean into its stranger side. Humor in the film, as Anderson puts it, comes not from punchlines — but from truth.

“The things I think are funny are the things I think are funny, it’s kind of that simple. When you’re on set and you are collaborating with actors, if they are trying to be funny, it’s not going to be funny. Generally, humor can come out of sincerity, or a dedication to something.”

And he’s not alone in seeing the humor shine through. Legendary director Steven Spielberg, who recently hosted a Q&A with Anderson at the Directors Guild of America, had this to say:

“had a great time laughing all the way”

Building a World, Breaking the Rules

Murphy highlights Anderson’s bold approach to world-building — crafting an exaggerated yet oddly believable version of reality. Factions, foes, friends, and freaks appear throughout Bob and Willa’s journey, each adding new tension and flavor to the mix.

“Paul’s done some incredible world-building, introducing heightened versions of various factions that introduce a myriad of villains and foes and friends along the way. Through all that, it’s a really fun, action-packed thriller from start to finish, with a lot of laughs. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the end of the day is a truly emotional journey of this father and daughter.”

Coming Soon: Don’t Miss It on the Big Screen

One Battle After Another is a one-of-a-kind blend of dark comedy, action, and father-daughter drama. And it’s best experienced the way Anderson intended — loud, immersive, and on the biggest screen possible.
