Soon to join Netflix’s Pinoy gems such as Through Night and Day and My Amanda is a new heartwarming film from director Marla Ancheta titled Doll House.
Starring Baron Geisler and the young Althea Ruedas, this new flick from the Finding Agnes director tells the story of a rock band singer Rustin, who has a troubled past. Due to drug addiction, Rustin abandoned his wife Sheena, and their baby Yumi. Years later in the Netherlands, Rustin finds the opportunity to become Yumi’s babysitter without her knowing about their blood ties, and tries to rekindle their long-lost relationship.
In a recent roundtable interview with the press, director Marla Ancheta, Baron Geisler, and Althea Ruedas talked about how the film took shape.
When the trailer dropped, viewers quickly saw Baron Geisler as fit for his role in the film, having been cast as an antagonist in many shows and films, but it was the hint of a dramatic redemption that really pumped the viewers. According to director Ancheta, the film’s producer suggested that Baron play Rustin, and she was on board with the idea immediately.
“I really want to touch the story of a family, relationship, and of course, since we have these good actors, kailangan maging believable ito na mag-ama kayo… Basically, dun ako mas naka-focus. It’s really more of how to deliver the characters at the same time, nasusundan mo kung paano nagde-develop yung relationship nilang mag-ama,” explained the director.
Geisler also talked about accepting the role: “What’s not to say ‘yes’ to? It’s a big project with Netflix, it’s a worldwide movie, it’s a big-budget film, and it’s a good role,” said Baron. “Now I’m on my knees, praying that I get to sustain this and get more substantial roles like this.”

Furthermore, Baron Geisler also shared how the role came at the right time, just a few months after he promised his wife that he’d be in his own Netflix film.
“One time, me and my wife were watching Netflix, A Faraway Land,” says Baron. “I’m a good friend, best friend ko si Paolo Contis. Nagustuhan namin yung pelikula, and then my wife, nakita kong na-sad siya, na parang she wanted something like that for me. And then I said, you know what, one day I’m gonna have a film like that.
“And then I called up Paolo, I said ‘Pao, angganda ng pelikula mo pang-Hollywood! I love you! Congratulations! Walang jealousy to, punong-puno ng gratitude. Then simula nun, dun ako nagkaroon ng revelation na if you have this authentic appreciation for another actor, another film, and I want the same na mangyari sa akin, then God will give it to me, and wala pa yatang dalawang buwan biglang tinawagan akofor this film,” the actor added.

As for Baron’s young co-star Althea, she shares that the atmosphere on set was fun, but at first, she also got nervous when she got the role. “Super nervous and excited po ako nung nalaman ko po na nakuha ko po yung role. Nervous because they’re all big stars na po, mga kasama ko po, pero excited po kasi it’s my first movie in Netflix po kaya thankful po ako kay Papa Jesus na binigay Nya po sakin ‘to,”
Asked about their favorite parts on the film and during the shoot, Althea tells the press: “Ang favorite scenes ko po talaga, yung mga bonding time po nila Yumi and Rusty, kasi talagang hindi po kami nag-aacting nun. Talagang nag-eenjoy lang po kami.”
Baron adds, “One of the best things that really got to me was the father-daughter love story. Me reconnecting with my daughter and the realization that I have a lot of unfinished business in life. And also, masasabi ko na heart and soul din ng movie na ‘to, malaking part si Direk Marla, because she has guided Althea and I all through out.”

The film also stars Mary Joy Apostol, Phi Palmos, Katreena Beron, Izah Hankammer, Alwyn Uytingo, and Ricardo Cepeda. Doll House is now streaming on Netflix.

A few months ahead of its much-awaited sequel, James Cameron’s Avatar, also known as the highest-grossing movie of all time, is heading back to cinemas this September, now in its remastered version!
A film meant to be seen on the big screen, Avatar‘s re-release will give new viewers the opportunity to experience the epic sci-fi adventure, and for existing fans to revisit the breathtaking world of Pandora! This comes just in time for the release of Avatar: The Way of Water in December, the first of four sequels spawned by Cameron’s film.
Before its global re-release, we got to join the virtual press conference for the film, where director James Cameron and actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, and Stephen Lang answered some questions from the press, regarding the movie that made cinema history.
Below are the highlights of the press conference:
Director James Cameron, why did you want to bring Avatar back to the big screen, and how will audiences be able to experience it now?
It’s been 12 years since the release, and so basically if you’re kind of under 22 or 23 years of age, it’s very, very unlikely that you’ve seen the film in a movie theater. Which in a way kinda means you haven’t seen the film. I mean, we authored the film for the big screen, for the giant screen, in 3D. And now we’ve remastered it in 4K, in high dynamic range and some 48-frame-per-second sections in the film.
It’s looking better than it ever looked, even back in its initial release. And there are so many people out there, a whole new kinda generation of film fans coming up. Even if they like the movie on streaming or, you know, Blu-ray or however they saw it, they still haven’t really seen the movie the way we intended it to be seen. And we just watched the film recently when we finished the whole remastering process, and it kinda blew us away.
And you know, that’s hard to say with any degree of humility, but I mean, we were really impressed with how the movie looked. Just the physical experience of the film. And we’re just really excited to share that with people that have never seen it in a movie theater.
Why do you think the film was so incredibly popular with audiences back when it was released, and why do you think those same things will resonate today for an audience?
Well, I think any film is only as good as the people in it, and you see in front of you five individuals who brought their heart and souls to that film.
Sometimes in very different ways. I mean, Zoe’s challenges were different from Michelle’s challenges, and [Lang’s] challenges, and so on. But I think people respond to people. But in this particular case with Avatar, they’re responding to people sometimes that are 10 feet tall, like Sam’s characters, Zoe’s characters. Technically Zoe, I think you’re nine foot two as Neytiri.
You’re also in a world, and you’re these otherworldly characters. Some of you played these otherworldly characters with, you know, big eyes and cattails and all that sort of thing. So I think it took us out of our day-to-day problems. It took us out of our day-to-day political discourse and the chaos and disorderliness of real life. And it took us to a place where, yes, there’s conflict. There are all sorts of important things going on. But it’s all through a lens of fantasy or science fiction.
And so, from whatever culture you’re in, whether you’re in China or Japan, Europe, North America, it didn’t matter. People saw some universality of their lives in these characters through this lens of science fiction. And then I think it was the physical execution, the finish of the film that I think in the first few minutes, people just gave up trying to figure out how it was done because we mixed so many techniques it took us years to develop.
And so they just kinda surrendered to a sense of immersion in a world and in a fantasy, and you’re willing to go on a fantasy if you can relate to the main characters. And I think, you know, Sam’s character took us on that journey. That’s Sam taking us on that journey. And Sigourney’s character kinda set the frame for it, made it all seem somehow rational. And Lang’s character made it all seem rational in a very different way from a very different perspective. I think people found universals of human experience that they could relate to.
Sigourney Weaver, on that first day, how thoroughly did you know what your character was gonna look like, and how did that impact how you played the character?
I think it was the early days when I shot Grace’s first avatar. So I hadn’t quite drilled in her, in fact, her earthly being yet. And so a lot of it is just, you know, with Jim, you step off the cliff, you know that the best people in the world are in charge of every department, and you can trust that the process will never let you down. So that, even though I didn’t have the answers to everything, my challenge that day, on that first day, was to invent my avatar self who is so much taller, freer. Not a smoker. You know, a person in touch with the natural world in a way that Dr. Grace Augustine could never be because she’s a human.
She’s an earthling. This is not her planet. So, I mean, there’s just no end to the fun you have in terms of challenges that keep coming at you in a Cameron film. You never go, “My job is done.” That never happens. You just go, “Oh my God, that wave is over.” Now I understand this wave is coming at me. All this new stuff to think about.
Michelle Rodriguez, what is the one scene that is your favorite to watch and that you’re excited to see remastered because you know it will look amazing?
I would have to say the tribal ceremony at the Tree of Life, when they’re trying to bring back Sigourney’s character to life. There’s something really powerful about that moment, and it resonates with me in such a deep way. Because it seems so beautiful, natural, ancient, and spiritual, you know? I felt like I was on Earth looking at the ceremony while on some sort of hallucinogenic [Laughs]. But yeah. That’s my favorite scene.
Zoe Saldaña, in what ways did the movie and its experience change you as an actor?
I mean, we can see all the opportunities that being a part of Avatar gave me. And I was able to sort of build a career and a lifestyle and still support my family, which for artists, it’s a very important thing. I think that as an artist that loves, in a very unconditional way, storytelling. It really instilled in me that discipline to dig deeper to create a backstory for a character. Because the character, in order for you to understand where your character is, you need to know where your characters come from. And that is something that I practice that I don’t have, you know, a training in acting. But I do feel that being a part of Avatar was my Juilliard. It was my NYU course where I really got to play with people that were genuinely wishing me to succeed. And it was an environment that was very playground-like. And therefore, I was very free.
And I got to try so many things. And I remember Jim saying so many times, like, “There’s no such thing as a mistake. You try it, and if we don’t like it, at least we tried it.” And I also would hear him say to other people. “If I’m coming at you because of something snit working, and you come at me with some bullsh*t story, you better just tell me, ‘I don’t know what happened, Sir.” [Laughs] And I remember that. I remember going, “Don’t ever have everything to say. When you don’t know, you just don’t know, and let’s keep finding it.”
So that’s definitely something that I’m practicing in my career. And now as a mother, I get to pass some of those teachings to my kids. I don’t know if they’re assimilating it, but I’m gonna keep trying. [Laughs].
Stephen Lang, movie fans have really embraced your character, Quaritch, since the movie came out. Did that surprise you?
I think to an extent it has surprised me. But when I think about it, think of the reasons behind it, maybe it becomes somewhat less surprising. I think that in playing Quaritch, we know his function in the script. We know he’s the bad guy, and I think as an actor, that’s not particularly helpful for you. What really is helpful for me is to find the qualities that have brought him to this position of leadership that he is at when we meet him, which is to say he is a very capable commander.
And he inspires loyalty. He leads by example. I think that his courage is probably unquestioned. And so what I’m saying is that there’s a lot of positive qualities to the man. He happens to have a little problem, you know [laughs] fitting in with this planet, maybe. But also, we, as a people, and I’m talking about Americans right now specifically, we’re a very aggressive and mission-oriented people.
You know, a number of times, I’ve had people come up to me kind of in a sotto voce way say, “You know, I really am behind Quaritch. I’m on his team.” And I always feel like, “Really? I don’t want to know you.” [Laughs] So, anyway, I think it’s the positive qualities –and there are many– that people respond to leaders, no matter what their moral stance may be. I think that we see a lot of evidence of that in our recent political climate in the United States.
Sam, why do you think that audiences are still so emotionally attached to Avatar?
Look, I think this was a story about a young guy that went to another planet and he was looking for something. Looking to belong. And he found it in another culture that he didn’t really know anything about.
And I think, personally, I think that sense of belonging permeates with all of us. We’re all kind of looking for our own little clan, our own clique, our own group of people that can comfort us and give us confidence, and that we can learn from. And, you know, I think that there’s something in that that’s very interesting. And I don’t think that was a theme that was, say, hammered out. I just think that that was a subconscious feeling that maybe we all received globally when we watched the movie, this sense of wanting to belong.
For James Cameron, what makes you proud to have been part of this film?
Looking back with the perspective of now 12 years later, I guess I’m proudest in a general sense of the team. And I want to break that down. There’s the beauty that was created by the artists, the designers, the set builders. The people that sort of built out that world in all its detail and all the creatures in it, and every blade of grass, and the beauty that they were able to create, even when that beauty was scary.
Like the Viperwolves and the Thanator, I still think of them as beautiful and part of the majesty of nature. But there’s also the human beauty, so that was created by this cast that’s sitting here right now. Just this amazing ability to play, to create, to become people, and to do it in different forms…
I just look back on everybody’s work and just so grateful to have had an opportunity to work with these amazing people. And I think that’s why I promptly went out and wrote another and another and another Avatar [Laughs]. I just wanted to continue with this family which is such a great, great experience.

Jo Koy has made his name in stand-up comedy for his hilarious routines rooted in his Filipino-American heritage and experiences growing up. But beyond his relatable jokes about Vicks VapoRub, lost lunchboxes, and munggo, Jo Koy is now making Hollywood history with his film Easter Sunday.
Now showing in Philippine cinemas nationwide, Easter Sunday is the first film with an all-Filipino lead cast to be produced by a major Hollywood studio. And it was Amblin’s Steven Spielberg himself, who wanted to put Jo Koy and his movie pitch on the big screen after seeing his Netflix special Comin’ In Hot.
The film follows the struggling comedian Joe Valencia who joins his Filipino family for Easter Sunday, but with his quarreling mother and tita, a TV show opportunity at bay, a son he can’t seem to make time for, and a cousin caught up with dangerous gangsters, Joe is up for a chaotic holiday.
Last Tuesday, August 30, Jo Koy joined the Philippine media at the press conference for Easter Sunday. Here, Jo Koy talked about his journey as a stand-up comedian, from getting into Netflix to turning his dream film into a reality in Hollywood which has long snubbed specificity in Asian characters. Here are some highlights of the press conference.
A rough road of rejections
Jo Koy may all be smiles and funny faces whenever we see him on stage, but the comedian’s rise to fame wasn’t an easy one, as he revealed during the press conference. The Comedy Central channel really kicked off his career as a comedian on TV, but Jo Koy also shared one of his most discouraging moments when he performed for the network.
“[It was like 2009], it was a long time ago, and I thought personally it was an incredible routine and I was hurt because they didn’t even air it,” shared Jo Koy. “And I was just like, ‘Hey, what’s going on right now?’ Like, they shot all of these specials and for some reason, mine just got buried. I was like, ‘Why is it not being played?’ There were times when I just wanted to quit, like ‘Why am I even doing this?’”
But the comedian kept going, citing his love for the art form of stand-up comedy. “I just love what it takes to get in front of people and make them laugh and tell a story,” he said. Of course, all of this paid off.
Jo Koy gained even more popularity when his comedy specials dropped on streaming platforms, most especially on Netflix. But getting that Netflix fame wasn’t easy either, because he was faced with multiple rejections before he finally got that spot on the streaming platform.
“My first special, Live From Seattle, they turned that down like eight times. They kept saying no to me, to the point where I was like, ‘Okay I’ll fund it myself and I’ll shoot it myself’ and I paid for that special and I sold it to Netflix,” explained the comedian. “If that didn’t happen, then Steven Spielberg would have never seen the second one, and that’s the one that Steven brought me in and asked me if I had a movie idea. You know what I mean? I was gonna do it no matter what.”
The comedian further shared that he also had to pull money from his own pockets for his second and third specials, just so he could produce them at the venues that he wanted but Netflix wouldn’t approve of. Jo Koy persisted and we got Comin’ In Hot which was shot in Hawaii and In His Elements shot right here in the Philippines.
“I wanted to showcase Filipinos. I wanted to show what the islands look like. I wanted to show what our people look like. I wanted to show how talented we are. I wanted to show Filipinos that are in the Philippines and give them a chance to shine on a platform like Netflix, and then have Filipinos from America and bring them to the Motherland and let them perform in front of Filipinos,” shared Jo Koy about making In His Elements.
Darren Espanto and more Filipino talents were showcased at the Philippine red carpet premiere of ‘Easter Sunday’.
But Jo Koy also noted that he now has a beautiful relationship with Netflix and the new people from the platform who he gets to make deals with. He even announced his fourth Netflix special shot at the Great Western Forum, which will be released this September 13.
An opportunity from Amblin
While it was a rough road getting his routines into Netflix, it seemed like Jo Koy finally caught a break when he was called in to pitch a film to Amblin. As it would appear, he just charmed the Steven Spielberg with his humor. According to Jo Koy, he thought it would just be another opportunity where he would give a pitch and nothing happens, because “that’s what happens in Hollywood,” but nope– Spielberg was intent on getting Jo Koy’s idea out there.

“What happened was I walked into Amblin and everybody’s like ‘Oh Steven loves you, Steven thinks you’re very funny, Steven this, Steven that,’ and you hear that and you’re like ‘Are you talking about Steven from accounting? [laughs] Like this can’t be Steven Spielberg, there’s just no way!”
But it was indeed Spielberg, and they agreed on producing a film that will have a global theatrical release. The comedian also noted that the renowned filmmaker only made two movies from that meeting, Easter Sunday and Jurassic World.
Filling in the Filipino representation in Hollywood
Easter Sunday isn’t just borne out of Jo Koy’s struggles, he makes this clear. The long journey to have Filipinos really represented on the big screen was also the struggle of many Hollywood actors and artists from the Motherland. This is why Jo Koy was certain that he wanted the veteran Hollywood actors Lou Diamond Phillips and Tia Carrere to be part of Easter Sunday.
“Back in the day, if you’re Filipino– it doesn’t even matter if you’re Filipino– if you’re just Asian, they’ll [round] you up in a group. That’s how racist Hollywood was,” said Jo Koy. “One thing [Tia Carrere] said to me, she said ‘You know I used to go out for roles? And the description would be Asian with a thick accent…’ That’s the kind of characters that she has to go in for, and [Easter Sunday] was the first movie where she got to play a Filipino, in her 42 years in Hollywood.”
It was these actors that had to go “to the trenches” so that a film like Easter Sunday would become a reality today. “They were there before anybody, they had to go through the hard Hollywood,” said Jo Koy.

Jo Koy on future film prospects
Easter Sunday gives Filipinos a first in Hollywood history, and we can’t help but wonder, what’s next? For Jo Koy, he wants to make more opportunities for everyone in terms of representation in Hollywood, not just as an actor but also from behind the scenes.
“Most importantly, for me, I want to also have my hand not only in front of the camera but behind the camera. I also want to open doors, to not just specific roles,” explained Jo Koy, also citing how the Filipino stereotypes he would often joke about remain prominent in Hollywood. “‘Oh, that’s a nurse, that has to be a Filipino,’ I don’t want that anymore. I want it to be anybody, a CEO of a business– Filipino; a cop, a singer, I don’t care. Let’s just have these roles for everybody, and I just don’t want to open doors for Filipinos, I want to open doors for everybody. So yes, I want to create more, I want to produce more.”

So besides his comedy specials, Filipinos can also expect Jo Koy’s further foray into the film industry. As Jo Koy’s journey had proven, getting there was no joke, but we can expect that the comedian will continue to persevere.
“Don’t close the door on anybody, if you have the light, share it. If you have the stage, open it up and let other people on it. There’s enough light for everybody, just remember that,” Jo Koy tells everyone in the room as the program ended.
Easter Sundayis directed by Jay Chandrasekhar. Also part of the cast are Lydia Gaston, Brandon Wardell, Eva Noblezada, Elena Juatco, Rodney To, Eugene Cordero, Melody Butui, Joey Guila, Tiffany Hadish, and Jimmy O. Yang. The film is now showing in cinemas nationwide, buy your tickets here.
