Die Beautiful, Victorina, Teorya: IdeaFirst Live unveils 2027–28 Season of Original Filipino Theater

The theater arm of The IdeaFirst Company unveiled its ambitious 2027–28 season on October 25, headlined by Die Beautiful: The Musical, Victorina, and Teorya ng Mga Tanong; three distinctly different productions united by a commitment to original Filipino storytelling.

    DB FA WEB

Following its successful stage adaptations of Anino sa Likod ng Buwan and About Us But Not About Us, IdeaFirst Live revealed new original works developed specifically for the theater, bringing together some of the country’s most celebrated actors, writers, and directors.

Opening the season in June 2027 at the Proscenium Theater is Die Beautiful: The Musical, a spectacular reimagining of the internationally-celebrated film about beauty, identity, resilience, and chosen family.  Directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio, with new book and lyrics co-written by Jun Robles Lana and Elmer Gatchalian, the production features Audie Gemora, Karylle, Esang de Torres, Maxie Andreison, Viñas Deluxe, Lance Reblando, and Chamyto.

    Victorina FA

In October 2027, internationally awarded actress Eugene Domingo returns to the stage as Victorina, a new play written by Jun Robles Lana and directed by Chris Martinez.  Inspired by the infamous Doña Victorina of José Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, this biting comedy puts Philippine literature’s ultimate social climber center stage to challenge conventions and rewrite history in her own unique way.

Coming in March 2028 is Teorya ng Mga Tanong, reuniting Romnick Sarmenta, Elijah Canlas, and Epy Quizonfollowing their celebrated performances in About Us But Not About Us.  In an intriguing meta-theatrical twist, the three actors now step into the very novel their characters once argued about.  Written by Jun Robles Lana and directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio, the play promises a provocative exploration of the boundaries between fiction and reality.

    Teorya FA

IdeaFirst Live also teased a fourth original production currently in development, hinting at an unconventional theatrical experience that will challenge not only the stories being told but how audiences experience them.

The announcement also marked the launch of THE FIRST LIST, IdeaFirst Live’s new audience membership program offering priority ticket booking, exclusive previews, special invitations, and other privileges.  Registration opens October 25 at the event venue and through The IdeaFirst Company’s website: theideafirstcompany.com.

With its 2027–2028 season, IdeaFirst Live takes a major step in its evolution from adapting films for the stage to creating distinctive theatrical experiences that celebrate Filipino talent, imagination, and storytelling. Original Stories. • Migrant Workers Film Festival Brings Decades of Stories Home

Migrant Workers Film Festival Brings Decades of Stories Home

The 2026 Migrant Workers Film Festival has opened conversations about what it means to leave the country, during its Philippine leg screenings across university auditoriums, cultural centers, and film labs.

Following its run in Hong Kong, the festival has turned its lenses toward the complex web of labor, displacement, family sacrifice, and resilience that defines the Filipino diaspora.

    Rose Roque
PUP Department of Filipinology Assoc. Prof. Rose Roque

The event, organized as a cultural and educational initiative by the Concerned Artists of the Philippines with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, featured a curated lineup spanning nearly four decades of migration cinema.

The program included “Migrante” (AsiaVisions, 1987), “Modern Heroes, Modern Slaves” (Marie Boti and Michelle Smith, 1997), “Rhose” (Nawruz Paguidopon, 2008), “Rhose, Where Do Your Dreams Go?” (Paguidopon, 2012), “Ang Walang Kapagurang Paglalakbay ng Pulang Maleta” (Richard Soriano Legaspi, 2014), and “Gusto Nang Umuwi ni Joy” (Jan Tristan Pandy, 2014).

    Migrante talkback session 1
    Migrante talkback session

The festival’s footprint has stretched across multiple institutions, creating spaces for students, artists, and migrant advocates to engage with audiovisual heritage.

The Philippine run kicked off last October 1 and 2 at the UPFI Film Center Videotheque, featuring screenings paired with talkback sessions featuring CAP National Secretary General Edge Uyanguren, Migrante International Deputy Secretary General Josefina Pingkihan, and filmmakers Nawruz Paguidopon, JT Pandy, and Richard Soriano Legaspi.

Ang Walang Kapagurang Paglalakbay ng Pulang Maleta

On October 7, audiences gathered at Lawak Sinehan in UP Cebu to trace generations of migration narratives in partnership with local academic unions and community groups.

As part of the Ateneo Art Gallery’s Moving Image Program last October 8, a special screening of the 1987 landmark documentary “Migrante” was held at the gallery’s Ben Chan ArtSuite.

    Migrante screening at Ateneo

Screenings also took place at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Bulwagang Bonifacio last October 9 and PUP Claro M. Recto Hall last October 13, drawing deep engagement from the university’s academic community.

On October 20, screenings at UP Los Baños Makiling Film Laboratory featured a dedicated focus on Paguidopon’s “Rhose” series, along with works by Legaspi and Pandy.

    Gusto Nang Umuwi Ni Joy

The festival landed at the Mowelfund Center last October 21 for afternoon screenings of “Migrante” and “Modern Heroes, Modern Slaves,” paired with reflections from invited speakers.

What sets the event apart was how it treated cinema as a catalyst for dialogue. Each screening was followed by talkbacks that bridged historical documentation with present-day realities.

During the Ateneo Art Gallery session, moderated by PUP Department of Filipinology Assoc. Prof. Rose Roque, Migrante International Chairperson Joanna Concepcion pointed out the truth that the fundamental conditions driving Filipinos abroad have barely shifted in the 39 years since “Migrante” was first released. Concepcion underscored how the state’s labor export policy continues to treat citizens as commodities, directly contradicting official rhetoric surrounding workers’ welfare.

Gusto Nang Umuwi Ni Joy still photo

CAP Deputy Secretary-General Jeune Genesis Aramburo echoed this statement and reiterated the call to address the root causes of forced migration. Aramburo noted that if Filipino industriousness has built and sustained prosperity in foreign lands, the ultimate challenge remains transforming domestic conditions so that workers are met with livable wages and dignity at home.

By merging archival memory with contemporary struggle, the Migrant Workers Film Festival made sure that the stories of those who cross borders are neither silenced nor forgotten, reminding audiences that the fight for migrant rights extends far beyond the final credits.

  • Nike’s After Dark Tour Collection Rewrites Performance as a Style Identity

Nike’s After Dark Tour Collection Rewrites Performance as a Style Identity

Run or runway? Why not have both? Over 400 female runners gathered last night as Nike The Fort became a run-way. The launch of Nike After Dark Tour (ADT) Collection was celebrated with a fashion-forward running-inspired runway showcase, surprise athlete appearances, and a community run.

    2 ADT Gear Up

Run culture around the world is redefining what it means to dress for running, having performance product merge with style and identity. What she wears to the start line now says as much about her as her finish time: who she is, who she runs with and the community she has made her own.

    3 ADT Gear Up

Nike’s ADT run-way, styled by renowned Filipina stylist Lyn Alumno, was curated with this in mind and hopes to inspire Filipina runners to blur the lines and embrace self-expression through their looks on and off the racecourse.  Athletes Pauline Lopez and Kim Mangrobang lead the line up, alongside Nike Run Coaches, pacers and leaders of the run community such as Ashley Cayuca, as well as notable sports personalities such as Filipino volleyball icon Alyssa Valdez and yoga teacher Joanne Villablanca-Veridiano, ultimately showcasing the union of performance and style, while celebrating the Manila community. Some looks went bold in head-to-toe hyper pink. Others mixed and layered for an easy, after-run edge. No two looks were the same, and that was the point.

“My creative vision was centered on identity and on women, because this is a safe space for women like us. The clothes have to adapt to you, the movement has to go with you, and not the other way around. If you wear something uncomfortable, it definitely shows, and of course with running everything has to fit perfectly. It’s about being yourself, and just doing it.”  – Lyn Alumno

    4 ADT Gear Up

At the heart of the looks was the Nike After Dark Tour Collection, featuring performance-ready apparel alongside playful lifestyle looks, all designed to help athletes feel confident and comfortable from the start to finish line, and beyond.

The collection features a distinct hyper-pink colorway as the showstopper, mixed with black, grey and white options providing choice for styling bold head-to-toe color block looks, or unique mix and match layering. The generous range of shorts, tights, sports bras, crops, tees, sleeveless, rugby-style pull overs, and hoodies, mean the personalization options are endless.

    5 ADT Gear Up

While the colors offer choice, the bold ADT graphics are instantly recognizable, a nod to the cities of the global tour, connecting all runners as one global community.

To complete the look, Nike’s road running footwear including the Alphafly 4, Pegasus Plus 2, Pegasus 42, Zoom Fly 6, in ADT-specific colorways mean runners won’t only be looking fast, but will be running fast too.

“Before I thought that when I was running, I wasn’t allowed to be all [about] fashion. But now, it’s a fashion statement — you just show up and be yourself! I always go by if you feel good, you look good, you perform good.” — Nike Athlete, Pauline Lopez

After the show, host-creator Silvana Rauch joined Lyn and Ashley on stage to talk about what to wear on race day: how to balance performance, comfort and personal style when you step onto the course on 21 November.

    6 ADT Gear Up

“I started running because I was going through a difficult time in my life. I just wanted to get out, I just wanted to move, clear my head, and feel better. When Just Show Up Club started, I began getting messages from people with love and gratitude, thanking me for building this community. That’s when I realized that this is more than just fitness. It’s bigger than running. Community is so important because a person gains more confidence when you feel supported.”  — Ashley Cayuca

“What keeps me coming back to ADT is really the community. I don’t think anybody would stay in a space for a long period of time if you don’t enjoy the people you get to be with. Training with these women just feels amazing. I always go home with a huge smile on my face.”  — Silvana Rauch

With ADT Manila race night exactly one month away, the experience was kicked off with a 3km community run led by Nike Run Coaches Ra Teano and Bianca Ramos. The run was a chance to continue to build towards race night performance while also continuing to build connections with other runners. From warm up to cool down, the energy reflected the excitement and sense of community that have come to define the ADT experience in Manila and around the world.

” A non-negotiable: don’t try anything new on race day. We have four weeks to go, so I would recommend trying out different pieces to form your race day fit! This is your opportunity, so try them on as early as now. Find something comfortable. Find something fun that’s going to help inspire and motivate you. It’s all about comfort, reliability, and style.” — Nike Run Coach Ra Teano

The ADT Manila is on November 21, 2026, and slots are all sold out. The run kicks off in the evening at Roxas Boulevard, snaking its way through landmarks such as the National Museum, Jones Bridge, and Intramuros, before finally finishing at the Quirino Grandstand. Can’t be part of the race? You can still come and cheer for the women winning the night from the sidelines, and you can also sign up for the Nike Run Club and download the app to be a part of the Nike running community.

One month to go. Manila, get ready to run with puso.

  • Meet Sari Kitchen: your new neighborhood destination for Asian comfort food

Meet Sari Kitchen: your new neighborhood destination for Asian comfort food

From familiar Filipino comfort food to sumptuous flavors from Thailand and across Asia, Sari Kitchen is shaking up Makati’s dining and nightlife scene with a refreshed identity, a more focused menu, and a renewed vision for what a neighborhood restaurant can be.

Formerly known as Thai Mookata, the restaurant has moved away from its original Thai hot pot and grill concept to embrace a broader culinary direction built around accessibility and discovery. Guided by the tagline “Your Neighborhood Asian Kitchen,” Sari Kitchen combines Filipino and Thai staples with Asian fusion-style dishes in a welcoming space for everyday meals, after-work gatherings, and long evenings with friends and family.

    image 2

The rebrand, according to co-owners Ely Buendia, Pat Sarabia, and Audry Dionisio aligns with their collective and individual tastes and with the natural progression of what Sari Kitchen has become: a contemporary nightlife and dining hub specializing in Asian comfort food.

“For a year we’ve tried to really not change anything at all since we took over the place, but we decided it was time to make a change when we saw who was going to Sari,” Ely Buendia explains. “And let’s face it, nobody was familiar with Mookata.”

For Sarabia, the new name offers a more distinctly Filipino identity while strengthening the restaurant’s relationship with Sari-Sari Bar, its intimate bar tucked within the establishment. “We wanted something more accessible and Filipino, and feel that it aligns more with the branding of Sari Sari bar,” she says.

Dionisio adds that the transformation also creates room to move beyond a concept inherited from the previous ownership. “Thai Mookata gave us a great starting point and taught us a lot about the food and beverage business and the kind of dining experience our guests respond to. Over time, though, we realized that we wanted more room to explore beyond one cuisine or style of dining. Also, Thai Mookata was a concept of the previous owner, so we wanted to change it to something that was more us.”

    image 1

A broader culinary identity, grounded in comfort

While Thai Mookata is focused on a specific cuisine and the communal experience of hot pot and grilling, Sari Kitchen now takes on a more specialized approach to Asian dining. Its identity is defined not by one culinary tradition but by what emerges when familiar flavors, personal experiences, and regional influences come together.

The shift, according to the owners, is about creating a cohesive menu that people recognize and crave, alongside interpretations that introduce something unexpected without sacrificing familiarity.

“The biggest difference is freedom,” Dionisio says. “Thai Mookata naturally operated within a very specific culinary identity. With Sari Kitchen, we’re able to look across Asia for inspiration, from flavors and dishes we grew up eating to things we’ve discovered through travel, restaurants, street food, and our own experiences.”

In developing the menu, the team focused on a simple but personal question: Would they genuinely want to eat the dishes themselves?

Dionisio relates, “We didn’t want to create dishes just because they sounded inventive. There still has to be familiarity and comfort at the heart of the menu. The goal is for the menu to feel exciting without being complicated.”

The newly improved selection veers away from the predecessor’s unli-buffet format. With options better tailored to individuals and couples, Sari Kitchen lets diners choose their own dishes, discover personal favorites, and return for something different on their next visit.

    Your neighborhood Asian kitchen

Integral to Sari Kitchen’s rebrand is the idea that good food doesn’t need an occasion. Instead of positioning itself solely as a destination for a particular dining experience, the restaurant aims to become a familiar neighborhood fixture for spontaneous meals, post-work decompression, casual drinks, and conversations that extend well beyond dinner.

“Well, it’s right there in the tagline: it’s an unassuming and unpretentious place,” Buendia says. “We want diners to be surprised and delighted to find something like this in the neighborhood.”

For Sarabia, that means becoming the neighborhood’s after-work watering hole and go-to comfort-food destination. Dionisio imagines an even more personal role for the restaurant: a space that feels like an extension of home, where guests can talk about their day, laugh, disagree, celebrate, and simply enjoy each other’s company.

“You can drop by for a casual meal, bring your family, meet friends for dinner, have a few drinks, kill traffic, or discover something new on the menu without the experience ever feeling intimidating or overly formal,” she says.

Beyond the plate: a space to settle into

Moving away from the bright lights and stainless-steel aesthetic of its previous incarnation, Sari Kitchen pivots toward a warmer, more relaxed environment, letting guests experience the space with openness. The intention is to create a space that feels lived-in rather than overly designed, balancing the energy of a social gathering place with the comfort of a familiar neighborhood staple.

Sarabia also highlights a distinctly communal element of the restaurant’s social experience: karaoke, a familiar fixture at Filipino gatherings with friends and family. The addition reinforces Sari Kitchen’s focus on shared experiences, where dining gives way to singing, conversation, and spontaneous celebrations.

“We want the entire experience to reflect the idea of your family’s own kitchen, like having your friends over,” Dionisio says. “We want guests to feel like they can settle in rather than simply eat and leave.”

Sari-Sari Bar: keeping the creative spirit alive

An integral part of the establishment’s identity is Sari-Sari Bar, an intimate space within the restaurant that has built its own following—thanks to live jazz sessions,  production nights, and film-centered gatherings. As Sari Kitchen enters its next chapter, the bar remains an important expression of the venue’s commitment to culture, creativity, and community.

Its programming, including themed trivia events such as Cinephile Nights, reflects the owners’ interest in bringing people together through communal, family-style experiences. Plans include more trivia and game nights, alongside the bar’s continuing mix of music-led and film-oriented events.

“We were always on the lookout for new and exciting experiences at Sari Bar. And that’s not going to change any time soon,” Buendia says.

Rather than overhaul the bar’s identity, the team intends to build on what already works while exploring new ways to bring people together. The restaurant and bar work together to offer different experiences under one roof: a satisfying meal, a casual drink, a night of music, or an evening spent discovering something new.

Together, Sari Kitchen and Sari-Sari Bar anchor a larger vision of hospitality that treats food, culture, and community as connected parts of the same experience.

    image 1 1

A place to keep coming back to

As Sari Kitchen settles into its new identity, its ambitions remain grounded in the everyday pleasures of dining out. The goal is not simply to introduce a new name or a wider menu, but to establish a lasting place in the neighborhood’s social and culinary landscape.

For Buendia, the aspiration is simply straightforward: to become the area’s dependable destination for great, affordable food. For Sarabia, success also means creating a setting where people can build happy memories, forge new friendships, and strengthen existing relationships. Dionisio shares that long-term vision, seeing Sari Kitchen as a place that can accommodate the many rhythms of everyday life—from quick meals and after-work drinks to spontaneous reunions and evenings that unfold without a plan.

With its refreshed identity, more expansive culinary direction, and continued commitment to creative programming, Sari Kitchen invites Makati diners to discover a neighborhood kitchen that feels familiar from the first visit and gives them a reason to return.

    From Kuala Lumpur to Manila

The collaboration builds on a recent milestone for Goldsboro Books in Asia. Just this August 27, 2026, the bookseller opened The Goldsboro Room, its first permanent home outside the United Kingdom. Located at The Library by BookXcess in Sunway Square Mall, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the dedicated space brings Goldsboro’s signature selection closer to Asian readers. Big Bad Wolf Books co-founders Jacqueline Ng and Andrew Yap helped make all this possible and are now extending the excitement to Manila, giving Filipino readers a chance to discover these books locally.

For Jacqueline and Andrew, the collaboration reflects their commitment to making a wider variety of books accessible to more readers, from everyday reads to rare editions worth keeping for years.

“Part of the joy of a book sale is discovering something you didn’t expect to find, whether it’s a title you’ll want to keep for years to come or a special edition that would make a meaningful gift for someone else. Through our collaboration with Goldsboro Books, we are able to bring these special editions to Manila. We hope Filipino readers and collectors will enjoy discovering these titles and find something they’ll want to keep for years to come,” said Jacqueline Ng, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Big Bad Wolf Books. “Looking ahead, we also hope to bring The Goldsboro Room concept, which was introduced in Kuala Lumpur, to the Philippines.”
