Critics Are Raving: “Sinners” with Michael B. Jordan Opens April 19, Scores 99% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes

Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed director of Creed and Black Panther, returns to cinemas with his most soul-stirring project yet — Sinners. Opening exclusively in Philippine theaters this Saturday, April 19, the genre-defying film stars Michael B. Jordan in a mesmerizing dual role that’s already capturing critics and audiences alike.

And with a 99% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that Sinners is striking a chord.

A Story That Haunts and Holds You

At the core of Sinners lies a chilling narrative: twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, return to their hometown in search of redemption after a life of chaos. But what greets them isn’t peace — it’s an ancient, malevolent force that knows exactly how to lure them back in.

“This movie is so many things,” shares Jordan, reflecting on his fifth collaboration with Coogler. “It has so many layers to it. I want people to take away everything that we intended to shoot and make and create. It’s a fun experience.”

“I want them to have fun, but I also want them to think as well. On the ride home, or in the shower, or at home with their family, I want them to still be thinking about the movie and the characters, and spark conversations. That’s what I love about movies – they just make people think differently and get to know things, spaces and places that they might not have been in contact with before. But also, to have fun being a little scared. I really want them to enjoy the music… I want people to feel the musical element in their bones.”

    Watch the trailer here:

The Power of Shared Fear and Cinematic Joy

For Coogler, Sinners is more than a film — it’s a full-body, communal experience.

“while sitting in a darkened room, full of strangers, and being absolutely terrified by something that was happening on the screen,” shares the critically acclaimed writer-director of films including “Creed” and “Black Panther.” “That feeling of being with others, the unison, the horror and delight made me feel like home. That’s where it began for me…”

In the spirit of that shared experience, the film boasts a soundscape and score that practically pulses through your chest. “The music is a character in this movie,” Jordan adds. “You feel it. It gets under your skin.”

Critics Are Calling It a Masterpiece

From terrifying to transcendent, Sinners has critics raving:

    • The Hollywood Reporter: “Sinners” is “smart horror, even poetic at times, with much to say about race and spiritual freedom… It’s also an exactingly crafted movie that demands to be seen on the biggest possible screen, with the loudest sound system.”
    • IndieWire: “Ryan Coogler’s best movie so far is a bloody, bluesy, and throbbingly fun vampire saga,”
    • Deadline Hollywood: “‘Sinners’ marks another strong reason why Coogler is at the top of his generation of filmmakers, and Jordan continues to show why he is a real-deal movie star.”

See It Big. See It Loud.

“‘Sinners’ is my love letter to all of the things that I love about going to the movies, as a cinephile, especially watching films with an audience,” says Coogler. “It’s the communal experience –  and this movie was made to be seen with a crowd of people you don’t know.”

Don’t miss Sinners when it opens only in cinemas this Saturday, April 19. Bring your friends, grab your seat, and prepare for a ride you’ll be thinking about long after the credits roll.

Caught in a Real-Life Horror Loop: “Until Dawn” Cast Pranked at WonderCon 2025

From Silver Screen Screams to Convention Pranks

What started as a routine press tour turned into a twisted timeloop of terrors for the cast of Until Dawn. During their visit to WonderCon 2025, the stars thought they were in for a day of fan meet-and-greets and media interviews. What they didn’t expect? A relentless barrage of jumpscares designed to test their scream stamina—live and unscripted.

    Meet the Haunted, Hilarious Cast

Stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, and Belmont Cameli, alongside producer-director David F. Sandberg, producer-writer Gary Dauberman, and producer Carter Swan, were the unsuspecting victims of these eerie antics. Their shocked faces? Absolutely priceless.

Watch the full scare-prank video here:

    On-Screen Horror Meets Real Emotion

Despite the gags and giggles, Until Dawn is a gripping tale of survival. Ella Rubin, who plays Clover, describes her experience as exhilarating:

“Until Dawn gave me the opportunity to keep pushing, rather than pulling back. That was exciting and kind of delicious. There’s no way to rein it in when your character is constantly in a life and death situation, and you’re literally being chased by a monster with an axe!”

Michael Cimino, portraying Clover’s ex, Max, adds a layer of depth to the horror:

“I love that every character, after each night, is changing a bit and revealing more of themselves. Every character is on an admittedly scary path of self-discovery,”

    UDMichaelCimino EllaRubin 1

Ji-young Yoo, as Megan, offers a spiritual slant:

“Megan is a strong believer in the supernatural. She thinks that the trip is going to help them all lock into some kind of energy from the missing Melanie. That will help them all close out this chapter in their lives.”

And Belmont Cameli? He’s more the outsider in the group, playing the snarky but observant Abe:

“Abe is definitely on the group’s periphery,” says Cameli, who takes on the role. “He’s also a bit of a know-it-all and smartass. I also enjoyed that Abe is on the outside of this inner circle of friends and playing that dynamic with the rest of the cast.”

At the Heart of It All: Friendship and Fear

At the center of this nightmarish narrative is Clover. Writer Gary Dauberman shares,

“Clover is the anchor of the movie. She’s the reason the friends come together and undertake this journey. They rally around Clover and want to give her closure to the disappearance of her sister, in the hopes of finding their friend, again,”

  • How Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” Continues to Inspire the Faithful, 21 Years Later

How Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” Continues to Inspire the Faithful, 21 Years Later

A Sacred Tradition Meets a Timeless Film

Holy Week in the Philippines is a solemn and deeply reflective season—an annual pause where many Filipinos step back from their routines to reconnect with their faith. This sacred week, full of rituals and meditative moments, is more than tradition. It’s a personal journey through sacrifice, redemption, and the boundless power of faith.

    5 2

And as Filipinos seek meaning during this time, The Passion of the Christ continues to stand out as a striking companion to reflection.

The Enduring Power of a Cinematic Masterpiece

Released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson, is not just a film—it’s a visceral experience. Based on Anne Catherine Emmerich’s The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, it captures the final twelve hours of Jesus’ life—from Gethsemane’s solitude to the crucifixion’s haunting silence.

Twenty-one years on, its raw emotional intensity still grips audiences, offering a profound perspective on suffering, love, and divine sacrifice.

    Faith Born from Desperation

For Gibson, the inspiration behind the film came from a personal crisis. Struggling with what he described as “spiritual bankruptcy,” he turned to the Bible for solace. What he found was a renewed faith—and a calling to share it through film.

This narrative mirrors the experience of many Filipinos: a people resilient through trials, deeply rooted in their faith, and eager to find spiritual truth not just in doctrine, but in lived experience.

    4 3

Filipino Faith and the Film’s Relevance

Filipino culture is saturated with representations of Christ—from life-sized statues to passion plays. Yet, The Passion of the Christ brings these familiar images to life with unmatched emotional clarity. For viewers who’ve grown up with the story, the film adds layers of depth, pain, and truth that echo far beyond the screen.

From Caleb Deschanel’s somber, breathtaking cinematography to John Debney’s soul-stirring score, and Jim Caviezel’s unforgettable portrayal of Christ—every element is carefully crafted to evoke deep emotion.

    3 5

A Message That Still Speaks Loudly

Speaking to Sight Magazine, Gibson shared his hopes for the film’s impact:

“I hope it spurs them on to investigate the life of Christ for themselves. And I don’t think you can’t be impacted by it. Some of the images are really strong, and I’ve decided not to hold back. Jim Caviezel (the actor who plays Jesus) said it really well. He said there will be some people that it will freak out…(b)ut there will be other people who can’t stop watching it, and even though they are horrified and terrified by it they will sit through the whole thing…By speaking very loudly, image and sound wise, it’s going to make people think very deeply.”

    2 5

    What’s Next: The Resurrection

And he wasn’t wrong. Two decades later, the film continues to stir hearts, challenge perceptions, and renew faith across generations.

Exciting news for fans: Mel Gibson is already preparing a sequel titled Resurrection. The new project aims to explore what happened after Christ’s crucifixion—delving deeper into the foundation of Christian belief. Stay tuned!

    When and Where to Watch

Just in time for Holy Week, The Passion of the Christ will stream on Lionsgate Play PH via PLDT Home and Smart, starting Maundy Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Whether it’s your first time watching or a return visit, this film promises a powerful spiritual encounter.

“Until Dawn” Film Adaptation Brings Nightmarish Creativity to Life Through a Deadly Time Loop

    Fans of horror, brace yourselves!

From the twisted minds of David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) and Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle, The Nun) comes a terrifying new take on horror storytelling: Until Dawn. Based on the beloved PlayStation video game, this upcoming film takes a familiar yet fearsome concept—a group of teens trapped in a slasher scenario—and cranks it up to spine-chilling extremes through a deadly time loop.

    UDMichaelCimino EllaRubin
    Michael Cimino and Ella Rubin

    “Every Night, a New Nightmare”

As an ode to the original game and the horror genre as a whole, Sandberg and Dauberman embraced the movie’s looping narrative as a chance to flex their creative muscles.

“Every night, the story resets, taking us into a new horror genre,” Sandberg elaborates. “As a lifelong horror fan, it was a dream come true to work in all these subgenres. Every night the characters undergo what feels like a new chapter in a different story.”

The film stars Ella Rubin as Clover, who, along with her friends, returns to a remote mountain site in search of her missing sister Melanie, played by Maia Mitchell. Their search spirals into blood-curdling chaos as they’re murdered one by one inside an eerie, abandoned visitor center—only to wake up and do it all over again.

    “Let’s Just Kill Him.”

The freedom of the time loop gave the creators an opportunity to experiment. For Dauberman, the real thrill was in the chaos.

“Until Dawn let us have the fun of killing off our characters in wild, unpredictable ways,” he laughs. “It was both a challenge and tremendous fun because we had the freedom to say, ‘Yeah, f*** it, let’s just kill him.’”

That playful horror energy carries over into every frame, making each death unique—and each rebirth a countdown to terror.

    Familiar, Yet Totally Unpredictable

Genre fans and gamers alike will love the film’s love-letter approach. With easter eggs scattered throughout, there’s plenty for loyal Until Dawn players to spot, while new viewers will still be gripped by the suspense and action.

Asad Qizilbash, producer and Head of PlayStation Productions, couldn’t be happier.

“PlayStation Productions serves as a vessel for top creators to translate their passion for gaming into compelling narratives across various media. Being fans of the game themselves, David, Gary and their cast and crew have worked closely with our team at PlayStation Productions to make sure the film captured what fans love most about the Until Dawn world. And while you don’t need to have played the game to enjoy the movie’s twists and turns, there’s a good chance that fans will spot some cool references to the original story,” Qizibash says.

    The Ultimate Horror Mashup

Caught in an endless cycle of terror, the only way out is to survive until dawn. But with each reset, the killer changes—and the clock is ticking.

The cast includes rising stars Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli and legendary actor Peter Stormare, in a twisted tale where each death counts—literally.

Directed by Steven Boyle, a renowned special effects artist known for his work on The Matrix trilogy and The Hobbit, this marks his directorial debut—and what a monstrous debut it is. Originally premiering on Shudder, the cult-favorite streaming hub for horror and supernatural fans, this fear-inducing gem now comes alive on the big screen only at Ayala Malls Cinemas.

When Blood Ties Turn into Cursed Chains

At the heart of The Demon Disorder lies a twisted family reunion. Three estranged brothers are pulled back together when the youngest becomes possessed… by their own deceased father. But this isn’t your usual ghost story. The spirit is angry, relentless, and knows every fear, secret, and scar—because he helped create them.

The terrifying patriarch is brought to life by genre favorite John Noble—a face familiar to sci-fi fans from his iconic roles in Fringe and The Lord of the Rings. Alongside him, Charles Cottier, Dirk Hunter, and Christian Willis portray the embattled siblings, delivering powerful performances steeped in raw emotion and dread.

Gore Meets Gravitas: Critics Can’t Get Enough

Critics are buzzing—and shivering—over the film’s potent mix of visceral effects and psychological horror:

“The effects in the last act are gooey, slimy and quite impressive for a low-budget film,” writes review blog Voices From the Balcony. “Boyle knew what he wanted—from an eye growing in someone’s chest to the fully grown creature that emerges from another character.”

Writes Morbidly Beautiful, “‘The Demon Disorder’ is a grotesquely beautiful addition to the horror genre. Its potent blend of body horror and emotional depth will satisfy fans of practical effects-driven nightmares.”

And according to Fiction Machine, “‘The Demon Disorder’ is a rock-solid, hugely entertaining genre piece. It knows its audience, and while it does not provide anything specifically innovative or new it demonstrates a keen understanding of audience expectations and horror conventions. Put simply: if it sounds like something you would enjoy, it almost certainly is.”
