  • TELUS International Philippines celebrates spaces that uplift LGBTQIA2S+ community during Pride Month and beyond

TELUS International Philippines, a leading digitally-enabled customer experience and business process solutions provider, continues to reinforce its enduring commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by creating spaces where the LGBTQIA2S+ community can thrive, celebrate their passions, and bring their authentic selves to work.

Showing how drag performances can be a liberating form of self-expression, emerging drag artists Savvy Tan, crowned winner as “Anak ng Mudra”, Alpha Venti, one of the few drag kings in the Philippine drag scene, and TELUS International Philippines’ very own Ms. Jamie, delighted the crowd with their performances at Butterboy Bakehouse in Quezon City.

In honor of Pride Month, the company has once again organized a range of activities for team members who are part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and their allies.

“In line with our vision to be a global leader in diversity and inclusion, we actively strive to empower our team members to bring their true selves to work and to become strong LGBTQIA2S+ allies,” said Pia Gajasan, Brand and Communications Senior Manager for Asia Pacific at TELUS International. “We proudly support Spectrum Philippines, our employee resource group for LGBTQIA2S+ team members, and work closely with them to ensure that we are growing our diverse talented team, cultivating an inclusive culture, from recruitment, onboarding, and across all stages of their career.”

“There is strength in diversity. Workplaces can be more open to every form of self expression,” is the common theme of the discussion among drag performers (left to right) Bogs Orial, Ms. Jamie, Savvy Tan, and Alpha Venti

Empowering LGBTQIA2S+ members in local drag scene

In collaboration with Spectrum Philippines, TELUS International Philippines recently hosted a drag brunch to celebrate the LGBTQIA2S+ community while showcasing emerging local drag kings and queens, including Alpha Venti Savvy Tan, and TELUS International team member, Miss Jamie. This event is an extension of the company’s annual pride tradition, “Ready, Set, Drag,” an internal drag competition held across all of their sites.

Communications Associate Jamie Amorante is a transwoman who also goes by the name Miss Jamie when performing. Her career journey serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to creating an inclusive workplace. Initially joining TELUS International Philippines as an associate on a major client account, Jamie earned a promotion after one year and received full support from her supervisors to join the communications team three years later.

“The company has consistently shown support towards both my drag persona and my career growth. I feel incredibly fortunate to have team members, leaders, and managers who actively support me as well as other LGBTQIA2S+ people in the company,” said Miss Jamie.

Assigned female at birth (AFAB) drag king Alpha Venti and AFAB drag queen Savvy Tan are carving out spaces for gender minorities and women in the drag world.

Alpha Venti identifies as a non-binary genderfluid and constantly struggles with sexist remarks from people who do not align with his identity.

“I feel empowered to be my best self whenever I perform in drag, fueled by the hope that someday, I won’t be the only one doing what I do. Because there are less than a handful of drag kings in the scene right now, I give my best whenever I perform so that I can inspire other baby drag kings and AFAB artists to be their best alongside me,” Alpha Venti shared.

Diversity, equality, and inclusivity must be consistent from recruitment to onboarding of team members. Learning and Development Senior Manager Dr. Vic Catanghal emphasizes that people leaders at TELUS International Philippines are trained and equipped to cultivate growth of team members regardless of their gender, race, or background

Meanwhile, Savvy Tan embarked on her drag journey in the competition series Mudrakels, where she won as part of a drag mother-daughter duo. However, as a femme-presenting lesbian, she faces constant pressure from people, especially cis-hetero men who attempt to invalidate or alter her identity based on her appearance.

“Seeing trailblazers defy societal expectations and thrive on their own terms reminds me that I too possess the power to break barriers and forge my own path towards success. As a young AFAB drag artist, what makes me feel empowered to be my best self is the transformative power of drag itself. It allows me to tap into a version of myself that radiates confidence, creativity, and self-expression,” she revealed.

Communications Senior Manager for APAC from TELUS International Pia Gajasan explains that diversity is not just about race, gender identity or background. Encouraging and fostering diversity of thought and ideas are equally important practices at TELUS International Philippines.

Fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment

Beyond celebrating Pride Month, TELUS International Philippines and Spectrum Philippines prioritize establishing systems that enable LGBTQIA2S+ team members to feel valued and supported. This includes having self-identified male and female, and gender-neutral restrooms and sleeping quarters across all sites, and offering benefits that extend to the same-sex and domestic partners of team members, including their HMO, continuing education and insurance programs.

“Alongside Spectrum Philippines, we have been conducting HIV awareness sessions and counseling with free testing across our sites. We also recently organized several SOGIE 101 training sessions,” said Dr. Vic Catanghal, Senior Manager for Learning and Development at TELUS International Philippines.

These diversity and inclusion practices also apply to the career growth opportunities for team members, as TELUS International Philippines’ recruitment and promotion processes follow fair guidelines, focusing on skills, competencies, experience, and competencies of the team members and applicants.

“Our recruiters and HR partners participate in regular training and certification programs on diversity and inclusion. Additionally, all people leaders at TELUS International Philippines undergo comprehensive training on SOGIE 101, gender sensitivity, and creating a respectful workplace environment,” said Dr. Catanghal.

Additionally, TELUS International Philippines has various team member resource groups that provide support to team members through mentoring, networking, peer support, volunteering, and coaching opportunities. This includes Spectrum Philippines, Connections, the women’s network of TELUS International, and multicultural team member resource group MOSAIC.

  • Tom Cruise and Christopher Mcquarrie team up again for their biggest Mission yet in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One”

“It’s absolutely that,” says Tom Cruise, who reprises his now iconic role of Ethan Hunt in the film, which he also produces. “People who haven’t seen the other Missions are going to enjoy this one as a standalone experience. And the people who have seen all the other Missions will have a whole other insight into it. The story we have is very special.”

According to director-producer-writer Christopher McQuarrie, back at the helm to direct his fourth Mission: Impossible movie, the key to crafting that story is the emotion. “Everything that you are seeing in this movie is Tom and I focused on two things simultaneously. There is the action that we owe you because you’re coming to see a Mission: Impossible movie, and there’s the emotion that makes that action worth doing,” he says.

Dead Reckoning Part One sees Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his IMF (Impossible Missions Force) team on their most dangerous mission yet – trying to save the world from a mysterious, all-powerful enemy with the power to control the way humanity perceives reality. “The stakes in this story are as global as global stakes get,” notes McQuarrie.

It takes as its title an old maritime term. “In navigation, ‘dead reckoning’ is the process by which you calculate your course based solely on your last known position,” McQuarrie says. “You’re essentially flying blind. And that becomes quite the metaphor, not only for Ethan, but for several key characters.”

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One

“This is the first time we’ve ever split a Mission: Impossible story over two movies,” says Cruise of Dead Reckoning, Part One of which opens in cinemas July 12, while Part Two is scheduled for release next year. “It’s something we’ve never attempted before because of the complexity of these stories. The scale of these two movies is epic in every sense.”

Cruise remembers the moment the idea first started forming while he and McQuarrie were shooting another ground-breaking Cruise sequel scripted by McQuarrie, which the two also produced: “We were shooting Top Gun: Maverick and we started to talk about Mission. McQ said, ‘We have to make a back-to-back.’ And that really got me,” Cruise says, “because I’ve never done a back-to-back and I like learning new things. So when he said that it was very much like, ‘Yes, okay…’”

They knew it would be challenging. “But we also knew it would be interesting,” Cruise counters. “I’d wanted to build up this franchise to the stage where we are today, where it’s like, ‘Now I feel that we’ve earned this moment, to be able to blow it out on this scale.’”

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One

“We often like to say we’re not competing with anybody but ourselves. We’re looking at the last film and figuring how can we outdo that?,” McQuarrie adds. “The sense of scale becomes bigger with each movie and the sense of limitations becomes that much smaller. You just become a little bit more adventurous every time.”

  • Sea a Whole New World With Dreamworks’ New Young Hero “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” to Make Waves in Local Cinemas on June 28

“Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a quirky teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.  The kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the kraken for eons.

Surfing through high school while trying to hide her true identity, Ruby, the eldest child of the Gillman clan and champion mathlete, might not be the coolest girl in school, but she is loved by her mega-selling realtor mom Agatha (played by Oscar® nominee Toni Collette, Knives Out) and laid-back supportive dad Arthur (Colman Domingo); even her little brother Sam (Blue Chapman) thinks she’s ok.

    Lana Condor as Ruby Gillman

Lana Condor, the rising young star who won the hearts of audiences in the 2018 teenage rom com To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, also found much to admire in Ruby, and she was thrilled to explore all of Ruby’s wonderful quirkiness playing the film’s title character. “Ruby is wildly earnest, and she has a very big heart,” Condor says. “She really values her friends, her family and her community. She is truly a good person. She’s wildly genuine, optimistic and steadfast. She’s quirky and shy and really wants to just be with her friends.”

Still, Ruby, ever the confrontation-avoider, always obeys her mom—until an embarrassing prom-posal goes awry and Ruby jumps into the ocean to rescue Connor from drowning. To her great astonishment, Ruby transforms beneath the water into a giant kraken. Realizing that her mother hasn’t told her the whole truth about their family, Ruby begins looking for answers about who she really is. Her search leads her to form an ill-advised friendship with Chelsea, who has a secret agenda of her own, and to bond with her larger-than-life Grandmamah, the kraken Queen (Academy Award® winner Jane Fonda) who is only too eager to see Ruby become her successor. But before she can assume the throne, Ruby has a lot to learn. She must find a way to overcome her inner doubt and to come to love and accept herself for who she is, no matter where she is. Only then can she become the authentic hero she was meant to be.

  • Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman play hilarious opposites in raunchy comedy “No Hard Feelings”

Jennifer Lawrence has always wanted to make a comedy, but she just couldn’t find the right one.

    Enter No Hard Feelings.

For Lawrence, it was a pleasure to do “something totally different… a totally different genre, with fun scenes and ridiculous dialogue that got me excited! Shooting this movie, alongside a brilliant and hilarious cast, was so much fun.”

    NHF UK Premiere 03 P2 0072 bfSV3GGJ

One of those castmates is Andrew Barth Feldman, who plays the socially awkward Percy, whose wealthy helicopter parents post a job listing looking for someone to “date” their introverted son before he leaves for college. This is the job listing that Lawrence’s Maddie responds to so she can save her childhood home.

Watch the red band trailer here below :

The filmmakers thought that the role of Percy might be difficult to cast – and indeed, they conducted an extensive casting process – but one candidate kept rising to the top: Broadway breakthrough Feldman. “When Andrew walked in, we all knew immediately that he was the one,” says Lawrence.

Writer-director Gene Stupnitsky was immediately impressed. “We saw Andrew on the second day, and right away, I thought, ‘He’s so good,’” says Stupnitsky. “He just nailed it. He nailed the comedy, he nailed the emotion. We went and saw a lot of other people – but I was relaxed, because I knew we had Andrew. It was clear, he was always the one.”

    DF 09389 cp r 2000x1333 thumbnail

Stupnitsky says that the chemistry between Lawrence and Feldman started strong and only got stronger through production – and that relationship, that feeling of trust and give-and-take in a fellow actor, encouraged bold, risky performances from both of them. “In his audition with Jennifer, they had amazing chemistry,” he says. “There’s something that was going on in their dynamic that I wasn’t even fully aware of. From day one, their connection was so strong – she could put herself out there, and that would force him to go out as well, to meet her. If she pushed him, he’d go there.”

“Jen is down for things that other people would not be, for sure,” says Feldman, “things that are intimidating for me to even think about. I couldn’t do so much of the stuff that she’s doing in this movie in a million years. Even when she has been afraid, she shows up, and she works really, really hard, and she does it.”

    NHF UK Premiere 09 P1 4476 OH0Pu81c

Watch Lawrence and Feldman’s amazing chemistry in No Hard Feelings, opening across Philippine cinemas June 21.

Jennifer Lawrence produces and stars in No Hard Feelings, a laugh-out-loud, edgy comedy from director Gene Stupnitsky (Good Boys) and the co-writer of Bad Teacher.

On the brink of losing her childhood home, Maddie (Lawrence) discovers an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to “date” their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, before he leaves for college. To her surprise, Maddie soon discovers the awkward Percy is no sure thing.

  • Patrick Wilson “furthers The Further” in his directorial debut for “Insidious: The Red Door”

In the film, the horror franchise’s original cast, including Wilson, Ty Simpkins and Rose Byrne, returns. To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before, facing their family’s dark past and a host of new and more horrifying terrors that lurk behind the red door.

“It’s exciting to play an ordinary character in an extraordinary situation,” says Wilson. “A very normal family – and all of a sudden, they have this crazy trauma! He travels into another dimension and has to fight a demon! It can go as crazy as you want it to, if you start from a place of real emotion. I like pushing myself, whether it’s physically, or emotionally, or creating tension, or finding humor in the dark moments, or darkness in the light moments.”

That idea – balancing light and dark – became the central theme of his directorial debut, according to Wilson. “Dealing with trauma, dealing with light and dark and the balance, and the art of the story – all of these seeds that were sown in the first film that now come to fruition,” he says. “Some blossom, some ripen, and some spoil.”

    Further 081322 NR 19421 r 2000x1333 thumbnail

Wilson knew that directing his first film would be a learning experience – as it should be. Referring to all the different directors he’s worked with he says, “They’re so different in the way they approach it, and there’s no one way. That’s what I love about this business, and what I love about directors. There are so many ways to get your film made. So my goal was to capitalize on my strengths, what excites me, what interests me, what I’m passionate about. I don’t quite know my style – I think I’m still finding my own style. I’m not so bold to think I’ve figured it out. I’m learning – I’m in a constant state of learning.”

“Patrick had a very strong vision for the film, and knew the direction of where he wanted to take this Lambert family saga,” says producer James Wan, who was also Wilson’s director in the first two Insidious films, as well as in Conjuring and Aquaman. “That made me really excited, since he’d be returning to play the character he played in the first two films. He’s building on the world we had created together whilst adding his own take to it. We talked and discussed about a wide range of things – story, characters, tone, scares, new villain, furthering the Further.”

  • Make Time To Be A Dad : On New Fatherhood From Luis Manzano

Fatherhood is one of life’s greatest blessings but comes with great responsibility.  It is a role which nobody can really prepare for 100%.

Let’s hear it from new daddy, actor, and host Luis Manzano as he shares his new journey of being a father to Peanut.

NEW LUIS CFRY HERO PR PHOTO

Luis candidly shared, “Being a Dad, it’s truly a surreal feeling.  I don’t think one can ever be prepared on being a parent.  It’s easy to say that you’re ready, you’re set, na lahat kayang-kaya, but once na andiyan na talaga, it’s something you work for each day.”

One major adjustment for Luis as a first-time father is having another top priority in life. Before, his wife Jessy and his work are his priorities, but now Luis makes sure to not simply have quality time with Peanut but also quantity of time even if it means he has to sacrifice some other things.  Luis’ Daddy duties are mangulit during playtime with Peanut, reading her books, and putting her to sleep sometimes.

When asked what his advice for other first-time Dads is, Luis shared, “There is no one formula on being a dad, each child is different so each one deserves their own brand of fatherhood. A realization for me from my Dad is that its not simply about quality of time.  Madami ang nagsasabi na its always about quality not quantity.  No, I think quantity is also as important as quality. And of course, be healthy.  We want to spend time with our children.  Specially, if nabigyan ka ng blessing na medyo may edad ka na.  There are so many things we want to do with them.  For that, you need to eat right and to get proper rest.”

Dad’s play an active role in caring for children and it’s essential to keep up their energy levels. That’s why protein is crucial to the diet. It boosts the immune system and helps the body function the way you need it to.

Struggling to prep protein meals due to time constraints? Check out Ajinomoto Crispy Fry® breading mix!  It’s so easy to use, just coat and fry, and in no time, you’ll have crispy delicious protein-packed fried chicken or even fried fish.

Being a new parent is truly a challenge, but raising a family is also one of the best jobs out there! Remember Luis’s advice and take the time to get to spend time with your child, play with them, prioritize them, and be there for them no matter what. Do that and you’ll do great.

Take care of yourself, eat well and live well with the people you love.

  • “Over-educated, under-utilized”: Empowering Pharmacists as the secret weapon of the healthcare system

After three years of dealing with COVID-19, the World Health Organization (WHO) finally declared the end of the pandemic, but the struggles of the healthcare system are far from over. In fact, the pandemic revealed the stresses and the gaps of the healthcare system, especially in developing countries like the Philippines.

According to the UP National Health Institute, six out 10 sick Filipinos die without seeing a doctor. The study emphasizes that Filipinos shoulder unforeseen health expenses out-of-pocket, driving many into poverty due to lack of resources and means to cover for costs. Just in 2021, the Philippine Statistics (PSA) reported that every Filipino spent nearly P10,000 a year for health-related goods and services.

While access to proper healthcare in the Philippines is a continuing struggle, Filipinos fail to realize that there is an untapped solution right under their noses – their friendly neighborhood pharmacists.

“For every Filipino that sees a doctor, 10 visit their local pharmacist, that is 10 times the opportunity for Filipinos to get access to healthcare and get educated about self-care, and yet they fail to maximize their pharmacists’ potential,” said Maria Valentina Sposito, Head of ASEA for Sanofi Consumer Healthcare.

    Over-educated and Under-utilized: Filipino Pharmacists

Despite the pharmacy practice requiring a four-year degree and license, it remains underrated in the Philippines. Their numbers are also limited with only approximately 30,000 in practice, spread thinly across communities, hospitals, and institutions.

“Most often, people would view pharmacists as just salespersons, but they don’t realize that we are healthcare professionals behind that counter,” said Ma. Gilda Saljay, the current president of the Philippine Pharmacists Association Inc. (PPHA), “Pharmacists are usually the first and often also the last line in healthcare you go to for health concerns. We see this an opportunity to give them the correct health information, medication counseling, and ways to address their health issues.”

Consequently, pharmacists though trained in their medical profession also need to continually train and be involved in capacity building and upskilling through Continuing Professional Development Programs especially when it comes to their soft skills and communication skills. This is to keep up with the increasing demand in counseling patients on primary care needs or addressing common but non-critical conditions like colds and cough.

“Filipino pharmacists are trained to counsel patients, but there is also a need to empower them to gain the confidence to approach patients and address concerns in their respective pharmacies,” Saljay remarked, “This is the biggest challenge for all Filipino pharmacists, one we’re working towards improving. We want to empower and educate pharmacists with the right skills to help unburden the country’s healthcare system.”

“Globally, pharmacists are seen as experts in optimal outcomes for prescribed medicines and the cornerstone for the effective provision of the universal healthcare. In the Philippines, people are still stuck on the idea that pharmacists are transactional instead of actual healthcare professionals,” Dr. Thorsten Berg, Scientific Affairs Head of Sanofi Consumer Healthcare AMEA (Asia/Middle East/Africa) added, “We want to shift the perception people have of Philippine pharmacists because we see their potential to be a vital access point for healthcare advice in the community thus relieving the burden on other channels of the healthcare system.”

    PharmAcademy: Empowering the secret weapon

In the interest of empowering and upskilling Filipino pharmacists to become indispensable and trusted healthcare providers, Sanofi Consumer Healthcare partnered with SwipeRx, a learning platform dedicated for pharmacists, and PPHA, the official organization representing Philippine pharmacists, to launch PharmAcademy, a learning tool for pharmacists.

PharmAcademy is a platform that provides learning modules for pharmacists to enhance their knowledge through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Digital Learning Campaigns and their soft skills and business acumen skills at zero cost and taken at their own pace. While already available to a limited number in the Philippines in the last three years, the launch of PharmAcademy on SwipeRX makes the learning tool available to all pharmacists and SwipeRX users across the country.

“We make sure that pharmacists can have the access to training materials to help them to step up and be what they are: healthcare providers,” Dr. Berg noted. “The PharmAcademy courses are also useful to their profession, so if they get on the platform and train, they get credit points to renew their licenses and continue their practice.”

Through PharmAcademy, Sanofi Consumer Healthcare along with partners PPHA and SwipeRx hope to not only boost the credibility and recognition of the pharmacy profession in the country, but also empower Filipino pharmacists to embody their crucial role in the healthcare system.

“We want pharmacists to use PharmAcademy for their own development, so they’ll have better understanding of not only how to take care the people who go see a pharmacist, but also be able to relay that message of practicing proper self-care,” Sposito said.

“I believe that pharmacists in the Philippines have the expertise, accountability, and training to truly step up and be the first line of aid for the community. We believe they have the potential to become world class healthcare professionals and hold the key to relieving the nation’s overburdened healthcare system, and we are hopeful that PharmAcademy will assist them in realizing this potential,” Dr. Berg concluded.
