Batangas-born fashion designer, Jessan Macatangay, is making international headlines once again after bringing home the coveted L’Oreal Professionnel Womenswear Creative Award during Central Saint Martins’ (CSM) MA Fashion Graduation Show. The said award is bestowed only to CSM’s MA Fashion Class graduates with the best collection. Past winners include Kim Jones, Grace Wales Bonner, Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Molly Goddard, and Craig Green. This year’s judges include British Vogue’s Fashion Director, Julia Sarr-Jamois, Market Editor of WWD, Tianwei Zhang, and Fashion Features Director of I-D, Osman Ahmed.
For the uninitiated, CSM is the same art school that legendary designers Stella McCartney, John Galliano, and Alexander McQueen went to.
Entitled Sculptural Sensuality, Macatangay’s MA graduation collection draws inspiration from women’s inability to express their sensual side due to cultural restraints.

Jessan Macatangay shares, “In our country, where—even in 2022—85% of the population remains to be Roman Catholic, religion and tradition still play major roles in putting restraints on women, especially with how they dress. This is especially true in areas outside Metro Manila. I grew up in Batangas where the prevalent dress code is always modest and conservative. Batangenos are naturally religious people. So religious, in fact, that they allow their beliefs to heavily influence every aspect of their lives.”
“These outdated restrictions are not only thrown at regular women. From celebrities and influencers to models, Filipinas from all walks of life oftentimes find themselves being subjected to bashing, unnecessary judgment, and being told to cover up when they post photos of themselves wearing clothes that do not conform to conservative standards of generations past. In fact, growing up, I even saw women wear t-shirts over their bikinis while swimming just to cover up. This is where my project started—from the fear and discomfort of showing skin. Could there be a way to make women let go of this fear?”
Lookbook & Campaign Photos by Han Yang
Sculptural Sensuality is composed of eight pieces in total—six of which made it to Jessan Macatangay’s MA Fashion Show. For each piece, Macatangay combined various types of jerseys that he stretched using wired frames to mimic a swimsuit’s outline. And the results are nothing short of amazing. Clean lines and silhouettes accentuate the wearer’s body in colors that border between bold and muted. The collection itself is very feminine and sensual yet avant-garde.
The way that Macatangay manipulated his chosen fabric to bring out the exact shades and shapes he want proves the level of his craftsmanship as well as his attention to detail.
“This collection is about making society realize that a woman is more than her body. Clothes exist to accentuate the feminine figure and showcase it in its most lustrous light. I really want to create pieces for women who adore sensuality without fearing sexuality; and for women who long to relax on the beach with her swimsuit, legs and arms sun-kissed, and exposed for all the world to adore (not judge). She does not want to cover up with a t-shirt while on the beach. She wants to be free.”
This year’s Central Saint Martins MA Graduation show marks the much-awaited event’s return to the catwalk since the breakout of the Covid-19 pandemic. To know more about Jessan Macatangay, you may follow his Instagram account @jessanmacatangay or visit www.jessanmacatangay.com.
Earth Day, an annual event happening every April 22 since 1970, puts the focus on the need for a global and systemic change to foster and promote environmental protection. Robinsons Malls joins this movement through various activities to raise awareness and encourage mallgoers to heed the call to save Mother Earth.
“Robinsons Malls has always been committed to expanding our sustainability efforts, especially amid climate change and the various environmental challenges we face today. On top of our large-scale efforts as a company, we want to bring earth-friendly initiatives to our malls to help educate and inspire the public to embrace sustainability as well,” shares Arlene Magtibay, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Robinsons Malls.
Here are the many ways that mall-goers can celebrate Earth Day in Robinsons Malls:
Trash to Cashback Program
Plastic pollution is one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues, especially with the increased production and accumulation of single-use plastic. In partnership with BEST (Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc), Trash to Cashback Program encourages people to segregate their trash and bring their recyclables to the malls, which is a more convenient way to participate in the initiative instead of having to go to a warehouse or a recycling hub. From April 22 to 23, mall-goers can exchange their trash for “Environmental Points” (EP), which can be used to redeem products or services from BEST partner merchants. All they have to do is bring their recyclables to Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City, Robinsons Town Mall Malabon and Robinsons Otis in Manila City. These recyclables are collected and delivered to recycling and upcycling partners through the My Basurero mobile app. Recyclables will be processed and returned to the supply chain as raw materials or products with a new purpose.
Robinsons Malls Recycling Market at Robinsons Novaliches encourages its shoppers and tenants to actively participate and contribute in saving our Mother Earth through recycling.
Recycling Market at Robinsons Novaliches
Another effort to curb the plastic problem is through Robinsons Novaliches’ Recycling Market. The Quezon City mall is enhancing this program, which was first introduced in 2017, to allow mall-goers to exchange recyclable materials for cash. Available every last Friday and Saturday of the month at the mall’s designated area, customers can exchange various kinds of paper (newspaper, white and colored paper, magazines, cartons), plastic (PET bottles, packaging plastics, hard plastics, PVC tubings), metal (scrap iron, packaging cans, aluminum, copper), and glass items (packaging bottles, beer, and liquor bottles) for cash.
Plastic Bank Experience Hub at Robinsons Place Naga
Aside from exchanging trash for cash (or EP points), Robinsons Malls takes things further by educating mall-goers about the importance of recycling and upcycling through the Plastic Bank Experience Hub. The space showcases how plastic waste is transformed into everyday items, such as eco-bricks that can be used to build homes and schools, as raw materials for manufacturing bags and bottles, and as fuel for powering generators. It is also open to accepting recyclable materials. The Plastic Bank Experience Hub is located at the Robinsons Place Naga’s Atrium until April 27.
Robinsons Malls in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), United Nations Habitat for A Better Urban Future (UN Habitat), local government unit of Naga, Naga City People’s Council (NCPC), and Institute for Environmental Conservation and Research – Ateneo de Naga University educates mall-goers about the importance of recycling and upcycling through the Plastic Bank Experience Hub.

Free Eco-Bags
To minimize the use of plastic, participating Robinsons Malls branches are giving away free eco-bags to shoppers from April 22 to 29. Customers can also get free eco-bags when shopping through Robinsons Malls’ personal shopper service, Robbie and Rosie, for a minimum purchase.
Free Loam Soil at Robinsons Place Antipolo
Robinsons Malls is also letting mall-goers hit two birds with one stone, which—in this case—is recycling and planting. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on April 22, people can exchange used plastic bottles (1.5 litre or 5 litres) for free loam soil at the Fun Park at Robinsons Place Antipolo. The Bureau of Plant Industry is also giving away free seeds and seedlings in exchange for recyclable plastics.
Saving the environment is a global effort. Robinsons Malls will continue to do its part in creating awareness, implementing sustainable and high-impact environment programs, and partnering with relevant and like-minded organizations to encourage more people to do their share. Celebrate Earth Day at Robinsons Malls because it is #REarthRPlace.

As a concluding celebration for Women’s Month, YouTube will be holding a virtual gathering of inspiring Filipina content creators to celebrate their stories of breaking the bias online and beyond. The free public event will be streamed live on March 30, 2022, 8:00 PM via Google’s YouTube and Facebook pages, hosted by artist and television host Nikki Gil-Albert.
Explaining the wisdom behind the event’s local theme #AskHerFirst, Google Philippines Country Director Bernadette Nacario shares: “We believe that in order for us #BreakTheBias, one of the steps we have to take is to #AskHerFirst. Through this, we emphasize the value of asking women first–as a sign of respect and acknowledgment and to stop assumptions and preconceived notions. The simple habit of asking, rather than assuming, can lead more women to realizing their full potential and succeeding in what they choose to do.”
Staying true to its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, YouTube gathers a range of Filipina content creators from across walks of life who will tackle the different struggles women experience because of gender-based biases. They will also share how the recognition of women’s abilities and capabilities can help them succeed and make a difference in the community.
Joining the discussion are Maranao-Muslim digital creator and filmmaker Egypa Balindong; beauty vlogger and body positivity champion Helen On Fleek; entrepreneur, mentor, and PWD advocate Jozelle Tech; and work-from-home businesswoman and momfluencerRookie Mommy PH.

School pride returns to its fighting form as mobile services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) enable all fans to stream the games on the GigaPlay app for FREE – with absolutely no subscription fees or data charges for a limited period only.
As part of its thrust of allowing the youth to pursue their passions while living the life they love, fans won’t have a reason to miss the action-packed games while rooting for their favorite teams and players as Smart makes it easier for students to ease right back into their school pride and team spirit.
GigaPlay is set to stream select UAAP games for FREE, starting with the elimination round of the UAAP Men’s Basketball tournament. The tip-off game will feature the “Battle of Katipunan” in UP VS ADMU on March 26 at 4PM.
The succeeding games are scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays following the quadruple-header format, meaning all universities will have one game per day in the double round robin eliminations.
UAAP Volleyball and Cheerdance up next
GigaPlay is also set to offer FREE streaming of the UAAP Volleyball eliminations and the UAAP Cheerdance competition, which are both scheduled in May.
To enjoy free streaming on GigaPlay, Smart subscribers must simply download the GigaPlay on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, set up an account, and watch their preferred game on the GigaPlay content lineup while connected to Smart mobile data or PLDT Home WiFi – without worrying about data charges.
Recognizing that most students are still supporting their schools remotely and live audiences are not allowed during the live games, Smart plays a crucial role in delivering real-time UAAP action to subscribers and sports fans.
The UAAP coverage further boosts GigaPlay’s lineup of sports content, which include streaming of the NBA, PBA, PVL, and FIBA games.
GigaPlay is powered by Smart, the country’s fastest 5G mobile network, as reported by Ookla, the global leader in mobile and broadband intelligence.
