Will Smith and Martin Lawrence hosted the “On The Run Cadet Academy” at the Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles on May 17, in anticipation of the upcoming release of Bad Boys: Ride or Die in June.

Jim Davis Talks About Chris Pratt Voicing Garfield in “The Garfield Movie,” Opens May 29

Garfield creator Jim Davis admits he was bowled over by Chris Pratt as the voice behind the beloved Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat in The Garfield Movie.

“Chris has great attitude in his voice and incredible timing,” says Davis. “I rate him a ten for funny. And one of the things he does is really bring the Garfield edge and attitude to the character, and so he really understood the character and absolutely nailed him. He’s great to listen to. You can sit back immediately and go, ‘Yeah, that’s Garfield.’”

In The Garfield Movie, the world-famous Garfield is about to have a wild outdoor adventure! After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father (Samuel L. Jackson) – scruffy street cat Vic – Garfield and his canine friend Odie (Harvey Guillén) are forced from their perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a hilarious, high-stakes heist.

After nearly 50 years of comic strip stardom and hilarious TV specials, The Garfield Movie brings together everything that audiences love about Garfield – plus a few things they never knew. For his part, Davis, who is one of the film’s executive producers, says he was thrilled to see an animated film break Garfield out of his three-panel confines. “It goes without saying that Garfield gets out and around more in animation. Otherwise, why animate him?” says the character’s creator. “Garfield has the same personality in both mediums. However, since animation is more than three frames, Garfield must get involved with a plot demanding that he leave his bed… In animation, you have the luxury of time to tell the story, plus you get to use music, sound effects, and audible dialog to execute the gags and drive the story.”

Davis says that he created the character to stand in contrast with the many dogs that were ruling the comics page at the time. “I saw a lot of dogs doing very well – Snoopy, Marmaduke, Fred Basset, you name it,” he says. “But there were no cats at the time. And I grew up on a farm with about 25 cats on average, and so I knew and loved cats. I thought, ‘Well, if dogs are doing that well, maybe I could use a cat.’ Cats are kind of standoffish – you know where your dog stands, but cats are aloof.”

Because of that, he says, “it’s natural to attribute human thoughts and feelings to cats. Garfield is a human being in a cat suit.” Indeed, Davis says that Garfield’s staying power comes in the fact that his millions of fans recognize themselves in his foibles. Cats – they’re just like us! “I hold a mirror to the reader and show them back with a humorous twist,” says Davis. “We’re made to feel guilty for overeating, not exercising, and oversleeping. Garfield relieves our guilt by enjoying all of those things.”

“Garfield’s frustrations are universal,” agrees director Mark Dindal, who helms our lazy and sarcastic hero’s first fully animated big-screen adventure. “He reminds people of their childhoods. The visual humor will always play. You can find Garfield comics from 15, 20, 30 years ago, and they don’t feel dated because they’re never really rooted in something specific to that time period.”

Says producer John Cohen, “It’s such an honor that Jim Davis entrusted us to be custodians of his creation – there’s nothing that has made me happier than to hear his joy and enthusiastic reactions to the film over the course of production.”

Experience the magic of BTS up close through Araneta City’s B★VERSE exhibition!

An exclusive media and celebrity launch was held on May 14, Tuesday, at Level 4 of the New Gateway Mall 2, giving an assortment of BTS fanclubs, influencer ARMYs like Lola ARMY, Mommy Etang, and Arshie Larga, and even P-POP groups like KAIA, 1st.One, Yes My Love, BILIB, Dione, and AJAA a sneak peek into everything the exhibit has to offer. MYX Global VJ, digital creator and ARMY Samm Alvero hosted the night’s program.

A purple ribbon cutting ceremony was also officiated prior to the preview. Present at the ceremony were B★VERSE Manila’s brand partners Raymund Nobleza, Head of Pizza Hut Marketing, PPI Holdings, Inc.; Bernadeth Nacino, Country Head of Panasonic; Uniprom Inc.’s Executive Director Veana Fores and Chief Operations Officer Irene Jose; and Joe Yi, CEO of YIZ Entertainment.

SM City Caloocan is Ready to Welcome All, Including Persons with Disabilities

On May 14, SM City Caloocan and SM Cares held a sensitivity training for employees at SM Supermalls’ newest mall, focusing on assisting persons with disabilities (PWDs). This initiative is part of SM’s commitment to creating inclusive and welcoming environments in all its malls.

The training included front liners, security guards, and other personnel, educating them on how to better serve PWD customers.

Engr. Bien Mateo, Director of SM Cares’ Program on PWDs, stressed the importance of such training. “It’s vital that our staff are equipped to make our malls safe and inclusive for everyone,” he said.

This training is one of many initiatives by SM Cares, which also includes annual events like the Angels Walk for Autism and the Happy Walk for Down Syndrome, as well as emergency preparedness forums for PWDs and seniors.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” Honors Workers, Offers Free Rides on Labor Day, and Pays Tribute to an Iconic Filipino Symbol

Filipinos were in for a wild ride as Warner Bros. Pictures, in anticipation of the opening of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” unveiled the Furiosa jeepney, which offered free rides to commuters on Labor Day, May 1, as a celebration of all workers who use the essential vehicle in their daily commute to work. The one-of-a-kind ride is a concept that explores both the post-apocalyptic look of the Mad Max vehicles and the ingenuity of the Filipino design. The jeepney activation pays homage to the iconic Philippine mode of transport, and hopes to honor it by giving it a global spotlight.

The jeepney had pick-up and drop off points at the LRT Buendia station and SM Mall of Asia, from 8AM to 3PM. Riders who hopped on the jeep also received exclusive “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” freebies.

The Furiosa jeepney also traveled throughout Metro Manila during the weekend, with the help of partner exhibitors SM, Ayala, Megaworld, and Gateway. The jeepney made its final stop for the day in front of the SM Mall of Asia Globe, ending the first leg of the tour.

On May 5 the jeepney blazed through the rest of the region with stops at SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria, Eastwood, and SM North EDSA. The Furiosa jeepney tour ended at Gateway 2, with the jeepney being showcased along with the trailer for the highly anticipated new Mad Max film playing across the Quantum Skyview.

Robinsons Naga’s iconic Tree of Life reopens to the public

Robinsons Naga’s Tree of Life is back and it’s brighter than ever.

The world-class installation was first unveiled in 2018, making history as the first digital installation by Jefre in the country, and the first permanent installation featuring 3D projection mapping in any mall.

The Filipino-American artist, whose real name is Jefre Figueras Manuel, designed the 15-meter fiberglass sculpture. Known for larger-than-life works of art, Jefre is also the artist behind The Victor, the Philippines’ tallest multimedia sculpture, which can be found at Robinsons Land’s Bridgetowne.

In creating Tree of Life, Jefre was inspired by Bicol’s beloved gabi (taro) leaf, which is used in everyday cooking in the region. “I was looking at the landscape in Naga and I saw that the taro leaf was a staple to the community,” he said.

Tree of Life reopened to the public on May 6, 2024. It now shines brighter at 26,000 lumens. The two-story sculpture wows viewers as it transforms with the use of projections. Shoppers can immerse themselves in a diverse array of visual spectacles, from spinning planets and galaxies to enchanting fairytale landscapes, promising to ignite the imagination. 3D Mapping shows happen daily from 6pm to 9pm.

“It’s almost like a symbol of what the city of Naga is all about in terms of the morals and values,” Jefre said. “The central story is really about this idea of the root that we plant in the community.”

The sculpture is now a source of pride in the Bicol region, a landmark for locals and a tourist attraction for those just visiting.

The Central Garden, with the Tree of Life as the focal point, is a great place for bonding with friends and family. “The idea that public art is more than an object but a place and creates meaning in people’s lives is what makes this a very successful project,” Jefre said.

Tree of Life is just one of a number of public art installations people have enjoyed at Robinsons Malls. Mallgoers have previously seen Jefre’s “Heaven’s Gate” at Robinsons Galleria South in Laguna and Erwin Wurm’s “Austrian Mountain Cap” at Robinsons Galleria Ortigas.
