MOVIE REVIEW: “Dreamboi” Is a Trippy, Sexy Trans-Empowerment Film That Plays by Its Own Rules

Rodina Singh’s “Dreamboi” is a trippy exploration of how trans women use fantasy as a survival mechanism, as writer-director explained during a talkback after one of the screenings. Its lush visuals (with cinematography by Malay Javier) juxtapose a neon-lit, oversaturated erotic dreamscape with the dull, grayish tones of the protagonist’s real life. In one reality, the protagonist, Diwa (EJ Jallorina) battles the everyday challenges a trans woman faces in order to be seen, heard, and accepted, grappling with issues involving the use of public restrooms and violence in the streets. In the other reality, beyond the dirty, heavily vandalized labyrinthine steps to the level six basement where she is offered the use of a restroom that no one else uses, Diwa finds herself one cubicle away from Dreamboi (Tony Labrusca), an audio-porn star whom she subscribes to and is the center of all her erotic desires.

    Dreamboi

“Dreamboi” is not your typical film that sets the main character on a journey toward a goal. Instead, Singh’s movie is an exploration of the psyche of a trans woman who navigating and surviving an unwelcoming world through fantasy. It is not enough that she has her tribe, a group of trans women who serve as Diwa’s found family, in a bar in Barangay Pag-asa run by a mother figure played with such verve by Iyah Minah. It is not enough that Diwa has an officemate, Maki (Migs Almendras), who showers her with affection and flirts with just the right amount of tenacity as to not become a stalker. Dreamboi becomes a symbol of Diwa’s strength and sense of self. Her proximity to him, whether it’s through the CDs she orders and listens to on her headphones or in the blurred lines of fantasy and reality within that basement level restroom where they see each other through a dirty mirror as Diwa relieves herself and Dreamboi pleasures himself, this becomes a coping device that allows Diwa to keep moving forward.

    Dreamboi

Jallorina is a force of nature. She manages the tension that is pulling at Diwa, allowing her to be soft and vulnerable when she’s around her found family in Barangay Pag-asa, and equal cold and stern when confronting a bully in her office (Meanne Espinosa). She even bends this a little when around Maki, whose flirtations she does not dismiss outright but keeps him at a distance – Is it caution? Is it self-preservation? Does she not want to ruin the friendship? It’s a different character altogether but inherently still Diwa.

    Dreamboi

Jallorina gives Diwa a full range of character that makes her fully nuanced and textured. The most powerful of which is when she allows herself to fully break down when her world crashes around her, showing a vulnerability that is captured wonderfully through the camera.

    Dreamboi

“Dreamboi” is far from your usual, run-of-the-mill movie. It’s weird and it’s not afraid to be weird. Singh skillfully balances multiple genres, portraying the trans woman’s life as horror, comedy, light romance, moving drama, and hard-hitting erotica. The dynamic music by Silas and the sound mixing and design by Immanuel Verona and John Buquid never allows the audience to settle. The caution and apprehension Diwa feels at all times punctuates the soundscape, and Singh never fully brings the film into the genre of comedy so as to not underplay the constant threat of danger. But “Dreamboi” does have its funny moments.

    Dreamboi

As part of Sine Silip, “Dreamboi” also has its sexually charged scenes. But in this film, as Tony Labrusca and Jenn Rosa (who plays Lilith, Dreamboi’s partner) throws themselves into the film’s sex scenes, what we see is Diwa’s psyche taking physical form. Here, sex becomes power and the more Diwa imagines it, and eventually imagines herself a part of it, the film’s erotic scenes then become a trans woman’s reconciliation of her own empowerment. All the indignities she suffers, she pushes through as she finds it in herself to believe what she knows is true, no matter how hard others try to take it away from her.

    Dreamboi

“Dreamboi” is more than just a movie. It’s a trippy, erotic fantasy that blurs the line between fantasy and reality to depict some of the survival mechanisms at play in a trans woman’s life. It’s a powerful film that doesn’t play by the rules and why should it?

KARADA Leads the Way in Philippine Health & Wellness with Innovative Body Therapy

Karada, Japan’s leading wellness and body therapy brand ,continues to solidify its position as a trailblazer in the Philippine health and wellness industry by providing Filipinos with a revolutionary approach to holistic body care.

    Lower back muscle treatmentBT

Since its launching  in the country in 2012, KARADA has earned the trust of thousands of Filipinos seeking non-invasive and  holistic alternatives. At the heart of its innovation is the  signature AP Balance® therapy, a unique  treatment  developed in Japan that realigns the Atlas (A) and Pelvis (P) to restore the body’s natural posture and balance. It has become  a sought-after treatment  offering  relief from pain, fatigue, and stress, while promoting long-term physical harmony and wellness. This method combines  techniques from chiropractic, osteopathy, and deep muscle therapy

“Karada is a form of body maintenance called “seitai” that your body needs,” says Hanna  Stelton, Karada Philippines’ General Manager, who  advises regular visits to help correct posture-related pains and alleviate ailments, including cases of Scoliosis,Spondylosis, Frozen Shoulder, Sciatica and more.

It is ideal for people who suffer from body fatigue, poor posture, back or neck pain, muscle tightness or stress-related discomfort.  It is beneficial to office workers, athletes and busy parents who need posture correction and over-all body maintenance. For new clients, sessions are recommended once a week to correct imbalances, followed by maintenance sessions once or twice a month.

The therapists at Karada go through tedious and extensive  training by Sensei Hiroaki Naruse, FJG International’s Regional Manager and Head Trainer for the Philippines and  the equally skilled Iku Sumiya , Assistant Regional manager and assistant head trainer. This ensures the efficacy and safety of various techniques  and covers  anatomy, physiology, and the challenging AP Balance techniques. Certification is granted only after passing written and practical assessments that are at par with global standards.

“Karada is not a medical clinic,” Stelton says.  It does not cure diseases and injuries in the medical sense.   “It is preventive and supportive therapy.   It provides natural relief because, if there is AP misalignment, it causes chronic pain and discomfort, poor posture, imbalanced movement, mobility issues, fatigue and  potentially contributes  to dizziness,” adds Sensei  Hiro. The AP  Balance Treatment helps address these issues.

Each treatment at Karada begins with a consultation and assessment where the client’s current state, problematic areas or conditions, and limitations in mobility are discussed. It is also during this time that the therapists conduct safety measurements to ensure that the client will not be putting themselves at risk.

    Checking of shorter legAP

The AP Balance Body Treatment is  a skull adjustment that targets your neck and skull to treat your stress at the Atlas. The therapists also loosen stiff muscles with a whole body dry massage and stretching techniques, promoting better blood circulation and preventing pain from recurring. Clients can also avail add-on treatments that target limbs and extremities, extending the relieving touch of Karada’s practitioners.

To treat misalignment, the spine and pelvis are adjusted gently  to promote better balance of the body. Well-trained professional therapists safely use a gentle push and pull mobilization technique to align the spinous process, providing pain relief and satisfaction.

    Consultation

Sensei Hiro addresses misconceptions about cracking and pain, saying “Cracking is not the purpose of the treatment – it is actually a natural sound that can occur during alignment but is not required.  The key goal is alignment and muscle balance, not the cracking sound itself.  It is not a measure if the treatment is effective or not.  Effectiveness comes from proper techniques, not from joint noises.  Our methods are gentle, safe and precise.”

Meanwhile, Karada’s unique deep tissue massages and stretching services  lie in the masterful body weight technique that penetrates deep, working together with Karada’s specially-made beds that allow therapists to massage and stretch your body in different positions that culminate in a release of tension.

Other treatments include: Foot Reflexology, New services that are being introduced are stretch programs, comprehensive  wellness packages (KX Plus) and facial contouring (KOGAO) that combines physical therapy with lifestyle and posture education.

  • THEATER REVIEW — At a Larger Venue, “Bar Boys: The Musical” Reaches Its Full Potential Through Scale

THEATER REVIEW — At a Larger Venue, “Bar Boys: The Musical” Reaches Its Full Potential Through Scale

I’m a fan of “Bar Boys: The Musical,” written by Pat Valera (book and lyrics) and Myke Salomon (lyrics and music), based on the film by Kip Oebanda, and directed by Mikko Angeles, since its two runs at the PowerMac Spotlight Theater in Circuit Makati. It was inspiring, funny, and poignant (I remember crying both times I saw it). The music was great filled with all-new, all-original songs, and the performances were stellar. It was a great show. But now that it has moved to the Hyundai Hall at the Areté Theater, the show has transformed into a big, bold musical where the larger scale amplifies everything that was already great about the production.

In a larger theater, the creative team went all out. The production now features larger set pieces that are wheeled in, a larger video projection on screen right behind the cast as they are performing, more space for its hardworking ensemble to fill, and new heights as the set pieces are as high as two stories allowing the staging to be as tall as its scope is wide.

    Bar Boys The Musical

Now staged on a proscenium, the direction is now fully directed toward the audience rather than contained at the center, as it was in the original traverse staging (a long platform with the audience on both sides). This shift allows the show to fully project its idealism, realism, and inspirational message straight to the crowd for full effect.

    Bar Boys The Musical

“Bar Boys: the Musical” tells the story of four friends – Erik, Chris, Torran, and Josh – who enter law school together with the hopes of changing the world a better place. But each of our leads have their own battles to face. Erik comes from a humble background and money is tight. Chris hides a secret about his background, which also fuels his need to make the world a better place. Torran, raised by a single mother, feels the pressure of living out his mother’s dreams while he is discovering who really is. Josh, who hails from the province, wants to be an environmental lawyer but his idealism gets in the way of the reality of the law.

    Bar Boys The Musical
    Bar Boys The Musical

The show is impressive by being intersectional, tackling various issues like the class divide, the power and the abuse of the law, corruption, acceptance, and waking up to a harsh world; all of this without being scattered or confusing. The narrative has a spot for each of the four characters, a case that becomes the catalyst for the growth of some of the protagonists, all the while portraying the exacting demands of law school and passing the bar.

    Bar Boys The Musical
Bar Boys The Musical | Photo by CJ Ochoa

By giving the ensemble moments to portray other law students, we see the various dreams and hopes that people have that widen the scope of the play. There’s something for everyone here, but it never feels like it is only touching the surface. The emotions that it evokes are not from shallow, easy plot points. The struggle is real. There are scenes and songs that emphasize it so when a loss is felt, it hits hard. When a victory is achieved, that feeling reaches out to the audience in full.

Bar Boys The Musical Photo by CJ Ochoa 6

With a larger space and the audience gathered in one direction, Angeles is able to create spectacles and meant to be witnessed. The actors can now interact more freely, exchanging knowing looks when making throwing politically charged jokes or when a scene feels like it is talking to the audience.

Bar Boys The Musical Photo by Irvin Arenas 8 Large
Bar Boys The Musical | Photo by Irvin Arenas

With the bigness of the theater, the tiniest and most intimate scenes – like the ones shared by Erik and his father or Justice Hernandez, the toughest but most important teacher the lead characters meet – become these powerful turning points that emphasize the narrative beats. In the smaller venue, we feel like voyeur peeking into private moments. On a proscenium stage, we feel permitted to watch allowing us to fully react and feel what these scenes evoke in us to feel.

Bar Boys The Musical Photo by Irvin Arenas 12 Large
Bar Boys The Musical | Photo by Irvin Arenas

Most of the cast from the previous runs have returned, and they wear these roles like a second skin. Alex Diaz, who plays Chris, has a confidence that defines his character, which also makes him a little forceful, leaning into domineering. Jerom Canlas, who plays Torran, is having more fun with the character, working with physicality and gestures to show how his character’s hidden nature is a lot more visible to everyone but himself. Josh is always a fan favourite and Omar Uddin has charm by the boatload and he uses this to fill the stage. Juliene Mendoza, who plays Erik’s father Peping, and Gimbey Dela Cruz, who plays a dual role of Torran’s mother and a lady who Josh befriends, are such solid performers that they help the show hit its most poignant moments.

Bar Boys The Musical Photo by CJ Ochoa 3
Bar Boys The Musical | Photo by CJ Ochoa

But the two who truly rise to the new scale of this production are Benedix Ramos as Erik and Sheila Francisco as Justice Hernandez. Ramos manages to layer his portrayal of Erik in such a way that even his moments of weakness are felt even when he’s keeping it inside. He vascillates from big emotions to small emotions and all of it are picked up on stage that he has the most dynamic of performances. He has such a gift that allows him to work small but can project it big so that its seen and heard and felt all the way to the back of the audience.

    Bar Boys The Musical

Francisco, on the other hand, who has played Justice Hernandez as a wise, older mentor, with a calm energy, now plays her as a rockstar in field of law. She’s brazzy, she’s tough, she’s admired, and she knows it. She comes in like a force of nature and embodies the reason why every character in the play is so in awe of her.

Bar Boys The Musical Photo by Myra Ho 4 Large

So, it’s equally amazing when, in the more somber moments, she becomes a nurturing, tender soul that can inspire the lead characters in their darkest moments. It’s a powerhouse performance that shows, Francisco has been holding it back in the smaller venue in fear of tearing it down with her power.

Bar Boys The Musical Photo by Kyle Venturillo 7 Large
Bar Boys The Musical | Photo by Kyle Venturillo

On opening day, there were a few technical hiccups, and the new ensemble still needed to tighten their choreography and to temper their boundless energy. But these are easily fixed that will naturally smooth out with more performances. Even with these little flaws, the show is already such a triumph of theater. This is how “Bar Boys: The Musical” should be: big and bold. It’s an inspiring play that’s fun and moving and it truly deserves a venue grand enough and a production that can amplify its message to an even larger audience.

    My Rating:

    stars 5 0

Catch Bar Boys The Musical in all its bold, inspiring glory as it takes over Hyundai Hall, Areté until November 23. • MOVIE REVIEW: Uneven But Enjoyable, ‘Near Death’ is Still a Fun Pinoy Horror Film

MOVIE REVIEW: Uneven But Enjoyable, ‘Near Death’ is Still a Fun Pinoy Horror Film

Premiering in SM’s Sine Sindak, director Richard Somes delivers an enjoyable Pinoy horror film with lots of jump scares, frightening imagery, and brutal action in his latest film ‘Near Death.’ This is the kind of film that’s best to watch with your friends or family, screaming at the thrills and scares and having a good time this Halloween season.

    Near Death

‘Near Death’ is about Julia (Charlie Dizon), who is revived after she throws herself off her building. She’s a tortured soul with a dark past that led her to committing suicide but she was quickly brought to the hospital and was saved by the doctors there. She recovers back at home where her sister, Mia (Xyriel Manabat), watches over her as does the security guard of her building, Mang Celso (Soliman Cruz), and a neighbour, Aling Salve (Lotlot De Leon). But when Julia was brought back, something came along with her. Visions of a hellish limbo intrudes into her sight, and she can see ghosts who are trying to take her body. While many don’t believe her, most especially Mia, Aling Salve believes in the supernatural and she finds connection with another survivor of suicide, Lucas (RK Bagatsing).

    Near Death

While the screenplay by Somes and Jim Flores is the weakest part of the film – it has a tendency to meander, introduce characters that don’t serve the story (such as Julia’s boyfriend who appears at the start and never is seen again), it leans too heavily on the drama at times – the film finds its footing through Somes’ understanding of the genre and his deftness at crafting the mood and atmosphere that makes the film dark, heavy, and scary.

Somes exploration into the ghost story is very physical and kinetic. His camerawork, lenses by Luis Quirino, is an active agent in creating the set ups for the jump scares and the frightening scenes. Every place is dark, filled with shadows, and editor Jamie Dumancas allows a seamless flow so when things start to turn violent, everything is caught on camera, displaying the brutality of being haunted by ghosts.

‘Near Death’ explores the paranormal consequences of breaking through to the other side. It doesn’t go too deep into the psychosis of these characters but what it wants to portray is how these dark thoughts stay with us, take physical form, and harm us if we don’t try to get help and find some form of redemption from the trauma that holds us down.

    Near Death 1 2

Dizon, De Leon, and Cruz are wonderful actors that create a sense of believability to the world. They manage to play out the film’s horror in ways that makes it thrilling and exciting but also imbibe the film with a heart that keeps the film centered on the human aspect of the film’s genre. Manabat, unfortunately, has all the high-drama moments and approaches the character at such a high level that it comes off one-dimensional. It’s high-energy that doesn’t build up and could use a bit of nuance in its delivery. On the other hand, Bagatsing is always a reliable actor, but Lucas is an underwritten character and so while Bagatsing is a good sounding board for Dizon, there’s not much he can do to make the character go beyond that of a plot-device. His own agency doesn’t quite come into play in the film.

Regardless of its flaws, ‘Near Death’ is a perfect Pinoy horror film. Under Somes’ strong direction and production design, the film is visually impactful and has all the trappings of a fun time in the theater. This is a good popcorn movie for the Halloween season.

  • Yorgos Lanthimos Reunites with Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons in “Bugonia” — A Dark, Thrilling Tale of Paranoia and Abduction

Yorgos Lanthimos Reunites with Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons in “Bugonia” — A Dark, Thrilling Tale of Paranoia and Abduction

Visionary filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, the acclaimed director behind Poor Things and The Favourite, returns to the big screen with Bugonia — a provocative new thriller that digs into paranoia, conspiracy thinking, and the widening social divides fueled by technology. The film marks his latest collaboration with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, following their acclaimed work together in Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness.

    Bugonia cast

Lanthimos shares that the story is deeply rooted in the way people interpret — and misinterpret — the world around them.

“In the world that we live in now, people live in certain bubbles that have been enhanced by technology,” Lanthimos says. “Having certain ideas about people is reinforced depending on which bubble you live in, creating this big chasm between people. I wanted to challenge the viewer about the things that we’re very certain about, the judgment calls that you make about certain kinds of people. It’s a very interesting reflection of our society and the conflict in our contemporary world.”

A Dangerous Plot Led by Paranoia

In Bugonia, two young men — Teddy (Plemons) and Don (Aidan Delbis) — kidnap Michelle (Stone), a high-profile CEO. Their motive: an unshakeable belief, fueled by online conspiracy theories, that she is an alien intent on destroying Earth. As their panic intensifies inside the confines of a basement, their delusions and shifting perspectives create a warped battleground of fear, confusion, and misplaced conviction.

A Director at the Top of His Craft

Lanthimos is a six-time Academy Award–nominated filmmaker celebrated for his bold visual style and genre-defying stories. His most recent feature, Poor Things, earned the Golden Lion at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, garnered 11 Oscar nominations, and won four — including Best Actress for Emma Stone. His other internationally recognized films include:

    • The Favourite
    • The Lobster
    • The Killing of a Sacred Deer

    A Korean Classic, Reimagined

Bugonia is adapted from the 2003 Korean film Save the Green Planet! Screenwriter Will Tracy reinterpreted the story during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, channeling the period’s intensity and anxieties into the script.

“We were locked-down, and I was probably losing my mind a little bit in this little apartment in Brooklyn,” Tracy says. “I wrote it in about three weeks, and I’ve tried not to analyze it too much, but I’m sure something in that atmosphere made its way into the script – that claustrophobic feeling that I don’t think I would have been able to write if not in those circumstances.”

    An Emotional Roller Coaster

Plemons recalls being struck by the film’s dynamic tone.

“The tone of it is so wild and varying — it’s so funny and so tragic, and the way into these very big conversations is so left-field and unexpected,” says Plemons. “It’s a really strange but honest portrait of the times we’re living in, how confusing and absurd it all is.”

Stone, who also produces the film alongside Lanthimos, describes Bugonia as intimate yet thematically vast.

“It has that sort of microcosmic quality,” says Stone, who produced the film with Lanthimos in their fifth project together. “There’s a sort of insanity and a commentary in the midst of a really small environment, which I think Yorgos tends to be drawn to. We’re in a basement, and it’s really just people talking to each other a lot of the time, having perspectives that feel maybe incorrect or twisted. But they reveal these different versions of humanity and what can happen in a downward spiral of convincing yourself of something.”

    A Cinema-Sized Experience

Lanthimos insists that Bugonia is best seen on the biggest screen possible.

“Most films should be enjoyed like that, in a cinema with other people. It’s a communal experience, but especially this film, the way it’s filmed on VistaVision, a beautiful format, and the sound design that Johnnie Burn has done, along with Jerskin Fendrix’s score,” Lanthimos says. “It’s just a very full and dramatic experience, both in its hilarity and its horror, that can only be experienced fully in a cinema.”

    Coming Soon to Philippine Cinemas

A gripping descent into fear and conviction awaits when Bugonia opens in Philippine theaters November 5.
